Spectrally Efficient GaN High-Power Amplifier for Lunar Communications

The paper demonstrates a spectrally efficient Ka-band GaN MMIC based high-power amplifier (HPA) that uses a waveguide 4-port magic-tee as a 2-way power combiner to combine the output from two lower power amplifier circuits. The paper presents for the prototype HPA the measured output power, gain, power added efficiency, error vector magnitude for Offset-QPSK, 8PSK, 16APSK, 32APSK, and 16QAM waveforms, waveform spectrum, and out-of-band spectral regrowth. The HPA is intended for establishing a direct communication link between assets on the lunar surface/orbit and Earth.

On-wafer vector network analyzer measurements in the 220-325 Ghz frequency band

We report on a full two-port on-wafer vector network analyzer test set for the 220-325 GHz (WR3) frequency band. The test set utilizes Oleson Microwave Labs frequency extenders with the Agilent 8510C network analyzer. Two port on-wafer measurements are made with GGB Industries coplanar waveguide (CPW) probes. With this test set we have measured the WR3 band S-parameters of amplifiers on-wafer, and the characteristics of the CPW wafer probes. Results for a three stage InP HEMT amplifier show 10 dB gain at 235 GHz [1], and that of a single stage amplifier, 2.9 dB gain at 231 GHz. The approximate upper limit of loss per CPW probe range from 3.0 to 4.8 dB across the WR3 frequency band.

Common base amplifier with 7 - dB gain at 176 GHz in InP mesa DHBT technology

We report a single stage tunded amplifier that exhibits 7 dB small signal gain at 176 GHz. Common Base topology is chosen as it has the best maximum stable gain (MSG) in this frequency band when compared to common emitter and common collector topologies. The amplifiers are designed and fabricated in InP mesa double heterojunction bipolar transistor (DHBT) technology.

GEOSTAR-II: A Prototype Water Vapor Imager/Sounder for the Path Mission

We describe the development and progress of the GeoSTAR-II risk reduction activity for the NASA Earth Science Decadal Survey PATH Mission. The activity directly addresses areas of technical risk including the system design, low noise receiver production, sub-array development, signal distribution and digital signal processing.

CHARM: A CubeSat Water Vapor Radiometer for Earth Science

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Ames Research Center (ARC) are partnering in the CubeSat Hydrometric Atmospheric Radiometer Mission (CHARM), a water vapor radiometer integrated on a 3U CubeSat platform, selected for implementation under NASA Hands-On Project Experience (HOPE-3). CHARM will measure 4 channels at 183 GHz water vapor line, subsets of measurements currently performed by larger and more costly spacecraft (e.g. ATMS, AMSU-B and SSMI/S). While flying a payload that supports SMD science objectives, CHARM provides a hands-on opportunity to develop technical, leadership, and project skills. CHARM will furthermore advance the technology readiness level (TRL) of the 183 GHz receiver subsystem from TRL 4 to TRL 6 and the CubeSat 183 GHz radiometer system from TRL 4 to TRL 7.

Initial Results from the GeoSTAR-II Laboratory Demonstration

The Geostationary Synthetic Thinned Aperture Radiometer (GeoSTAR) team recently concluded its second Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO) IIP-07, "GeoSTAR technology development and risk reduction for PATH". The major accomplishments during this project at JPL were:1) Demonstrate performance and scalability of the 183 GHz receivers 2) Local oscillator phasing architecture and technology 3) Subarray design validation including feedhorns, manifolds and alignment 4) System demonstration of signal distribution topology and measurements. Significant progress has been made to retiring risk of the various subsystems.
