Superlattices are Greener on the Other Side: How Light Transforms Self-Assembled Mixed Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Perovskite nanocrystal superlattices (NC SLs) are the nearest real-world approximations to monodisperse NC ensembles. NC SLs thus represent ideal model systems for evaluating the optical and structural stability of CsPb(I 1– x Br x ) 3 NCs at a macroscopic level. Here, photoinduced changes to CsPb(I 1– x Br x ) 3 NC SLs (0 < x < 1.0) are probed via in situ photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy. We find that prolonged (~10–20 h) ultraviolet–visible irradiation causes irreversible PL blueshifts, photobrightening, and crystal structure contractions. These changes stem from gradual photoinduced I 2 sublimation, which transforms CsPb(I 1– x Br x ) 3 into CsPbBr 3 . Despite eliminating half of the initial halides from individual CsPb(I 0.53 Br 0.47 ) 3 particles, NCs within SLs remarkably preserve their initial crystallinity, cuboidal shapes, edge lengths, and size distributions. This work illustrates compositional control toward generating precisely engineered perovskite NC SLs. It also highlights iodide photo-oxidation as a hurdle that must be overcome if mixed halide perovskite nanomaterials are to be applied beyond fundamental studies.

Correction to “Self-Assembly of Accumulated Sphingolipids into Cytotoxic Fibrils in Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy and Their Inhibition by Small Molecules in Vitro”

Dr. Laor Bar-Yosef was significantly involved in the introduction and use of the Raman microspectroscopy part of this project. She was a major contributor to the novel conceptual use of this technology for detecting and monitoring sphingolipids in vitro and in cells. As expected from her deep involvement, Dr. Laor Bar-Yosef took part in analyzing the corresponding results.

Improved Self-Assembly of P3HT with Pyrene-Functionalized Methacrylates

A block copolymer with discotic liquid crystalline behavior was synthesized using Grignard metathesis polymerization (GRIM) and initiators for continuous activator regeneration atom transfer radical polymerization (ICAR-ATRP). A novel discotic liquid crystalline mesogen, 6-(pyren-1-yloxy)hexyl methacrylate (PyMA), comprises a block that is attached to regioregular poly(3- hexylthiophene) (rr-P 3 HT) generated by GRIM and subjected to end-group modification. Due to the continuous regeneration of Cu + in the reaction mixture in ICAR-ATRP compared to conventional methods, the synthesis was successfully performed with less catalyst. The purity and yield of the final product are increased by eliminating rigorous post-synthesis purification. Stacked pyrene units have contributed to the enhanced long-range π-π interactions and aligning of the P 3 HT block as observed in thin-film X-ray diffraction (XRD). Furthermore, field-effect mobilities in the order of 10 -2 cm 2 V -1 s -1 in bottom-gate, top-contact organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) suggest an enhancement in charge transport due to the discotic electron-rich pyrene units that help mitigate the insulating effect of the methacrylate backbone. The formation of uniform microdomains of P 3 HT-bpoly(PyMA) observed with tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TMAFM) on the channel regions of OFETs indicates the unique packing of the block copolymer in comparison to pristine P 3 HT. Thermotropic properties of the novel discotic mesogen in the presence and absence of P3HT were observed with both the poly(3-hexylthiophene)-b-poly(6-(pyren-1-yloxy)hexyl methacrylate) (P3HT-b-poly(PyMA)) block copolymer and poly(6-(pyren-1-yloxy)hexyl methacrylate) (poly(PyMA)) homopolymer using polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Actinide Separation Inspired by Self-Assembled Metal–Polyphenolic Nanocages

The separation of actinides has a vital place in nuclear fuel reprocessing, recovery of radionuclides, and remediation of environmental contamination. Here we propose a new paradigm of nanocluster-based actinide separation, namely, nanoextraction, that can achieve efficient sequestration of uranium in an unprecedented form of giant coordination nanocages using a cone-shaped macrocyclic pyrogallol[4]arene as the extractant. The U 24 -based hexameric pyrogallol[4]arene nanocages with distinctive [U 2 (PG) 2 ] binuclear units (PG = pyrogallol) that rapidly assembled in situ in monophasic solvent were identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering. Furthermore, comprehensive biphasic extraction studies showed that this novel separation strategy has enticing advantages such as fast kinetics, high efficiency, and good selectivity over lanthanides, thereby demonstrating its potential for efficient separation of actinide ions.
