Next-generation even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states of interacting composite fermions

The discovery of the fractional quantum Hall state (FQHS) in 1982 ushered a new era of research in many-body condensed matter physics. Among the numerous FQHSs, those observed at even-denominator Landau level filling factors are of particular interest as they may host quasiparticles obeying non-Abelian statistics and be of potential use in topological quantum computing. The even-denominator FQHSs, however, are scarce and have been observed predominantly in low-disorder two-dimensional (2D) systems when an excited electron Landau level is half filled. An example is the well-studied FQHS at filling factor ν = 5/2 which is believed to be a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-type, paired state of flux-particle composite fermions (CFs). Here, we report the observation of even-denominator FQHSs at ν = 3/10, 3/8, and 3/4 in the lowest Landau level of an ultrahigh-quality GaAs 2D hole system, evinced by deep minima in longitudinal resistance and developing quantized Hall plateaus. Quite remarkably, these states can be interpreted as even-denominator FQHSs of CFs, emerging from pairing of higher-order CFs when a CF Landau level, rather than an electron or a hole Landau level, is half-filled. Our results affirm enhanced interaction between CFs in a hole system with significant Landau level mixing and, more generally, the pairing of CFs as a valid mechanism for even-denominator FQHSs, and suggest the realization of FQHSs with non-Abelian anyons.

Microscopic diagnosis of universal geometric responses in fractional quantum Hall liquids

Topological quantum liquids contain internal degrees of freedom that are coupled to geometric response. Yet, an explicit and microscopic identification of the geometric response remains difficult. Here, taking notable fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states as typical examples, we systematically investigate a promising protocol—the Dehn-twist deformation on the torus geometry—to probe the geometric response of correlated topological states and establish the relation between such response and universal properties of pertinent states. Based on analytical derivations and numerical simulations, we find that the geometry-induced Berry phase encodes features for a broad class of FQH states at the Laughlin, hierarchy, Halperin and non-Abelian Moore-Read fillings. Our findings conclusively demonstrate that the adiabatic Dehn-twist deformation can faithfully capture rich geometric and topological information, including the Hall viscosity and topological spin of the pertinent FQH state and the chiral central charge of the underlying edge conformal field theory. Our approach provides a powerful way to reveal topological orders of generic FQH states and address previously open questions.

Crystalline solutions of the Kohn-Sham equations in the fractional quantum Hall regime

A Kohn-Sham density functional approach has recently been developed for the fractional quantum Hall effect, which maps the strongly interacting electrons into a system of weakly interacting composite fermions subject to an exchange correlation potential as well as a density dependent gauge field that mimics the "flux quanta" bound to composite fermions. To get a feel for the role of various terms, we study the behavior of the self-consistent solution as a function of the strength of the exchange correlation potential, which is varied through an ad hoc multiplicative factor. Here, we find that a crystal phase is stabilized when the exchange correlation interaction is sufficiently strong relative to the composite-fermion cyclotron energy. Various properties of this crystal are examined.

Possible continuous transition from fractional quantum Hall to stripe phase at ν e = 7 / 3

We study the phase diagram of the ν e = 7/3 state in the N=1 Landau level in the presence of band mass anisotropy. Using the density matrix renormalization group on an infinite cylinder geometry, we find a continuous transition from the topologically ordered Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state to a stripe phase with a period of approximately five and a half magnetic lengths. The transition is driven by the condensation of the magnetoroton mode which becomes gapless at the critical point. We interpret the transition within the composite-boson theory as the onset of stripe order in a superfluid background, resulting from the roton mode going soft.

Particle-Hole Symmetry and the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in the Lowest Landau Level

Here, we report on detailed experimental studies of a high-quality heterojunction insulated-gate field-effect transistor (HIGFET) to probe the particle-hole symmetry of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) states about half-filling in the lowest Landau level. The HIGFET is specially designed to vary the density of a two-dimensional electronic system under constant magnetic fields. We find in our constant magnetic field, variable density measurements that the sequence of FQHE states at filling factors ν = 1/3, 2/5, 3/7… and its particle-hole conjugate states at filling factors 1-ν = 2/3, 3/5, 4/7… have a very similar energy gap. Moreover, a reflection symmetry can be established in the magnetoconductivities between the ν and 1-ν states about half-filling. Our results demonstrate that the FQHE states in the lowest Landau level are manifestly particle-hole symmetric.

Domain Textures in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

Impacts of domain textures on low-lying neutral excitations in the bulk of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) systems are probed by resonant inelastic light scattering. We demonstrate that large domains of quantum fluids support long-wavelength neutral collective excitations with well-defined wave vector (momentum) dispersion that could be interpreted by theories for uniform phases. Access to dispersive low-lying neutral collective modes in large domains of FQHE fluids such as long wavelength magnetorotons at filling factor v=1/3 offer significant experimental access to strong electron correlation physics in the FQHE.

Multiple Magnetorotons and Spectral Sum Rules in Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

We study, numerically, the charge neutral excitations (magnetorotons) in fractional quantum Hall systems, concentrating on the two Jain states near quarter filling, ν = 2/7 and ν = 2/9, and the ν = 1/4 Fermi-liquid state itself. In contrast to the ν = 1/3 states and the Jain states near half filling, on each of the two Jain states ν = 2/7 and ν = 2/9 the graviton spectral densities show two, instead of one, magnetoroton peaks. The magnetorotons have spin 2 and have opposite chiralities in the ν = 2/7 state and the same chirality in the ν = 2/9 state. Here, we also provide a numerical verification of a sum rule relating the guiding center spin s¯ with the spectral densities of the stress tensor.

Even-Denominator Fractional Quantum Hall State at Filling Factor ν = 3 / 4

Fractional quantum Hall states (FQHSs) exemplify exotic phases of low-disorder two-dimensional (2D) electron systems when electron-electron interaction dominates over the thermal and kinetic energies. Particularly intriguing among the FQHSs are those observed at even-denominator Landau level filling factors, as their quasiparticles are generally believed to obey non-Abelian statistics and be of potential use in topological quantum computing. Such states, however, are very rare and fragile, and are typically observed in the excited Landau level of 2D electron systems with the lowest amount of disorder. Here we report the observation of a new and unexpected even-denominator FQHS at filling factor ν = 3/4 in a GaAs 2D hole system with an exceptionally high quality (mobility). Furthermore, our magnetotransport measurements reveal a strong minimum in the longitudinal resistance at ν = 3/4, accompanied by a developing Hall plateau centered at (h/e 2 )/(3/4). This even-denominator FQHS is very unusual as it is observed in the lowest Landau level and in a 2D hole system. While its origin is unclear, it is likely a non-Abelian state, emerging from the residual interaction between composite fermions.

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect with Unconventional Pairing in Monolayer Graphene

Motivated by the observation of even denominator fractional quantum Hall effect in the n = 3 Landau level of monolayer graphene [Kim et al., Nat. Phys. 15, 154 (2019)], we consider a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer variational state for composite fermions and find that the composite-fermion Fermi sea in this Landau level is unstable to an f-wave pairing. Analogous calculation suggests the possibility of a p-wave pairing of composite fermions at half filling in the n = 2 graphene Landau level, whereas no pairing instability is found at half filling in the n = 0 and n = 1 graphene Landau levels. The relevance of these results to experiments is discussed.

Quantum Anomalous Hall Crystal at Fractional Filling of Moiré Superlattices

We predict the emergence of a state of matter with intertwined ferromagnetism, charge order, and topology in fractionally filled moiré superlattice bands. Remarkably, these quantum anomalous Hall crystals exhibit a quantized integer Hall conductance that is different than expected from the filling and Chern number of the band. Microscopic calculations show that this phase is robustly favored at half-filling (𝜈 =1/2) at larger twist angles of the twisted semiconductor bilayer 𝑡⁢MoTe 2 .

Unlocking New Regimes in Fractional Quantum Hall Effect with Quaternions

We demonstrate that formulating the composite-fermion theory of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect in terms of quaternions greatly expands its reach and opens the door into many interesting issues that were previously not amenable to quantitative theoretical investigation. As an illustration, we explore the possibility of a nematic or a charge-density wave instability of the composite-fermion Fermi sea at half-filled Landau level and of the nearby FQH states by looking for a gap closing instability of the neutral magneto-roton excitation. As a result, our quaternion formulation of the FQH effect has been inspired by mathematical developments in the theoretical analyses of gravitational wave modes and cosmic microwave background radiation, where an important role is played by spin-weighted spherical harmonics that are nothing but monopole harmonics appearing in the spherical geometry for the FQH effect.

Superconducting vortices carrying a temperature-dependent fraction of the flux quantum

Magnetic field penetrates type-II bulk superconductors by forming quantum vortices that enclose a magnetic flux equal to the magnetic flux quantum. The flux quantum is a universal quantity that depends only on fundamental constants. In this study, we investigated isolated vortices in the hole-overdoped Ba 1–x K x Fe 2 As 2 (x = 0.77) by using scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. In many locations, we observed objects that carried only part of a flux quantum, with a magnitude that varied continuously with temperature. Here, we demonstrated mobility and manipulability of these objects and interpreted them as quantum vortices with nonuniversally quantized (fractional) magnetic flux whose magnitude is determined by the temperature-dependent parameters of a multicomponent superconductor.

Ultraclean hybrid poplar lignins via liquid–liquid fractionation using ethanol–water solutions

As recovered from the byproducts stream of a cellulosic ethanol biorefinery, the renewable biopolymer lignin is too impure and polydisperse for many proposed applications. By mixing a hybrid poplar lignin with hot ethanol–water solutions, two liquid phases, one polymer-rich and one solvent-rich, are created. This liquid–liquid equilibrium phenomenon was used to generate solvated (and thus liquefied) lignin fractions of controlled molecular weight for which the impurities analyses for sugars and ash were near or below the limits of detection. Furthermore, those carbohydrates and metals impurities end up highly concentrated in a single process stream also having potential value.
