Performance analysis of grazing incidence imaging systems

An exact expression relating the coordinates of a point on the incident ray, a point of reflection from an arbitrary surface, and a point on the reflected ray is derived. The exact relation is then specialized for the case of grazing incidence, and first order and third order systematic analyses are carried out for a single reflective surface and then for a combination of two surfaces. The third order treatment yields a complete set of primary aberrations for single element and two element systems. The importance of a judicious choice for a coordinate system in showing field curvature to clearly be the predominant aberration for a two element system is discussed. The validity of the theory is verified through comparisons with the exact ray trace results for the case of the telescope.

Performance Analysis of the Spaceborne Laser Ranging System

The 'spaceborne laser ranging system' is a proposed short pulse laser on board an orbiting spacecraft. It measures the distances between the spacecraft and many laser retroreflectors (targets) deployed on the earth's surface. The precision of these range measurements was assumed to be about plus or minus 2 cm. These measurements were then used together with the orbital dynamics of the spacecraft to derive the intersite vector between the laser ground targets. The errors associated with this vector were on the order of 1 to 2 cm. The baseline distances determined range from 25 km to 1200 km. By repeating the measurements of the intersite vector, strain and strain rate errors were estimated. The realizable precision for intersite distance determination was estimated to be on the order of 0.5 cm at 300 km and about 1.5 cm at 1200 km. The corresponding inaccuracies for the intersite distances were larger, than is 1 cm and 3.5 cm respectively. The corresponding precision in the vertical direction was 1 cm and 3 cm.

Performance analysis and simulation of the SPS reference phase control system

Key results pertinent to the SPS reference phase control system design are summarized. These results are a consequence of extensive system engineering tradeoffs provided via mathematical modeling, optimization, analysis and the development/utilization of a computer simulation tool called SOLARSIM.

Performance analysis for the expanding search PN acquisition algorithm

An approach is described for approximating the cumulative probability distribution of the acquisition time of the serial pseudonoise (PN) search algorithm. The results are applicable to both variable and fixed dwell time systems. The theory is developed for the case where some a priori information is available on the PN code epoch (reacquisition problem or acquisition of very long codes). Also considered is the special case of a search over the whole code. The accuracy of the approximation is demonstrated by comparisons with published exact results for the fixed dwell time algorithm.

Computer code for off-design performance analysis of radial-inflow turbines with rotor blade sweep

The analysis procedure of an existing computer program was extended to include rotor blade sweep, to model the flow more accurately at the rotor exit, and to provide more detail to the loss model. The modeling changes are described and all analysis equations and procedures are presented. Program input and output are described and are illustrated by an example problem. Results obtained from this program and from a previous program are compared with experimental data.

Design and performance analysis of a conical-aerobrake, orbital-transfer vehicle concept

A Shuttle-compatible systems design based on the core concept of attachable modules for the major vehicle components is proposed. The principal features include a disposable cargo/extra-propellant tank module; a porous, radiative, backscattering drag-brake surface material of thin silica cloth; and a lightweight carbon-composite support structure. The mission payload capability for delivery, retrieval, and combined operations is determined for a broad range of missions including NASA/DOD requirements and extending through cis-lunar space. The effects of finite-rate surface catalysis, negative lift, and multiple atmospheric passes in reducing the aerothermal heating rates are also investigated. In addition, the structural and thermal-protection problems of the drag-brake support apparatus are analyzed and recommendations are proposed for future design refinements.

Performance analysis of radiation cooled dc transmission lines for high power space systems

As space power levels increase to meet mission objectives and also as the transmission distance between power source and load increases, the mass, volume, power loss, and operating voltage and temperature become important system design considerations. This analysis develops the dependence of the specific mass and percent power loss on hte power and voltage levels, transmission distance, operating temperature and conductor material properties. Only radiation cooling is considered since the transmission line is assumed to operate in a space environment. The results show that the limiting conditions for achieving low specific mass, percent power loss, and volume for a space-type dc transmission line are the permissible transmission voltage and operating temperature. Other means to achieve low specific mass include the judicious choice of conductor materials. The results of this analysis should be immediately applicable to power system trade-off studies including comparisons with ac transmission systems.

Performance analysis of an adaptive multiple access scheme for the message service of a land mobile satellite experiment (MSAT-X)

This paper describes an Adaptive Mobile Access Protocol (AMAP) for the message service of MSAT-X., a proposed experimental mobile satellite communication network. Message lengths generated by the mobiles are assumed to be uniformly distributed. The mobiles are dispersed over a wide geographical area and the channel data rate is limited. AMAP is a reservation based multiple access scheme. The available bandwidth is divided into subchannels, which are divided into reservation and message channels. The ALOHA multiple access scheme is employed in the reservation channels, while the message channels are demand assigned. AMAP adaptively reallocates the reservation and message channels to optimize the total average message delay.

Performance analysis of a cascaded coding scheme with interleaved outer code

A cascaded coding scheme for a random error channel with a bit-error rate is analyzed. In this scheme, the inner code C sub 1 is an (n sub 1, m sub 1l) binary linear block code which is designed for simultaneous error correction and detection. The outer code C sub 2 is a linear block code with symbols from the Galois field GF (2 sup l) which is designed for correcting both symbol errors and erasures, and is interleaved with a degree m sub 1. A procedure for computing the probability of a correct decoding is presented and an upper bound on the probability of a decoding error is derived. The bound provides much better results than the previous bound for a cascaded coding scheme with an interleaved outer code. Example schemes with inner codes ranging from high rates to very low rates are evaluated. Several schemes provide extremely high reliability even for very high bit-error rates say 10 to the -1 to 10 to the -2 power.

Performance analysis of advanced spacecraft TPS

For the Space Shuttle several types of ceramic heat shield materials were developed, both flexible and rigid. Improvements on the materials are continuously evolving. Material properties that have been studied and improved are high temperature limits, material strength, surface ruggedness, and surface catalycity. The results are presented of preliminary analyses concerning the thermal protection systems of future spacecraft and their sensitivity to the above material properties.

Performance analysis of replication ALOHA for fading mobile communications channels

This paper describes an ALOHA random access protocol for fading communications channels. A two-state Markov model is used for the channel error process to account for the channel fading memory. The ALOHA protocol is modified to send multiple contiguous copies of a message at each transmission attempt. Both pure and slotted ALOHA channels are considered. The analysis is applicable to fading environments where the channel memory is short compared to the propagation delay. It is shown that smaller delay may be achieved using replications and, in noisy conditions, can also improve throughput.

Performance analysis of advanced spacecraft TPS

The analysis on the feasibility for using metal hydrides in the thermal protection system of cryogenic tanks in space was based on the heat capacity of ice as the phase change material (PCM). It was found that with ice the thermal protection system weight could be reduced by, at most, about 20 percent over an all LI-900 insulation. For this concept to be viable, a metal hydride with considerably more capacity than water would be required. None were found. Special metal hydrides were developed for hydrogen fuel storage applications and it may be possible to do so for the current application. Until this appears promising further effort on this feasibility study does not seem warranted.
