Shallow cloud variability in Houston, Texas, during the ESCAPE and TRACER field experiments

Shallow convection plays an important role in Earth's climate system by regulating the vertical transport of heat, moisture, and momentum in the lower troposphere. Aerosols, large-scale meteorology, and low-level convergence influence the spatiotemporal variability in shallow convection, and the coastal urban area of Houston, Texas, is an ideal laboratory to investigate these complex interactions. Here, geostationary satellite and ground-based radar observations from June to September 2022 during the TRacking Aerosol Convection interactions ExpeRiment (TRACER) and Experiment of Sea Breeze Convection, Aerosols, Precipitation, and Environment (ESCAPE) field campaigns are used to characterize the spatial coverage, vertical extent, and precipitation fraction of shallow convective clouds. The fused operational remote sensing datasets over a 250 km × 250 km domain are evaluated against profiling observations. The domain-wide diurnal shallow cloud fractions are used to identify four distinct modes of shallow convection. In all clusters, the domain-wide cloud fractions are consistently higher than the domain-wide precipitation fractions, and shallow cloud fractions are higher over water than they are over land, while the shallow precipitation fractions show the opposite behavior. In the two modes with minimal deep cloud activity, shallow cloud frequency is highest over ocean in the early morning, and there is a transition to higher shallow cloud frequency over land by the afternoon in one cluster or to high shallow cloud frequencies everywhere by the afternoon in the other. Lastly, we find regions with higher shallow cloud top heights and a large region along the coastline where shallow clouds are more likely to precipitate.

Surface tensions of propellants

An apparatus is described for determining the surface tension of propellants by measuring the maximum bubble pressure using two capillaries of different bores. The innovation is the use of a pressure transducer coupled to a bridge supply and a strip chart recorder for registering the development of the pressure difference as the bubble is formed and released. This enables the measurements to be made under controlled atmospheres and to be remotely operated. Preliminary experiments were done on propellant-grade hydrazine and monomethylhydrazine, and on purified hydrazine, at temperatures between 275.4 and 353.2 K. Straight-line expressions and logarithmic expressions reproduce equally well the variation of surface tension with temperature. Contaminated hydrazine, pre-exposed to coupons of 6Al-4V titanium alloy for long periods, gives slightly higher values of surface tension.

Teleoperators - A growth industry.

Teleoperators (remote operators), equipped with TV systems, manipulators, and highly mobile vehicles, can extend man's manipulative and sensory capabilities into distant or hazadous environments. It is shown how teleoperator technology will lead to autonomous robots, and from them and special purpose teleoperators, to a completely new industrial system. Various applications are described, and it is pointed out that teleoperators do not replace workers.

Automation in astronomy.

Description and evaluation of the remotely operated Lick Observatory Cassegrain focus of the 120-inch telescope. The experience with this instrument has revealed that an automated system can profoundly change the observer's approach to his work. This makes it difficult to evaluate the 'advantage' of an automated telescope over a conventional instrument. Some of the problems arising with automation in astronomy are discussed.

Nimbus 4 IRIS spectra in the 750-1250/cm atmospheric window region

Several Nimbus 4 IRIS spectra are presented for the 700-1300/cm region as examples of free atmosphere spectra to illustrate problems encountered in interpreting window measurements. Several atmospheric windows near 936 and 960/cm appear significantly more transparent than the 899/cm window presently used in operational remote sensing systems.

The Satellite Nuclear Power Station - An option for future power generation.

A new concept in nuclear power generation is being explored which essentially eliminates major objections to nuclear power. The Satellite Nuclear Power Station, remotely operated in synchronous orbit, would transmit power safely to the ground by a microwave beam. Fuel reprocessing would take place in space and no radioactive materials would ever be returned to earth. Even the worst possible accident to such a plant should have negligible effect on the earth. An exploratory study of a satellite nuclear power station to provide 10,000 MWe to the earth has shown that the system could weigh about 20 million pounds and cost less than $1000/KWe. An advanced breeder reactor operating with an MHD power cycle could achieve an efficiency of about 50% with a 1100 K radiator temperature. If a hydrogen moderated gas core reactor is used, its breeding ratio of 1.10 would result in a fuel doubling time of a few years. A rotating fluidized bed or NERVA type reactor might also be used. The efficiency of power transmission from synchronous orbit would range from 70% to 80%.

Principles and techniques of polarimetric mapping.

This paper introduces the concept and potential value of polarimetric maps and the techniques for generating these maps in operational remote sensing. The application-oriented polarimetric signature analyses in the literature are compiled, and several optical models are illustrated to bring out requirements of a sensor system for polarimetric mapping. By use of the concepts of Stokes parameters the descriptive specification of one sensor system is refined. The descriptive specification for a multichannel digital photometric-polarimetric mapper is based upon our experience with the present single channel device which includes the generation of polarimetric maps and pictures. High photometric accuracy and stability coupled with fast, accurate digital output has enabled us to overcome the handicap of taking sequential data from the same terrain.

Optical proximity sensors for manipulators

A breadboard optical proximity sensor intended for application to remotely operated manipulators has been constructed and evaluated in the laboratory. The sensing head was 20 mm x 15 mm x 10 mm in size, and could be made considerably smaller. Several such devices could be conveniently mounted on a manipulator hand, for example, to align the hand with an object. Type 1 and Type 2 optical configurations are discussed, Type 1 having a sharply defined sensitive volume, Type 2 an extended one. The sensitive volume can be placed at any distance between 1 cm and approximately 1 m by choice of a replaceable prism. The Type 1 lateral resolution was 0.5 mm on one axis and 5 mm perpendicular to it for a unit focused at 7.5 cm. The corresponding resolution in the axial direction was 2.4 cm, but improvement to 0.5 cm is possible. The effect of surface reflectivity is discussed and possible modes of application are suggested.

Test facility for 6000 hour life test of 30 cm mercury ion thruster

The environmental and instrumentation requirements for long term testing of electrical propulsion thrusters which impose severe and unusual requirements upon the simulation facility were studied. High speed ions ejected from a mercury thruster erode material from collecting surfaces, which is then scattered and redeposited upon other surfaces, with resultant damage to the chamber and test article. By collecting the thruster plume on a frozen mercury surface damage to the thruster and chamber by back-scattered erosion products was minimized. Provisions for unattended operation, remote data acquisition, personnel safety, and instrumentation for assessing thruster performance are also discussed.

Device for monitoring a change in mass in varying gravimetric environments

A remotely operable device for detecting changes as they occur in the mass of a selected specimen is described. The device is characterized by a balance beam including at one end a support for receiving a specimen having a changing mass and suspension means, including a flexure, supporting the beam near its center of gravity for pivotal movement proportional to changes occurring in the mass of the specimen. Strain gages coupled with the flexure provide a read-out indicative of the pivotal movement imparted to the beam.

Combined pressure regulator and shutoff valve

A remotely operable pressure regulator and shutoff valve particularly suited for achieving high resolution and flow control, and positive shutoff is described. The valve is characterized by a spring-loaded ball coaxially aligned with a fluid port to be sealed, a spring-loaded pintle extended through the port into engagement with the ball, for controlling the position, a spring-loaded diaphragm for controlling the position of the pintle, and an axially displaceable spring supported by a movable stop which, in turn, is repositioned by a selectively operable stepper motor. Thus, the pressure-response characteristics for the valve can be varied through a selective repositioning of the stop.

An investigation of turbulent transport in the extreme lower atmosphere

A model in which the Lagrangian autocorrelation is expressed by a domain integral over a set of usual Eulerian autocorrelations acquired concurrently at all points within a turbulence box is proposed along with a method for ascertaining the statistical stationarity of turbulent velocity by creating an equivalent ensemble to investigate the flow in the extreme lower atmosphere. Simultaneous measurements of turbulent velocity on a turbulence line along the wake axis were carried out utilizing a longitudinal array of five hot-wire anemometers remotely operated. The stationarity test revealed that the turbulent velocity is approximated as a realization of a weakly self-stationary random process. Based on the Lagrangian autocorrelation it is found that: (1) large diffusion time predominated; (2) ratios of Lagrangian to Eulerian time and spatial scales were smaller than unity; and, (3) short and long diffusion time scales and diffusion spatial scales were constrained within their Eulerian counterparts.

The Atmosphere Explorer spacecraft system

The Atmosphere Explorer Spacecraft incorporates an orbiting aeronomy laboratory designed to operate in the lower thermosphere. A three-axis stabilized platform capable of operating over a wide range of orbital altitudes, inclinations, solar aspect angles, and spin rates satisfies the science requirements for instrument orientation. An on-board propulsion subsystem allows operations at low-perigee altitudes without severe limitation of orbital lifetime. Programmable high-speed digital command and data handling, together with power supplied by solar cells and batteries, allows the spacecraft to be operated remotely in daylight or darkness. This configuration of spacecraft support subsystems fulfills the requirements for the various phases of the scientific mission.
