The role of engineered materials in superconducting tunnel junction X-ray detectors - Suppression of quasiparticle recombination losses via a phononic band gap

An engineered structure is proposed that can alleviate quasi-particle recombination losses via the existence of a phononic band gap that overlaps the 2-Delta energy of phonons produced during recombination of quasi-particles. Attention is given to a 1D Kronig-Penny model for phonons normally incident to the layers of a multilayered superconducting tunnel junction as an idealized example. A device with a high density of Bragg resonances is identified as desirable; both Nb/Si and NbN/SiN superlattices have been produced, with the latter having generally superior performance.

A (He-3)-gap heat switch for use below 2 K in zero g

We have designed and tested a compact heat switch that has a simple design and a very large ON/OFF ratio. The design uses concentric cylinders of copper that can be fabricated with higher precision and with thinner web thickness than other designs. It is assembled with a technique that carefully controls the narrow gap between adjacent segments. These features allow a very large surface area for conduction to be fitted into a small volume. The conduction medium is liquid or gaseous He-3, which is put into or taken out of the switch by a small nearby charcoal pump in order to avoid an external mechanical pump and a long pump line. Measurements of its performance down to 1 K show an ON/OFF conduction ratio of about 4000.

Error analysis for reducing noisy wide-gap concentric cylinder rheometric data for nonlinear fluids - Theory and applications

This work discusses the propagation of errors for the recovery of the shear rate from wide-gap concentric cylinder viscometric measurements of non-Newtonian fluids. A least-square regression of stress on angular velocity data to a system of arbitrary functions is used to propagate the errors for the series solution to the viscometric flow developed by Krieger and Elrod (1953) and Pawlowski (1953) ('power-law' approximation) and for the first term of the series developed by Krieger (1968). A numerical experiment shows that, for measurements affected by significant errors, the first term of the Krieger-Elrod-Pawlowski series ('infinite radius' approximation) and the power-law approximation may recover the shear rate with equal accuracy as the full Krieger-Elrod-Pawlowski solution. An experiment on a clay slurry indicates that the clay has a larger yield stress at rest than during shearing, and that, for the range of shear rates investigated, a four-parameter constitutive equation approximates reasonably well its rheology. The error analysis presented is useful for studying the rheology of fluids such as particle suspensions, slurries, foams, and magma.

Preliminary analysis of Dione Regio, Venus: The final Magellan regional imaging gap

In Sep. 1992, the Magellan spacecraft filled the final large gap in its coverage of Venus when it imaged an area west of Alpha Regio. F-BIDR's and some test MIDR's of parts of this area were available as of late December. Dione Regio was imaged by the Arecibo observatory and a preliminary investigation of Magellan images supports the interpretations made based on these earlier images: Dione Regio is a regional highland on which is superposed three large, very distinct volcanic edifices. The superior resolution and different viewing geometry of the Magellan images also clarified some uncertainties and revealed fascinating details about this region.

Optical position measurement for a large gap magnetic suspension system: Design and performance analysis

An optical measurement system (OMS) has been designed and tested for a large gap magnetic suspension system (LGMSS). The LGMSS will be used to study control laws for magnetic suspension systems for vibration isolation and pointing applications. The LGMSS features six degrees of freedom and consists of a planar array of electromagnets that levitate and position a cylindrical element containing a permanent magnet core. The OMS provides information on the location and orientation of the element to the LGMSS control system to stabilize suspension. The hardware design of this optical sensing system and the tracking algorithms are presented. The results of analyses and experiments are presented that define the accuracy limits of the optical sensing system and that quantify the errors in position estimation.

Comparison of Gap Elements and Contact Algorithm for 3D Contact Analysis of Spiral Bevel Gears

Three dimensional stress analysis of spiral bevel gears in mesh using the finite element method is presented. A finite element model is generated by solving equations that identify tooth surface coordinates. Contact is simulated by the automatic generation of nonpenetration constraints. This method is compared to a finite element contact analysis conducted with gap elements.

The lithium content and other properties of F2-G5 giants in the Hertzsprung Gap

As stars of 2-5 solar mass evolve across the Hertzsprung Gap they should first deplete their surface lithium by convective dilution and then, when convection penetrates deeper, begin to bring CN processed material to their surfaces. To investigate this process we have observed 52 giants, 25 of which have known C/N ratios, for their Li abundances. After eliminating four stars that may actually be dwarfs and including the two components of Capella analyzed by Pilachowski and Sowell we have compared our (Li/Fe) ratios with models of Swenson. For stars showing v sin i greater than 50 km/s we find (Li/Fe) to be uneffected by mixing for B - V less than 0.7 as predicted. For stars cooler than B - V = 0.7 both v sin i and (Li/Fe) drop to smaller values. For the sharp lined stars (v sin i less than 50 km/s) we find a drop in Li between B - V = 0.45 and 0.60 which cannot be understood in terms of dilution by convection. Various possible causes of such an early depletion or dilution of surface Li are discussed including diffusion at the base of the convection zone, mass loss possibly enhanced by pulsation, and magnetic activity as in the magnetic A and B type stars. The models of Richer & Michaud (1993) with diffusion point toward a satisfactory solution. A few giants with low v sin i values stand out with much higher than expected (Li/Fe) values despite their cool effective temperatures. We do not understand why those stars have not depleted their lithium as have most giants of similar color. The correlation of (N/C) with (Li/Fe) follows expectations in so far as almost all stars with enhanced (N/C) have depleted their Li as well.

Expanded Equations for Torque and Force on a Cylindrical Permanent Magnet Core in a Large-Gap Magnetic Suspension System

The expanded equations for torque and force on a cylindrical permanent magnet core in a large-gap magnetic suspension system are presented. The core is assumed to be uniformly magnetized, and equations are developed for two orientations of the magnetization vector. One orientation is parallel to the axis of symmetry, and the other is perpendicular to this axis. Fields and gradients produced by suspension system electromagnets are assumed to be calculated at a point in inertial space which coincides with the origin of the core axis system in its initial alignment. Fields at a given point in the core are defined by expanding the fields produced at the origin as a Taylor series. The assumption is made that the fields can be adequately defined by expansion up to second-order terms. Examination of the expanded equations for the case where the magnetization vector is perpendicular to the axis of symmetry reveals that some of the second-order gradient terms provide a method of generating torque about the axis of magnetization and therefore provide the ability to produce six-degree-of-freedom control.

Simplified Analytical Model of a Six-Degree-of-Freedom Large-Gap Magnetic Suspension System

A simplified analytical model of a six-degree-of-freedom large-gap magnetic suspension system is presented. The suspended element is a cylindrical permanent magnet that is magnetized in a direction which is perpendicular to its axis of symmetry. The actuators are air core electromagnets mounted in a planar array. The analytical model consists of an open-loop representation of the magnetic suspension system with electromagnet currents as inputs.

Bulk Growth of Wide Band Gap II-VI Compound Semiconductors by Physical Vapor Transport

The mechanism of physical vapor transport of II-VI semiconducting compounds was studied both theoretically, using a one-dimensional diffusion model, as well as experimentally. It was found that the vapor phase stoichiometry is critical in determining the vapor transport rate. The experimental heat treatment methods to control the vapor composition over the starting materials were investigated and the effectiveness of the heat treatments was confirmed by partial pressure measurements using an optical absorption technique. The effect of residual (foreign) gas on the transport rate was also studies theoretically by the diffusion model and confirmed experimentally by the measurements of total pressure and compositions of the residual gas. An in-situ dynamic technique for the transport rate measurements and a further extension of the technique that simultaneously measured the partial pressures and transport rates were performed and, for the first time, the experimentally determined mass fluxes were compared with those calculated, without any adjustable parameters, from the diffusion model. Using the information obtained from the experimental transport rate measurements as guideline high quality bulk crystal of wide band gap II-VI semiconductor were grown from the source materials which undergone the same heat treatment methods. The grown crystals were then extensively characterized with emphasis on the analysis of the crystalline structural defects.

Temperature Tunable Air-Gap Etalon Filter

We report on experimental measurements of a temperature tuned air-gap etalon filter. The filter exhibits temperature dependent wavelength tuning of 54 pm/C. It has a nominal center wavelength of 532 nm. The etalon filter has a 27 pm optical bandpass and 600 pm free spectral range (finesse approximately 22). The experimental results are in close agreement with etalon theory.
