Electron beam surface remelting enhanced corrosion resistance of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V as a potential in-situ re-finishing technique

This study explores the effect of surface re-finishing on the corrosion behavior of electron beam manufactured (EBM) Ti-G5 (Ti-6Al-4V), including the novel application of an electron beam surface remelting (EBSR) technique. Specifically, the relationship between material surface roughness and corrosion resistance was examined. Surface roughness was tested in the as-printed (AP), mechanically polished (MP), and EBSR states and compared to wrought (WR) counterparts. Electrochemical measurements were performed in chloride-containing media. It was observed that surface roughness, rather than differences in the underlying microstructure, played a more significant role in the general corrosion resistance in the environment explored here. While both MP and EBSR methods reduced surface roughness and enhanced corrosion resistance, mechanical polishing has many known limitations. The EBSR process explored herein demonstrated positive preliminary results. The surface roughness (R a ) of the EBM-AP material was considerably reduced by 82%. Additionally, the measured corrosion current density in 0.6 M NaCl for the EBSR sample is 0.05 µA cm –2 , five times less than the value obtained for the EBM-AP specimen (0.26 µA cm –2 ).

Negative thermal expansion and the role of hybridization in perovskite-type PbTiO 3 -Bi(Cu 0.5 Ti 0.5) O 3

PbTiO 3 -BiMeO 3 ferroelectrics have attracted much attention due to not only their extremely large polarization and piezoelectricity but also their controllable thermal expansion. In this study, we present a new binary system of (1 - x)PbTiO 3 -xBi(Cu 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 possessing large tetragonality and enhanced spontaneous polarization. Interestingly, a combination of near zero thermal expansion and negative thermal expansion over a temperature range of RT to T C (~550 °C) has been observed in tetragonal 0.85PbTiO 3 -0.15Bi(Cu 0.5 Ti 0.5 )O 3 . The comprehensive structure analysis addressed that the abnormal thermal expansion is coupled to the spontaneous volume ferroelectrostriction. Moreover, the chemical bonding investigation by a maximum entropy method further attests that the covalent hybridization of Pb/Bi–O bonds plays a vital role in the improved ferroelectricity and interacts with thermal vibration to dominate the crossover from positive to negative thermal expansion. fINALLY, The present studies would give direct evidence to verify the theoretical calculations and could be extended to reveal the nature of thermal expansion in ferroelectrics.

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction on earth abundant 2D Mo 2 C and Ti 3 C 2 MXenes

Mo 2 C and Ti 3 C 2 MXenes were investigated as earth-abundant electrocatalyts for the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Mo 2 C and Ti 3 C 2 exhibited faradaic efficiencies of 90% (250 mV overpotential) and 65% (650 mV overpotential), respectively, for the reduction of CO 2 to CO in acetonitrile using an ionic liquid electrolyte. The use of ionic liquid 1-ethyl-2-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate as an electrolyte in organic solvent suppressed the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the catalytic active sites are oxygen vacancy sites on both MXene surfaces. Also, a spontaneous dissociation of adsorbed COOH species to a water molecule and adsorbed CO on Mo 2 C promote the CO 2 RR.

Conductivity, structure, and thermodynamics of Y 2 Ti 2 O 7 –Y 3 NbO 7 solid solutions

The defect fluorite yttrium niobate Y 3 NbO 7 and pyrochlore yttrium titanate Y 2 Ti 2 O 7 solid solutions have been synthesized via a solid state synthesis route. The resulting stoichiometry of the oxides is Y 2+x Ti 2-2x Nb x O 7 , where x = 0 to x = 1. All of the samples were single-phase; however, for those with a predominant fluorite phase, a small amount of additional pyrochlore phase was detected. The volume of the solid solution unit cells linearly increases with increase in yttrium niobate content. The water uptake increases with (x) and the protonic defect concentration reaches almost 4.5 × 10 -3 mol mol -1 at 300 °C. The calculated enthalpy of formation from oxides suggests strong stability for all of the compositions, with the values of enthalpy ranging from -84.6 to -114.3 kJ mol -1 . The total conductivity does not have a visible dependence on Y 3 NbO 7 content. For each compound, the total conductivity is higher in wet air. Interestingly, for samples where x < 0.5, the ratio of conductivity in hydrogen to air increases with increasing temperature, while for x > 0.5, the trend is the opposite.

An approach to separating Pu, U, and Ti from high-purity graphite for isotopic analysis by MC-ICP-MS

Information about elemental and isotopic systematics of ultra-trace level actinides (e.g. U and Pu) and main group elements (e.g. Ti) present within nuclear grade graphite is vital to the nuclear community for improved reactor operation and security. In support of this, extensive effort has been placed on improving analysis methods (i.e., inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry). However, significantly less effort has been devoted to the optimization of chemical separation methods. Within the separation community, commercially available Eichrom™ resins are often employed, as their elution characteristics for various elements have been well studied, but the direct optimization of actinides and trace metal separations from a single sample have not been widely investigated. Here, methods using various Eichrom pre-packed cartridges were explored to achieve separation of ultra-trace levels of U, Pu, and Ti from a variety of graphite samples. Once the validity of the combined separation scheme was established using certified reference materials, the method was applied to historic, unirradiated and irradiated, graphite samples. For all samples investigated, precise isotope ratio measurements for the titanium isotope systems were made.

Multiple and nonlocal cation redox in Ca–Ce–Ti–Mn oxide perovskites for solar thermochemical applications

Modeling-driven design of redox-active off-stoichiometric oxides for solar thermochemical H 2 production (STCH) seldom has resulted in empirical demonstration of competitive materials. Here, we report the theoretical prediction and experimental evidence that the perovskite Ca 2/3 Ce 1/3 Ti 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 3 is synthesizable with high phase purity, stable, and has desirable redox thermodynamics for STCH, with a predicted average neutral oxygen vacancy (VO) formation energy, E v = 3.30 eV. Flow reactor experiments suggest potentially comparable or greater H 2 production capacity than recent promising Sr–La–Mn–Al and Ba–Ce–Mn metal oxide perovskites. Utilizing quantum-based modeling of a solid solution on both A and B sub-lattices, we predict the impact of nearest-neighbor composition on E v and determine that A-site Ce 4+ reduction dominates the redox-activity of Ca 2/3 Ce 1/3 Ti 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 3 . X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements provide evidence that supports these predictions and reversible Ce 4+ -to-Ce 3+ reduction. Our models predict that Ce 4+ reduces even when it is not nearest-neighbor to the V O , suggesting that refinement of Ce stoichiometry has the possibility of further enhancing performance.

Structured illumination with thermal imaging (SI-TI): A dynamically reconfigurable metrology for parallelized thermal transport characterization

The recent push for the “materials by design” paradigm requires synergistic integration of scalable computation, synthesis, and characterization. Among these, techniques for efficient measurement of thermal transport can be a bottleneck limiting the experimental database size, especially for diverse materials with a range of roughness, porosity, and anisotropy. Traditional contact thermal measurements have challenges with throughput and the lack of spatially resolvable property mapping, while non-contact pump-probe laser methods generally need mirror smooth sample surfaces and also require serial raster scanning to achieve property mapping. Here, we present structured illumination with thermal imaging (SI-TI), a new thermal characterization tool based on parallelized all-optical heating and thermometry. Experiments on representative dense and porous bulk materials as well as a 3D printed thermoelectric thick film (~50 μm) demonstrate that SI-TI (1) enables paralleled measurement of multiple regions and samples without raster scanning; (2) can dynamically adjust the heating pattern purely in software, to optimize the measurement sensitivity in different directions for anisotropic materials; and (3) can tolerate rough (~3 μm) and scratched sample surfaces. Here, this work highlights a new avenue in adaptivity and throughput for thermal characterization of diverse materials.

Multiphase magnetism in Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7

We use neutron scattering to show that ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism coexist in the low T state of the pyrochlore quantum magnet Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . While magnetic Bragg peaks evidence long-range static ferromagnetic order, inelastic scattering shows that short-range correlated antiferromagnetism is also present. Small-angle neutron scattering provides direct evidence for mesoscale magnetic structure that we associate with metastable antiferromagnetism. Classical Monte Carlo simulations based on exchange interactions inferred from ⟨ 111 ⟩ -oriented high-field spin wave measurements confirm that antiferromagnetism is metastable within the otherwise ferromagnetic ground state. The apparent lack of coherent spin wave excitations and strong sensitivity to quenched disorder characterizing Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 is a consequence of this multiphase magnetism.

Structure of amorphous materials in the NASICON system Na 1+x Ti 2 Si x P 3−x O 12

Abstract The structure of glasses in the sodium (Na) super-ionic conductor (NASICON) system Na 1 + x Ti 2 Si x P 3 − x O 12 with x = 0.8 and x = 1.0 was explored by combining neutron and high-energy x-ray diffraction with 29 Si, 31 P and 23 Na solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The 29 Si magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra reveal that the silica component remains fully polymerized in the form of Si 4 units, i.e. the silicon atoms are bound to four bridging oxygen atoms. The 31 P{ 23 Na} rotational echo adiabatic passage double resonance (REAPDOR) NMR data suggest that the 31 P MAS NMR line shape originates from four-coordinated P n units, where n = 1, 2 or 3 is the number of bridging oxygen atoms per phosphorus atom. These sites differ in their 31 P- 23 Na dipolar coupling strengths. The results support an intermediate range order scenario of a phosphosilicate mixed network-former glass in which the phosphate groups selectively attract the Na + modifier ions. Titanium takes a sub-octahedral coordination environment with a mean Ti–O coordination number of 5.17(4) for x = 0.8 and 4.86(4) for x = 1.0. A mismatch between the P–O and Si–O bond lengths of 8% is likely to inhibit the incorporation of silicon into the phosphorus sites of the NASICON crystal structure.

Metallic and porous Ti nanorod arrays for visible-IR light absorption and dendrite-free stable lithium-metal batteries

It is still a challenging task to prepare highly porous nanorod arrays of metals formed on substrates for optical and energy storage applications. Herein, we demonstrate the design and synthesis of black color, metallic and highly porous Ti nanorod arrays as novel current collectors for dendrite-free and highly stable Li-metal anodes. The high porosity of metallic nanorod arrays provides numerous heterogeneous nucleation sites and huge contact area and large space for the accommodation of Li metal. The conductive metallic Ti nanorod arrays enhance electrode integration. Effectively, it eliminates formation Li dendrites and demonstrates superior cycling stability over 300 cycles. Additionally, the unique porous structures of the nanorod arrays can decrease the amplitude of forced vibration in narrow space leading to light absorption. Interestingly, the metal is black instead of metallic color. The black metallic nanorod arrays can absorb more than 96% of both visible and infra-red lights. Furthermore, this black color metallic porous nanorod arrays may find additional applications in aerospace, energy, biomedical, defence, and chemical industries.

Correlating electronic properties with M-site composition in solid solution Ti y Nb 2- y CT x MXenes

High electrical conductivity is desired in MXene films for applications such as electromagnetic interference shielding, antennas, and electrodes for electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications. Due to the acid etching-based synthesis method, it is challenging to deconvolute the relative importance that factors such as chemical composition and flake size contribute to resistivity. To understand the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the macroscopic electronic transport properties, a systematic study controlling compositional and structural parameters was conducted with eight solid solutions in the Ti y Nb 2-y CT x system. Here, in particular, we investigated the different roles played by metal (M)-site composition, flake size, and d-spacing on macroscopic transport. Hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry revealed changes to electronic structure induced by the M-site alloying. Consistent with the spectroscopic results, the low- and room-temperature conductivities and effective carrier mobility are correlated with the Ti content, while the impact of flake size and d-spacing is most prominent in low-temperature transport. The results provide guidance for designing and engineering MXenes with a wide range of conductivities.

Effect of Acid Etching Time in Ti 3 C 2 MXene’s Interlayer Spacing and Conductivity

Materials with sheet-like morphologies often form interconnected networks of layers or flakes, offering continuous channels for electron and ion transport in electrochemical energy storage applications. One such material is the recently discovered class of 2-D transition metal carbides/nitrides, called MXene, whose general formula is M n+1 X n T x (where M = transition metal; n = 1, 2, or 3; X = carbon or nitrogen; and T x = termination group such as –F, –OH, and/or =O). Ti 3 C 2 , one of the most studied MXene, can be synthesized by selectively etching the aluminum layer in Ti 3 AlC 2 (also called MAX phase). The most straightforward technique to exfoliate this layer is by wet-chemical etching with high-concentration hydrofluoric acid (HF). In this study, the effect of etching time on the morphology, interlayer spacing, and electrical conductivity of the resultant MXene was studied.

Optical properties of hydrothermally synthesized Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene quantum dots and their application in biosensor

The remarkable properties of Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene quantum dots (MQDs) highlight their potential in diverse fields, including domains such as biocompatible nanoprobe, ion sensing, energy applications etc. Given their relevance in emerging technologies, a systematic study of their optical properties is crucial. Structural Characteristics and Phase Evolution of Calcium-Reduced (Sm,Zr)(Fe,Co,Ti) 12 Particles

Magnetic materials are essential for applications in electronics, energy conversion and many other industrial and technological sectors. Among the permanent magnets, rare-earth magnets exhibit the strongest properties and dominate the market shares in related applications. However, due to the increasing cost and unstable supply, the research on reducing the rare-earth elements in magnets attracts significant increasing interest. Rare-earth-lean samarium transition metal (TM) compounds (SmTM 12 or 1:12 for short) have made breakthroughs in 2020 and the (Sm,Zr)(Fe,Co,Ti) 12 monocrystalline particles synthesized by a Ca reduction of elemental oxides at high temperature demonstrated an order of magnitude improvement in coercivity at room temperature. In this study, we made structural analysis of (Sm,Zr)(Fe,Co,Ti) 12 particles to elucidate the impact of synthesis conditions, microstructure and phase transformation on the evolution of magnetic properties.

Study of Key 57 Ni ⁢(𝑝,𝛾)⁢ 58 Cu Resonances to Understand 44 Ti Nucleosynthesis in Supernovae

An important validation of nucleosynthesis models of core-collapse supernovae is the comparison of radioisotope predictions to abundances inferred from observations of 𝛾 rays emitted in remnants. One such isotope, 44 Ti, is especially sensitive to the 57 Ni ⁢(𝑝,𝛾)⁢ 58 Cu reaction rate. Despite this importance, no experimentally constrained rate exists for this reaction. It is thus crucial to determine this rate. GRETINA ORRUBA: Dual Detectors for Experimental Structure Studies (GODDESS) was used along with the first use of the Enge split-pole spectrograph at Notre Dame to measure structure properties of 58 Cu via the 58 Ni ⁢( 3 He,𝑡)⁢ 58 Cu reaction. Here, the combined analysis of these complementary data sets allows for precise determination of 58 Cu level energies, and spins are constrained from analysis of the 𝛾-ray decay. 44 Ti yields were found to change by over 25% compared to previous estimates in model calculations using the new experimentally constrained reaction rate.

Ba ( Ti 1 - x , Zr x ) O 3 relaxors: Dynamic ferroelectrics in the gigahertz frequency range

Relaxor ferroelectrics are of great scientific and technological significance as they exhibit large and unusual responses to external stimuli. Their hallmark features are broadness and frequency dispersion of the peak in the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant. Both are believed to originate from the dynamics of polar nanoregions. Here, we apply first-principles-based molecular dynamics to resolve the gigahertz electric response of dynamically poled Ba (Ti 1 - x , Zr x ) O 3 ferroelectric relaxors that remained overlooked so far. We find that (i) the hallmark relaxor features continue to persist even in the dynamically poled structures, but do not necessarily originate from the polar nanoregions dynamics; (ii) dynamically poled samples exhibit polarization aging which leads to the frequency dependence of both remnant polarization and the Curie temperature; (iii) “dynamical” nature of the latter naturally explains the frequency dependence of the dielectric susceptibility maximum in dynamically poled Ba (Ti 1 - x , Zr x) O 3 ; and (iv) incorporation of the polarization aging into dielectric susceptibility expression explains its enhancing contribution in an intuitive way.

Ti-6Al-4V to over 1.2 TPa: Shock Hugoniot experiments, ab initio calculations, and a broad-range multiphase equation of state

Titanium alloys are used in a large array of applications. In this work we focus our attention on the most used alloy, Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64), which has excellent mechanical and biocompatibility properties with applications in aerospace, defense, biomedical, and other fields. Here we present high-fidelity experimental shock compression data measured on Sandia’s Z machine. We extend the principal shock Hugoniot for Ti64 to more than threefold compression, up to over 1.2 TPa. We use the data to validate our ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and to develop a highly reliable, multiphase equation of state (EOS) for Ti64, spanning a broad range of temperature and pressures. The first-principles simulations show very good agreement with Z data and with previous three-stage gas gun data from Sandia’s STAR facility. The resulting principal Hugoniot and the broad-range EOS and phase diagram up to 10 TPa and 10 5 K are suitable for use in shock experiments and in hydrodynamic simulations. The high-precision experimental results and high-fidelity simulations demonstrate that the Hugoniot of the Ti64 alloy is stiffer than that of pure Ti and reveal that Ti64 melts on the Hugoniot at a significantly lower pressure and temperature than previously modeled.

Local atomic and magnetic structure of multiferroic (Sr,Ba)⁢(Mn,Ti)⁢O 3

Here, we present a detailed study of the local atomic and magnetic structure of the type-I multiferroic perovskite system (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O 3 using x-ray and neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation (μSR) techniques. The atomic PDF analysis reveals widespread nanoscale tetragonal distortions of the crystal structure even in the paraelectric phase with average cubic symmetry, corresponding to incipient ferroelectricity in the local structure. Magnetic PDF analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and μSR likewise confirm the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the paramagnetic state, which grow in magnitude as the temperature approaches the magnetic transition. We show that these short-range magnetic correlations coincide with a reduction of the tetragonal (i.e., ferroelectric) distortion in the average structure, suggesting that short-range magnetism can play an important role in magnetoelectric and/or magnetostructural phenomena even without genuine long-range magnetic order. The reduction of the tetragonal distortion scales linearly with the local magnetic order parameter, pointing to spontaneous linear magnetoelectric coupling in this system. These findings provide greater insight into the multiferroic properties of (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O 3 and demonstrate the importance of investigating the local atomic and magnetic structure to gain a deeper understanding of the intertwined degrees of freedom in multiferroics.
