Scalable neutral H 2 O 2 electrosynthesis by platinum diphosphide nanocrystals by regulating oxygen reduction reaction pathways

Despite progress in small scale electrocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) using a rotating ring-disk electrode, further work is needed to develop a non-toxic, selective, and stable O 2 -to-H 2 O 2 electrocatalyst for realizing continuous on-site production of neutral hydrogen peroxide. We report ultrasmall and monodisperse colloidal PtP 2 nanocrystals that achieve H 2 O 2 production at near zero-overpotential with near unity H 2 O 2 selectivity at 0.27 V vs. RHE. Density functional theory calculations indicate that P promotes hydrogenation of OOH* to H 2 O 2 by weakening the Pt-OOH* bond and suppressing the dissociative OOH* to O* pathway. Atomic layer deposition of Al 2 O 3 prevents NC aggregation and enables application in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with a maximum r(H 2 O 2 ) of 2.26 mmol h -1 cm -2 and a current efficiency of 78.8% even at a high current density of 150 mA cm -2 . Catalyst stability enables an accumulated neutral H 2 O 2 concentration in 600 mL of 3.0 wt% (pH = 6.6).

Inelastic scattering in isotopologues of O 2 –Ar: the effects of mass, symmetry, and density of states

The two species considered here, O 2 (oxygen molecule) and Ar (argon-atom), are both abundant components of Earth's atmosphere and hence familiar collision partners in this medium. O 2 is quite reactive and extensively involved in atmospheric chemistry, including Chapman's cycle of the formation and destruction of ozone; while Ar, like N 2 , typically plays the nevertheless crucial role of inert collider. Inert species can provide stabilization to metastable encounter-complexes through the energy transfer associated with inelastic collisions. The interplay of collision frequency and energy transfer efficiency, with state lifetimes and species concentrations, contributes to the rich and varied chemistry and dynamics found in diverse environments ranging from planetary atmospheres to the interstellar and circumstellar media. The nature and density of bound and resonance states, coupled electronic states, symmetry, and nuclear spin-statistics can all play a role. Here, we systematically investigate some of those factors by looking at the O 2 –Ar system, comparing rigorous quantum-scattering calculations for the 16 O 16 O– 40 Ar, 18 O 16 O– 40 Ar, and 18 O 18 O– 40 Ar isotope combinations. A new accurate potential energy surface was constructed for this purpose holding the O 2 bond distance at its vibrationally averaged distance.

Effect of ZnO and PEDOT:PSS charge selective layers on photovoltage of cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) heterojunction solar cells

Electrochemical deposition (ECD) of Cu 2 O provides a scalable and low temperature pathway to solar cells with a theoretical high energy conversion efficiency of 23%, based on the 2.0–2.2 eV band gap of Cu 2 O. However, existing ECD-Cu 2 O devices are plagued by poor crystallinity and low selectivity of the electron and hole transport layers. Here we use Vibrating Kelvin Probe Surface Photovoltage Spectroscopy (VKP-SPV) to probe the charge transfer selectivity in FTO/ZnO/Cu 2 O/PEDOT:PSS/Ni heterojunction solar cells. Selective electron extraction is achieved at the ZnO back contact to Cu 2 O, as confirmed by a negative surface photovoltage signal. While the uncoated Cu 2 O surface is electron-selective due to the formation of a hole depletion layer, spin coating of a PEDOT:PSS film turns it into a hole-selective interface. After adding nickel metal ink top electrodes, functional 1.0 cm 2 solar cells with power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 0.07%, 195 mV open-circuit voltage, and 1.28 mA cm –2 short-circuit photocurrent are achieved. The photovoltaic performance is higher for aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO) substrates than for fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) due to the presence of a n-/p-junction that further increases the electron selectivity of the AZO/ZnO/Cu 2 O contacts. Overall, this work demonstrates the first application of PEDOT:PSS as a hole transport layer (HTL) for Cu 2 O and the use of VKP-SPV to measure the photovoltage contributions of the Cu 2 O interfaces. Furthermore, the ability to fabricate Cu 2 O solar cells at near room temperature without the use of vacuum methods or rare elements is an important step towards a scalable Cu 2 O PV technology.

Structural complexity in the f -block: small deviations of the complexation of lanthanides by O,Oʹ -diethylmonothiophosphate

Dithiophosphinic acids undergo radiolytic degradation during the extraction of actinides in used nuclear fuel. These will degrade into monothiophosphinic acids and then to phosphinic acids. To elucidate how the complexes that are formed during these radioactive separations change as the ligand degrades, the mixed donor ligand O,O′- diethylmonothiophosphate is chosen as an analog for the monothiophosphinic intermediate. Herein, the monothiophosphate complexes Ln 2 (OPS(OEt) 2 ) 6 (H 2 O) 8 (Ln = La) (La 2 L 6 H 2 O), Ln 2 (OPS(OEt) 2 ) 6 (EtOH) 4 (Ln = La) (La 2 L 6 EtOH), K 2 [Ln(OPS(OEt) 2 ) 5 (H 2 O) 2 ]·H 2 O·CH 2 Cl 2 , (Ln = Ce) (CeL 5 -α), K 2 [Ln(OPS(OEt) 2 ) 5 (H 2 O) 2 ]·H 2 O·CH 2 Cl 2 , (Ln = Pr) (PrL 5 -β), K[Ln(OPS(OEt) 2 ) 4 (H 2 O) 3 ], (Ln = Pr, Sm-Er) (ML 4 ), and K 3 [Ln(OPS(OEt) 2 ) 6 ], (Ln = Dy) (DyL 6 ) were synthesized and characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy. Although the lanthanides contract in a nearly linear fashion, the structural changes observed as the f-block is traversed in these compounds are not necessarily a hard line but more so a blend of different structure types possible for each f-element. Furthermore, comparison of the Ln−O bond lengths shows a nearly linear contraction, but the Ln−S bond lengths do not monotonically decrease because of the hard Lewis acidity of the Ln 3+ cations.

Optical properties of vacancies in aluminum oxide (𝛼−Al 2 ⁢O 3 ) from first principles

We employ first-principles calculations based on hybrid density functional theory to investigate the structural and optical properties of the oxygen vacancy (𝑉 O ) and aluminum vacancy (𝑉 Al ) in 𝛼−Al 2 ⁢O 3 , the most stable (corundum) phase of alumina. Our calculations facilitate the identification of experimental excitation and luminescence spectra with specific electronic transitions at the vacancy sites. The absorption line shape for excitation of an electron at 𝑉$^0_O$ to the conduction-band minimum (CBM) is in excellent agreement with the 6.1 eV band detected by optical absorption spectroscopy, and we find that the 5.9 eV absorption band is generated by an internal electron transition at 𝑉$^0_O$. We confirm that the slowly decaying 3.0 eV emission band of the 𝐹 center is due to a triplet-singlet transition at 𝑉$^0_O$. Our calculations also reveal that the 4.8 eV/5.4 eV absorption and 3.8 eV emission bands assigned to the 𝐹 + center are generated by internal transitions at 𝑉$^{+1}_O$. The line shape for the excitation of an electron from 𝑉$^{+1}_O$ to the CBM agrees well with an absorption band at 6.4 eV, while the recombination of an electron with 𝑉$^{+2}_O$ also produces luminescence around 3.8 eV, but with a considerably broader line shape. For Al vacancies, we confirm that the most prevalent configuration in 𝛼−Al 2 ⁢O 3 is a split-vacancy configuration 𝑉 Al,s , and we calculate migration barriers for different directions in the corundum crystal. We predict absorption and emission spectra for the excitation and recombination of an electron localized at 𝑉$^{−3}_{Al}$ and 𝑉$^{−3}_{Al,s}$ sites with the CBM. The line shapes of the two 𝑉 Al configurations overlap and are considerably broader than the spectra corresponding to 𝑉 O .

Thermal properties of field-assisted-sintered SiCN–Y 2 O 3 composites

Polymer-derived amorphous SiCN has excellent high-temperature stability and properties. To reduce the shrinkage during pyrolysis and to improve the high-temperature oxidation resistance, Y 2 O 3 was added as a filler. In this study, polymer-derived SiCN–Y 2 O 3 composites were fabricated by mixing a polymeric precursor of SiCN with Y 2 O 3 submicron powders in different ratios. The mixtures were cross-linked and pyrolyzed in argon. SiCN–Y 2 O 3 composites were processed using field-assisted sintering technology at 1350°C for 5 min under vacuum. Dense SiCN–Y 2 O 3 composite pellets were successfully made with relative density higher than 98% and homogeneous microstructure. Due to low temperature and short time of the heat-treatment, the grain growth of Y 2 O 3 was substantially inhibited. The Y 2 O 3 grain size was ~1 μm after sintering. The composites’ heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal expansion coefficients were characterized as a function of temperature. The thermal conductivity of the composites ceramics decreased as the amount of amorphous SiCN increased and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the composites increased with Y 2 O 3 content. However, the thermal conductivity and CTE did not follow the rule of mixture. This is likely due to the partial oxidation of SiCN and the resultant impurity phases such as Y 2 SiO 5 , Y 2 Si 2 O 7 , and Y 4.67 (SiO 4 ) 3 O.

Formation kinetics and thermodynamic stability of the Aurivillius compounds in Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 –BiFeO 3 system

Abstract The Aurivillius compounds in the Bi 2 O 3 –Fe 2 O 3 –TiO 2 system, combining ferroelectric, semiconducting, and ferromagnetic properties, have attracted particular interest. Formation kinetics and thermodynamic stability are the fundamental knowledge needed for modeling and predicting the temporal microstructure and property evolution during materials processing but have not yet been addressed by quantitative experimental measurement. This article focuses on the Bi n +1 Fe n –3 Ti 3 O 3 n +3 Aurivillius compounds on the Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 –BiFeO 3 tie‐line to elucidate the mechanisms and thermodynamic controls responsible for phase formation of compounds with various perovskite‐like layers. Five high‐purity Aurivillius compounds Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 , Bi 5 FeTi 3 O 15 , Bi 6 Fe 2 Ti 3 O 18 , Bi 7 Fe 3 Ti 3 O 21 , and Bi 8 Fe 4 Ti 3 O 24 with integer n = 3–7 values were synthesized and their phase transformation properties and enthalpies of formation were studied by X‐ray diffraction in situ, high temperature differential scanning calorimetry, and high temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry. Thermodynamic stability of the compounds decreases with increasing n , and formation kinetics gradually slow down, demonstrating the inherent difficulty to synthesize pure Aurivillius compounds with n larger than 8. This difficulty was confirmed by an impurity phase coexisting with Bi 9 Fe 5 Ti 3 O 27 .

Model 9975 O Ring Fixture Long-Term Leak Performance (FY2024 Status Report)

Leak testing experiments to monitor the aging performance of Viton ® GLT and GLT-S O-rings used in the model 9975 shipping package have been ongoing since 2004 at Savannah River National Laboratory. Seventy tests using mock-up 9975 primary containment vessels (PCVs) with GLT O-rings were assembled and heated to temperatures ranging from 200 to 450 °F. Due to material substitution, fourteen tests with GLT-S O-rings were initiated in 2008 and heated to temperatures ranging from 200 to 400 °F. The conditioning temperatures are elevated compared to the calculated maximum O-ring temperature in a 9975 package in storage, 158 °F, to accelerate aging and enable observations of O-ring failures in a reasonable time frame. The mock-up PCV fixtures are leak tested periodically, and all GLT O-ring fixtures aging at 350 °F or above have failed to maintain a leak-tight seal. Eight GLT O-ring fixtures aging at 300 °F have failed after 2.8 to 5.7 years at temperature while the remaining fixtures at 300 °F were retired from testing following more than five years of aging without failure. Two of these retired fixtures were returned to testing and heated to 350 °F to evaluate the impact of additional heating at higher temperature for aged O-rings. Fixture #20 failed after 3 months of testing while fixture #18 remained leak tight. These O-rings demonstrated that aged and in-service O-rings can continue to be used, even at higher temperatures, after being in storage, and their leak performance are consistent with other samples at 350 °F.

Suppressed paramagnetism in amorphous Ta 2 O 5 − x oxides and its link to superconducting-qubit performance

Amorphous-oxide layers in thin-film capacitors are linked to reduced transmon-qubit T 1 coherence times. Ta -based capacitors outperform Nb -based ones, suggesting that amorphous Ta 2 O 5 − x is less lossy than Nb 2 O 5 − x . We investigate the microscopic features of these amorphous oxides using ab initio molecular dynamics and density functional theory, revealing the origins of the superior performance of Ta 2 O 5 − x . We establish that oxygen deficiency is less likely to occur in amorphous Ta 2 O 5 − x than in Nb 2 O 5 − x for 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25 and that for a given oxygen deficiency x , metal Ta — Ta bond formation is enhanced. Such bonds, which are accommodated by structural flaws in the amorphous network, capture electrons better than in amorphous Nb 2 O 5 − x . These thermochemical differences quench or highly suppress magnetic moments in amorphous Ta 2 O 5 − x and eliminate a potential source of quasiparticles and magnetic flux noise. We also show that hyperfine couplings between Nb nuclei and local magnetic moments in Nb 2 O 5 − x can form “two-level systems” (TLSs) or “two-level fluctuators” with energy splittings of 100–1000 MHz or higher. This reveals a TLS mechanism in amorphous Nb 2 O 5 − x oxide layers that is likely inactive in Ta 2 O 5 − x . Our work provides a fundamental understanding of the materials chemistry and limitations imposed by native oxides of superconducting qubits that can be used to guide materials selection and processing.

Elucidating facet dependent electronic and electrochemical properties of Cu 2 O nanocrystals using AFM/SCEM and DFT

Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) has extensively been studied owing to its excellent optical, magnetic, and catalytic properties. Many of these properties are facet-dependent and have not been well elucidated. This work synthesized cubic, cuboctahedral, octahedral, and rhombic dodecahedral shaped Cu 2 O nanocrystals of ~300 nm in size to evaluate the facet-dependent electrochemical activities. Here, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were firstly used to reveal the average electrochemical activities at the ensemble level. Atomic force microscopy-scanning electrochemical microscopy (AFM-SECM) was further used to assess the electrochemical activities of different Cu 2 O nanocrystals at the facet level. Hexaammineruthenium (III) chloride ({Ru(NH 3 ) 6 }Cl 3 ) was employed as the probe molecules that reacted with four different Cu 2 O nanocrystals under —400mV and yielded ~300 pA current between the probing tip and the nanocrystal surface. The tip-current mapping results indicate that rhombic dodecahedral Cu 2 O exhibits higher electrocatalytic activity than other shaped Cu 2 O, due to the presence of dominant exposed facet of {110} as indicated by the relatively high tip current. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the facet dependence of local surface energy and electronic structure of Cu 2 O nanocrystals. Besides electrochemical activity, the surface work function and adsorptive properties were both observed to vary with the shape and dominant exposed facets of Cu 2 O. This study presented a unique experimental and computational chemistry approach to analyze surface electrochemical properties of Cu 2 O crystals at a crystalline facet level.

Crystal chemistry and phase equilibria of the CaO-½Ho 2 O 3 -CoO z system at 885 °C in air

Ini this work, the phase equilibrium diagram of the CaO-½Ho 2 O 3 -CoO z system was determined at 885 °C in air. This diagram offers compatibility relationships in the ternary oxide system that are essential for processing and for the understanding of properties of several thermoelectric phases in the system. Four three-phase regions and three solid solution tie-line regions were determined in the CaO-½Ho 2 O 3 -CoO z system. In the CaO-Ho 2 O 3 system, while a small solid solution region was identified for (Ho 1-x Ca x )O (3-z)/2 (0 ≤x ≤ 0.14), Ho was not present in the Ca site of CaO. Neither the reported Ho2CoO4 phase in the Ho 2 O-CoO z system nor the Ca-doped (Ho 1+x Ca1-x)CoO 4-z phase was present at 885 °C. No solid solution of the distorted perovskite, (Ho 1-x Cax)CoO 3-z , was established at this temperature. The CaO-CoO z system consists of two calcium cobaltate thermoelectric compounds. The 2D thermoelectric oxide, (Ca 3-x Ho x )Co 4 O 9-z (0 ≤x ≤ 0.5), has a misfit layered structure, and the 1D Ca 3 Co 2 O 6 consists of chains of alternating CoO 6 trigonal prisms and CoO 6 octahedra. Ca 3 Co 2 O 6 was found to be a stoichiometric compound. A comparison of the phase diagrams of the CaO -½ R 2 O 3 -CoO z (R = La, Nd, Eu, and Ho) systems is given.

Reactive co-sputtering of ternary Au–Ta–O films with tunable electrical resistivity

Heavy-metal-based films with high electrical resistivity are needed for hohlraums for magnetically-assisted inertial confinement fusion. Here, we study ternary Au-Ta-O films deposited by reactive direct-current magnetron co-sputtering from elemental Au and Ta targets in an oxygen containing atmosphere. By varying O content, the electrical resistivity of films can be tuned in a wide range of ~ 100 - 40,000 μΩ cm. With increasing O content, a drastic increase in resistivity occurs at ~ 45 at.% of O, separating regimes with two different dominant conduction mechanisms attributed to metallic conduction through the Au-Ta alloy matrix (for ≲ 45 at.% of O) and tunneling across insulating Ta 2 O 5 layers separating conducting islands (for ≳ 45 at.% of O). Post-deposition annealing at 300 °C leads to the segregation of Au into ~ 50-nm islands, sharply decreasing the resistivity for films with ≳ 45 at.% of O but not for the metal-like films with lower O content.

Experimental electronic structures of the Fe IV =O bond in S=1 heme vs. nonheme sites: Effect of the porphyrin ligand

High-valent Fe IV =O species are common intermediates in biological and artificial catalysts. Heme and nonheme S=1 Fe IV =O sites have been synthesized and studied for decades but little quantitative experimental comparison of their electronic structures has been available, due to the lack of direct methods focused on the iron. This study allows a rigorous determination of the electronic structure of a nonheme Fe IV =O center and its comparison to an Fe IV =O heme site using 1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and Fe L-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Further, variable temperature magnetic circular dichroism (VT-MCD) of the ligand field transitions, combined with nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy of the two S=1 Fe IV =O systems show that the equatorial ligand field decreases from a nonheme to a heme Fe IV =O site. Alternatively, RIXS and Fe L-edge XAS combined with MCD show that the Fe dπ orbitals are unperturbed in the Fe IV =O heme relative to the nonheme site because the strong axial Fe-O bond uncouples the Fe dπ orbitals from the porphyrin π-system. As a consequence, the thermodynamics and kinetics of the H-atom abstraction reactions are actually very similar for heme compound II and nonheme Fe IV =O active sites.

The CGM 2 Survey: Circumgalactic O vι from Dwarf to Massive Star-forming Galaxies

We combine 126 new galaxy-O vι absorber pairs from the CGM 2 survey with 123 pairs drawn from the literature to examine the simultaneous dependence of the column density of O vι absorbers (N O VI ) on galaxy stellar mass, star-formation rate, and impact parameter. The combined sample consists of 249 galaxy-O vι absorber pairs covering z = 0–0.6, with host galaxy stellar masses M * = 10 7.8 –10 11.2 M ⊙ and galaxy-absorber impact parameters R ⊥ = 0–400 proper kiloparsecs. In this work, we focus on the variation of N O VI with galaxy mass and impact parameter among the star-forming galaxies in the sample. We find that the average N O VI within one virial radius of a star-forming galaxy is greatest for star-forming galaxies with M * = 10 9.2 –10 10 M ⊙ . Star-forming galaxies with M * between 10 8 and 10 11.2 M ⊙ can explain most O vι systems with column densities greater than 10 13.5 cm –2 . Sixty percent of the O vι mass associated with a star-forming galaxy is found within one virial radius, and 35% is found between one and two virial radii. In general, we find that some departure from hydrostatic equilibrium in the CGM is necessary to reproduce the observed O vι amount, galaxy mass dependence, and extent. Our measurements serve as a test set for CGM models over a broad range of host galaxy masses.

Unraveling the Atomic Mechanism of the Crystalline Phase‐Dependent Structural Features and Special Spectral Design of α‐, β‐, and Ɛ‐Ga₂O₃

Atomic‐scale phase transformations profoundly influence the functional properties of Ga₂O₃ polymorphs. By combining irradiation experiments with microstructure characterization and theoretical approaches, phase‐specific energy‐dissipation pathways in α‐, β‐, and ε‐Ga₂O₃ are uncovered and strategies for targeted property design are outlined. Competing antiphase boundaries (APBs) and twin domain boundaries (TDBs) promote irreversible α→ε interconversion through domain fragmentation. In β‐Ga₂O₃, defect‐induced stress gradients drive two distinct local transformations: surface Ga‐aggregated β→δ that stabilizes transient states, and latent‐track‐confined β→κ phase transition with recoverable distortions via cation reordering. Under electronic excitation, β‐Ga₂O₃ forms nanohillocks via robust GaO₆ octahedra (high density/strong Ga─O bonds), while α/ε‐Ga₂O₃ generates nanopores from tetrahedral Ga looseness (low bonding energy), highlighting phase‐dependent surface dynamics shaped by atomic packing and bonding anisotropy. Defect‐regulated recombination suppresses visible photoluminescence in α/β‐Ga₂O₃, whereas in ε‐Ga₂O₃ bandgap narrowing of ΔE: 0.30 eV is observed, enhancing emission. Linking phase‐dependent defect‐carrier interactions and metastable‐phase engineering in Ga₂O₃ enables property optimization for power‐electronics and optoelectronics devices.

Anthraquinone Redox Relay for Dye‐Sensitized Photo‐electrochemical H 2 O 2 Production

Abstract Anthraquinone (AQ) redox mediators are introduced to metal‐free organic dye sensitized photo‐electrochemical cells (DSPECs) for the generation of H 2 O 2 . Instead of directly reducing O 2 to produce H 2 O 2 , visible‐light‐driven AQ reduction occurs in the DSPEC and the following autooxidation with O 2 allows H 2 O 2 accumulation and AQ regeneration. In an aqueous electrolyte, under 1 sun conditions, a water‐soluble AQ salt is employed with the highest photocurrent of up to 0.4 mA cm −2 and near‐quantitative faradaic efficiency for producing H 2 O 2 . In a non‐aqueous electrolyte, under 1 sun illumination, an organic‐soluble AQ is applied and the photocurrent reaches 1.8 mA cm −2 with faradaic efficiency up to 95 % for H 2 O 2 production. This AQ‐relay DSPEC exhibits the highest photocurrent so far in non‐aqueous electrolytes for H 2 O 2 production and excellent acid stability in aqueous electrolytes, thus providing a practical and efficient strategy for visible‐light‐driven H 2 O 2 production.

Quantification of High‐Temperature Transition Al 2 O 3 and Their Phase Transformations**

Abstract High‐temperature treatment of γ‐Al 2 O 3 can lead to a series of polymorphic transformations, including the formation of δ‐Al 2 O 3 and θ‐Al 2 O 3 . Quantification of the microstructure in the range where δ‐ and θ‐Al 2 O 3 are formed represents a formidable challenge, as both phases accommodate a high degree of structural disorder. In this work, we explore the use of an XRD recursive‐stacking formalism for the quantification of high‐temperature transition aluminas. We formulate the recursive‐stacking methodology for modelling of disorder in δ‐Al 2 O 3 and twinning in θ‐Al 2 O 3 and show that explicitly accounting for the disorder is necessary to reliably model the XRD patterns of high‐temperature transition alumina. We also use the recursive stacking approach to study phase transformation during high‐temperature (1050 °C) treatment. We show that the two different intergrowth modes of δ‐Al 2 O 3 have different transformation characteristics and that a significant portion of δ‐Al 2 O 3 is stabilized with θ‐Al 2 O 3 even after prolonged high‐temperature exposures.

Quantification of High-Temperature Transition Al2O3 and Their Phase Transformations

High temperature exposure of ?-Al2O3 can lead to a series of polymorphic transformations, including the formation of ?-Al2O3 and ?-Al2O3. Quantification of the microstructure in the ?/?-Al2O3 formation range represents a formidable challenge as both phases accommodate a high degree of structural disorder. In this work, we explore the use of XRD recursive stacking formalism for quantification of high temperature transition aluminas. We formulate the recursive stacking methodology for modelling of disorder in ?-Al2O3 and twinning in ?-Al2O3 and show that explicitly accounting for the disorder is necessary to reliably model the XRD patterns of high temperature transition alumina. In the second part, we use the recursive stacking approach to study phase transformation during high temperature (1050 ºC) treatment. We show that the two different intergrowth modes of ?-Al2O3 have different transformation characteristics, and that a significant portion of ?-Al2O3 is stabilized with ?-Al2O3 even after prolonged high-temperature exposures.
