Comparison of cloud-top topography and rainfall rates at the surface revealed that the areas of heavy rain are located where there are depressions at the anvil top. It was also found that the Z-R relationships show a large scatter when vertical and/or horizontal air currents are strong. Results of this research led to Project NIMROD proposed to begin in May 1978.
Two-axis goniometer accurately measures movements of fingers about knuckle joints, diagnosing hands structurally changed by rheumatoid arthritis. Instrument measures lateral movement which is small in normal knuckles but increased in diseased joints. Goniometer is two connected protractors that simultaneously measure angles in perpindicular planes. Dials are offset to clear bony protuberances; extension and offset adjustments span any hand size.
Laboratory tests indicate electron magnetic resonance (EMR) would be effective in measuring thickness of coal overlying rock substrate. In prototype dual-frequency EMR system, Sample is irradiated by two radio frequencies. Signals are mixed, producing sum and difference output frequencies that are detected by receiver. Magnetic field is varied to scan resonant spot through sample. In system designed for field use, electromagnet is U-shaped, so that sample can be adjacent to, rather than inside the probe. Same coil is used for transmitting and receiving.
New device gives qualitive readings of flatness, curvature, or waviness of surface. Designed to check for waviness in surface of Space Shuttle prior to installation of heat-resistant tiles, it could be used to measure regularity or irregularity of other surfaces. Irregularities are measured by noting readings of three dial indicators on simple, inexpensive instruments.
New tool measures separation between recessed parallel surfaces. Tiles have overhanging edges, tool designed to slip into gap from end so it extends through 0.040-inch crack. Measure gaps between 0.200 and 0.400 inch so gap fillers of proper thickness can be selected. Useful in numerous industrial situation involving gap measurements in inaccessable places.
Gas-emmission and time-integrated-current measurements indicate battery charge state. Tests indicate possibility of monitoring state of charge of lead/acid batteries at any stage in charging cycle by measuring charging current and either gas evolution or electrode potential. Data then processed by microcomputer. Uses include cell voltage, cell pressure, cell temperature and rate of gas recombination on catalyst.
Tool for measuring threaded depth of tapped holes accurate and easy to use. Depth read from graduated scale on tool. Gives direct reading of depth, eliminating estimates and calculations. When tool is removed from hole, spring-loaded sleeve returns to zero.
Transfer of dye shows quality of contact between two mating parts. Mating parts checked for fit by spreading fluorescent dye on one, making brief light contact with other, and looking (under UV light) for transferred dye. Dye offers greater visibility under ultraviolet illumination, allowing better indication of how precisely parts match and what areas interfere.
Instrument measures both temperature and temperature gradient in confined areas. With thermopile embedded in epoxy close to thermocouple, single unit measures both temperature and heat flow. Epoxy selected for low thermal conductivity and compatibility with test environment.
System for checking levelness of machines and structures requires less time and labor than conventional optical systems. Measures differences in elevation to within 0.002 in. (0.05 mm). Floats at opposite ends of structure determine positions of cores in linear variable-differential transformers. Outputs of LVDT's carried by cables to control console, where displayed to operator as difference in core levels and therfore of ends of structure.

The objective was to measure liquid mass to plus or minus 1 percent in two-phase tanks in orbit. Viewgraphs present information on concept selection, program status and anticipated results. The program aims at test results showing 1 percent accuracy, the development of a breadboard test article usable in the lab or aboard a KC-135, and a concept that will permit flight article design to proceed.

The thermal effects of simulant gas injection and aerodynamic heating at the model's surface on the measurements of a non-watercooled, flow through balance were investigated. A stainless steel model of a hypersonic air breathing propulsion cruise missile concept (HAPCM-50) was used to evaluate this balance. The tests were conducted in the 20-inch Mach 6 wind tunnel at NASA-Langley. The balance thermal effects were evaluated at freestream Reynolds numbers ranging from .5 to 7 x 10(exp 6) ft and angles of attack between -3.5 to 5 deg at Mach 6. The injection gases considered included cold air, hot air, and a mixture of 50 percent Argon and 50 percent Freon-12. The stagnation temperatures of the cold air, hot air, and Ar-Fr(12) reached 111, 214, and 283 F, respectively within the balance. A bakelite sleeve was inserted into the inner tube of the balance to minimize the thermal effects of these injection gases. Throughout the tests, the normal force, side force, yaw moment, roll moment, and pitching moment balance measurements were unaffected by the balance thermal effects of the injection gases and the wind tunnel flow. However, the axial force (AF) measurement was significantly affected by balance heating. The average zero shifts in the AF measurements were 1.9, 3.8, and 5.9 percent for cold air, hot air, and Ar-Fr(12) injection, respectively. The AF measurements decreased throughout these tests which lasted from 70 to 110 seconds. During the cold air injection tests, the AF measurements were accurate up to at least ten seconds after the model was injected into the wind tunnel test section. For the hot air and Ar-Fr(12) tests, the AF measurements were accurate up to at least five seconds after model injection.
A fatigue study was undertaken to determine how much electrical-discharge-machine (EDM) processing affected the fatigue life of balance materials: EDM and regular milling-machine (MM) samples were compared. Simulation of a typical balance stress configuration was devised for the fatigue testing in order to obtain results more closely related to balance situations. The fatigue testing of the EDM and MM specimens has indicated that the EDM technique does indeed reduce the fatigue life of 15-5PH steel, the first balance material tested. This conclusion was based on comparisons of the specimen fatigue lives with theoretical and manufacturer's data. Hence the EDM surface effects are detrimental to the fatigue life of this balance material.
A series of cryogenic (cryo) cycles was conducted in the cryo chamber at the National Transonic Facility (NTF) in order to identify the cause of apparent strain shifts in axial force with temperature for the Pathfinder I model and to minimize their effects. The results of the investigation indicated that the major cause of axial force end point shifts and thermal hysteresis loops was the thickness of the Teflon insulation on the instrumentation wires crossing the balance. By reducing the thickness of the insulation and the total number and size of the wires, apparent strain values were achieved for the model with instrumentation wires which were nearly identical to those for the model without wires. Because of the special design features used, the balance output was very accurate and repeatable over the entire NTF temperature range, even with balance thermal gradients as large as 64 F and transient conditions as large as 3 F/minute.
