Performance Analysis and Radiation Damage Estimation of the Stopping Target Monitor Detectors in Mu2e

The Mu2e experiment aims to search for the charged lepton flavour violating (CLFV) process of a coherent, neutrinoless, conversion of a muon into an electron within the proximity of an aluminium nucleus. Mu2e seeks to measure the ratio (R μe ) of the rate of this conversion process, relative to that of ordinary muon capture. Mu2e will achieve world-leading sensitivity, improving the current limit of Rμe < 7 ×10 -13 (90% C.L.),set by the SINDRUM-II experiment, by an order of 104. This corresponds to a single-event sensitivity of Rμe < 2.87 × 10 -17 (90% C.L.). Many beyond Standard Model (BSM) theories require CLFV to occur at a rate accessible by Mu2e. Any observation of CLFV at Mu2e would have profound implications on particle physics. The Stopping Target Monitor (STM) will be comprised of both a HPGe and a LaBr3 detector which will monitor the signals of photons produced in stopped-muon processes to a required accuracy of 10%. To achieve the desired sensitivity, it is imperative that the detectors perform at their optimal level. The STM detectors are placed within a harsh radiation environment in the form of a high energy ‘flash’ of gamma radiation as well as a flux of fast neutrons. Estimations of radiation damage to HPGe in literature is limited. This thesis reports an approach which utilizes the Kinetic-Energy Released in Matter (KERMA) parameter that considers the energy dependence of the incident flux and the cross-section information for the incident particle. Resampling schemes have been adopted to give a realistic rate over the experiment run time. The results have then been normalized to the radiation damage caused by a 252 Cf source. The estimated time before annealing of the detector is necessary is found to be 75 and 78 months in the case of neutron damage and τ ~ 24 years, 11 months in the case of electron/positron induced damage. This shows significant improvement on the previous estimations.

VARI3D & PERSENT: Perturbation and Sensitivity Analysis

The nodal diffusion method is one of the most widely used approaches in modern reactor analysis. In the nodal diffusion method, a coarse multi-group set of “homogenized” parameters is constructed such that the complex geometry of a reactor core along with the energy dependence of neutron and gamma ray cross sections in a nuclear reactor are conserved in the simpler geometry. The homogenization is typically done on a fuel assembly level as is the case in the DIF3D code developed at Argonne National Laboratory. The nodal methodology is used primarily to predict fuel cycle behavior of nuclear systems of which there is a substantial amount of validation in the literature. Another use of the nodal method is to obtain reactivity coefficients and kinetics parameters for use in a safety analysis of a given nuclear reactor. While there are many ways to obtain reactivity worth and kinetics parameters, the work presented in this manuscript is unique as it provides the user with the ability to compute reactivity worths, kinetics parameters, and cross section sensitivities with a Cartesian and hexagonal geometry based transport code.

A Search for Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter (Final Report)

Decades of dark matter searches with increasingly higher sensitivity have so far not been able to detect the most-favored hypothetical dark matter particles. This has increased interest in sterile neutrinos with masses in the kilo-electronvolt (keV) range as possible dark matter candidates. We have established a and new and world-leading approach to search for keV-scale sterile neutrinos with superconducting radiation detectors. For this, we have implanted radioactive beryllium-7 (Be-7) nuclei into our superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) detectors and measured the recoil energy of the lithium-7 (Li-7) daughter nucleus with high accuracy. If the associated electron neutrino wave function contains some admixture of a keV sterile flavor, the Li-7 recoil energy will be shifted and produce an additional peak in the spectrum whose energy depends on the sterile neutrino mass. While we have not observed any evidence for sterile neutrinos in these precision decay experiments, the experiment has increased the sensitivity of sterile neutrino searches by a factor of ~10 over competing approaches in the mass range from ~10 to ~800 keV. The next generation of STJ detectors that we have developed as part of this project will be able further increase the sensitivity of the sterile neutrino search by at least another two orders of magnitude.

Molecular dynamics simulations of fission gas xenon (Xe) diffusion at UO 2 grain-boundaries (Rev.1)

The diffusivity of fission gas xenon (Xe) at UO 2 grain-boundaries is one of the most important parameters in mechanistic modeling of fission gas diffusion in UO 2 based nuclear fuels. In this report, we use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the Xe diffusivity in UO 2 grain-boundaries, employing the many-body potential developed by Cooper, Rushton and Grimes for UO 2 . Three different types of grain-boundaries are investigated, twist Σ5, tilt Σ5, and a random grain-boundary. Diffusion activation energies in the range of 0.39 – 1.46 eV are obtained for the Xe diffusivity. Comparison to results for the uranium vacancy diffusivity from MD simulations employing the same methodology suggests a weak to moderate attractive Xe-uranium vacancy binding energy depending on the grain-boundary type.

Complete 6D Tracking of a Single Electron in the IOTA Ring

We present the results of the first experiments on 6-dimensional phase-space tracking of a single electron in a storage ring, using a linear multi-anode photomultiplier tube for simultaneously measuring transverse coordinates and arrival times of synchrotron-radiation pulses. This technology makes it possible to fully reconstruct turn-by-turn positions and momentums in all three planes for a single particle. Complete experimental particle tracking enables the first direct measurements of dynamical properties, including invariants, amplitude and energy dependence of tunes with exceptional precision, and chaotic behavior.

Indirect reactions and connection with R-matrix theory

It is often the case that nuclear reactions that are important for societal applications or basic science are difficult to measure directly in existing facilities for accelerated beams. The difficulty might be associated with an exceedingly small cross section, as the ones obtained at beam energies well below the Coulomb barrier, or with the impossibility of devising a short-lived target, as is the case for neutron-induced reactions on unstable isotopes. The fruitful line of experimental research addressing this issue with alternative (indirect) reactions has been developed in parallel to the theory needed to make the connection between the observed data and the desired cross sections of the (direct) reaction under study. Within this context, we present here an explicit connection between the indirect cross section and the R-matrix parameters which describe the energy-dependent cross section of the desired direct reaction.

Physics-informed Estimation of the Covariance Matrix for Various Neutron Spectra

A method for estimating covariance matrices which capture the uncertainties in calculated reactor spectra has been developed. This method is based on perturbing the parameters of a physics-based analytic model fitted to a calculated spectrum. The covariance of the perturbed analytic spectra imposes energy-dependent correlations due to the physics of the neutron processes in the reactor, i.e., a fission component, a 1/E down-scatting component, and a thermal Maxwellian component. An analytic model is developed which is shown to produce good fits to several reactor environments. The covariance matrices produced via this method are then used as the prior spectrum in STAYSL least squares spectrum adjustment where it is combined with integral metrics, such as activation measurements, to produce a high-fidelity neutron spectrum characterization. It was concluded that the methodology showed agreeable results for the ACRR free-field spectrum adjustment in STAYSL resulting in a 𝜒 2 value of 2.21 (per degree of freedom), but further work is needed to describe scattering and interface regions.
