First-principles calculation of Hubbard U for Terbium metal under high pressure

Abstract Using density functional theory (DFT) and linear response approaches, we compute the on-site Hubbard interaction U of elemental Terbium (Tb) metal in the pressure range ∼ 0–65 GPa. The resulting first-principles U values with experimental crystal structures enable us to examine the magnetic properties of Tb using a DFT+U method. The lowest-energy magnetic states in our calculations for different high-pressure Tb phases—including hcp, α -Sm, and dhcp—are found to be compatible with the corresponding magnetic ordering vectors reported in experiments. The result shows that the inclusion of Hubbard U substantially improves the accuracy and efficiency in modeling correlated rare-earth materials. Our study also provides the necessary U information for other quantum many-body techniques to study Tb under extreme pressure conditions.

Observation of Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect and Exchange Interaction in Topological Insulator/Antiferromagnet Heterostructure

Integration of a quantum anomalous Hall insulator with a magnetically ordered material provides an additional degree of freedom through which the resulting exotic quantum states can be controlled. Here, an experimental observation is reported of the quantum anomalous Hall e?ect in a magnet-ically-doped topological insulator grown on the antiferromagnetic insulator Cr?O?. The exchange coupling between the two materials is investigated using ?eld-cooling-dependent magnetometry and polarized neutron re?ec-tometry. Both techniques reveal strong interfacial interaction between the antiferromagnetic order of the Cr?O? and the magnetic topological insulator, manifested as an exchange bias when the sample is ?eld-cooled under an out-of-plane magnetic ?eld, and an exchange spring-like magnetic depth pro?le when the system is magnetized within the ?lm plane. These results identify antiferromagnetic insulators as suitable candidates for the manipula-tion of magnetic and topological order in topological insulator ?lms.

Hybridized quadrupolar excitations in the spin-anisotropic frustrated magnet FeI 2

Magnetic order is usually associated with well-defined magnon excitations. Exotic magnetic fluctuations with fractional, topological or multipolar character, have been proposed for radically different forms of magnetic matter such as spin-liquids. As a result, considerable efforts have searched for, and uncovered, low-spin materials with suppressed dipolar order at low temperatures. In this work, we report neutron-scattering experiments and quantitative theoretical modeling of an exceptional spin-1 system – the uniaxial triangular magnet FeI 2 – where a bright and dispersive band of mixed dipolarquadrupolar fluctuations emerges just above a dipolar ordered ground-state. This excitation arises from anisotropic exchange interactions that hybridize overlapping modes carrying fundamentally different quantum numbers. Remarkably, a generalization of spin-wave theory to local SU(3) degrees of freedom accounts for all details of the low-energy dynamical response of FeI 2 without going beyond quadratic order. Our work highlights that quantum excitations without classical counterparts can be realized even in presence of fully developed magnetic order.

Incommensurate Spin Fluctuations in the Spin-Triplet Superconductor Candidate UTe 2

Spin-triplet superconductors are of extensive current interest because they can host topological state and Majorana fermions important for quantum computation. The uranium-based heavy-fermion superconductor UTe 2 has been argued as a spin-triplet superconductor similar to UGe2, URhGe, and UCoGe, where the superconducting phase is near (or coexists with) a ferromagnetic (FM) instability and spin-triplet electron pairing is driven by FM spin fluctuations. Here we use neutron scattering to show that, although UTe 2 exhibits no static magnetic order down to 0.3 K, its magnetism in the [0,K,L] plane is dominated by incommensurate spin fluctuations near an antiferromagnetic ordering wave vector and extends to at least 2.6 meV. We are able to understand the dominant incommensurate spin fluctuations of UTe 2 in terms of its electronic structure calculated using a combined density-functional and dynamic mean-field theory.

Magnetic terahertz resonances above the Néel temperature in the frustrated kagome antiferromagnet averievite

Time-domain magneto-THz spectroscopy is utilized to study the frustrated magnet averievite Cu 5–x Zn x V 2 O 10 (CsCl). Pronounced THz resonances are observed in unsubstituted samples (x = 0) when cooling below the onset of short-range magnetic correlations. The influence of external magnetic effects confirms the magnetic origin of these resonances. Increasing Zn substitution suppresses the resonances, as frustration effects dominate, reflecting the nonmagnetic phases for x > 0.25 compounds. The temperature evolution of the THz spectra is complemented with electron spin resonance spectroscopy. This comparison allows a direct probe of the different contributions from magnetic order, frustration, and structural properties in the phase diagram of averievite. Furthermore, our results illustrate the effect of magnetic interactions in THz spectra of frustrated magnets.

EuAuSb: An odd-parity helical variation of altermagnetism

EuAuSb is a triangular-lattice Dirac semimetal in which a topological Hall effect has been observed to develop in association with a magnetically ordered phase. Our single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements have identified an incommensurate helical order in which individual ferromagnetic Eu 2+ layers rotate in-plane by ∼ 120° from one layer to the next. An in-plane magnetic field distorts the incommensurate order, eventually leading to a first order transition to a state that is approximately commensurate and that is continuously polarized as the bulk magnetization approaches saturation. From an analysis of the magnetic diffraction intensities versus field, we find evidence for a dip in the ordered in-plane moment at the same field where the topological Hall effect is a maximum, and we propose that this is due to field-induced quantum spin fluctuations. Our electronic structure calculations yield exchange constants compatible with the helical order and show that the bands near the Fermi level lose their spin degeneracy via a mechanism similar to that in the collinear altermagnets. In conclusion, we find that, unlike the even symmetry seen in the altermagnets, the spin splitting in EuAuSb has odd-wave symmetry similar to that recently found in a number of coplanar magnetic materials.

Scale-Enhanced Magnetism in Exfoliated Atomically Thin Magnetite Sheets

The discovery of ferromagnetism in atomically thin layers at room temperature widens the prospects of 2D materials for device applications. Recently, two independent experiments demonstrated magnetic ordering in two dissimilar 2D systems, CrI 3 and Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 , at low temperatures and in VSe 2 at room temperature, but observation of intrinsic room-temperature magnetism in 2D materials is still a challenge. Here a transition at room temperature that increases the magnetization in magnetite while thinning down the bulk material to a few atom-thick sheets is reported. DC magnetization measurements prove ferrimagnetic ordering with increased magnetization and density functional theory calculations ascribe their origin to the low dimensionality of the magnetite layers. Additionally, surface energy calculations for different cleavage planes in passivated magnetite crystal agree with the experimental observations of obtaining 2D sheets from non-van der Waals crystals.

Search for octupolar order in NpO 2 by neutron powder diffraction

The magnetic structure of neptunium dioxide (NpO 2 ) remains a mystery despite decades of research. We revisited the search for magnetic ordering in NpO 2 by performing a powder neutron diffraction experiment at low temperatures and relatively large values of Q. Diffraction data were collected for 300 MK, 15 K, and 35 K to understand the phase transition near 25 K. However, no significant changes in the neutron diffraction pattern were identified. Using the octupolar magnetic form factor j 6 , the maximum theoretical expected value of the magnetic moment (3.27 μ B ), the calculated magnetic Bragg peak intensities would not be observable in neutron powder diffraction data. This value is much larger than the previously estimated magnetic moment of ~0.1 μ B . In conclusion, supported by experimental results, these calculations suggest that unpolarized neutron powder diffraction is unsuitable for measuring octupolar ordering in NpO 2 .

Dynamic fingerprint of fractionalized excitations in single-crystalline Cu3Zn(OH)6FBr

Abstract Beyond the absence of long-range magnetic orders, the most prominent feature of the elusive quantum spin liquid (QSL) state is the existence of fractionalized spin excitations, i.e., spinons. When the system orders, the spin-wave excitation appears as the bound state of the spinon-antispinon pair. Although scarcely reported, a direct comparison between similar compounds illustrates the evolution from spinon to magnon. Here, we perform the Raman scattering on single crystals of two quantum kagome antiferromagnets, of which one is the kagome QSL candidate Cu 3 Zn(OH) 6 FBr, and another is an antiferromagnetically ordered compound EuCu 3 (OH) 6 Cl 3 . In Cu 3 Zn(OH) 6 FBr, we identify a unique one spinon-antispinon pair component in the E 2g magnetic Raman continuum, providing strong evidence for deconfined spinon excitations. In contrast, a sharp magnon peak emerges from the one-pair spinon continuum in the E g magnetic Raman response once EuCu 3 (OH) 6 Cl 3 undergoes the antiferromagnetic order transition. From the comparative Raman studies, we can regard the magnon mode as the spinon-antispinon bound state, and the spinon confinement drives the magnetic ordering.

New insight into tuning magnetic phases of RMn6Sn6 kagome metals

Abstract Predicting magnetic ordering in kagome compounds offers the possibility of harnessing topological or flat-band physical properties through tuning of the magnetism. Here, we examine the magnetic interactions and phases of ErMn 6 Sn 6 which belongs to a family of R Mn 6 Sn 6 , R = Sc, Y, Gd–Lu, compounds with magnetic kagome Mn layers, triangular R layers, and signatures of topological properties. Using results from single-crystal neutron diffraction and mean-field analysis, we find that ErMn 6 Sn 6 sits close to the critical boundary separating the spiral-magnetic and ferrimagnetic ordered states typical for non-magnetic versus magnetic R layers, respectively. Finding interlayer magnetic interactions and easy-plane Mn magnetic anisotropy consistent with other members of the family, we predict the existence of a number of temperature and field dependent collinear, noncollinear, and noncoplanar magnetic phases. We show that thermal fluctuations of the Er magnetic moment, which act to weaken the Mn-Er interlayer magnetic interaction and quench the Er magnetic anisotropy, dictate magnetic phase stability. Our results provide a starting point and outline a multitude of possibilities for studying the behavior of Dirac fermions in R Mn 6 Sn 6 compounds with control of the Mn spin orientation and real-space spin chirality.

Influence of the Cubic Sublattice on Magnetic Coupling between the Tetrahedral Sites of Garnet

Here, we present a study on the nuclear and magnetic structures of two iron-based garnets with magnetic cations isolated on tetrahedral sites. Ca 2 YZr 2 Fe 3 O 12 and Ca 2 LaZr 2 Fe 3 O 12 offer an interesting comparison for examining the effect of increasing cation size within the diamagnetic backbone of the garnet crystal structure, and how such changes affect the magnetic order. Despite both systems exhibiting well-pronounced magnetic transitions at low temperatures, we also find evidence for diffuse magnetic scattering due to a competition between the nearest-neighbor, next nearest-neighbor, and so on, within the tetrahedral sites. This competition results in a complex noncollinear magnetic structure on the tetrahedral sublattice creating a mixture of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions above the long-range ordering temperature near 20 K and suggests that the cubic site of the garnet plays a significant role in mediating the superexchange interactions between tetrahedral cations.

Local spin structure in the layered van der Waals materials MnPS 𝑥 ⁢Se 3−𝑥

Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, whether in bulk form or reduced to just a single layer, have potential applications in spintronics and capacity for advanced quantum phenomena. A prerequisite for harnessing these opportunities lies in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the spin behavior in 2D materials. The low dimensionality motivates an understanding of the spin correlations over a wide length scale, from local to long-range order. In this context, we focus on the magnetism in bulk MnPSe 3 and MnPS 3 , 2D layered van der Waals antiferromagnetic semiconductors. These materials have similar honeycomb Mn layers and magnetic ordering temperatures, but distinct spin orientations and exchange interactions. Here, we utilize neutron scattering to gain deeper insights into the local magnetic structures and spin correlations in the paramagnetic and ordered phases by systematically investigating a MnPS 𝑥 ⁢Se 3−𝑥 (𝑥 = 0, 1, 1.5, 2, 3) series of powder samples using total neutron scattering measurements. By employing magnetic pair distribution function analysis, we unraveled the short-range magnetic correlations in these materials and explored how the nonmagnetic anion S/Se mixing impacts the magnetic correlations. The results reveal that the magnetism can be gradually tuned through alteration of the nonmagnetic S/Se content, which tunes the atomic structure. The change in magnetic structure is also accompanied by a control of the magnetic correlation length within the 2D honeycomb layers. Complimentary inelastic neutron scattering measurements allowed a quantification of the change in the magnetic exchange interactions for the series and further highlighted the gradual evolution of spin interactions in the series MnPS 𝑥 ⁢Se 3−𝑥 .

Unconventional pressure-induced magnetic transitions and mechanical properties in non-magnetic LaFeSi

Here, this work demonstrates that two consecutive magnetic transitions occur in non-magnetic LaFeSi compound under negative hydrostatic pressure (small volume expansion). Electronic structure properties of LaFeSi were calculated using density functional theory (DFT) to understand the origin of these magnetic transitions. Mechanical properties of LaFeSi, especially elastic properties (shear and Young’s modulus, and Poisson’s ratio), were determined by DFT distortion calculations to elucidate lattice anisotropy and stability. The antiferromagnetic transition at –7.52 GPa, predicted in our work for LaFeSi, is consistent with the reported experimentally observed antiferromagnetic ground states in CeMnSi and LaMnSi compounds having similar crystal geometry. This finding of unexpected magnetic ordering predicts that layered non-magnetic materials, like LaFeSi, may become magnetically active with lattice expansion.

Spin excitations and dynamics in 2D magnets: An overview of magnons and magnetic skyrmions

van der Waals magnetic materials open up exciting possibilities to investigate fundamental spin properties in low-dimensional systems and to build compact functional spintronic structures. This review focuses on the recent progress in two-dimensional (2D) magnets that explore beyond the homogenous magnetically ordered state, including magnons (spin waves), magnetic skyrmions, and complex magnetic domains. Properties of these spin and topology excitations in 2D magnets provide insights into spin-orbit interactions and other forms of coupling between electrons, phonons, and spin-dependent excitations. Such spin-based quasiparticles can also serve as information carriers for next-generation high-speed computing elements. Furthermore, we will first lay out the general theoretical basis of dynamical responses in magnetic systems, followed by detailed descriptions of experimental progress in magnons and spin textures (including magnetic domains and skyrmions). Discussion on the experimental techniques and future perspectives are also included.

Unconventional bipartite entanglement in the quantum dimer magnet Yb2Be 2 SiO 7

The quantum dimer magnet, with antiferromagnetic intradimer and interdimer Heisenberg exchange between spin-1/2 moments, is known to host an (|$\uparrow$$\downarrow$$\rangle$ - |$\downarrow$$\uparrow$$\rangle$)/$\sqrt{2}$ singlet ground state when the intradimer exchange is dominant. Rare-earth-based quantum dimer systems with strong spin-orbit coupling offer the opportunity for tuning their magnetic properties by using magnetic anisotropy as a control knob. Here, we present bulk characterization and neutron scattering measurements of the quantum dimer magnet Yb 2 Be 2 SiO 7 . We find that the Yb3+ ions can be described by an effective spin-1/2 model at low temperatures and the system does not show signs of magnetic order down to 50 mK. The magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron spectroscopy data can be well-described by an isolated dimer model with highly anisotropic exchange that stabilizes a singlet ground state with a wavefunction (|$\uparrow$$\uparrow$$\rangle$ - |$\downarrow$$\downarrow$$\rangle$)/$\sqrt{2}$ or (|$\uparrow$$\uparrow$$\rangle$ + |$\downarrow$$\downarrow$$\rangle$)/$\sqrt{2}$. Our results show that strong spin-orbit coupling can induce unusual entangled states of matter in quantum dimer magnets.

Direct observation of two-dimensional magnons in atomically thin CrI 3

Magnons are collective spin excitations in crystals with long-range magnetic order. The emergent van der Waals magnets provide a highly tunable platform to explore magnetic excitations in the two-dimensional limit with intriguing properties, manifesting from their honeycomb lattice structure and switchable magnetic configurations. Here, we report the direct observation of two-dimensional magnons through magneto-Raman spectroscopy with optical selection rules determined by the interplay between crystal symmetry, layer number and magnetic states in atomically thin CrI 3 . In monolayers, we observe an acoustic magnon mode at ~0.3 meV. It has strict cross-circularly polarized selection rules locked to the magnetization direction that originates from the conservation of angular momentum of photons and magnons dictated by three-fold rotational symmetry. Additionally, we reveal optical magnon modes at ~17 meV. This mode is Raman silent in monolayers, but optically active in bilayers and bulk due to a relaxation of the parity criterion resulting from the layer index. In the layered antiferromagnetic states, we directly resolve two degenerate optical magnon modes with opposite angular momentum and conjugate optical selection rules. From these measurements, we quantitatively extract the spin-wave gap, magnetic anisotropy and intralayer and interlayer exchange constants, and establish two-dimensional magnets as a new platform for exploring magnon physics.

Coupled dimer and bond-order-wave order in the quarter-filled one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

Motivated by experiments on the organic compound (Per) 2 [Pt(mnt) 2 ], we study the ground state of the onedimensional Kondo lattice model at quarter filling with the density matrix renormalization group method. Here, we show a coupled dimer and bond-order-wave (BOW) state in the weak-coupling regime for the localized spins and itinerant electrons, respectively. The quantum phase transitions for the dimer and the BOW orders occur at the same critical coupling parameter J c , with the opening of a charge gap. The emergence of the combination of dimer and BOW order agrees with the experimental findings of the simultaneous Peierls and spin-Peierls transitions at low temperatures, which provides a theoretical understanding of such a phase transition. We also show that the localized spins in this insulating state have quasi-long-ranged spin correlations with collinear configurations, which resemble the classical dimer order in the absence of a magnetic order.
