Gravity Probe Spin: Prospects for measuring general-relativistic precession of intrinsic spin using a ferromagnetic gyroscope

An experimental test at the intersection of quantum physics and general relativity is proposed: measurement of relativistic frame dragging and geodetic precession using intrinsic spin of electrons. Furthermore, the behavior of intrinsic spin in spacetime dragged and warped by a massive rotating body is an experimentally open question, hence the results of such a measurement could have important theoretical consequences. Such a measurement is possible by using mm-scale ferromagnetic gyroscopes in orbit around the Earth. Under conditions where the rotational angular momentum of a ferromagnet is sufficiently small, a ferromagnet’s angular momentum is dominated by atomic electron spins and is predicted to exhibit macroscopic gyroscopic behavior. If such a ferromagnetic gyroscope is sufficiently isolated from the environment, rapid averaging of quantum uncertainty via the spin-lattice interaction enables readout of the ferromagnetic gyroscope dynamics with sufficient sensitivity to measure both the Lense-Thirring (frame dragging) and de Sitter (geodetic precession) effects due to the Earth.

Prospects for simulating a qudit-based model of (1+1)D scalar QED

We present a gauge invariant digitization of (1+1)d scalar quantum electrodynamics for an arbitrary spin truncation for qudit-based quantum computers. We provide a construction of the Trotter operator in terms of a universal qudit-gate set. Here, the cost savings of using a qutrit based spin-1 encoding versus a qubit encoding are illustrated. We show that a simple initial state could be simulated on current qutrit based hardware using noisy simulations for two different native gate set.

Prospects for distinguishing supernova models using a future neutrino signal

The next Galactic core-collapse supernova (SN) should yield a large number of observed neutrinos. Here, using Bayesian techniques, we show that with a SN at a known distance up to 25 kpc, the neutrino events in a water Cherenkov detector similar to Super-Kamiokande (SK) could be used to distinguish between seven one-dimensional neutrino emission models assuming no flavor oscillations or the standard Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect. Some of these models could still be differentiated with a SN at a known distance of 50 kpc. We also consider just the relative distributions of neutrino energy and arrival time predicted by the models and find that a detector like SK meets the requirement to distinguish between these distributions with a SN at an unknown distance up to $\mathrm{\sim 10 kpc.}$

Neutrino-portal dark matter detection prospects at a future muon collider

With no concrete evidence for nongravitational interactions of dark matter to date, it is natural to wonder whether dark matter couples predominantly to the Standard Model (SM)’s neutrinos. Neutrino interactions (and the possible existence of additional neutrinophilic mediators) are substantially less understood than those of other SM particles, yet this picture will change dramatically in the coming decades with new neutrino sources. One potential new source arises with the construction of a high-energy muon collider (MuCol); due to muons’ instability, a MuCol is a source of high-energy collimated neutrinos. Importantly, since the physics of muon decays (into neutrinos) is very well-understood, this leads to a neutrino flux with systematic uncertainties far smaller than fluxes from conventional high-energy (proton-sourced) neutrino beams. In this work, we study the capabilities of a potential neutrino detector, “ MuCol ν ”, placed ∼ 100 m downstream of the MuCol interaction point. The MuCol ν detector would be especially capable of searching for a neutrinophilic mediator ϕ through the mononeutrino scattering process ν μ N → μ + ϕ X , exceeding searches from other terrestrial approaches for m ϕ in the ∼ few MeV- ten GeV range. Even with a 10 kg-yr exposure, MuCol ν is capable of searching for well-motivated classes of thermal freeze-out and freeze-in neutrino-portal dark matter. Prospects for Light Dark Matter Searches at Large-Volume Neutrino Detectors

We propose a new approach to search for light dark matter (DM), with keV–GeV mass, via inelastic nucleus scattering at large-volume neutrino detectors such as Borexino, DUNE, Super-K, Hyper-K, and JUNO. The approach uses inelastic nuclear scattering of cosmic-ray boosted DM, enabling a low-background search for DM in these experiments. Large neutrino detectors, with higher thresholds than dark matter detectors, can be used, since the nuclear deexcitation lines are O ( 10 ) MeV . Using a hadrophilic dark-gauge-boson-portal model as a benchmark, we show that the nuclear inelastic channels generally provide better sensitivity than the elastic scattering for a large region of light DM parameter space.
