Collaborative TPL Assessment of Wave Energy Converters and Farms

The Technology Performance Level (TPL) assessment is a holistic methodology to assess a wave energy converter (WEC) technology’s ability to achieve [continental grid] market competitiveness and acceptability via criteria-based consideration of key cost, performance, environmental, safety, and societal drivers. The TPL assessment can be applied at all technology development stages and associated technology readiness levels (TRLs).

Agrivoltaics: Solar Farming for a Greener Future

Resilient, secure, diversified, and disaster-hardened energy systems are critical to Puerto Rico's clear energy future. This presentation builds on NREL's PR100 One Year Progress Summary Report, discussing the intersection of land availability, PV capacity growth, and the potential role of agrivoltaics in contributing to Puerto Rico's 100% renewable energy goal and agricultural sector resilience. An overview of the state-of-the-science in agrivoltaics is provided, including the NREL InSPIRE Puerto Rican pilot project on hurricane-resistant, shade-grown agrivoltaic coffee. Agrivoltaics is discussed in the context of food-energy resilience for island nations, and future research & development needs are highlighted.

The Potential for Solar Farms to Protect Crops Against Extreme Weather Events

With climate change posing serious risks to crop production, solar PV has the potential to protect agriculture against extreme climate events. This concept has significant implications for agrivoltaics, but large gaps exist in the physical understanding of the climate resiliency that solar PV can bring to agriculture, and current studies focus on one-off designs ideal to protect against specific climate events. This study investigates key climate events that threaten agriculture throughout the year, including winter, spring, and summer climate threats.
