Experiments in Contact Control

The implementation, experimentation, and application of contact control schemes for a 7-DOF Robotics Research arm is presented. Three types of control schemes are presented: compliance cntrol, force control, and dual-mode control. This presentation is concluded with the application of the proposed schemes to perform a contact-based eddy-current inspection task.

Minimal Coordinate Formulation of Contact Dynamics in Operational Space

In recent years, complementarity techniques have been developed for modeling non-smooth contact and collision dynamics problems for multi-link robotic systems. Normally, in this approach, a linear complementarity problem (LCP) is set up using 6n non-minimal coordinates for a system with n links together with all the unilateral constraints and inter-link bilateral constraints on the system. In this paper, we use operational space dynamics to develop a complementarity formulation for contact and collision dynamics that uses minimal coordinates. The use of such non-redundant coordinates results in much smaller size LCP problems and the automatic enforcement of the inter-link bilateral constraints. Furthermore, we exploit operational space low-order computational algorithms to overcome some of the bottlenecks in using minimal coordinates.

Using Holey Graphene for Improved Interfacial Contact in Solid Electrolyte Ionic Conductivity Measurements

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are poised to become the batteries of the future with advantages such as higher energy density, lighter weight, versatile geometry, and greater safety due to low flammability risk. An important parameter of the solid electrolyte (SE) used is its ionic conductivity. The ionic conductivity is generally calculated from the bulk resistance of a SE pellet, measured from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data. The SE pellet is typically prepared from the electrolyte powder by dry compression and is sandwiched between two blocking current collectors to obtain the impedance spectroscopy data. One of the challenges in conducting this measurement is poor interfacial contacts between the SE pellet and the current collector surfaces. Therefore, measurements reported in the literature may underestimate the true ionic conductivity of a given electrolyte. Holey graphene is a carbon nanomaterial with high electrical conductivity and unique dry compressibility, which is unusual for carbon materials but similar to many oxide and sulfide SEs. In this work, it is demonstrated that adding a thin layer of holey graphene between the electrolyte and the stainless steel current collectors significantly improves the interfacial contact. The ionic conductivity values obtained in the effort were sometimes several times higher than the data measured for SEs without the holey graphene layers. This work calls for more standardized measurement procedures to reduce the discrepancies in reported ionic conductivity values.

Contact stresses calculated for miniature slip rings

Using mathematical formulations to plot the graphs of the contact preload versus the Hertzian load, calculations of unit loading of the preloaded brushes on slip rings can be made. This optimizes the design of contact brushes and miniature slip rings.

Thin film process forms effective electrical contacts on semiconductor crystals

Process makes microscopic, low-resistance electrical contacts on hexagonal n-type silicon carbide crystals used for microelectronic devices. A vacuum deposition of aluminum is etched to expose the bare silicon carbide where the electrical contacts are made. Sputtering alternating layers of tantalum and gold forms the alloy film.

Miniature intermittent contact switch

Design of electric switch for providing intermittent contact is presented. Switch consists of flexible conductor surrounding, but separated from, fixed conductor. Flexing of outside conductor to contact fixed conductor completes circuit. Advantage is small size of switch compared to standard switches.
