A Metallurgical Inspection Method to Assess the Damage in Performance-Limiting Nb 3 Sn Accelerator Magnet Coils

The design and production of Nb 3 Sn-based dipole and quadrupole magnets is critical for the realization of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Nb 3 Sn superconducting coils are aimed at enhancing the bending and focusing strengths of accelerator magnets for HL-LHC and beyond. Due to the brittle nature of Nb 3 Sn, the coil fabrication steps are very challenging and require very careful QA/QC. Flaws in the Nb 3 Sn filaments may lead to quenches, and eventually, performance limitation below nominal during magnet testing. A novel inspection method, including advanced non-destructive and destructive techniques, was developed to explore the root-causes of quenches occurring in performance-limiting coils. The most relevant results obtained for MQXF coils through this innovative inspection method are presented. This approach allows for precise assessment of the physical events associated to the quenches experienced b y magnet coils, mainly occurring under the form of damaged strands with transversely broken sub-elements. Coil-slice preparation, micro-optical observations of transverse and longitudinal cross-sections, and a deep etching technique of copper will be illustrated in the present work, with a focus on the results achieved for a CERN coil from a non-conforming quadrupole magnet prototype, and two coils fabricated in the US, in the framework of the Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP) collaboration, from two different non-conforming quadrupole magnets, respectively. The results obtained through the proposed inspection method will be illustrated.

Alternative solenoid compensation scheme for the FCC-ee interaction region

We present the optics design of the solenoid compensation scheme at the FCC-ee. The 2T solenoids from the experiments induce coupling on the beams, generating an increase on vertical emittance. This compensation scheme minimizes emittance growth, with a final value of approximately 5% of the nominal. A screening solenoid is placed around the Final Focus Quadrupoles to protect them from the experiment’s field. A skew quadrupole component is added to the Final Doublet, aligning the magnet axis to the rotated reference frame of the beam. Two anti-solenoids placed approximately ±20 m from the IP are used to cancel the field integral. The vertical orbit generated by the horizontal crossing angle in the detector field is compensated by vertical correctors placed right after the beam pipe separation and next to the final focus quadrupoles. We describe the IR optics in this scheme, including the detector solenoid and the magnetic elements used for compensation.

Optics reconstruction in the SCL section of the FNAL Linac

The Side-Coupled Linac (SCL) section of the FNAL linac accelerates the beam from 116 MeV to 401.5 MeV, operating at 22-24 mA beam current. Transverse focusing is performed by 32 quadrupoles, and the beam orbit is guided by 19 dipole correctors and measured by 29 BPMs. The bunch length is measured in a single location by a Bunch Shape Monitor (BSM). This paper presents a three-step reconstruction of the machine optics. First, the transverse and longitudinal Twiss parameters at the start of the SCL section are determined using quadrupole scans and BSM measurements at different settings of an upstream cavity. Second, the quadrupole calibrations are adjusted based on differential-trajectory measurements. Finally, the beam is propagated along the SCL linac using the code TraceWin. A comparison between TraceWin simulations and the beam envelope measured by the 12 wire scanners of the SCL linac was performed. Transverse and longitudinal beam parameters at the entrance and exit of the SCL section will be reported.

Phenomenological study on correlation between flow harmonics and mean transverse momentum in nuclear collisions

To assess the properties of the quark-gluon plasma formed in nuclear collisions, the Pearson correlation coefficient between flow harmonics and mean transverse momentum, \rho\left(v_{n}^{2},\left[p_{\mathrm{T}}\right]\right) ρ ( v n 2 , [ p T ] ) , reflecting the overlapped geometry of colliding atomic nuclei, is measured. \rho\left(v_{2}^{2},\left[p_{\mathrm{T}}\right]\right) ρ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) was found to be particularly sensitive to the quadrupole deformation of the nuclei. We study the influence of the nuclear quadrupole deformation on \rho\left(v_{n}^{2},\left[p_{\mathrm{T}}\right]\right) ρ ( v n 2 , [ p T ] ) in Au+Au and U+U collisions at RHIC energy using AMPT transport model, and show that the \rho\left(v_{2}^{2},\left[p_{\mathrm{T}}\right]\right) ρ ( v 2 2 , [ p T ] ) is reduced by the quadrupole deformation \beta_2 β 2 and turns to change sign in ultra-central collisions (UCC).

Development of Improved Noble Liquid Purity Measurements (Final Technical Report)

The main goal of the Detector R&D project supported by this grant, “Development of Improved Noble Liquid Purity Measurements”, was to perform a scoping study of the feasibility of trapping ions in a liquid argon medium using a radiofrequency (RF) quadrupole trap, and to subsequently use the population of trapped ions to make measurements of the properties of the liquid medium. Using RF quadrupole traps immersed in a noble liquid to trap ions may yield new capabilities to detect and quantify the presence of impurities, as well as enabling other measurements of the microphysics in a noble liquid environment. The major activities undertaken during this project include: the development of a simulation of ions in a liquid argon medium; the designing of a prototype RF quadrupole trap; and the setup of hardware to be used in testing the prototype in vacuum and gas conditions. The summary of these major activities is reported here.

High current, high-temperature operation test of the superconducting magnets in the RHIC yellow ring

We report on the tests conducted at the end of RHIC Run 21 to evaluate the operation of superconducting magnets in the RHIC yellow ring at higher currents – up to 5500 A for the arc dipoles and all other magnets on the dipole bus and the focusing arc quadrupoles, up to 5750 A for defocusing arc quadrupoles and up to 6000 A for the insertion quadrupoles Q1 through Q9 – and higher temperatures – up to 5.1 K – than routine. None of the magnets quenched. This is an encouraging finding as the superconducting magnet coils could reach up to 4.9 K during operation with the 275 GeV EIC hadron beams.

US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (MQXFA Final Design Report)

The MQXFA Quadrupole magnets will be installed in High Luminosity LHC to form the Q1 and Q3 inner triplet optical elements in front of the interaction points 1 (ATLAS) and 5 (CMS). A pair of MQXFA units is assembled in a stainless steel helium vessel, including the end domes, to make the Q1 Cold Mass or the Q3 Cold Mass. The US HL LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project* is responsible for the design, manufacturing and test of the Q1/Q3 Cold Masses and the complete MQXFA magnets. CERN provides the cryostat components and is responsible for integration and installation in HL LHC. The MQXFA quadrupoles have 150 mm aperture, 4.2 m magnetic length, nominal gradient of 132.2 T/m, and coil peak field of 11.3 T. They use Nb_3Sn conductor and a support structure made of segmented aluminum shells pre-loaded by using bladders and keys. This report presents the final design of the MQXFA quadrupole magnets.

Secondary Beamline Lattice Design at the MeV Test Area (MTA)

The MTA is currently configured to produce a secondary pion beam from a tungsten target, which subsequently generates muons from decay in flight. In its present lattice configuration, the currently installed air core quadrupoles are strength-limited in their ability to deliver a high muon flux to the end user. Recently, seven strong iron-core quadrupole spares from the 400-MeV Linac were acquired. Based on these quadrupoles, a new lattice has been designed that maximizes both pion transport and muon capture the line based on significantly shorter magnetic lengths, strong magnetic gradients, and consequently an enhanced angular acceptance. For this project, we demonstrated that the ratio of muons to pions increased by over an order of magnitude (approximately 75 for lattice configurations were studied), successfully capturing a phase space area as large as 13.2 [mm] x 24 [mRad] in simulation.

Measurement of the Energy Spread for CeC Project

The Coherent Electron Cooling requires small energy spread and uniformity of energy along the bunch. The diagnostics line is utilized for the measurement of the electron beam parameters. The beamline layout is shown in Fig. 1. Three quadrupoles after the linac are used to match beam into the common section. The main dipole is used to deflect beam towards common section. If it is switched off the beam goes to the diagnostics line. The beam optics in the diagnostics line is controlled by four quadrupoles. The deflecting cavity sweeping beam in the vertical direction follows the quadrupoles. Sector dipole is used for energy parameters measurement. It has deflection angle of 30 degrees. With diagnostics dipole switched off the beam propagated to the insertable slits system for emittance measurement. There are four profile monitors in the line, The first profile monitor (ACC YAG) is after the main dipole. The second profile monitor (YAG3) is in front of the diagnostics dipole after the deflecting cavity. YAG1 profile monitor is placed after the slits, and YAG2 profile monitor is placed after the diagnostics dipole. There is a solenoid between the deflecting cavity and YAG3. It is used for the beam energy measurement.

Geomagnetic field distortions and their effects on radiation belt particles.

One of the quadrupole terms in the main geomagnetic field is found to contribute to a north-south 'shear distortion' of the particle-drift shells, whereas one of the octupole components causes a longitude-dependent radial deformation and associated 'drift-shell splitting.' The collective action of all higher multipoles on trapped-particle motion is then used to analyze the 'true' anomalies or distortions of the internal geomagnetic field that are independent of the quadrupole-related eccentricity of the main dipole. These 'true' anomalies must originate in upper-mantle or crustal perturbations that lie relatively near the earth's surface on both sides of the mid-Atlantic ridge; they influence trapped-particle drift shells only where the latter have their closest approach to the earth (South Atlantic and South African areas). The quadrupole and octupole perturbations, on the other hand, obviously originate deep in the earth's core. In the final part of this review, we discuss the effects of external magnetospheric currents. A time-dependent symmetric ring current causes drift shells to be displaced radially, with associated particle acceleration; magnetopause currents introduce a day-night asymmetry, causing shell splitting.

Thermal conductivity and resonant multipole interactions.

Investigation of the influence of resonant multipole interactions on exchanges of rotational energy in molecular collisions, by means of a simple two-state impact-parameter approximation. It is found that dipole-quadrupole and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions can have a significant effect for molecules with low moments of inertia.

Design and fabrication of a basic mass analyzer and vacuum system

A two-inch hyperbolic rod quadrupole mass analyzer with a mass range of 400 to 200 amu and a sensitivity exceeding 100 packs per billion has been developed and tested. This analyzer is the basic hardware portion of a microprocessor-controlled quadrupole mass spectrometer for a Gas Analysis and Detection System (GADS). The development and testing of the hyperbolic-rod quadrupole mass spectrometer and associated hardware are described in detail.

Approximations for proton excitation of coronal ion fine structure

Explicit approximations that yield proton excitation cross sections and rate coefficients for fine-structure transitions in a wide variety of ions over the low and intermediate energy ranges are obtained in terms of the electric quadrupole transition probability and quadrupole radial integral of a given ion. The range of applicability of these approximations is discussed, and comparisons are made with available cross sections and rate coefficients. Values of quadrupole radial integrals are given for ground configurations of even-Z elements in higher stages of ionization. Proton excitation rate coefficients are computed for coronal transitions involving fine-structure levels in the ions Fe XIII, Fe XV, Fe XVIII, Fe XXI, and Ca XIII.

A High Resolution Spectroscopic Study of the Nu2 Band of Hydrogen Sulfide and the 1-0 Band of Hydrogen Iodide

A tunable diode laser spectrometer was constructed and used to study: (1) the effects of centrifugal distortion on the transition frequencies and strengths of the nu sub 2 band of H2S, and (2) nuclear quadrupole hyperfine structure in the 1-0 band of HI. A total of 126 line frequencies and 94 line strengths in the nu sub 2 band of H2S were measured. The average accuracy of the line frequency measurements was + or - 0.0016 cm. The line strengths were measured to an average accuracy of about 3 percent. The effect of the finite spectral width of the diode laser on the measurement of line strengths is discussed. The observed H2S line frequencies were fit to Watson's AS and NS reduced Hamiltonian in both the Ir and IIIr coordinate representations in order to determine the best set of rotation distortion constants for the upper state of the nu sub 2 band. Comparisons of the observed line strengths in this band to rigid rotor line strengths are also presented. Nuclear quadrupole hyperfine structure in the low J lines of the 1-0 band of HI was observed. The upper vibrational state nuclear quadrupole coupling constant, determined from the observed splittings, was -1850 MHz + or - 12 MHz or 1.2 percent + or - 0.7 percent larger than the ground state coupling constant.

Theoretical transition probabilities between the lowest 2S, 2P and 2D states of Na, K, Rb and Cs

Theoretical transition probabilities between the lowest 2S, 2P and 2D states of the alkali atoms Na through Cs have been computed using near Hartree-Fock quality Slater basis sets. The important core-valence correlation effects are incorporated explicitly by a configuration-interaction procedure. For Cs, the calculations were repeated using a Gaussian basis set so that relativistic effects could be incorporated through an effective core potential procedure. The best calculated electric quadrupole Einstein coefficients are Na(196.3/s), K(103.6/s), Rb(72.4/s) and Cs(19.7/s). Core-valence effects become increasingly important down the column, and reduce the quadrupole transition strengths to about the same degree as for the 2P-2S and 2D-2P dipole-allowed transitions. Relativistic effects increase the quadrupole moment of Cs, but less so than in Ba, presumably because the alkali 2D states are more diffuse.

Air broadening of the hydrogen halides. I - N2-broadening and shifting in the HCl fundamental

The resolvent operator formalism of Kolb, Griem (1964), and Baranger (1962) is used to determine the widths and shifts of the fundamental band vibration-rotation lines of HCl under N2 pressure. Time-development operator matrix elements are evaluated accounting for all bilinear and second order anisotropic terms, in addition to isotropic effects to all orders. The method employs the use of a parabolic trajectory model and explicit velocity averaging. The major contributions to the linewidths are found to arise from dipole-quadrupole, quadrupole-quadrupole, and vibrationally dependent isotropic dispersion forces. Good overall agreement is found between calculated and measured widths and linewidths over a 163-295 K temperature range.

Changes in the orbital periods of close binary stars

A number of close binary stars show erratic changes in their orbital periods on time scales of order 5-10 yr. Recently it has been proposed that the period changes are the result of changes in the quadrupole moment of one star, caused in turn by an alteration of the internal structure of that star. Magnetic pressure, which either distorts the shape of the star or changes its tidally induced quadrupole moment, is suggested as the driving force behind the alteration. Here, the amount of energy required to distort one component of a binary and match the observed period changes is estimated. The rate at which energy is produced or lost is governed by the thermal time scale of the star, and the estimates indicate that the observed period changes would take at least 1000 yr for the tidal quadrupole mechanism, and of order 60 yr to match a period change in V471 Tau which took only 4 yr.
