Apollo CSM Power Generation System Design Considerations, Failure Modes and Lessons Learned

The objectives of this slide presentation are to: review the basic design criteria for fuel cells (FC's), review design considerations during developmental phase that affected Block I and Block II vehicles, summarize the conditions that led to the failure of components in the FC's, and state the solution implemented for each failure. It reviews the location of the fuel cells, the fuel cell theory the design criteria going into development phase and coming from the development phase, failures and solutions of Block I and II, and the lessons learned.

Mo(3)Sb(7-x)Te(x) for Thermoelectric Power Generation

Compounds having compositions of Mo(3)Sb(7-x)Te(x) (where x = 1.5 or 1.6) have been investigated as candidate thermoelectric materials. These compounds are members of a class of semiconductors that includes previously known thermoelectric materials. All of these compounds have complex crystalline and electronic structures. Through selection of chemical compositions and processing conditions, it may be possible to alter the structures to enhance or optimize thermoelectric properties.

Phase change material thermal power generator

An energy producing device, for example a submersible vehicle for descending or ascending to different depths within water or ocean, is disclosed. The vehicle comprises a temperature-responsive material to which a hydraulic fluid is associated. A pressurized storage compartment stores the fluid as soon as the temperature-responsive material changes density. The storage compartment is connected with a hydraulic motor, and a valve allows fluid passage from the storage compartment to the hydraulic motor. An energy storage component, e.g. a battery, is connected with the hydraulic motor and is charged by the hydraulic motor when the hydraulic fluid passes through the hydraulic motor. Upon passage in the hydraulic motor, the fluid is stored in a further storage compartment and is then sent back to the area of the temperature-responsive material.

Toward Hall MHD Power Generation and Drag Augmentation Using a Coaxial-Electrode Configuration During Hypersonic Entry

Planetary EDL requires that a spacecraft must reduce its relative velocity from multiple km/s to zero for safe landing. The entry phase requires slowing down through an intense hypersonic flight regime (Mach 25 to Mach 5). Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is a next-generation concept with a wide untapped set of technologies that can expand planetary exploration capabilities and create more robust entry vehicles by utilizing in-situ resources, increasing control authority, and reducing heat flux. There is therefore a need for an experimentally validated simulation tool for MHD technologies in hypersonic entry.

Thermoelectric power generation and mineral extraction from brines

Disclosed herein is a method and apparatus that uses a brine from a well that is used to both generate electricity and recover valuable minerals present in the brine. The method and apparatus uses a hydrophobic membrane to separate water vapor from the brine to concentrate the brine that is then used to recover the minerals.

Hydrogen Enrichment for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Gas Turbine (SOFC/GT) Hybrid Power Generation Systems Using Mechanical Gas Separation

This presentation, given at the 37 th annual Pittsburgh Coal Conference on September 8-11, 2020, includes information on the process, previous work, normal and oblique shocks model, diffuser design model, and calculation results (expansion, recompression with no losses, and recompression with mass depletion). Summary includes the concept of aerodynamic separation of water and carbon dioxide from a SYNGAS stream and that deposition was modeled by mass depletion from a compressible flow.

Oxy-fuel combustion and power generation system

Integration of an oxyfuel combustion boiler at elevated pressures and a heat exchanger is achieved to produce carbon dioxide by feeding flue gas comprising carbon dioxide and water from the oxyfuel combustion boiler to a direct contact cooler column wherein water is condensed at a temperature of 0 to 10° C. lower than its dew point; feeding a portion of the condensed water from the direct contact cooler column to the oxyfuel combustion boiler; feeding a portion of the carbon dioxide from the direct contact cooler column to the oxyfuel combustion boiler; and recovering a portion of the carbon dioxide from the direct contact cooler column.
