Alternate Actinide Calibration is beneficial for calibration using lower activity standards • ICP-MS and ICP-OES are valid complementary methods for U analysis • Recently procured Agilent 8900 ICP-QQQ-MS in radiological buffer area –installation in progress • Helium (kinetic energy discrimination) can be used for reducing polyatomic interferences • Installing hydrogen and oxygen (reaction gases) on 8900 ICP-MS systems to improve LODs of several challenging analytes
Conclusions of this presentation conclude that the experiment is feasible with at least 10 critical configurations, and low expected benchmark uncertainty. Potential high impact for the understanding of commercially used neutron absorber plates. Next steps are to think about other configurations: rod pitch, other rods – Finalize plate support, uncertainty study. Additionally, the potential use of IER-441 central test region to safely place the plate in the core. Next steps include the Determination of the neutron absorber plate characterization path and the Potential SINBAD benchmark of neutron transmission measurements.

This report documents research and development conducted in support of deployment of accident-tolerant fuels. Specifically, the performance of chromium coating during a beyond design basis accident was investigated. An 18m reference core was considered, and the performance of cases with and without chromium coating compared. An extended cycle length of 24m was then considered with the chromium coating, to determine if the benefit of using the chromium coating was more or less significant than the increased fission product inventory when considering fission product release. The chromium coating model utilized here is a preliminary implementation and further work is recommended on a more detailed model.
This study assessed two potential techniques for the extraction of pure Mo-100 target material from Mo-99/Tc-99m waste streams: 1) an established solvent-extraction method tailored for Mo-99 spent solution recycling, and 2) a low-temperature molten salt electrochemical process. By making minor modifications to the conventional solvent extraction method, particularly to accommodate the altered solubility limits arising from elevated Na+ concentrations in the waste, we achieved quantitative Mo recoveries. Although the electrochemical technique offers advantages in scalability and processing simplicity, it proved ineffective in recovering Mo from a NaOH-KOH salt melt.

The fundamentals of stabilized flame dynamics and flashback events in a premixed low swirl burner (LSB) configuration are visualized experimentally using nanosecond (ns)-based high-speed hydroxyl radical planar laser-induced fluorescence (OH-PLIF). Swirlers with two different turning angles, 〖26〗^o and 〖33〗^o and three different center-body hole diameters, 1.08, 1.12 and 1.16 mm with measured swirl numbers varying from 0.43 to 0.49 are tested in this study at atmospheric temperature and pressure inlet conditions. An increase in flashback propensity is observed with increasing ϕ, X_(H_2 ) and decreasing V via detailed investigation of flame lift-off length (L) above the burner rim. Flashback ϕ (ϕ_FB) investigations show an expected linearly increasing trend with decreasing X_(H_2 ) and increasing V for each swirler studied and the results agree well with detailed L investigations in a stable flame configuration. ϕ_FB studies for different swirlers show an increase in flashback resistance with the increase in center-body hole diameter and swirl angle. Spatiotemporally resolved kHz-rate OH-PLIF is a promising technique to observe rapidly occurring flashback events and it can be applied for turbulence-chemistry interaction model validation.
The intent of this project was to determine appropriate methodologies for analysis of lithium isotopes for 1) quasi-online monitoring of isotope separations, and 2) high-precision characterization of end-products, including lithium fluoride and lithium-beryllium fluoride (FLiBe). Traditionally, isotopic analysis requires the use of expensive, sophisticated instrumentation with often relatively long analytical timelines. We determined that the use of cheaper, smaller, and easier-to-operate instruments are sufficient for rapid analysis of lithium isotopes to monitor isotope separation efficiencies. In addition, we found that the analytical precision afforded by these lower-cost instruments is comparable to the more sophisticated (i.e., more expensive) instrumentation when the isotopic composition of lithium becomes highly depleted in 6Li. This finding will ultimately help lower costs of manufacturing of depleted lithium that is required for operation of certain designs of Generation IV nuclear reactors.
