Connecting People to Data: Enabling Data Connected Communities through Enhancements to the Geothermal Data Repository: Preprint

The Department of Energy's (DOE) Geothermal Data Repository (GDR) has implemented a series of new features designed to connect people to data. These features, which are based on feedback from the GDR user community and surveys of the greater geothermal research community, are designed to improve data quality and empower members of all communities to better engage with geothermal data resources by providing universal access to data and by improving the connections between data providers, subject matter experts, and the communities of people using GDR data. This paper will explore some of the recent enhancements made to the GDR to improve data discoverability, reduce submission time, and result in better quality data submissions. These improvements include the ability for users to save a list of their favorite datasets, search for insight into geothermal datasets or data availability, or sign up to receive notifications of future updates to specific datasets. These improvements aim to enhance the overall user experience of the GDR while further connecting communities to the data they need to inform decisions, advance geothermal research, and develop innovative solutions to local energy problems.

Heuristic Evaluation Methods Applied to a Predictive Maintenance Chatbot

The need for an accessible iterative approach for evaluating prospective artificial intelligence (AI)/ML based technologies in the nuclear industry is needed, given the nature of algorithms and rapid advancements. This paper explores existing heuristic design principles for user-centered design and evaluates them based on their relevancy and usefulness for evaluating AI/ ML based technologies. Researchers at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) have developed a machine learning software application called VIsualization for PrEdictive maintenance Recommendation (VIPER), which is used to help users understand and engage with the tool to learn more about work orders, data used, predictive maintenance, and machine learning (ML) algorithms. Early user research studies used to access VIPER’s technology readiness level have occurred; however, there is room for further improvement of the software through heuristic evaluations along with other methods and user testing. This work describes the applicability of heuristic evaluation methods and cognitive walkthroughs to help ensure human readiness for prospective AI/ ML based applications, using VIPER as a candidate use case. This work supports industry in ensuring that prospective AI/ML based technologies are usable and useful for plant personnel at nuclear power plants, ultimately leading to their safe, reliable, and efficient use.

Model-based Systems Engineering: Creation and Implementation of Model Validation Rules for MOS 2.0

Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is an emerging modeling application that is used to enhance the system development process. MBSE allows for the centralization of project and system information that would otherwise be stored in extraneous locations, yielding better communication, expedited document generation and increased knowledge capture. Based on MBSE concepts and the employment of the Systems Modeling Language (SysML), extremely large and complex systems can be modeled from conceptual design through all system lifecycles. The Operations Revitalization Initiative (OpsRev) seeks to leverage MBSE to modernize the aging Advanced Multi-Mission Operations Systems (AMMOS) into the Mission Operations System 2.0 (MOS 2.0). The MOS 2.0 will be delivered in a series of conceptual and design models and documents built using the modeling tool MagicDraw. To ensure model completeness and cohesiveness, it is imperative that the MOS 2.0 models adhere to the specifications, patterns and profiles of the Mission Service Architecture Framework, thus leading to the use of validation rules. This paper outlines the process by which validation rules are identified, designed, implemented and tested. Ultimately, these rules provide the ability to maintain model correctness and synchronization in a simple, quick and effective manner, thus allowing the continuation of project and system progress.

VLM4Bio: A Benchmark Dataset to Evaluate Pretrained Vision-Language Models for Trait Discovery from Biological Images

Images are increasingly becoming the currency for documenting biodiversity on the planet, providing novel opportunities for accelerating scientific discoveries in the field of organismal biology, especially with the advent of large vision-language models (VLMs). We ask if pre-trained VLMs can aid scientists in answering a range of biologically relevant questions without any additional fine-tuning. In this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of 12 state-of-the-art (SOTA) VLMs in the field of organismal biology using a novel dataset, VLM4Bio, consisting of 469K question8 answer pairs involving 30K images from three groups of organisms: fishes, birds, and butterflies, covering five biologically relevant tasks. We also explore the effects of applying prompting techniques and tests for reasoning hallucination on the performance of VLMs, shedding new light on the capabilities of current SOTA VLMs in answering biologically relevant questions using images

Teaching AI when to care about gender

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a branch of Artificial Intelligence (AI) concerned with solving language tasks by modeling large amounts of textual data. Some NLP techniques use word embeddings which are semantic models where machine learning (ML) is used to learn to cluster semantically related words by learning about word co-occurrences in the original training text. Unfortunately, these models tend to reflect or even exaggerate biases that are present in the training corpus. Here we describe the Word Embedding Navigator (WEN), which is a tool for exploring word embedding models. We examine a specific potential use case for this tool: interactive discovery and neutralization of gender bias in word embedding models, and compare this human-in-the-loop approach to reducing bias in word embeddings with a debiasing post-processing technique.

VWC-BERT: Scaling Vulnerability–Weakness–Exploit Mapping on Modern AI Accelerators

Defending cybersystems needs accurate mapping of software and hardware vulnerabilities to generalized descriptions of weaknesses, and weaknesses to exploits. These mappings enable cyber defenders to build plans for effective defense and assessment of potential risks to a cybersystem. With close to 170k vulnerabilities, manual mapping is not a feasible option. However, automated mapping is challenging due to limited training data, computational intractability, and limitations in computational natural language processing. Tools based on breakthroughs in Transformer-based language models have been demonstrated to classify vulnerabilities with high accuracy. We make three key contributions in this paper: (1) We present a new framework, \VWCBERT, that augments the Transformer-based hierarchical multi-class classification framework of Das et al. (\textsc{V2W-BERT}) with the ability to map weaknesses to exploits. (2) We implement \VWCBERT~ on modern AI accelerator platforms using two data parallel techniques for the pre-training phase and demonstrate nearly linear speedups across NVIDIA and Graphcore accelerator platforms. We observe nearly linear speedups for up to 16 V100 and 8 A100 GPUs, and about 3.4$\times$ speedup for A100 relative to V100 GPUs. We also observe excellent speedups on Graphcore, with $5.7\times$ speedup on 128 IPUs relative to 16 IPUs. Enabled by scaling, we also demonstrate higher accuracy using a larger language model, RoBERTa-Large. We show up to 87\% accuracy for strict and up to 98\% accuracy for relaxed classification. (3) We develop a novel parallel link manager for the link prediction phase and demonstrate up to 21$\times$ speedup with 16 V100 GPUs relative to one V100 GPU, and thus reducing the runtime from 2.5 hours to 10 minutes. We believe that generalizability and scalability of \VWCBERT~ will benefit both the theoretical development and practical deployment of novel cyberdefense solutions and vulnerability classification.
