Local-Area-Network Simulator

Local Area Network Extensible Simulator (LANES) computer program provides method for simulating performance of high-speed local-area-network (LAN) technology. Developed as design and analysis software tool for networking computers on board proposed Space Station. Load, network, link, and physical layers of layered network architecture all modeled. Mathematically models according to different lower-layer protocols: Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) and Star*Bus. Written in FORTRAN 77.

Evaluating local indirect addressing in SIMD proc essors

In the design of parallel computers, there exists a tradeoff between the number and power of individual processors. The single instruction stream, multiple data stream (SIMD) model of parallel computers lies at one extreme of the resulting spectrum. The available hardware resources are devoted to creating the largest possible number of processors, and consequently each individual processor must use the fewest possible resources. Disagreement exists as to whether SIMD processors should be able to generate addresses individually into their local data memory, or all processors should access the same address. The tradeoff is examined between the increased capability and the reduced number of processors that occurs in this single instruction stream, multiple, locally addressed, data (SIMLAD) model. Factors are assembled that affect this design choice, and the SIMLAD model is compared with the bare SIMD and the MIMD models.

Measurements and mechanisms of localized aqueous corrosion in aluminum-lithium alloys

Like most heat treatable aluminum alloys, localized corrosion and stress corrosion of Al-Li-Cu alloys is strongly dependent on the nature and distribution of second phase particles. To develop a mechanistic understanding of the role of localized corrosion in the stress corrosion process, bulk samples of T(sub 1) (Al2CuLi) and a range of Al-Cu-Fe impurity phases were prepared for electrochemical experiments. Potentiodynamic polarization and galvanic couple experiments were performed in standard 0.6 M NaCl and in simulated crevice solutions to assess corrosion behavior of these particles with respect to the alpha-Al matrix. A comparison of time to failure versus applied potential using a constant load, smooth bar SCC test technique in Cl(-), Cl(-)/CrO4(2-), and Cl(-)/CO3(2-) environments shows that rapid failures are to be expected when applied potentials are more positive than the breakaway potential (E sub br) of T(sub 1) (crack tip) but less than E(sub br) of alpha-Al (crack walls). It is shown that this criterion is not satisfied in aerated Cl(-) solutions. Accordingly, SCC resistance is good. This criterion is satisfied, however, in an alkaline isolated fissure exposed to a CO2 containing atmosphere. Rapid failure induced by these fissures was recently termed preexposure embrittlement. Anodic polarization shows that the corrosion behavior of T(sub 1) is relatively unaffected in alkaline CO3(2-) environments but the alpha-Al phase is rapidly passivated. X ray diffraction of crevice walls from artificial crevices suggests that passivation of alpha-Al occurs as hydrotalcite-type compound (LiAl2(OH)6)2(+) - CO3(2-) - nH2O.

Local normal galaxies

In the near future, high energy (E greater than 20 MeV) gamma ray astronomy offers the promise of a new means of examining the closest galaxies. Two and possibly three local galaxies, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds and M31, should be visible to the high energy gamma ray telescope on the Gamma Ray Observatory, and the first should be seen by GAMMA-1. With the assumptions of adequate cosmic ray production and reasonable magnetic field strengths, both of which should likely be satisfied, specific predictions of the gamma ray emission can be made separating the concepts of the galactic and universal nature of cosmic rays. A study of the synchrotron radiation from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) suggests that the cosmic ray density is similar to that in the local region of our galaxy, but not uniform. It is hoped the measurements will be able to verify this independent of assumptions about the magnetic fields in the LMC.

The local environments of low-redshift quasars and powerful radio galaxies

The local environments of 31 low-redshift QSOs and 35 powerful radio galaxies (PRGs) are studied on the basis of V and R CCD frames processed to generate catalogs of companion galaxies. The PRGs and radio-loud QSOs are noted to inhabit regions whose local galaxy densities are similar to normal giant ellipticals and 3-4 times less dense than the regions inhabited by lower power radio-loud elliptical galaxies. The brightest companion galaxy is on average about 2 mag dimmer than the QSO host galaxy or PRG. Attention is given to the implications of these results for theories of the origin of nuclear activity, as well as the relationship between various classes of active galaxies and QSOs.

Quantitation and immunocytochemical localization of ubiquitin conjugates within rat red and white skeletal muscles

Solid-phase immunochemical methods were employed to probe the dynamics of ubiquitin pools within selected rat skeletal muscles. The total ubiquitin content of red muscles was greater than that of white muscles, even though the fractional conjugation was similar for both types of muscles. The specificity for conjugated ubiquitin in solid-phase applications, previously demonstrated for an affinity-purified antibody against SDS-denatured ubiquitin, was retained when used as a probe for ubiquitin-protein adducts in tissue sections. Immunohistochemical localization revealed that differences in ubiquitin pools derived from the relative content of red (oxidative) vs white (glycolytic) fibers, with the former exhibiting a higher content of ubiquitin conjugates. Subsequent immunogold labeling demonstrated statistically significant enhanced localization of ubiquitin conjugates to the Z-lines in both red and white muscle fiber types.

Local-global analysis of crack growth in continuously reinfoced ceramic matrix composites

This paper describes the development of a mathematical model for predicting the strength and micromechanical failure characteristics of continuously reinforced ceramic matrix composites. The local-global analysis models the vicinity of a propagating crack tip as a local heterogeneous region (LHR) consisting of spring-like representation of the matrix, fibers and interfaces. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate the effects of LHR size, component properties, and interface conditions on the strength and sequence of the failure processes in the unidirectional composite system.

Local and global accuracy estimates for boundary element analysis

An a posteriori error estimation strategy for the boundary element solution of two-dimensional heat conduction problem is presented. The error estimate formulation is based on the boundary element equations and employs a least squares fit of the solutions obtained from these equations. A local error estimate is evaluated for the unknown quantity in each element. The global error estimates are found from local (element) quantities. The range and accuracy of the proposed strategy is very good as demonstrated by problems containing smooth and non-smooth solutions.

A deformation-formulated micromechanics model of the effective Young's modulus and strength of laminated composites containing local ply curvature

A mathematical model based on the Euler-Bermoulli beam theory is proposed for predicting the effective Young's moduli of piecewise isotropic composite laminates with local ply curvatures in the main load-carrying layers. Strains in corrugated layers, in-phase layers, and out-of-phase layers are predicted for various geometries and material configurations by assuming matrix layers as elastic foundations of different spring constants. The effective Young's moduli measured from corrugated aluminum specimens and aluminum/epoxy specimens with in-phase and out-of-phase wavy patterns coincide very well with the model predictions. Moire fringe analysis of an in-phase specimen and an out-of-phase specimen are also presented, confirming the main assumption of the model related to the elastic constraint due to the matrix layers. The present model is also compared with the experimental results and other models, including the microbuckling models, published in the literature. The results of the present study show that even a very small-scale local ply curvature produces a noticeable effect on the mechanical constitutive behavior of a laminated composite.

Application of localized surface heating to actively control the boundary layer separation

The use of localized surface heating to improve the performance of the airfoil of a fixed wing or rotating blade at high angle of attack is considered. Separation control by active means can be accomplished by acoustic perturbation of the separated area above the airfoil or by localized surface heating in a pressure gradient region. Active control by sound in the vicinity of the leading edge of an airfoil is shown to greatly reduce the area of separation. Therefore, the overall circulation is sufficiently changed to result in an increase in lift and a reduction in drag.

Situationally Driven Local Navigation for Mobile Robots

For mobile robots to autonomously accommodate dynamically changing navigation tasks in a goal-directed fashion, they must employ navigation plans. Any such plan must provide for the robot's immediate and continuous need for guidance while remaining highly flexible in order to avoid costly computation each time the robot's perception of the world changes. Due to the world's uncertainties, creation and maintenance of navigation plans cannot involve arbitrarily complex processes, as the robot's perception of the world will be in constant flux, requiring modifications to be made quickly if they are to be of any use. This work introduces navigation templates (NaT's) which are building blocks for the construction and maintenance of rough navigation plans which capture the relationship that objects in the world have to the current navigation task. By encoding only the critical relationship between the objects in the world and the navigation task, a NaT-based navigation plan is highly flexible; allowing new constraints to be quickly incorporated into the plan and existing constraints to be updated or deleted from the plan. To satisfy the robot's need for immediate local guidance, the NaT's forming the current navigation plan are passed to a transformation function. The transformation function analyzes the plan with respect to the robot's current location to quickly determine (a few times a second) the locally preferred direction of travel. This dissertation presents NaT's and the transformation function as well as the needed support systems to demonstrate the usefulness of the technique for controlling the actions of a mobile robot operating in an uncertain world.

Analysis of matrix cracking and local delamination in (0/theta/-theta)sub s graphite epoxy laminates under tension load

Several 3D finite element analyses of (0/theta/-theta)sub s graphite epoxy laminates, where theta=15, 20, 25, 30, and 45 deg, subjected to axial tension load were performed. The interlaminar stresses in the theta/-theta interface were calculated with and without a matrix crack in the central -theta plies. The interlaminar normal stress changes from a small compressive stress when no matrix crack is present to a high tensile stress at the intersection of the matrix crack and free edge. The analysis of local delamination from the -theta matrix crack indicates a high strain energy release rate and a localized mode I component near the free edge, within one ply distance from the matrix crack. In order to examine the stress state causing the matrix cracking the maximum principal normal stress in a plane perpendicular to the fiber direction in the -theta ply was calculated in an uncracked laminate. The corresponding shear stress parallel to the fiber was also calculated. The principal normal stress at the laminate edge increases through the ply thickness and reached a very high tensile value at the theta/-theta interface indicating that the crack in the -theta ply may initiate at the theta/-theta interface. Crack profiles on the laminate edge in the -theta ply were constructed from the principal stress directions. The cracks were found to be more curved for layups with smaller theta angles, which is consistent with experimental observations in the literature.

Local delamination in laminates with angle ply matrix cracks. Part 1: Tension tests and stress analysis

Quasi-static tension tests were conducted on AS4/3501-6 graphite epoxy laminates. Dye penetrant enhanced x-radiography was used to document the onset of matrix cracking and the onset of local delaminations at the intersection of the matrix cracks and the free edge. Edge micrographs taken after the onset of damage were used to verify the location of the matrix cracks and local delamination through the laminate thickness. A quasi-3D finite element analysis was conducted to calculate the stresses responsible for matrix cracking in the off-axis plies. Laminated plate theory indicated that the transverse normal stresses were compressive. However, the finite element analysis yielded tensile transverse normal stresses near the free edge. Matrix cracks formed in the off-axis plies near the free edge where in-plane transverse stresses were tensile and had their greatest magnitude. The influence of the matrix crack on interlaminar stresses is also discussed.

Local grid refinement for transonic flow problems

The present use of locally refined Cartesian grids to solve transonic flow problems about three-dimensional aircraft configurations obviates surface-conforming grid generation through an embedding of surface-geometry paneling in the grid. Accurate resolution of flow close to the boundary, and in regions with strong velocity gradients, is achieved via hierarchical local refinement which subdivides a given grid cell into eight cells. Fast and reliable convergence is obtained by combining several preconditioners and damping strategies. Methods are suggested for preclusion of global convergence problems.

Thin-layer and full Navier-Stokes, locally-conical and three-dimensional asymmetric solutions

The unsteady, compressible thin-layer and full Navier-Stokes equations are used to numerically simulate steady and unsteady asymmetric, supersonic, locally-conical flows around a 5-deg-semiapex angle circular cone. The main computational scheme used for the present computations is the implicit, upwind, flux-difference splitting, finite-volume scheme. Comparisons of the solutions using the two sets of equations are presented for the flow asymmetry and its control. Computational studies are also presented to investigate the effects of the freestream Reynolds number and the locally-scaled Reynolds number on the flow asymmetry. These studies are carried out using the full Navier-Stokes equations. Three-dimensional, asymmetric flow solutions are also presented for a 5-deg-semiapex angle cone of unit length and a cone-cylinder configuration. The three-dimensional solutions are obtained by using the thin-layer equations and short-duration transient side-slip disturbances along with a very fine grid.

An optimal sensing strategy of a proximity sensor system for recognition and localization of polyhedral objects

An algorithm is presented for the recognition and localization of thre-dimensional polyhedral objects based on an optical proximity sensor system capable of measuring the depth and orientation of a local area of an object surface. Emphasis is given to the determination of an optimal sensor trajectory or an optimal probing, for efficient discrimination among all the possible interpretations. The determination of an optimal sensor trajectory for the next probing consists of the selection of optimal beam orientations based on the surface normal vector distribution of the multiple interpretation image (MII) and the selection of an optimal probing plane by projecting the MII onto the projection plane perpendicular to a selected beam orientation and deriving the optimal path on the projection plane. The selection of optimal beam orientation and probing plane is based on the measure of discrimination power of a cluster of surfaces of an MII. Simulation results are shown.

Characteristic time-stepping or local preconditioning of the Euler equations

A derivation is presented of a local preconditioning matrix for multidimensional Euler equations, that reduces the spread of the characteristic speeds to the lowest attainable value. Numerical experiments with this preconditioning matrix are applied to an explicit upwind discretization of the two-dimensional Euler equations, showing that this matrix significantly increases the rate of convergence to a steady solution. It is predicted that local preconditioning will also simplify convergence-acceleration boundary procedures such as the Karni (1991) procedure for the far field and the Mazaheri and Roe (1991) procedure for a solid wall.

The definition and stability of local inertial reference frames

VLBI measurements of extragalactic radio sources are utilized to develop a definition system for local inertial reference frames. Significant astrometric errors are identified and minimized by means of a parameter-estimation technique. A reference frame is measured for 30 min to observe the radio emission of the object to be located in the frame as well as the emission from about five additional sources which define the frame. Because the structures of the objects are unknown and tropospheric fluctuations exist, limiting errors exist for both single-epoch position determination and epoch-to-epoch differential position measurements. Data are presented regarding relativistic gravitational deflection by Jupiter which show that the local reference frame is stable at 240 microarcseconds over 12 days.
