NASA Kennedy Space Center Indian River Lagoon Health Initiative Plan

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Medical and Environmental Services Division, which includes both the Environmental Management Branch (EMB) and Environmental Assurance Branch (EAB), identified lagoon health as a high priority for the mission. This document provides NASA KSC and its partners a plan which considers the unique relationship between the approximately 140,000-acre Federal property and the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) estuary on and adjacent to KSC, and proposes projects and restoration actions that will ensure NASA KSC’s continued role as a responsible steward promoting IRL health and biodiversity. Additionally, this document provides NASA KSC a reference document to enable informed decisions regarding future IRL health projects.

Portable tool removes burrs from pipe and tubing

Portable tool cleanly removes burrs that remain on tubing when it is cut. It restores the cut end to its original configuration, and carries away all chips and pieces. This tool is used in places of limited access where a larger tool could not be used.

LOGIC CIRCUIT↗

Exclusive-or logic circuit has useful properties

Single, simple exclusive-or logic connective eliminates excessive hardware and the number of interconnections between logic modules. This circuit performs the necessary switching for the exclusive-or operation and amplifies, restores, and inverts the signal.

Minimum permissible leakage resistance established for instrumentation systems

Mathematical formulas are used to determine if, and to what extent, an instrumentation system that has been exposed to the elements should be dried out to restore minimum permissible leakage resistance to ground. Formulas are also derived and used for an intermediate number of systems that are exposed to moisture penetration.

Some Theoretical Aspect of Cryosorption

When a gas or vapor is allowed to come to equilibrium with a solid surface, the concentration of gas molecules is always found to be greater in the immediate vicinity of the surface than in the free gas phase, regardless of the nature of the gas or of the surface. The process by which this surface excess is formed is termed adsorption. In any solid, the atoms at the surface are subject to unbalanced forces of attraction normal to the surface plane; the balance of forces is partially restored by the adsorption of gas molecules. If the forces responsible for adsorption are of van der Waals type, the process is called physical adsorption. Furthermore, if the solid (and its surface) are maintained at relatively low temperatures (say 50°K or below), the term cryosorption is used.

Eddy current disk valve

Quick-opening, intermittent flow valve requires a small amount of electrical energy to open and which closes by the restoring action of a rubber stop. This eddy current disk valve opens in less than 100 microseconds and takes only 10 joules of energy.

Solenoid hammer valve developed for quick-opening requirements

Quick-opening lightweight solenoid hammer valve requires a low amount of electrical energy to open, and closes by the restoring action of the mechanical springs. This design should be applicable to many quick-opening requirements in fluid systems.

Shallow grooves in journal improve air bearing performance

Bearing designs, which shape the surface to create artificial fluid-film wedges in the absence of any applied radial load, generate radial restoring forces to keep journals from whirling. Helical- or herringbone-grooved journals or rotors show most promise of stable operation, with no sacrifice in load capacity.

Multichannel analyzers at high rates of input

Multichannel analyzer, used with a gating system incorporating pole-zero compensation, pile-up rejection, and baseline-restoration, achieves good resolution at high rates of input. It improves resolution, reduces tailing and rate-contributed continuum, and eliminates spectral shift.

Highly stable biased amplifier and stretcher system

Amplifier and stretcher system, which minimizes thermal effects and compensates for repetition-rate effects, maintains resolution levels in spectrum analysis. An additional inverting amplifier is used in the system to provide a noiseless charge restorer.
