Development of components for submillimeter wave heterodyne radiometers at JPL

Components for the key elements of submillimeter wave heterodyne receivers are described. The devices and components are inherently space qualifiable having low power and mass needs and exhibiting robustness. Nb and NbN superconductor insulator superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions are selected for the nonlinear mixing element because of their robustness. NbN exhibits a large superconducting bandgap, allowing operation in excess of 1500 GHz. Both waveguide mounts, for the lower frequencies and planar antenna mixer mounts for the higher frequency range, are used. Quasi-optical components are used for frequency multiplexing and combining.

Characterization of hydrogen interactions with the surface of alpha-2 titanium aluminide alloys

The interaction of hydrogen at the surface of alpha-2 titanium aluminide alloys with Nb additions has been investigated with Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and reflected electron energy loss (REELS) spectroscopy. The hydrogen was either adsorbed onto the alloy surface from the gas phase or it was pre-charged into the alloy forming an alpha-2 hydride. No effect of either adsorbed or absorbed hydrogen was observed in the Auger spectra. A shift in the bulk plasmon loss energy (observed with REELS) was measured for both conditions. The potential significance of these results in relation to hydrogen interactions in this alloy is discussed.

YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)/Au/Nb sandwich geometry SNS weak links on c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)

Sandwich geometry superconductor/normal metal/superconductor structures have been fabricated on LaAlO3 and cubic zirconia with laser-ablated, c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) base electrodes, 100-600 A of Au, and Nb counter electrodes, all formed in situ without breaking vacuum. Junctions range in size from 5 to 50 micron on a side. Four probe I-V measurements at 4.2 K show RnA products as low as 6 x 10 to the -9th sq cm and critical current densities up to 5.2 kA/sq cm. AC Josephson steps were observed with the application of 10-GHz radiation. The temperature dependence of Jc and the observation of the AC Josephson effect suggest that true supercurrents are present and that they do indeed represent the characteristics of the YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)/Au/Nb structure. The best results were obtained when the devices were annealed at about 450 C in O2 for 30 min after Au deposition.

Containerless processing using electromagnetic levitation

The theory and practice of containerless processing via electromagnetic (EM) levitation is reviewed briefly. The use of EM levitation for the processing of alloys is described with particular emphasis on the bulk melt supercooling phenomenon in a containerless environment. The various effects associated with rapid solidification via bulk melt supercooling are discussed with examples of Nb-Si alloys. It is suggested that a detailed analysis of such effects can be utilized to select the potentially most promising alloys for future space-based processing.

Fassaite composition trends during crystallization of Allende Type B refractory inclusion melts

Major-, minor-, and trace-element zoning trends in fassaite from Type B1 and B2 inclusions from the Allende meteorite are defined by using electron and ion microprobe data. Fassaite/liquid distribution coefficients are calculated for many of the lithophile elements, and evidence for and against the presence of relict fassaite in these inclusions is discussed. Major-element zoning in fassaite in Type B CAIs is found from Ti-, V-, Sc-rich cores to relatively Mg-, Si-rich rims. Trace elements that are incompatible in this fassaite are Nb (effective fassaite/liquid distribution = 0.29), Y(0.52), Ta(0.34), Th(0.053), U(0.4), and rare earth elements (0.31-0.48), while compatible trace elements are Zr(1.1) and Hf(1.5). Rare-earth-elements (RRE) abundances in fassaite are found to be controlled by crystal/liquid fractionation. Candidates for relict fassaite grains are discovered: Ti-, Sc-rich, REE-poor crystals enclosed in melilite in the mantle of TS34.

Glass precursor approach to high-temperature superconductors

The available studies on the synthesis of high T sub c superconductors (HTS) via the glass precursor approach were reviewed. Melts of the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system as well as those doped with oxides of some other elements (Pb, Al, V, Te, Nb, etc.) could be quenched into glasses which, on further heat treatments under appropriate conditions, crystallized into the superconducting phase(s). The nature of the HTS phase(s) formed depends on the annealing temperature, time, atmosphere, and the cooling rate and also on the glass composition. Long term annealing was needed to obtain a large fraction of the 110 K phase. The high T sub c phase did not crystallize out directly from the glass matrix, but was preceded by the precipitation of other phases. The 110 K HTS was produced at high temperatures by reaction between the phases formed at lower temperatures resulting in multiphase material. The presence of a glass former such as B2O3 was necessary for the Y-Ba-Cu-O melt to form a glass on fast cooling. A discontinuous YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) HTS phase crystallized out on heat treatment of this glass. Attempts to prepare Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O system in the glassy state were not successful.

Effect of doping in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductor

The results of the effect of doping on the superconducting transition in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system are reported. Samples were prepared under identical conditions with varying types (Pb, Sb, Sn, Nb) and amounts of dopants. All samples consisted of multiple phases, and showed stable and reproducible superconducting transitions. Stabilization of the well known 110 K phase depends on both the type and amount of dopant. No trace of superconducting phase of 150 K and above was observed.

Oxidation characteristics of Beta-21S in air in the temperature range 600 to 800 C

The metastable beta-Ti alloy Beta-21S, Ti-15Mo-2.7Nb-3Al-0.2Si (weight percent), has been proposed as a candidate for use in metal matrix composites in future hypersonic vehicles. The present study investigated the oxidation behavior of Beta-21S over the temperature range 600 C to 800 C. Oxidation weight gain was evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis. Oxidized specimens were evaluated using x ray diffraction techniques, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x ray analysis, and electron microprobe analysis to identify oxidation products and evaluate oxidation damage to the alloy.

The cyclic oxidation resistance at 1200 C of beta-NiAl, FeAl, and CoAl alloys with selected third element additions

The intermetallic compounds Beta-NiAl, FeAl, and CoAl were tested in cyclic oxidation with selected third element alloy additions. Tests in static air for 200 1-hr cycles at 1200 C indicated by specific weight change/time data and x-ray diffraction analysis that the 5 at percent alloy additions did not significantly improve the oxidation resistance over the alumina forming baseline alloys without the additions. Many of the alloy additions were actually deleterious. Ta and Nb were the only alloy additions that actually altered the nature of the oxide(s) formed and still maintained the oxidation resistance of the protective alumina scale.

Mechanical properties of coated titanium Beta-21S after exposure to air at 700 and 800 C

Mechanical properties of Beta-21S (Ti-15Mo-3Al-2.7Nb-0.2Si, wt percent) with glass, aluminide, and glass-on-aluminide coatings less than 3-micron thick were studied. Coatings were deposited by sol-gel processing or electron-beam evaporation onto 4.5-mil (113-micron) thick Beta-21S sheet from which, after oxidizing in air at 700 or 800 C, tensile test specimens were machined. Plastic elongation was the most severely degraded of the tensile properties; the glass-on-aluminide coatings were the most effective in preventing degradation. It was found that oxygen trapping by forming oxides in the coating, and reactions between the coatings and the Beta-21S alloy played significant roles.

Oxidation characteristics of Ti-25Al-10Nb-3V-1Mo

Static oxidation kinetics of the super-alpha 2 titanium-aluminide alloy Ti-25Al-10Nb-3V-1Mo (at. percent) were investigated in air over the temperature range of 650 to 1000 C using thermogravimetric analysis. The oxidation kinetics were complex at all exposure temperatures and displayed up to three distinct oxidation rates. Breakaway oxidation occurred after long exposure times at high temperatures. Oxidation products were determined using X-ray diffraction techniques, electron microprobe analysis, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Oxide scale morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy of the surfaces and cross sections of oxidized specimens. The oxides during the parabolic stages were compact and multilayered, consisting primarily of TiO2 doped with Nb, a top layer of Al2O3, and a thin bottom layer of TiN. The transition between the second and third parabolic stage was found to be linked to the formation of a TiAl layer at the oxide-metal interface. Porosity was formed during the third stage, causing degradation of the oxide and the beginning of breakaway oxidation.

Metal- and intermetallic-matrix composites for aerospace propulsion and power systems

The requirements for high specific strength refractory materials of prospective military, civil, and space propulsion systems are presently addressed in the context of emerging capabilities in metal- and intermetallic-matrix composites. The candidate systems encompass composite matrix compositions of superalloy, Nb-Zr refractory alloy, Cu-base, and Ti-base alloy types, as well as such intermetallics as TiAl, Ti3Al, NiAl, and MoSi2. The brittleness of intermetallic matrices remains a major consideration, as does their general difficulty of fabrication.

Influence of Processing on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of a NbAl3-Base Alloy

Induction melting and rapid solidification processing, followed by grinding to 75-micron powder and P/M consolidation, have been used to produce a multiphase, NbAl3-based, oxidation-resistant alloy of Nb-67Al-7Cr-0.5Y-0.25W composition whose strength and ductility are significantly higher than those of the induction-melted alloy at test temperatures of up to 1200 K. Attention is given to the beneficial role of microstructural refinement; the major second phase, AlNbCr, improves both oxidation resistance and mechanical properties.
