Plateau–Rayleigh instability with a grain boundary twist

We demonstrate using theoretical, computational, and experimental studies a morphological instability, in which a polycrystalline nanorod breaks up at grain boundaries (GBs) into an array of isolated domains. Our theoretical model is used to establish a neutral stability surface demarcating stable and unstable perturbations. It is shown that GBs play a destabilizing role in which the critical wavelength for the instability decreases with the increase in the GB energy. We carry out phase field simulations, which reveal accelerated pinch-off kinetics with the increase in the GB energy and predict temporal evolution of interfacial profiles in quantitative agreement with experimental observations.

Enumeration of Moiré patterns of a hexagonal twisted bilayer: Applications to intercalated transition metals

A real-space method using generating integers is used to determine possible commensurate lattice Moiré patterns for a bilayer of two equal hexagonal lattices, which can in principle be extended to lattice mismatched bilayers. These Moiré patterns can be classified by a pair of relatively prime integers (n,m), wherein a rotation θ(n,m) of the top hexagonal lattice maps its lattice vector (n,m) to (m,n) of the bottom lattice. Within this formulation, the area of the commensurate supercell is proportional to (n2+m2+nm) and the number of coincident lattice sites per supercell is given by (n−m)2. Taking bilayer boron nitride (BN) as an example, we present how to systematically generate Moiré patterns and explore the differences in local chemistry in the interstitial region by impurity intercalation. Systematic calculations of the properties of intercalated 3d transition metals were performed in an h-BN (4,3) bilayer, corresponding to a rotation of 9.43 degrees. These calculations reveal that local symmetry in the intercalated region significantly affect the energetics and magnetization of the intercalated species. These results highlight that Moiré pattern physics is not limited to optoelectronic/electronic phenomena, such as interfacial exciton formation or magic angle superconductivity, but it also produces chemical and magnetic atomic site selectivity, which may play important roles in adsorption, catalysis, or quantum information.

Electronic structure calculations of twisted multi-layer graphene superlattices

Quantum confinement endows two-dimensional (2D) layered materials with exceptional physics and novel properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Although certain two- and few-layer configurations of graphene have been realized and studied, a systematic investigation of the properties of arbitrarily layered graphene assemblies is still lacking. We introduce theoretical concepts and methods for the processing of materials information, and as a case study, apply them to investigate the electronic structure of multi-layer graphene-based assemblies in a high-throughput fashion. We provide a critical discussion of patterns and trends in tight binding band structures and we identify specific layered assemblies using low-dispersion electronic bands as indicators of potentially interesting physics like strongly correlated behavior. A combination of data-driven models for visualization and prediction is used to intelligently explore the materials space. This work more generally aims to increase confidence in the combined use of physics-based and data-driven modeling for the systematic refinement of knowledge about 2D layered materials, with implications for the development of novel quantum devices.

Twists and turns: stacking and structure-dependent optical response in MoS 2 nanoscrolls

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanoscrolls (NSs), specifically MoS 2 NSs, present unique structural and optical properties, exhibiting prominent photoluminescence (PL) signals despite their multilayer nature. Here, this study investigates the structural and spectroscopic characteristics of MoS 2 NSs, correlating them to show the effects of reduced interlayer interactions on excitons of MoS 2 NSs. The reduction in interlayer interaction arises from two main factors: (1) symmetry-broken mixed stacking due to misalignment between layers and (2) a highly inhomogeneous strain profile generated by the Archimedean spiral geometry with positive eccentricity. Transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and second harmonic generation measurements confirm these findings. Low-temperature PL spectroscopy explores the impact of reduced interlayer interactions on exciton properties such as exciton–phonon coupling and oscillator strength. This study provides crucial insights into the structure, stacking and unique optical properties of TMD NSs, advancing the understanding of interlayer interactions and their impacts in complex quasi-one-dimensional nanostructures.

Squeezing quantum states in three-dimensional twisted crystals

Bloch's theorem provides a conventional starting point for describing wave propagation in periodic media, but in ordered materials where competing spatial periods coexist it is rendered ineffective, often with dramatic consequences. Here we develop an alternate approach that uses coherent free-particle vortex states to study quantum states in supertwisted crystals: three-dimensional stacks of atomically thin two-dimensional layers. Here, this formalism leads naturally to the representation of the spectrum using squeezed coherent states, and it reveals the crucial role of a Coriolis coupling in the equations of motion. This identifies an underlying noncommutative geometry and novel edge state structure in a family of complex ordered structures.
