A digital pitch and roll monitor

A digital pitch and roll monitor was developed that will provide an easy measurement of angle in two axes simultaneously to an accuracy of approximately 0.005 degree. This system provides advantages over any other commercially available angle-measuring device in that an inexperienced operator can obtain quick reliable measurements. The system utilizes three mutually perpendicular accelerometers, mounted on an inclinometer base, and the intelligent signal conditioning equipment needed to convert the output of these sensors to pitch and roll. The two-axis inclinometer consists of three mutually perpendicular accelerometers mounted on an inclinometer base, three digital multimeters to provide power to the accelerometers and digitize their output, a computer to calculate the angles, and a printer to provide hardcopy output.

Computer programs for the calculation of dual sting pitch and roll angles required for an articulated sting to obtain angles of attack and sideslip on wind-tunnel models

Two programs were developed to calculate the pitch and roll position of the conventional sting drive and the pitch of a high angle articulated sting to position a wind tunnel model at the desired angle of attack and sideslip and position the model as near as possible to the centerline of the tunnel. These programs account for the effects of sting offset angles, sting bending angles, and wind-tunnel stream flow angles. In addition, the second program incorporates inputs form on-board accelerometers that measure model pitch and roll with respect to gravity. The programs are presented and a description of the numerical operation of the programs with a definition of the variables used in the programs is given.

Vibration transmission through rolling element bearings. III - Geared rotor system studies

The bearing matrix formulations proposed by Lim and Singh (1990) are extended to analyze the overall dynamics of a geared rotor system which includes a spur gear pair, shafts, rolling-element bearings, a motor, a load, a casing, and flexible or rigid mounts. For this purpose, discrete vibration models are developed and used to predict vibration transmission through the bearings and to investigate the effects of the bearing, casing, and mount dynamics on the dynamic characteristics of the internal rotating system. Analytical predictions show that the theory is capable of predicting the bearing and mount moment transmissibilities in addition to the force transmissibilities. The predicted flexural vibrations of the casing plate are in good agreement with measurements conducted on an experimental set-up that consisted of a high-precision beam and pinion, and four identical rolling element bearings contained in a flexible casing mounted rigidly on a massive foundation.

Mixed convective-dynamic roll vortices and their effects on initial wind and temperature profiles

A new nonlinear 14-coefficient spectral model of two-dimensional shallow Boussinesq flow is developed and used to investigate the onset and development of both dynamically and convectively forced boundary-layer rolls. The model is developed to accept arbitrary basic-state wind profiles as dynamic forcing, using an Ekman profile to provide a means for easy comparison with other studies. The results are qualitatively compared with those of previous theoretical and observational investigations. The rolls are shown to significantly alter the initial wind profile in the sense found by Faller and Kaylor (1967) and Brown (1970), but via a mechanism independent of the Coriolis force.

Preliminary investigation of rolling moments obtained with spoilers on both slotted and plain wings

A wind-tunnel study has been made to determine the possibility of developing spoilers suitable for providing the lateral control for airplanes in place of the usual ailerons. The first tests were made on a model wing with a fixed tip slot, but when it was found that the effectiveness of the spoilers did not depend to any great extent on the slot, tests were made on a plain wing also. In both cases certain spoiler positions were found which were free from the usual adverse rolling moments with small deflections. Five different forms of spoiler were tested, the best ones being simple plates, either straight or slightly curved to fit the contour of the airfoil when not deflected. Sufficient rolling moment can probably be obtained from spoilers of reasonable size to provide satisfactory lateral control for certain types of airplanes.

Effect of length of Handley Page tip slots on the lateral-stability factor, damping in roll

Tests have been made in the NACA 7 by 10 foot wind tunnel on a Clark Y wing model equipped with various lengths of Handley Page slots extending inward from the wing tips. The slot lengths tested ranged from 20 to 100 per cent of the semi span. The effect of slot lengths on damping in roll was determined by means of both free-autorotation and forced-rotation test. In addition, the maximum lift coefficient was found with each slot length. The optimum length of slot for satisfactory damping in roll over a large range of angles of attack was found to be slightly over 50 per cent of the semispan for the form of slot tested.

Aerodynamic rolling and yawing moments produced by floating wing-tip ailerons, as measured by spinning balance

The investigation described in this report was made to determine the effectiveness of floating wing-tip ailerons as an airplane control in the spin. In these tests the ailerons, not being balanced, were set parallel to the axis of rotation, which is probably very nearly the attitude that balanced floating ailerons would assume in a spin. The tests were made with the spinning balance in the N.A.C.A. 5-foot vertical tunnel. The model was tested with and without the ailerons in 12 spinning attitudes chosen to cover the probable spinning range. Rolling- and yawing-moment coefficients are given as measured for the model with and without the ailerons, and computed values are given for the ailerons alone. The addition of floating wing-tip ailerons to the model doubled the rolling-moment coefficient and increased the yawing-moment coefficient by 0.05 and more. Both moments were in a sense to oppose the spin.

Effect of Taper Ratio on the Low-speed Rolling Stability Derivatives of Swept and Unswept Wings of Aspect Ratio 2.61

Results of tests conducted in the 6-foot-diameter rolling-flow test section of the Langley stability tunnel to determine the effects of varying taper ratio on the rolling and static stability characteristics of a swept wing are presented; results are also given for the effects of varying taper ratio on an unswept wing and for the effects of sweep on a tapered wing. All the models were of aspect ratio 2.61 and had NACA 0012 sections normal to the quarter-chord line. Taper ratios of 1.00, 0.50, and 0.25 and sweep angles of 0 degrees and 45 degrees were investigated.

The Use of the Rolled-up Vortex Concept for Predicting Wing-tail Interference and Comparison with Experiment at Mach Number of 1.62 for a Series of Missile Configurations Having Tandem Cruciform Lifting Surfaces

The method for predicting wing- tail interference whereby the trailing vortex system behind lifting wings is replaced by fully rolled-up vortices has been applied to the calculation of tail efficiency parameters, lift characteristics, and center -of-pressure locations for a series of generalized missile configurations. The calculations have been carried out with assumed and experimental vortex locations, and comparisons made with experimental data. The measured spanwise locations of the vortices for the inline case were found to be in good agreement with the asymptotic values computed from the center of gravity of the vorticity using the method of Lagerstrom and Graham. For the interdigitated configurations the measured spanwise locations were in only fair agreement with the asymptotic locations computed for the inline case. The vertical displacement of the vortices with angle of attack for both inline and interdigitated configurations was small. The method utilizing the rolled -up vortex concept was shown to give good results in the prediction of tail efficiency variations with angle of attack for inline configurations. Not as good correlation with experiment was shown for the interdigitated configurations. Complete configuration lift -curve slopes and center -of-pressure locations, obtained using t ail efficiency calculations together with the characteristics of the components obtained from available theoretical methods, showed excellent correlation with experimental results.

Effect of Variation of Chord and Span of Ailerons on Rolling and Yawing Moments at Several Angles of Pitch

This report presents the results of an extension to higher angles of attack of the investigation of the rolling and yawing moments due to ailerons of various chords and spans on two airfoils having the Clark Y and U. S. A. 27 wings. The measurements were made at various angles of pitch but at zero angle of roll and yaw, the wing chord being set at an angle of +4 degrees to the fuselage axis. In the case of the Clark Y airfoil the measurements have been extended to a pitch angle of 40 degrees, using ailerons of span equal to 67 per cent of the wing semispan and chord equal to 20 and 30 per cent of the wing chord. The work was conducted on wing models of 60-inch span and 10-inch chord.

Charts for the Determination of Wing Torsional Stiffness Required for Specified Rolling Characteristics or Aileron Reversal Speed

A series of charts are presented by which the wing torsional stiffness required to meet a given standard of rolling effectiveness may be quickly determined. The charts may also be used to obtain quickly the aileron reversal speed and the variation of the loss in rolling effectiveness with airspeed. The charts apply to linearly tapered wings and elliptical wings of tubular-shell construction having various aspect ratios with aileron span and location of ailerons as variables. In the derivation of the charts, induced lift effects have been taken into account and the form of the wing-torsional-stiffness curve has been assumed.

Some theoretical low-speed span loading characteristics of swept wings in roll and sideslip

The Weissinger method for determining additional span loading for incompressible flow is used to find the damping in roll, the lateral center of pressure of the rolling for wing plan forms of various aspect ratios, taper ratios, and sweep angles. In addition, the applicability of the method to the determination of certain other aerodynamic derivatives is investigated, and corrections for the first-order effects of compressibility are indicated. The agreement obtained between experimentally and theoretically determined values for the aerodynamic coefficients indicates that the method of Weissinger is well suited to the calculation of such resulting aerodynamic derivatives of wings as do not involve considerations of tip suction.

Estimation of the maximum angle of sideslip for determination of vertical-tail loads in rolling maneuvers

Report includes the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics Technical Reports 1135 through 1157. Recent experiences have indicated that angles of sideslip in rolling maneuvers may be critical in the design of vertical tails for current research airplanes having weight distributed mainly along the fuselage. Previous investigations have indicated the seriousness of the problem for the World War II type of airplane. This report presents some preliminary calculations for airplanes of current design, particularly with weight distributed primarily along the fuselage. The results of this study indicate that existing simplified expressions for calculating maximum sideslip angles to determine the vertical-tail loads in rolling maneuvers are not generally applicable to airplanes of current design.

Considerations involved in the design of a roll-angle computer for a bank-to-turn interceptor

At the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory some flight and analog computer studies have been made on the final attack phase of automatic interceptions. The ultimate objective of these studies is to define the behavior of various types of automatic control systems as influenced by a wide range of aerodynamic characteristics. This is a continuing program still in its initial stages; however, it is felt that conclusions of general significance can be drawn from these preliminary studies. One point of particular importance is the necessity for including a gain charger or computer in the azimuth loop of any bank-to-turn airplane or missile. This device translates azimuth error signals into appropriate roll commands. The results to date have shown that the characteristics of this component have a predominant effect on the behavior of a automatic system. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss considerations of importance in the design of a suitable roll-angle computer. In this regard, the present paper complements the analytical work reported in NACA RM L54E27, 1954.

Integrated aeroservoelastic synthesis for roll control

The objective of this study is to illustrate an integrated, parallel design procedure for optimal structural, aerodynamic, and aileron synthesis of an aircraft wing. The effects of combining weight minimization with structural tailoring (ply orientation and thickness) of a lifting surface, together with the wing geometry (sweep angle and taper ratio), and the aileron geometry (spanwise location and chordwise size) upon the lateral control effectiveness are discussed. Several optimization studies for the minimization of aileron hinge moment and wing weight, subject to a specified constant aircraft roll rate at a design airspeed (roll effectiveness), are performed.

Roll ring assemblies for the Space Station

Space Station Freedom requires the transmission of high power and signals through three different rotational interfaces. Roll ring technology was baselined by NASA for rotary joints to transfer up to 65.5 kW of power for 30 years at greater than 99 percent efficiency. Signal transfer requirements included MIL-STD-1553 data transmission and 4.5 MHz RS250A base and color video. A unique design for each rotary joint was developed and tested to accomplish power and signal transfer. An overview of roll ring technology is presented, followed by design requirements, hardware configuration, and test results.
