Reduced-Cost Four-Component Relativistic Double Ionization Potential Equation-of-Motion Coupled-Cluster Approaches with 4-Hole–2-Particle Excitations and Three-Body Clusters

The double ionization potential (DIP) equation-ofmotion (EOM) coupled-cluster (CC) method with 4-hole−2- particle (4h-2p) excitations on top of the CC with singles, doubles, and triples calculation, abbreviated as DIP-EOMCCSDT(4h-2p), along with its perturbative DIP-EOMCCSD(T)(a)(4h-2p) approximation, are extended to a relativistic four-component (4c) framework. In addition, we introduce and test a new computationally practical DIP-EOMCC approach, which we call DIPEOMCCSD( T)(ã)(4h-2p), that approximates the treatment of 4h- 2p correlations within the DIP-EOMCCSD(T)(a)(4h-2p) method and reduces the $\mathcal{N}$ 8 scaling characterizing DIP-EOMCCSDT(4h- 2p) and DIP-EOMCCSD(T)(a)(4h-2p) to $\mathcal{N}$ 7 with the system size $\mathcal{N}$. Further improvements in computational efficiency are obtained using the frozen natural spinor (FNS) approximation to reduce the numbers of unoccupied spinors entering the correlated steps of the DIP-EOMCC calculations according to a well-defined occupation-number-based threshold. The resulting 4c-FNS-DIPEOMCC approaches are used to compute DIPs for the series of inert gas atoms from argon to radon as well as the vertical DIPs in Cl 2 , Br 2 , HBr, and HI, which have been experimentally examined in the past. We demonstrate that, when using complete basis set extrapolations and FNS truncation threshold of 10 −4.5 , the 4c-FNS-DIP-EOMCCSD(T)(ã)(4h-2p) calculations are capable of predicting DIPs in agreement with experimental data, improving upon their nonrelativistic and spin-free scalar-relativistic counterparts, particularly when examining DIPs characterized by stronger spin−orbit coupling effects.

Adhesively-bonded Metal-CFRTP Bi-materials: Enhanced Crack Growth Resistance via Plasma and Quantified Fracture via Size Effect Method

This work investigated air plasma effect on the Mode I crack growth resistance of adhesively-bonded metal-CFRTP dissimilar joints by using aluminum alloy (AA6061) and short-carbon-fiber-reinforced polyamide 66 (CFRPA66) as an example, and the Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) fracture testing as an evaluation method. The results show that air plasma treatment can significantly improve the fracture resistance of adhesively-bonded AA6061-CFRPA66 dissimilar joints with about 140% enhanced Mode I fracture energy in maximum compared to non-treated ones. The quantified fracture energies from size effect method for both non-treated and plasma-treated cases are geometry-independent, whereas this is not true for modified beam theory causing geometry-dependent results. The foregoing improvement was confirmed from the failure surface morphology of plasma-treated specimens, showing fibers peeling off from CFRPA66 surface due to plasma-enhanced bonding between CFRPA66 and adhesive by the formation of covalent bonds at their interface. This study demonstrated air plasma as an efficient surface modification method to enhance the fracture resistance of adhesively-bonded metal-CFRTP dissimilar joints, and size effect method as a characterization method to properly quantify their fracture properties. These aspects are valuable in the area of multi-materials joining.

Texture Memory in Hexagonal Metals and Its Mechanism

Texture memory is a phenomenon in which retention of initial textures occurs after a complete cycle of forward and backward transformations, and it occurs in various phase-transforming materials including cubic and hexagonal metals such as steels and Ti and Zr alloys. Texture memory is known to be caused by the phenomena called variant selection, in which some of the allowed child orientations in an orientation relationship between the parent and child phases are preferentially selected. Without such variant selection, the phase transformations would randomize preferred orientations. In this article, the methods of prediction of texture memory and mechanisms of variant selections in hexagonal metals are explored. The prediction method using harmonic expansion of orientation distribution functions with the variant selection in which the Burgers orientation relationship, {110}β//{0001} α-hex <1$\bar{1}$1>β//$\langle2\bar{11}0\rangle$ α-hex , is held with two or more adjacent parent grains at the same time, called “double Burgers orientation relation (DBOR)”, is introduced. This method is shown to be a powerful tool by which to analyze texture memory and ultimately provide predictive capabilities for texture changes during phase transformations. Variation in nucleation and growth rates on special boundaries and an extensive growth of selected variants are also described. Analysis of textures of commercially pure Ti observed in situ by pulsed neutron diffraction reveals that the texture memory in CP-Ti is indeed quite well predicted by consideration of the mechanism of DBOR. The analysis also suggests that the nucleation and growth rates on the special boundary of 90° rotation about $\langle2\bar{11}0\rangle$ α-hex should be about three times larger than those of the other special boundaries, and the selected variants should grow extensively into not only one parent grain but also other grains in α-hex(hexagonal)→β(bcc) transformation. The model calculations of texture development during two consecutive cycles of α-hex→β→α-hex transformation in CP-Ti and Zr are also shown.

An Approximate Dissipation Function for Large Strain Rubber Thermo-Mechanical Analyses

Mechanically induced viscoelastic dissipation is difficult to compute. When the constitutive model is defined by history integrals, the formula for dissipation is a double convolution integral. Since double convolution integrals are difficult to approximate, coupled thermo-mechanical analyses of highly viscous rubber-like materials cannot be made with most commercial finite element software. In this study, we present a method to approximate the dissipation for history integral constitutive models that represent Maxwell-like materials without approximating the double convolution integral. The method requires that the total stress can be separated into elastic and viscous components, and that the relaxation form of the constitutive law is defined with a Prony series. Numerical data is provided to demonstrate the limitations of this approximate method for determining dissipation. Rubber cylinders with imbedded steel disks and with an imbedded steel ball are dynamically loaded, and the nonuniform heating within the cylinders is computed.

Ensemble methods for quantification of potassium oxide in ChemCam Mars and laboratory spectra

In this paper we test new approaches for predicting the amount of element oxides in rock samples from the ChemCam instrument suite onboard the NASA Curiosity rover by focusing on K 2 O. Using the expanded dataset compiled by Gasda et al. (2021) with and without the Earth to Mars (E2M and NoE2M) transformation discussed in Clegg et al. (2017) we trained blended submodels using the “double blending” technique and compared these to ensemble methods (Random Forest, ExtraTrees, and Gradient Boosting Regression). We found that ensemble methods performed similar to blended submodels when looking at RMSE-P on the laboratory spectra and provided significant advantages when looking at spectra coming from Mars. For the full model, blended submodels achieved an RMSE-P of 0.62 and 0.60 (E2M and NoE2M respectively) while Gradient Boosting Regression resulted in a slightly improved RMSE-P of 0.59 and 0.60. More importantly, by employing a local RMSE-P estimation technique where model performance is evaluated based on nearby test samples we found that using ensemble methods can lower the quantification limit for K 2 O from the current value of ≈0.6 wt% to ≈0.08 wt% using Extra Trees and Random Forest. This would allow for a much larger range of K 2 O values to be quantified on Mars with greater certainty given that most targets seen on Mars tend to have <1 wt% K2O. Finally, we used both Mean Decrease in Impurity (MDI) and permutation importance techniques to investigate the wavelengths used by the ensemble methods and found that they correspond to known potassium emission lines. This suggests that ensemble methods can provide an easier to train and improved alternative to blended submodels for predicting potassium compositions from Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) data.

A bi-layer barrier design for 122-type iron-based superconducting wires and tapes

Iron-based superconducting wires and tapes hold great promise for high-field magnet applications. A promising design for 122-type wires and tapes based on the powder-in-tube method is using silver and copper double-layer sheaths. For this design a heat treatment temperature below ~ 779 °C is required to prevent Ag-Cu liquid formation. However, this may be below the optimal heat treatment temperature for the critical current density, and still cannot prevent Ag-Cu interdiffusion occurring in the solid state. In this work we propose adding a niobium or tantalum or vanadium (or their alloys) barrier layer between the Ag and Cu to solve the Ag-Cu interdiffusion issue, given that the group-VB metals (vanadium, niobium, tantalum) are relatively inert to both Ag and Cu. To investigate the effectiveness of this design, BaFe 1.84 Co 0.16 As 2 wires and tapes with Ag/Cu and Ag/Ta/Cu sheaths, as well as Ba 0.6 K 0.4 Fe 2 As 2 wires and tapes with Ag/Cu and Ag/Nb/Cu sheaths, were fabricated. It was found that both the Ta and Nb layers kept integral after wire drawing, but after a large flat-rolling reduction the Ta layer broke while the Nb layer kept integral. In the tapes with Ag/Cu sheaths (without the Ta or Nb layer) Cu diffused through the Ag layer and into the powder cores during 740 °C heat treatment, while in the tapes with Ag/Nb/Cu sheaths the Nb layer effectively blocked Ag-Cu interdiffusion even at 900 °C. Further, this work demonstrates that Ta is a suitable barrier material for 122-type wires, while Nb is suitable for both wires and tapes. In this design using Ag/Nb (or Ta)/Cu sheaths, we can regard the outer Cu as the conductor matrix while the Ag and Nb (or Ta) serve as two layers of barriers that suppress reactions between the components. Thus, we call this design a “bi-layer barrier” design for 122-type wires and tapes.

An interactive machine learning platform for analyzing multi-particle coincidence data from cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy

We present SCULPT (Supervised Clustering and Uncovering Latent Patterns with Training), a comprehensive software platform for analyzing tabulated high-dimensional multi-particle coincidence data from Cold Target Recoil Ion Momentum Spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) experiments. The software addresses critical challenges in modern momentum spectroscopy by integrating advanced machine learning techniques with physics-informed analysis in an interactive web-based environment. SCULPT implements uniform manifold approximation and projection for non-linear dimensionality reduction to reveal correlations in high-dimensional data. We also discuss potential extensions to deep autoencoders for feature learning and genetic programming for automated discovery of physically meaningful observables. A novel adaptive confidence scoring system provides quantitative reliability assessments by evaluating user-selected clustering quality metrics with predefined weights that reflect each metric’s robustness. The platform features configurable molecular profiles for different experimental systems, interactive visualization with selection tools, and comprehensive data filtering capabilities. Utilizing a subset of SCULPT’s capabilities, we analyze photo-double-ionization data measured using the COLTRIMS method for three-body dissociation of the D 2 O molecule, revealing distinct fragmentation channels and their correlations with physics parameters. The software’s modular architecture and web-based implementation make it accessible to the broader atomic and molecular physics community, significantly reducing the time required for complex multi-dimensional analyses. This opens the door to finding and isolating rare events exhibiting non-linear correlations on the fly during experimental measurements, which can help steer exploration and improve the efficiency of experiments.

Effects of Testosterone Supplementation on Ghrelin and Appetite During and After Severe Energy Deficit in Healthy Men

Abstract Background Severe energy deficits cause interrelated reductions in testosterone and fat free mass. Testosterone supplementation may mitigate those decrements, but could also reduce circulating concentrations of the orexigenic hormone ghrelin, thereby exacerbating energy deficit by suppressing appetite. Objective To determine whether testosterone supplementation during severe energy deficit influences fasting and postprandial ghrelin concentrations and appetite. Design and methods Secondary analysis of a randomized, double-blind trial that determined the effects of testosterone supplementation on body composition changes during and following severe energy deficit in nonobese, eugonadal men. Phase 1 (PRE-ED): 14-day run-in; phase 2: 28 days, 55% energy deficit with 200 mg testosterone enanthate weekly (TEST; n = 24) or placebo (PLA; n = 26); phase 3: free-living until body mass recovered (end-of-study; EOS). Fasting and postprandial acyl ghrelin and des-acyl ghrelin concentrations and appetite were secondary outcomes measured during the final week of each phase. Results Fasting acyl ghrelin concentrations, and postprandial acyl and des-acyl ghrelin concentrations increased in PLA during energy deficit then returned to PRE-ED values by EOS, but did not change in TEST (phase-by-group, P < 0.05). Correlations between changes in free testosterone and changes in fasting acyl ghrelin concentrations during energy deficit (ρ = -0.42, P = 0.003) and body mass recovery (ρ = -0.38; P = 0.01) were not mediated by changes in body mass or body composition. Transient increases in appetite during energy deficit were not affected by testosterone treatment. Conclusions Testosterone supplementation during short-term, severe energy deficit in healthy men prevents deficit-induced increases in circulating ghrelin without blunting concomitant increases in appetite. The effect of multiple encounters on short-period comet orbits.

The observed orbital elements of short-period comets are found to be consistent with the hypothesis of derivation from long-period comets as long as two assumptions are made. First, the distribution of short-period comets has been randomized by multiple encounters with Jupiter and second, the short-period comets have low velocities of encounter with Jupiter. Some 16% of the observed short-period comets have lower encounter velocities than is allowed mathematically using Laplace's method. This may be due to double-encounter processes with Jupiter and Saturn. The distribution of unobservable short-period comets can be inferred in part from the observed comets. It is shown that there may be many short-period comets having orbits between Jupiter and Saturn with somewhat higher inclinations than those with perihelia near the earth.

Compatibility testing of spacecraft materials and spacestorable liquid propellants

Compatibility data for aluminum alloy 2219-T87 and titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V were obtained while these alloys were exposed to both liquid and vapor fluorine and FLOX at -320 F + or -10 F. These data were obtained using a new low cost compatibility method which incorporates totally sealed containers and double dogbone test specimens and propellants in the simultaneous exposure to vapor and liquid phases. The compatibility investigation covered a storage period in excess of one year. Pitting was more severe in the 2219-T87 aluminum alloy than in the Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy for both fluorine and FLOX exposure. The degree of chemical attack is more severe in the presence of FLOX than in fluorine and phase. The mechanical properties of the two alloys were not affected by storage in either of the two propellants.

Time-resolved double-probe study in a He-Hg afterglow plasma

An experimental double-probe technique is described which allows the He(+) ion density to be measured directly as a function of time in the afterglow of a helium-metal-vapor discharge. As an application example, two CW laser transitions of the He-Hg(+) laser at 6150 and 7944 A are considered which both arise from excited 7p (2) P terms of Hg II. The time-resolved double-probe technique is used to measure the destruction rate of the He(+) ion density, which is then compared with the spontaneous-emission decay rate for 7p (2) P terms of Hg II. The results obtained show unambiguously and directly that the dominant excitation process for the two transitions considered is a charge-transfer collisional reaction of the form He(+) plus Hg yields He plus metastable Hg(+) plus the energy defect for this reaction. It is noted that the time-resolved double-probe technique may provide a simple method for measuring ion mobilities in a multi-ion plasma.

Total ozone determination by spectroradiometry in the middle ultraviolet

A method has been developed to determine total ozone from multispectral measurements of the direct solar irradiance. The total ozone is determined by a least squares fit to the spectrum between 290 nm and 380 nm. The aerosol extinction is accounted for by expanding it in a power series in wavelength; use of the linear term proved adequate. A mobile laboratory incorporating a sky scanner has been developed and used to obtain data to verify the method. Sun tracking, wavelength setting of the double monochromator, and data acquisition are under control of a minicomputer. Results obtained at Wallops Island, Virginia, and Palestine, Texas, agree well with simultaneous Dobson and Canterbury spectrometer and balloon ECC ozonesonde values. The wavelength calibration of the monochromator and the values for the normalized ozone absorption are the most important factors in an accurate determination of total ozone.

Trends and techniques for space base electronics

A system was developed for depositing aluminum and aluminum alloys by the D.C. sputtering technique. This system which was designed for a high level of cleanliness and ion monitoring the deposition parameters during film preparation is ready for studying the deposition and annealing parameters upon double level metal preparation. The finite element method was studied for use in the computer modeling of two dimensional MOS transistor structures. An algorithm was developed for implementing a computer study which is based upon the finite difference method. The program was modified and used to calculate redistribution data for boron and phosphorous which had been predeposited by ion implantation with range and straggle conditions typical of those used at MSFC. Data were generated for 111 oriented SOS films with redistribution in N2, dry O2 and steam ambients. Data are given showing both two dimensional effects and the evolution of the junction depth, sheet resistance and integrated dose with redistribution time.

Telescoping space station modules

A design concept is described wherein telescoping space station modules would be utilized to nearly double the useful volume onboard a station. Methods for utilizing the concept to obtain enchanced protection from space debris and radiation are described. The amenability of the concept to variation in station configuration, assembly, and disassembly is discussed. A modification of the concept which could provide flexibility in the manner in which the Shuttle Orbiter is docked with the station and enhance collision avoidance during such maneuvers is described.

Specular and direct radiative loads on space structure

The use of special models for trusses, and of fast graphical computational techniques, are discussed to reduce the computation times of intersurface radiation loads and specularly reflected radiation. The conditions under which the One-Dimensional approximation can be used, and the computation of the obstructed view factors for arbitrary surfaces, including the One-Dimensional surface, are considered using both contour and double area integration. The Adaptive Ray Tracing method is found to be very fast for surface configurations and obstruction densities typical of space structures, and it is shown to be best suited to views of J from I which are relatively simple and cover only a few subareas of S.

Mixed Cu-simple metal dimers and trimers - CuLi, CuLi2, CuNa, CuK, CuBe, CuBe2, Cu2Be, CuAl, and CuAl2

Theoretical studies of selected diatomic and triatomic molecules containing copper and the simple metals Li, Na, K, Be, and Al are presented, with emphasis on elucidating the nature of the bonding in mixed transition metal-simple metal systems. Large Gaussian basis sets are used in the diatomic calculations, and are used to calibrate the triatomic calculations, in which somewhat smaller Gaussian basis sets are employed. Electron correlation is incorporated using both the single-reference singles plus doubles configuration interaction and coupled pair functional methods. It is found that alkali atoms form very polar sigma bonds with copper, and that the ionicity increases with the inclusion of higher excitations because they improve the electron affinity of copper, which in turn allows a larger negative charge on copper. Aluminum is found to form stronger bonds than beryllium, since it does not have to undergo sp hybridization. Some of the trimers bond by forming three-center three-electron bonds. These multicenter bonds are quite strong even when compared to the two-electron bonds in the dimers or to other bonding mechanisms in the trimers.

Fast, adaptive summation of point forces in the two-dimensional Poisson equation

A comparatively simple procedure is presented for the direct summation of the velocity field introduced by point vortices which significantly reduces the required number of operations by replacing selected partial sums by asymptotic series. Tables are presented which demonstrate the speed of this algorithm in terms of the mere doubling of computational time in dealing with a doubling of the number of vortices; current methods involve a computational time extension by a factor of 4. This procedure need not be restricted to the solution of the Poisson equation, and may be applied to other problems involving groups of points in which the interaction between elements of different groups can be simplified when the distance between groups is sufficiently great.

Toughness properties of a three-dimensional carbon-epoxy composite

The three-dimensional (3D) orthogonal interlocked fabric contains through-the-thickness reinforcement in order to enhance the interlaminar fracture toughness of the composite. The interlaminar fracture toughness of a carbon-epoxy orthogonal interlocked fabric composite was experimentally determined by use of the recently developed tabbed double cantilever beam specimen. The data reduction methods applicable to these tests and materials and the interpretation of the results were discussed. The results of critical strain energy release rate, G(IC), were compared to those of a two-dimensional (2D) laminate having the same in-plane structure. The energy-dissipating crack propagation processes were described. The in-plane fracture toughness of the three-dimensional fabric was experimentally measured and compared to that of the two-dimensional laminate. The through-the-thickness fibers were found to create a tenfold increase in interlaminar toughness, and a 25-percent improvement in the in-plane fracture toughness.
