User's guide for the Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet (SBUV) instrument first year ozone-S data set

Total-ozone and ozone vertical profile results for Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet/Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (SBUV/TOMS) Nimbus 7 operation from November 1978 to November 1979 are available. The algorithm used have been thoroughly tested, the instrument performance has been examined in details, and the ozone results have been compared with Dobson, Umkehr, balloon, and rocket observations. The accuracy and precision of the satellite ozone data are good to at least within the ability of the ground truth to check and are self-consistent to within the specifications of the instrument. The 'SBUV User's Guide' describes the SBUV experiment and algorithms used. Detailed information on the data available on computer tape is provided including how to order tapes from the National Space Science Data Center.

User's guide for the computer code COLTS for calculating the coupled laminar and turbulent flow over a Jovian entry probe

A user's guide for a computer code 'COLTS' (Coupled Laminar and Turbulent Solutions) is provided which calculates the laminar and turbulent hypersonic flows with radiation and coupled ablation injection past a Jovian entry probe. Time-dependent viscous-shock-layer equations are used to describe the flow field. These equations are solved by an explicit, two-step, time-asymptotic finite-difference method. Eddy viscosity in the turbulent flow is approximated by a two-layer model. In all, 19 chemical species are used to describe the injection of carbon-phenolic ablator in the hydrogen-helium gas mixture. The equilibrium composition of the mixture is determined by a free-energy minimization technique. A detailed frequency dependence of the absorption coefficient for various species is considered to obtain the radiative flux. The code is written for a CDC-CYBER-203 computer and is capable of providing solutions for ablated probe shapes also.

Analytical description of charged particle transport along arbitrary guiding field configurations

Aspects of charged particle transport theory have been studied by Earl (1973, 1974, 1976) in a number of investigations. The investigations were conducted under the assumption that particles propagate along a DC guiding field with negligible perpendicular transport and that pitch-angle scattering by random fields can be described by the Fokker-Planck formalism. The present study provides a generalized and simplified treatment of focused transport. The first step is taken with respect to a perturbation analysis by which the Boltzmann equation is solved in terms of successively improved approximations to its exact solution. The first approximation is the sum of isotropic pseudodiffusive and anisotropic supercoherent components whose coefficients must satisfy two coupled partial differential equations. The normalization constant K and the pseudodiffusive velocity, which appear in the first-order transport equations, are given by simple integrals over the pitch angle.

Analytical description of charged particle transport along arbitrary guiding-field configurations

Focused particle transport is analyzed in terms of partial differential equations which are applicable to arbitrary spatial variations of the mean free path and the focusing length. A distribution function for transport is written in two forms of the Boltzmann equation and a coefficient of spatial diffusion is defined. Changes from a nearly coherent propagation of flare particles in regions of strong focusing near the sun to ordinary diffusion in the outer solar system are described as supercoherent transitions. A solution to the steady state problem is developed and results are presented for a monopolar guiding field configuration with isotropic diffusion gradually giving way to anisotropy in a region suggestive of a collimated beam of particles streaming away from its source.

Air Guide for Sheet-Metal Grinder

Tool attachment reduces heat distortion of sheet. Air-guide attachment directs air from grinder motor to grinding wheel and metal sheet being ground. Cooling air reduces thermal distortion of workpiece due to localized frictional heating. Particularly useful when grinding sheet metal.

Aerodynamic performance of a fan stage utilizing Variable Inlet Guide Vanes (VIGVs) for thrust modulation

An experimental research program was conducted in the Lewis Research Center's 9x15-foot (2.74x4.57 m) low speed wind tunnel to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of an inlet and fan system with variable inlet guide vanes (VIGVs) for use on a subsonic V/STOL aircraft. At high VIGV blade angles (lower weight flow and thrust levels), the fan stage was stalled over a major portion of its radius. In spite of the stall, fan blade stresses only exceeded the limits at the most extreme flow conditions. It was found that inlet flow separation does not necessarily lead to poor inlet performance or adverse fan operating conditions. Generally speaking, separated inlet flow did not adversely affect the fan blade stress levels. There were some cases, however, at high VIGV angles and high inlet angles-of-attack where excessive blade stress levels were encountered. An evaluation term made up of the product of the distortion parameter, K alpha, the weight flow and the fan pressure ratio minus one, was found to correlate quite well with the observed blade stress results.

User's guide for the Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet (SBUV) and the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) RUT-S and RUT-T data sets: October 31, 1978 to November 1, 1980

Raw data from the Solar Backscattered Ultrviolet/Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (SBUV/TOMS) Nimbus 7 operation are available on computer tape. These data are contained on two separate sets of RUTs (Raw Units Tapes) for SBUV and TOMS, labelled RUT-S and RUT-T respectively. The RUT-S and RUT-T tapes contain uncalibrated radiance and irradiance data, housekeeping data, wavelength and electronic calibration data, instrument field-of-view location and solar ephemeris information. These tapes also contain colocated cloud, terrain pressure and snow/ice thickness data, each derived from an independent source. The "RUT User's Guide" describes the SBUV and TOMS experiments, the instrument calibration and performance, operating schedules, and data coverage, and provides an assessment of RUT-S and -T data quality. It also provides detailed information on the data available on the computer tapes.

High voltage design guide. Volume 5: Spacecraft

This report supplies the technical background and design techniques needed by an engineer who is designing electrical insulation for high-voltage, high-power components, equipment, and systems on spacecraft. The data in this volume is in addition to the material in Volume 4 of the final report "High Voltage Design Guide: Aircraft' which is common to the electrical insulation design for both aircraft and spacecraft equipment. The common data includes testing, tracking, partial discharges and corona. Unique material involves the semi vacuum environment, spacecraft charging, and multipactor.

Surface-polaritonlike waves guided by thin, lossy metal films

Surface-plasmon polaritons guided by thin, lossy metallic films bounded by dissimilar dielectric media are investigated. New solutions to the dispersion relation are found, representing waves that are leaky (radiative) in one of the dielectrics. The new waves are interpreted in terms of the coupling of a damped surface plasmon at one interface with continuum modes at the other. Their excitation by end-fire coupling techniques is suggested.
