Superluminal matter waves

The Dirac equation has resided among the greatest successes of modern physics since its emergence as the first quantum mechanical theory fully compatible with special relativity. This compatibility ensures that the expectation value of the velocity is less than the vacuum speed of light. Here, we show that the Dirac equation admits free-particle solutions where the peak amplitude of the wave function can travel at any velocity, including those exceeding the vacuum speed of light, despite having a subluminal velocity expectation value. The solutions are constructed by superposing basis functions with correlations in momentum space. These arbitrary velocity wave functions feature a near-constant profile and may impact quantum mechanical processes that are sensitive to the local value of the probability density as opposed to expectation values.

Relativistic density functional theory in the full potential linear muffin tin orbital method

In this write-up, we have outlined the general methodology for treating relativity in the FP-LMTO method. The Schrodinger equation is insufficient for describing the physics of heavy elements because it leaves out any relativistic effects. Therefore DFT based on the Schrodinger equation is not sufficient for studying heavy materials. It is, however, possible to incorporate all of the effects of relativity in DFT if starting with a reformulation of the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem that proceeds from the Dirac equation, rather than the Schrodinger equation. The corresponding theorem in relativistic density functional theory (RDFT) shows that the ground-state density of the system is a functional of not only the charge density as in Schrodinger-based DFT, but also of the current density. This leads to a more elaborate procedure in practice when solving the Dirac-Kohn-Sham equations, the relativistic analogs of the Kohn-Sham equations.

Room‐Temperature Skyrmion Thermopower in Fe 3 Sn 2

Abstract We present the room‐temperature thermoelectric signature of skyrmion bubbles. This is observed in Fe 3 Sn 2 , a Kagome Dirac crystal with massive Dirac fermions that features a high‐temperature skyrmion phase. The room‐temperature skyrmion bubbles show magnetic‐field dependence of the wavevector whereas the thermopower is dominated by the electronic diffusion mechanism, allowing for the skyrmionic bubble detection. The results pave the way for future skyrmion‐based devices based on the manipulation of the thermal gradient.

Magnetic Topological Semimetal Phase with Electronic Correlation Enhancement in SmSbTe

The ZrSiS family of compounds hosts various exotic quantum phenomena due to the presence of both topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. In this material family, the LnSbTe (Ln = lanthanide) compounds are particularly interesting owing to the intrinsic magnetism from magnetic Ln which leads to new properties and quantum states. Here in this work, the authors focus on the previously unexplored compound SmSbTe. The studies reveal a rare combination of a few functional properties in this material, including antiferromagnetism with possible magnetic frustration, electron correlation enhancement, and Dirac nodal-line fermions. These properties enable SmSbTe as a unique platform to explore exotic quantum phenomena and advanced functionalities arising from the interplay between magnetism, topology, and electronic correlations.

$t\overline{t}t\overline{t}$ signatures through the lens of color-octet scalars

We reinterpret two recent LHC searches for events containing four top quarks ($t\overline{t}t\overline{t}$) in the context of supersymmetric models with Dirac gauginos and color-octet scalars (sgluons). We explore whether sgluon contributions to the four-top production cross section σ ($pp$ → $t\overline{t}t\overline{t}$) can accommodate an excess of four-top events recently reported by the ATLAS collaboration. We also study constraints on these models from an ATLAS search for new phenomena with high jet multiplicity and significant missing transverse energy ($E^{miss}_{T}$) sensitive to signals with four top quarks. We find that these two analyses provide complementary constraints, with the jets + $E^{miss}_{T}$ search exceeding the four-top cross section measurement in sensitivity for sgluons heavier than about 800 GeV. We ultimately find that either a scalar or a pseudoscalar sgluon can currently fit the ATLAS excess in a range of reasonable benchmark scenarios, though a pseudoscalar in minimal Dirac gaugino models is ruled out. We finally offer sensitivity projections for these analyses at the HL-LHC, mapping the 5σ discovery potential in sgluon parameter space and computing exclusion limits at 95% CL in scenarios where no excess is found.

Parity solution to the strong CP problem and a unified framework for inflation, baryogenesis, and dark matter

It has been known for some time that asymptotic parity invariance of weak interactions can provide a solution to the strong CP problem without the need for the axion. Left-right symmetric theories which employ a minimal Higgs sector consisting of a left-handed and a right-handed doublet is an example of such a theory wherein all fermion masses arise through a generalized seesaw mechanism. In this paper we present a way to understand the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry as well as the dark matter content of the universe in these theories using the Affleck-Dine (AD) leptogenesis mechanism and inflaton decay, respectively. Three gauge singlet fermions are needed for this purpose, two of which help to implement the Dirac seesaw for neutrino masses while the third one becomes the non-thermal dark matter candidate. A soft lepton number breaking term involving the AD scalar field is used to generate lepton asymmetry which suffers no wash-out effects and maintains the Dirac nature of neutrinos. This framework thus provides a unified description of many of the unresolved puzzles of the standard model that require new physics.

Dressed vs. pairwise states, and the geometric phase of monopoles and charges

We construct the Faddeev-Kulish dressed multiparticle states of electrically and magnetically charged particles, incorporating the effects of real and virtual soft photons. We calculate the properties of such dressed states under Lorentz transformations, and find that they can be identified with the pairwise multi-particle states that transform under the pairwise little group. The shifts in the dressing factors under Lorentz transformations are finite and have a simple geometric interpretation. Using the transformation properties of the dressed states we also present a novel, fully quantum field theoretic derivation of the geometric (Berry) phase obtained by an adiabatic rotation of the Dirac string, and also of the Dirac quantization condition. For half integer pairwise helicity, we show that these multiparticle states have flipped spin-statistics, reproducing the surprising fact that fermions can be made out of bosons.

Leptonic sum rules from flavour models with modular symmetries

Sum rules in the lepton sector provide an extremely valuable tool to classify flavour models in terms of relations between neutrino masses and mixing parameters testable in a plethora of experiments. In this manuscript we identify new leptonic sum rules arising in models with modular symmetries with residual symmetries. These models simultaneously present neutrino mass sum rules, involving masses and Majorana phases, and mixing sum rules, connecting the mixing angles and the Dirac CP-violating phase. The simultaneous appearance of both types of sum rules leads to some non-trivial interplay, for instance, the allowed absolute neutrino mass scale exhibits a dependence on the Dirac CP-violating phase. We derive analytical expressions for these novel sum rules and present their allowed parameter ranges as well as their predictions at upcoming neutrino experiments.

Index-like theorem for massless fermions in spherically symmetric monopole backgrounds

In this paper we study massless fermions coupled to spherically symmetric SU(N) monopoles without Yukawa couplings between the Higgs and fermion fields. The corresponding Dirac operator is not Fredholm and the associated eigenfunctions are not L 2 -normalizable. Here we derive a formula for the dimension of the plane-wave normalizable kernel of such a Dirac operator for fermions of any representation of SU(N) in the presence of any spherically symmetric monopole background. Notably, our results also apply to fermions coupled to monopoles that preserve non-abelian gauge symmetry.

Search for heavy neutral leptons in final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) of Majorana or Dirac type using proton-proton collision data at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV is presented. The data were collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. Events with three charged leptons (electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons) are selected, corresponding to HNL production in association with a charged lepton and decay of the HNL to two charged leptons and a standard model (SM) neutrino. The search is performed for HNL masses between 10 GeV and 1.5 TeV. No evidence for an HNL signal is observed in data. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are found for the squared coupling strength of the HNL to SM neutrinos, considering exclusive coupling of the HNL to a single SM neutrino generation, for both Majorana and Dirac HNLs. The limits exceed previously achieved experimental constraints for a wide range of HNL masses, and the limits on tau neutrino coupling scenarios with HNL masses above the W boson mass are presented for the first time.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Vacuum stability in inert higgs doublet model with right-handed neutrinos

We analyze the vacuum stability in the inert Higgs doublet extension of the Standard Model (SM), augmented by right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) to explain neutrino masses at tree level by the seesaw mechanism. We make a comparative study of the high- and low-scale seesaw scenarios and the effect of the Dirac neutrino Yukawa couplings on the stability of the Higgs potential. Bounds on the scalar quartic couplings and Dirac Yukawa couplings are obtained from vacuum stability and perturbativity considerations. These bounds are found to be relevant only for low-scale seesaw scenarios with relatively large Yukawa couplings. The regions corresponding to stability, metastability and instability of the electroweak vacuum are identified. These theoretical constraints give a very predictive parameter space for the couplings and masses of the new scalars and RHNs which can be tested at the LHC and future colliders. The lightest non-SM neutral CP-even/odd scalar can be a good dark matter candidate and the corresponding collider signatures are also predicted for the model.

Spinor representations for fields with any spin: Lorentz tensor basis for operators and covariant multipole decomposition

This paper discusses a framework to parametrize and decompose operator matrix elements for particles with higher spin (j > 1/2) using chiral representations of the Lorentz group, i.e. the (j, 0) and (0, j) representations and their parity-invariant direct sum. Unlike traditional approaches that require imposing constraints to eliminate spurious degrees of freedom, these chiral representations contain exactly the 2j + 1 components needed to describe a spin-j particle. The central objects in the construction are the t-tensors, which are generalizations of the Pauli four-vector σ μ for higher spin. For the generalized spinors of these representations, we demonstrate how the algebra of the t-tensors allows to formulate a generalization of the Dirac matrix basis for any spin. For on-shell bilinears, we show that a set consisting exclusively of covariant multipoles of order 0 ≤ m ≤ 2j forms a complete basis. We provide explicit expressions for all bilinears of the generalized Dirac matrix basis, which are valid for any spin value. As a byproduct of our derivations we present an efficient algorithm to compute the t-tensor matrix elements. The formalism presented here paves the way to use a more unified approach to analyze the non-perturbative QCD structure of hadrons and nuclei across different spin values, with clear physical interpretation of the resulting distributions as covariant multipoles.

A Particle Method for the Multispecies Landau Equation

Abstract The multispecies Landau collision operator describes the two-particle, small scattering angle or grazing collisions in a plasma made up of different species of particles such as electrons and ions. Recently, a structure preserving deterministic particle method (Carrillo et al. in J. Comput. Phys. 7:100066, 2020) has been developed for the single species spatially homogeneous Landau equation. This method relies on a regularization of the Landau collision operator so that an approximate solution, which is a linear combination of Dirac delta distributions, is well-defined. Based on a weak form of the regularized Landau equation, the time dependent locations of the Dirac delta functions satisfy a system of ordinary differential equations. In this work, we extend this particle method to the multispecies case, and examine its conservation of mass, momentum, and energy, and decay of entropy properties. We show that the equilibrium distribution of the regularized multispecies Landau equation is a Maxwellian distribution, and state a critical condition on the regularization parameters that guarantees a species independent equilibrium temperature. A convergence study comparing an exact multispecies Bobylev-Krook-Wu (BKW) solution to the particle solution shows approximately 2nd order accuracy. Important physical properties such as conservation, decay of entropy, and equilibrium distribution of the particle method are demonstrated with several numerical examples.

Massless charged particles tunneling radiation from a RN-dS horizon and the linear and quadratic GUP

Highlights: • Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). • Reissner–Nordstrom de Sitter (RNdS) spacetime. • Massless charged particles. • Tunneling through cosmological horizon. • Tunneling of spin fields. In this paper, we investigate the massless Reissner–Nordstrom de Sitter metric in the context of minimal length scenarios. We prove not only the confinement of the energy density of massless charged particles, both fermions and bosons, but also their ability to tunnel through the cosmological horizon. These massless particles might be interacting with Dirac sea and in this case they will appear outside the cosmological horizon in the context of dS/CFT holography. This result may formulate a fundamental reason for the expansion of the Dirac sea. Therefore, a spacetime Big Crunch may occur.

Front propagation formulation for large eddy simulation of turbulent premixed flames

The front propagation formulation (FPF) for large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent premixed flames is presented and discussed. The FPF method adopts a regularized Dirac delta function to minimize the spurious propagation of under-resolved filtered flame fronts in LES, while reproducing the reaction characteristics of premixed flame fronts. Here, the extension of the FPF method to LES and the relation to existing sub-filter combustion models are discussed. An algebraic model for the regularized Dirac delta function is presented and validated using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data for statistically planar premixed flames propagating in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. A posteriori validation for a filtered 1-D planar laminar flame is performed to demonstrate the characteristics of FPF in reproducing the propagation speed and the thickness of the under-resolved flame front. LES of a turbulent Bunsen flame is also performed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

Optimizing shift selection in multilevel Monte Carlo for disconnected diagrams in lattice QCD

The calculation of disconnected diagram contributions to physical signals is a computationally expensive task in Lattice QCD. To extract the physical signal, the trace of the inverse Lattice Dirac operator, a large sparse matrix, must be stochastically estimated. Because the variance of the stochastic estimator is typically large, variance reduction techniques must be employed. Multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) methods reduce the variance of the trace estimator by utilizing a telescoping sequence of estimators. Frequency Splitting is one such method that uses a sequence of inverses of shifted operators to estimate the trace of the inverse lattice Dirac operator, however there is no a priori way to select the shifts that minimize the cost of the multilevel trace estimation. Here we present a sampling and interpolation scheme that is able to predict the variances associated with Frequency Splitting under displacements of the underlying space time lattice. The interpolation scheme is able to predict the variances to high accuracy and therefore chooses shifts that correspond to an approximate minimum of the cost for the trace estimation. We show that Frequency Splitting with the chosen shifts displays significant speedups over multigrid deflation, and that these shifts can be used for multiple configurations within the same ensemble with no penalty to performance.

First-principles study of the topological surface states of α-Sn(111)

α-Sn is on the boundary of a couple of distinct topological phases. It will transform into a topological insulator under a suitable strain. However, a clear picture of its topological surface states (TSSs) is still lacking. Furthermore we perform first-principles calculations on the electronic structure of α-Sn(111) surface to identify its TSSs and reveal their properties. The results show that the presence of valence band reorganizes the TSSs in the inverted sp gap into two Dirac cones. The lower one is in the valence band continuum; the upper one resides in the gap between the valence and conduction bands. We also demonstrate the transformation of the surface states by switching on or off of strain and/or spin-orbit coupling. Without spin-orbit coupling, only the TSSs associated with the lower Dirac cone survive, and they are spin unpolarized. The results are useful for understanding and engineering the topological properties of α-Sn.

Relativistic spin precession in homogeneous background fields

The Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation, which describes the precession of the spin of a charged Dirac particle moving in a homogeneous electromagnetic field, is generalized to include also other homogeneous background fields. The treatment incorporates observable coefficients that govern operators of mass dimensions three through six in the underlying Dirac effective field theory. A relativistic formulation valid in arbitrary inertial frames is obtained. The results are applicable to searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model, including searches for Lorentz and CPT violation.
