Novel Homogeneous Electrocatalysts for the Nitrogen Reduction Reaction

This project funded a broad range of fundamental studies in the research labs of Prof. John Berry at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. The overall goals of this research are to identify and explore promising new fundamental chemistry of metal-metal bonded coordination compounds in catalysis, with a particular focus on exploring the technologies needed for the transition to a nitrogen economy. We focus on two key technologies for this overall goal: Electrochemical synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen and water, and Electrochemical ammonia oxidation to produce nitrogen. Ammonia is the most hydrogen-rich material known aside from hydrogen itself, and is therefore an ideal fuel unit. Currently, ammonia synthesis uses significant fossil fuel inputs, has a large carbon footprint, and is performed in large, centralized facilities, mandating the exploration of carbon-neutral approaches that can be done in a distributable manner so that ammonia transportation does not pose a bottleneck. Our work towards these goals is organized as follows: Goal 1: Synthesis and characterization of new catalysts and N2RR intermediates; Goal 2: Thermodynamic investigations of all catalysts and intermediates; Goal 3: Exploration of the electrocatalytic N¬2RR using new catalysts. We additionally made progress toward a related Goal 4: Exploration of new types of catalysts with other, cheaper transition metals. We had a major setback in year 1 of the grant due to the student driving this project (Tristan Brown) contracting an incurable disease that made it impossible for him to perform lab work. Tristan transitioned to a computational chemistry project and was subsequently able to complete his PhD.

Development and Commercialization of a Nanosegrated Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalyst

The research under this CRADA adds to the understanding of how catalyst activity and durability should be balanced and tailored for oxygen evolution reaction. The research also provides technical insights in how catalyst degradation might occur under long-term operation under highly oxidative and acidic conditions. In longer term, the project could benefit the pubic by enabling more efficient, affordable and reliable electrolysis technologies.

Semiconductor‐Electrocatalyst Contacts: Theory, Experiment, and Applications to Solar Water Photoelectrolysis

The goal of the work supported by this program was to use new types of photoelectrochemical experiments, supported by simulation and theory, to develop an improved microscopic picture of electron transfer in combined semiconductor|catalyst|solution (sem|cat|sol) systems. An emphasis was placed on developing techniques which can directly characterize electronic interfacial phenomena without first assuming a junction model. We then aimed to illustrate the design principles that enhance interfacial processes and enable high-efficiency devices. Our work thus provides deep insight into the processes that, in general, use light to drive chemical reactions.

Protocol for Screening Water Oxidation or Reduction Electrocatalyst Activity in a Three-Electrode Cell for Alkaline Exchange Membrane Electrolysis

Accurate and reproducible screening of the electrocatalytic activity of novel materials for Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) and Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) requires establishing an easily adoptable harmonized testing protocol. Herein, we describe a robust, instrumentation-independent testing technique utilizing a three-electrode cell with a fully immersed working electrode. Compared to rotating disk electrode (RDE) techniques, this protocol produces current densities close to those obtained in real electrolyzers and eliminates the usage of the expensive RDE apparatus.

Synthesis of Highly Active Pd@Cu–Pt/C Methanol Oxidation Electrocatalysts via Continuous, Co-Electroless Deposition

Controlled deposition of metals is essential for the creation of bimetallic catalysts having predictable composition and character. Continuous co-electroless deposition (co-ED) permits the creation of bimetallic catalysts with predictive control over composition. This method was applied to create a suite of Cu–Pt mixed-metal shell catalysts for use in methanol electrooxidation in direct methanol fuel cell applications (DMFCs). Enhanced performance of Cu–Pt compositions over Pt alone was predicted by existing computational studies in the literature. Experimental evidence from this study supports the bifunctional catalyst explanation for enhanced activity and confirms the optimum Cu:Pt ratio as Cu 3 Pt for this methanol electrooxidation. This ability to control the composition of a bimetallic shell can be extended to other systems where the ratio of two metals is critical for catalytic performance.

Nitrogen-functionalized platinum-iridium electrocatalyst

The invention provides a nitrogen-functionalized platinum-transition metal catalyst having the formula Pt-M-N X /C (where M is a transition element such as Fe, Co, Ni, Nb, Ta, Ir, Rh, or Ru) for use at the hydrogen electrode of a hydrogen/bromine redox flow battery. The new catalyst possesses excellent activity and durability in the HBr/Br 2 environment, showing superior resistance to halide poisoning than conventional Pt/C or Pt-M/C catalysts.

Nanofiber electrocatalyst

A nanofibrous catalyst for in the electrolyzer and methods of making the catalyst. The catalysts are composed of highly porous transition metal carbonitrides, metal oxides or perovskites derived from the metal-organic frameworks and integrated into a 3D porous nano-network electrode architecture. The catalysts are low-cost, highly active toward OER, with excellent conductivity yet resistant to the oxidation under high potential operable under both acidic and alkaline environments.

High performance earth-abundant electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction and other reactions

Electrodes for catalyzing electrochemical reactions (e.g., the hydrogen evolution reaction) are provided. The electrode may comprise a ternary pyrite-phase transition metal phosphochalcogenide (e.g., CoPS) disposed on a substrate, wherein the ternary pyrite-phase transition metal phosphochalcogenide is a solid material of a ternary compound of a transition metal, phosphorous (P), and a chalcogen, the solid material characterized by a substantially single, ternary alloy phase having a pyrite crystal structure. Methods of using and making the electrodes are also provided.
