The influence of polarization on millimeter wave propagation through rain

The measurement and analysis of the depolarization and attenuation that occur when millimeter wave radio signals propagate through rain are described. Progress was made in three major areas: the processing of recorded 1972 data, acquisition and processing of a large amount of 1973 data, and the development of a new theoretical model to predict rain cross polarization and attenuation. Each of these topics is described in detail along with radio frequency system design for cross polarization measurements.

Calibration of radar data from Apollo 17 and other mission results

An examination was made of radar data on depolarized radar echoes for the general areas of (1) the Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17 landing sites, (2) Ranger 7, 8, and 9 impact sites, and (3) the Surveyor 1, 3, 5, and 7 landing sites. These data were then compared with photographic data. Surveyor 6 was excluded because it landed near the center of the lunar disk where echo data are poor. Three problems concerning the echo data are (1) the frequency distributions of echo strengths from site to site, (2) the areal distribution of echoes, and (3) detailed correlation of echoes with the photographs of the Apollo 17 landing area.

Study of resonance light scattering for remote optical probing

Enhanced scattering and fluorescence processes in the visible and UV were investigated which will enable improved remote measurements of gas properties. The theoretical relationship between scattering and fluorescence from an isolated molecule in the approach to resonance is examined through analysis of the time dependence of re-emitted light following excitation of pulsed incident light. Quantitative estimates are developed for the relative and absolute intensities of fluorescence and resonance scattering. New results are obtained for depolarization of scattering excited by light at wavelengths within a dissociative continuum. The experimental work was performed in two separate facilities. One of these utilizes argon and krypton lasers, single moded by a tilted etalon, and a 3/4 meter double monochromator. This facility was used to determine properties of the re-emission from NO2, I2 and O3 excited by visible light. The second facility involves a narrow-line dye laser, and a 3/4 meter single monochromator. The dye laser produces pulsed light with 5 nsec pulse duration and 0.005 nm spectral width.

The influence of polarization on millimeter wave propagation through rain

The influence of polarization on millimeter wave propagation through rain is investigated. The experimental equipment consisted of a 1.43 km line-of-sight path with 4-foot diameter dual-polarized parabolic reflector antennas at each end. Linearly polarized 17.65 GHz signals were transmitted with the electric field vectors at plus 45 degrees and minus 45 degrees from the vertical. These polarizations were initially chosen to maximize the measured depolarization at any given rainfall rate. Later it was discovered that the cross polarization levels measured with plus or minus 45 degree linearly polarized signals are theoretically the least sensitive to variations in drop canting angle and this choice of polarization reduces the scatter in the data.

The polarizability of diatomic helium

The calculation of the electric dipole polarizability tensor of the He 2 dimer is described, and the results are used in the computation of several dielectric and optical properties of helium gas, at both high (322 K) and low (4 K) temperatures. The properties considered are the second dielectric virial coefficient, the second Kerr virial coefficient, and the depolarization ratio of the integrated intensities for the Raman scattering experiments. The thesis consists of five parts: the polarizability and various properties are defined; the calculation of the polarizability in the long-range region in terms of a quantum mechanical multipole expansion is described; the calculation of the He2 polarizability in the overlap region via coupled Hartree-Fock perturbation theory is described; the calculation of the quantum pair distribution function for both the He-3 and He-4 isotopes at 4 K is discussed; and the calculated values of the properties of helium gas are given.

High-resolution radar maps of the lunar surface at 3.8-cm wavelength

The entire earth-facing lunar surface has been mapped at a resolution of 2 km using the 3.8-cm radar of Haystack Observatory. The observations yield the distribution of the relative radar backscattering efficiency with an accuracy of about 10% for both the polarized (primarily quasi-specular or coherent) and depolarized (diffuse or incoherent) scattered components. The results show a variety of discrete radar features, many of which are correlated with craters or other features of optical photographs. Particular interest, however, attaches to those features with substantially different ratio and optical contrast. An anomaly near 63 degrees is noted in the mean angular scattering law obtained from a summary of the radar data.

Atlas of lunar radar maps at 70-cm wavelength

The intensity distribution of lunar radar echoes has been mapped for two-thirds of the earth-visible lunar surface at a wavelength of 70 cm. The depolarizing effects of the lunar surface were observed by simultaneously receiving the radar echoes in opposite polarizations. These echoes were mapped with areal resolutions of 25-100 sq km. Mapping with this resolution confirmed that the young craters have enhanced returns. A few craters were found to have enhanced echoes only from their rims. Backscattering differences were also observed between various areas within a mare, between different highland areas, and between maria and adjacent highlands. These scattering differences were interpreted with a simple model, which assumed that the surface backscattered with varying amounts of quasi-specular and diffuse power. Only an increase in the diffuse power was needed to give the numerical values of the enhancements.

Individual pulse polarization properties of three pulsars

Both average and individual pulse polarization measurements at 430 MHz are presented for three pulsars: PSR 0823 + 26, PSR 0834 + 06, and PSR 2303 + 30. In each case, the average Stokes parameter waveformes are found to depend on the individual pulse polarization properties in a complicated manner. The average waveforms are in general depolarized by pulse-to-pulse fluctuations in polarization state at a given longitude. Two of the three objects exhibit variations of both linear and circular polarization which are associated with quasi-periodic subpulse modulation phenomena in a manner similar to that reported for linear polarization in PSR 0809 + 74 by Taylor et al. (1971.).

Electrochemical carbon dioxide concentrator subsystem math model

A steady state computer simulation model has been developed to describe the performance of a total six man, self-contained electrochemical carbon dioxide concentrator subsystem built for the space station prototype. The math model combines expressions describing the performance of the electrochemical depolarized carbon dioxide concentrator cells and modules previously developed with expressions describing the performance of the other major CS-6 components. The model is capable of accurately predicting CS-6 performance over EDC operating ranges and the computer simulation results agree with experimental data obtained over the prediction range.

Hydrogen detection study

The effectiveness was assessed of a hydrogen (H2) detection concept for regenerative environmental control life support systems (EC/LSS). The concept evaluated was that utilized for the electrochemical depolarized concentrator (EDC) design, constructed, and tested for the EC/LSS space station prototype program. The EDC contains combustible gas detectors (CGDs) which were evaluated with H2. The CGDs were evaluated for linearity, position sensitivity, reproducibility, ambient effects, repeatability, speed of response, recovery time, and interchangeability. The effectiveness of CGDs located within the EDC for sensing H2 leaks at various line replaceable units in the subsystem was determined. The effects of H2 leak rate, H2 concentration of leaking gas and air currents in the vicinity of the EDC were determined. Proposed improvements for the H2 detection concept were documented and alternative H2 detection approaches were identified and analyzed.

The influence of polarization on millimeter wave propagation through rain

The limitations which precipitation depolarization will place on future millimeter wave earth-satellite communications systems employing orthogonal-polarization frequency sharing was studied and the possibility of improving the fade resistance of such systems either through polarization diversity operation or by the choice of the polarization(s) least subject to attenuation was examined. Efforts were confined largely to ground-based communications systems investigated during a twenty-seven month period. Plans to extend the theoretical results to satellite systems are discussed.

One man electrochemical air revitalization system

An integrated water vapor electrolysis (WVE) hydrogen depolarized CO2 concentrator (HDC) system sized for one man support over a wide range of inlet air conditions was designed, fabricated, and tested. Data obtained during 110 days of testing verified that this system can provide the necessary oxygen, CO2 removal, and partial humidity control to support one man (without exceeding a cabin partial pressure of 3.0 mmHg for CO2 and while maintaining a 20% oxygen level), when operated at a WVE current of 50 amperes and an HDC current of 18 amperes. An evaluation to determine the physical properties of tetramethylammonium bicarbonate (TMAC) and hydroxide was made. This provides the necessary electrolyte information for designing an HDC cell using TMAC.

Twenty and thirty GHz millimeter wave experiments with the ATS-6 satellite

The ATS-6 millimeter wave experiment, provided the first direct measurements of 20 and 30 GHz earth-space links from an orbiting satellite. Studies at eleven locations in the continental United States were directed at an evaluation of rain attenuation effects, scintillations, depolarization, site diversity, coherence bandwidth, and analog and digital communications techniques. In addition to direct measurements on the 20 and 30 GHz links, methods of attenuation prediction with radars, rain gages, and radiometers were developed and compared with the directly measured attenuation. Initial data results of the ATS-6 millimeter wave experiment from the major participating organizations are presented.

Formation of the muonic helium atom /alpha particle-muon-electron/ and observation of its Larmor precession

Experiments are described in which it proved possible to form the muonic helium atom by stopping polarized negative muons in a helium gas with a 2% xenon admixture at a pressure of 14 atm. The observed Larmor precession amplitudes are plotted against the gyromagnetic ratio for both muons and antimuons stopped in He + 2% Xe. In addition, a non-zero residual polarization of 0.06 plus or minus 0.01 was measured for muons stopped in pure helium gas, which corresponds to a depolarization factor of 18 plus or minus 3.

Study of the brightness and polarization structure of extragalactic radio sources

The brightness and linear-polarization structure of 19 extended extragalactic radio sources are determined at a frequency of 10.7 GHz. Compact components with self-absorption spectra coincident with the nucleus of an associated galaxy are fairly common, while many sources display regions of high-percentage polarization, sometimes greater than 40%. Comparison of our results with other studies, all at lower frequencies (generally not exceeding 5 GHz), has yielded information on spectra, depolarization rates, and Faraday rotation of the polarization plane in various source regions. At least four distinct classes of extragalactic radio sources are identified. These classes form a sequence along which the prominence of the compact central component declines relative to that of the extended outer regions, while those outer regions become more ordered in their structure and assume specific polarization characteristics. It is suggested that this sequence is in fact an evolutionary sequence.

Effects of pharmacological agents on subcortical resistance shifts

Microliter quantities of tetrodotoxin, tetraethylammonium chloride, and picrotoxin injected into the inferior colliculus and superior olive of unanesthetized cats differentially affect the amplitude and waveform of click-evoked potentials and evoked resistance shifts. Tetrodotoxin simultaneously reduces the negative phase of the evoked potential and eliminates the evoked resistance shift. Tetraethylammonium enhances the negative evoked potential component, presumably of postsynaptic origin, without significantly altering evoked resistance shift amplitude. Picrotoxin also enhances the negative evoked potential wave but increases evoked resistance shift amplitude. These findings implicate events associated with postsynaptic membrane depolarization in the production of the evoked resistance shift.

Electrochemical air revitalization system optimization investigation

A program to characterize a Breadboard of an Electrochemical Air Revitalization System (BEARS) was successfully completed. The BEARS is composed of three components: (1) a water vapor electrolysis module (WVEM) for O2 production and partial humidity control, (2) an electrochemical depolarized carbon dioxide concentrator module (EDCM) for CO2 control, and (3) a power-sharing controller, designed to utilize the power produced by the EDCM to partially offset the WVEM power requirements. It is concluded from the results of this work that the concept of electrochemical air revitalization with power-sharing is a viable solution to the problem of providing a localized topping force for O2 generation, CO2 removal and partial humidity control aboard manned spacecraft. Continued development of the EARS concept is recommended, applying the operational experience and limits identified during the BEARS program to testing of a one-man capacity system and toward the development of advanced system controls to optimize EARS operation for given interfaces and requirements. Successful completion of this development will produce timely technology necessary to plan future advanced environmental control and life support system programs and experiments.
