Multimodal nonlinear optical imaging via evanescent wave excitation

A system for multimodal nonlinear optical imaging is provided. Each mode uses a high NA objective to cause total internal reflection excitation at a sample-substrate interface. The system has a femtosecond oscillator to generate pulses used for two beams. The objective receives at least one beam, redirects the received at least one beam through a dielectric substrate to cause the TIR and produces corresponding evanescent waves in a portion of the sample adjacent to the sample-substrate interface, and collects a backward-propagating beam of pulses of responsive light. The portion of the sample illuminated by the evanescent waves emits responsive light. Different modes or combinations of the distinct modalities may be selected to access complementary chemical and structural information for various chemical species near the sample-substrate interface. Each mode may have mode-specific control such as selective beam blocking, power ratios and filtering.

Nonlinear propagation of a wave packet in a two-dimensional acoustically lined duct

The method of multiple scales is used to analyze the nonlinear effects of the gas motion and the acoustic lining material on the propagation and attenuation of a wave packet in a two-dimensional duct of uniform cross section. The partial differential equations describing the space and time variation of amplitudes and phases are obtained and used to show that both the monochromatic waves and the pure amplitude modulated waves are stable. The spatial attenuation of the pure amplitude modulated waves is found to be lower than that of monochromatic waves, while the temporal attenuation of the former waves has a minimum value near the resonant frequency. The nonlinearity shifts the wavenumber and frequency to higher values without changing phase speed for the pure phase modulated waves.

Alfven wave resonances and flow induced by non-linear Alfven waves in a stratified atmosphere

A nonlinear, time-dependent, ideal MHD code has been developed and used to compute the flow induced by nonlinear Alfven waves propagating in an isothermal, stratified, plane-parallel atmosphere. The code is based on characteristic equations solved in a Lagrangian frame and is highly accurate. Results show that resonance behavior of Alfven waves exists in the presence of a continuous density gradient and that the waves with periods corresponding to resonant peaks exert considerably more force on the medium than off-resonance periods; this leads to enhanced flow. If only off-peak periods are considered, the relationship between the wave period and induced longitudinal velocity shows that short period WKB waves push more on the background medium than longer period, non-WKB, waves. The results also show the development of the longitudinal waves produced by the finite amplitude of the Alfven waves. The longitudinal wave becomes strong as the Alfven wave relative amplitude grows above 10 percent and will lead to strong damping of the Alfven waves.

Nonlinear evolution of interacting oblique waves on two-dimensional shear layers

The effects of critical layer nonlinearity are considered on spatially growing oblique instability waves on nominally two-dimensional shear layers between parallel streams. The analysis shows that three-dimensional effects cause nonlinearity to occur at much smaller amplitudes than it does in two-dimensional flows. The nonlinear instability wave amplitude is determined by an integro-differential equation with cubic type nonlinearity. The numerical solutions to this equation are worked out and discussed in some detail. The numerical solutions always end in a singularity at a finite downstream distance.

Nonlinear Evolution of Alfvenic Wave Packets

Alfven waves are a ubiquitous feature of the solar wind. One approach to studying the evolution of such waves has been to study exact solutions to approximate evolution equations. Here we compare soliton solutions of the Derivative Nonlinear Schrodinger evolution equation (DNLS) to solutions of the compressible MHD equations.

Nonlinear propagation of electromagnetic waves in a plasma containing random irregularities.

The problem of propagation of finite-amplitude electromagnetic waves in a plasma containing random irregularities is studied. Using a recently developed perturbation technique, a general equation for finite amplitude coherent waves is derived. Included in this equation are both the effects of quasi-harmonic nonlinear heating of electrons and random scattering by irregularities. The equation is solved in general by the equivalent linearization procedure. The amplitude of the coherent wave is found to be attenuated by collision and scattering. Both attenuation are affected by the nonlinear heating of the electrons. Curves showing the results for a specific example will be presented.

Nonlinear propagation of a wave packet in a hard-walled circular duct

The method of multiple scales is used to derive a nonlinear Schroedinger equation for the temporal and spatial modulation of the amplitudes and the phases of waves propagating in a hard-walled circular duct. This equation is used to show that monochromatic waves are stable and to determine the amplitude dependance of the cutoff frequencies.

The Numerical Studies Program for the Atmospheric General Circulation Experiment (AGCE) for Spacelab Flights

The atmospheric general circulation experiment (AGCE) numerical design for Spacelab flights was studied. A spherical baroclinic flow experiment which models the large scale circulations of the Earth's atmosphere was proposed. Gravity is simulated by a radial dielectric body force. The major objective of the AGCE is to study nonlinear baroclinic wave flows in spherical geometry. Numerical models must be developed which accurately predict the basic axisymmetric states and the stability of nonlinear baroclinic wave flows. A three dimensional, fully nonlinear, numerical model and the AGCE based on the complete set of equations is required. Progress in the AGCE numerical design studies program is reported.

Verification of theory on weak turbulence relating to the sequence of diffuse plasma resonances in space.

An interpretation of the sequence of diffuse plasma resonances observed by space probes (Alouette 2 and ISIS-1 satellites) is developed in terms of wave-particle nonlinear interaction in a weakly turbulent plasma including the electrostatic electron cyclotron harmonic wave instability. The longest time duration of the center frequency of the diffuse plasma resonance is found to coincide with the most favorable condition for the electrostatic electron cyclotron harmonic wave instability which is obtained by solving the dispersion equation obtained for a linear approximation of the kinetic wave equation for the warm magnetoactive plasma. The electrostatic field due to the transmission of the intense rf pulse produces plasma turbulence involving nonlinear wave-wave interaction and temperature anisotropy which leads to instability. This instability supplies energy to the turbulence. The process can be thought of as a feedback system.

Nonlinear evolution of slow waves in the solar wind

It is shown by numerical simulation using a hybrid code that comparison of the nonlinear steepening rate, calculated from fluid theory, with the linear collisionless damping rate defines reasonably well the parameters for which fast and slow MHD waves should steepen. The results indicate that, whereas fast modes should ordinarly steepen, steepened slow waves should occur rarely in the solar wind near 1 AU.

Nonlinear dynamics of small-scale Alfvén waves

Herein we study the nonlinear evolution of very oblique small-scale Alfvén waves with k ⊥ d i ≳1. At these scales, the waves become significantly compressive, unlike in magnetohydrodynamics, due to the Hall term in the equations. We demonstrate that when frequencies are small compared to the ion gyrofrequency and amplitudes are small compared to unity, no new nonlinear interaction appears due to the Hall term alone at the lowest non-trivial order, even when k ⊥ d i ~1. However, at the second non-trivial order, we discover that the Hall physics leads to a slow but resonant nonlinear interaction between co-propagating Alfvén waves, an inherently three-dimensional effect. Including the effects of finite temperature, finite frequency, and electron inertia, the two-fluid Alfvén wave also becomes dispersive once one or more of k ⊥ ρ s , k ⊥ d e , or k ∥ d i becomes significant: for oblique waves at low β as studied here, this can be at a much smaller scale than d i . We show that the timescale for one-dimensional steepening of two-fluid Alfvén waves is only significant at these smaller dispersive scales, and also derive an expression for the amplitude of driven harmonics of a primary wave. Importantly, both new effects are absent in gyrokinetics and other commonly used reduced two-fluid models. Our calculations have relevance for the interpretation of laboratory Alfvén wave experiments, as well as shedding light on the physics of turbulence in the solar corona and inner solar wind, where the dominant nonlinear interaction between counter-propagating waves is suppressed, allowing these new effects to become important.

Exact finite difference schemes for the non-linear unidirectional wave equation

Attention is given to the construction of exact finite difference schemes for the nonlinear unidirectional wave equation that describes the nonlinear propagation of a wave motion in the positive x-direction. The schemes constructed for these equations are compared with those obtained by using the usual procedures of numerical analysis. It is noted that the order of the exact finite difference models is equal to the order of the differential equation.

Planning for coordinated space and ground-based ionospheric modification experiments

The planning and conduction of coordinated space and ground-based ionospheric modification experiments are discussed. The purpose of these experiments is to discuss: (1) the nonlinear VLF wave interaction with the ionospheric plasmas; and (2) the nonlinear propagation of VLF waves in the HF-modified ionosphere. It is expected that the HF-induced ionospheric density striations can render the nonlinear mode conversion of VLF waved into lower hybrid waves. Lower hybrid waves can also be excited parametrically by the VLF waves in the absence of the density striations if the VLF waves are intense enough. Laboratory experiments are planned for crosschecking the results obtained from the field experiments.

Undamped plasma waves

This paper describes small-amplitude nonlinear plasma wave solutions to the one-dimensional Vlasov-Maxwell equations. A sufficient condition for waves of a given phase velocity to exist arbitrarily close to a given spatially uniform Vlasov equilibrium is developed, and sufficient analytical information for the construction of approximate expressions for the electric potential and distribution functions is derived, with exact knowledge of the asymptotic behavior of the error terms. These results have a very surprising physical implication: the Landau damping of small-amplitude waves is not inevitable. Instead, there exist plasma waves that trap particles even at arbitrarily small amplitude and do not damp.

Low-level VLF and LR radio emissions observed at earth and Jupiter

Major observational features of magnetospheric VLF-LF radio noise that have been uncovered by the IMP, Hawkeye and ISEE satellites, are examined with emphasis on the capabilities of the noise to diagnose local and remote plasma parameters. The relationship of the radiation to not less than 1-mV/m electrostatic upper hybrid emissions is assessed, and indirect observational evidence suggests that upper noise is associated with the generation of the VLF-LF radiation. Theoretical luminosities of mechanisms including synchrotron radiation, linear mode conversion of upper hybrid waves and nonlinear scattering of upper hybrid waves off plasma density irregularities are estimated, and the wave-wave scattering hypothesis is considered to be a viable mechanism if the presence of low-frequency waves as a scattering agent can be established.
