User-Centric Communication With Aerial Network for 6G: A Reinforcement Learning Approach

Meeting the diverse needs of user verticals requires innovative cellular architectures that can offer additional degrees of freedom to provide on-demand services. The terrestrial user-centric radio access network (UC-RAN) stands out as an excellent choice for this purpose. However, a drawback of UC-RAN is its tendency to prioritize high-priority verticals, often resulting in a subpar quality of experience for low-priority verticals. This issue is particularly exacerbated in hotspot areas. Here, to address this problem, we introduce an aerial network integrated with terrestrial UC-RAN to provide coverage to users which are not served by the terrestrial network. Furthermore, we analyze the impact of key configuration and optimization parameters (COPs), such as location, transmit power, altitude, and beamwidth of aerial base stations (ABSs) on system key performance indicators (KPIs), such as coverage, latency satisfaction, average spectral efficiency, and energy efficiency. We formulate a robust multiobjective function to maximize these KPIs without biasing toward any specific KPI(s). Finally, we propose a deep reinforcement learning optimization framework based on the state-of-the-art soft actor-critic algorithm to control ABS COPs and optimize system KPIs. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that the proposed optimization framework can converge to near-optimal solutions derived from the pseudo brute force in a few thousand epochs.

HAM: Hotspot-Aware Manager for Improving Communications with 3D-Stacked Memory

merging High-Performance Computing (HPC) workloads, such as graph analytics, machine learning, and big data science, are data-intensive. Data-intensive workloads usually present fine-grained memory accesses with limited or no data locality, and thus incur frequent cache misses and low utilization of memory bandwidth. 3D-stacked memory devices such as Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC) and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) can provide significantly higher bandwidth than conventional memory modules. However, the traditional interfaces and optimization methods for JEDEC DDR devices do not allow to fully exploit the potential performance of 3D-stacked memory with the massive amount of irregular memory accesses of data-intensive applications. In this paper, we propose a novel Hotspot-Aware Manager (HAM) infrastructure for 3D-stacked memory devices capable of optimizing memory access streams via request aggregation, hotspot detection, and in-memory prefetching. %and an associated hotspot-aware page policy. We present the HAM design and implementation, and simulate it on a system using RISC-V embedded cores with attached HMC devices. We extensively evaluate HAM with over 12 benchmarks and applications representing diverse irregular memory access patterns. The results show that, on average, HAM reduces redundant requests by 37.51\% and increases the prefetch buffer hit rate by 4.2 times, compared to a baseline streaming prefetcher. On the selected benchmark set, HAM provides performance gains of 21.81\% in average (up to 34.28\%) and power savings of 35.07\% over a standard 3D-stacked memory.

Local Communication in Populations of Thermostatically Controlled Loads

Thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) have shown great potential for demand response (DR) in electric grid operations. However, it has been commonly seen that DR events using TCLs may cause load synchronization and unwanted oscillatory effects, especially in homogeneous populations. In an attempt to mitigate the negative impacts of DR events, a decentralized method is proposed that modifies each thermostat behavior based on the activity of a small number of nearby TCLs. This feedback introduces the possibility of instability in the aggregate behavior. A stability analysis is performed on a linearized model of the aggregate system and the results of that analysis compared to simulation results. The proposed modification of thermostat behavior results in fourfold reduction in the post-DR peak while suppressing ensuing oscillations at the expense of a modest increase in compressor cycling. Further, the linearized model also provides insight into the aggregate behavior of the population.

Soil organic matter attenuates the efficacy of flavonoid-based plant-microbe communication

Plant-microbe interactions are mediated by signaling compounds that control vital plant functions, such as nodulation, defense, and allelopathy. While interruption of signaling is typically attributed to biological processes, potential abiotic controls remain less studied. Here, we show that higher organic carbon (OC) contents in soils repress flavonoid signals by up to 70%. Furthermore, the magnitude of repression is differentially dependent on the chemical structure of the signaling molecule, the availability of metal ions, and the source of the plant-derived OC. Up to 63% of the signaling repression occurs between dissolved OC and flavonoids rather than through flavonoid sorption to particulate OC. In plant experiments, OC interrupts the signaling between a legume and a nitrogen-fixing microbial symbiont, resulting in a 75% decrease in nodule formation. Our results suggest that soil OC decreases the lifetime of flavonoids underlying plant-microbe interactions.

Qompress: Efficient Compilation for Ququarts Exploiting Partial and Mixed Radix Operations for Communication Reduction

Quantum computing is in an era of limited resources. Current hardware lacks high fidelity gates, long coherence times, and the number of computational units required to perform meaningful computation. Contemporary quantum devices typically use a binary system, where each qubit exists in a superposition of the 0 and 1 states. Furthermore, it is often possible to access the 2 or even 3 states in the same physical unit by manipulating the system in different ways. In this work, we consider automatically encoding two qubits into one four-state ququart via a compression scheme. We use quantum optimal control to design efficient proof-of-concept gates that fully replicate standard qubit computation on these encoded qubits.

Communication—Dissolution and Passivation of a Ni-Cr-Fe-Ru-Mo-W High Entropy Alloy by Elementally Resolved Electrochemistry

The formation and dissolution of the passive film on a novel NiCrFeRuMoW high entropy alloy in H 2 SO 4 was measured with atomic emission spectroelectrochemistry. Passivation involved Cr and Ru enrichment, whether passivation was achieved spontaneously at open circuit or by potentiostatic step into the passive domain. The other elements, Ni, Fe, Mo, and W, dissolved at rates approximately proportional to their bulk concentrations. The air formed film showed only a Cr enrichment. Excellent corrosion resistance properties were indicated by spontaneous passivation, the low passive current in the polarization curve, and the absence of detectable elemental dissolution during the active peak.

Communication—On the Lack of Correlation between the Voltammetric Redox Couple and ORR Activity of Fe-N-C Catalysts

Platinum group metal-free catalysts for polymer electrolyte fuel cells are analyzed in different electrolytes (H 2 SO 4 and HClO 4 ) and at different pH values to gain insight into the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism. Two Fe-N-C type catalysts showing a reversible voltammetric redox couple around 0.77 V vs RHE in HClO 4 electrolyte are investigated. A notable cathodic shift of the redox couple to 0.62 V is observed in H 2 SO 4 and is assigned to bisulfate adsorption. Concurrently, the ORR activity of the catalysts is unaffected, suggesting an independent nature of the reductive mechanism with the redox peak species.

Communication—Impact Behaviors of Pouch and Prismatic Battery Modules

The responses of pouch and prismatic battery modules when they are impacted by two types of indenters from three different directions are investigated experimentally. The test results show that the failure mechanism, peak force and penetration that leads to short-circuit in modules strongly depend on the impact direction, indenter shape, cell form factor and module design. It sheds lights on the abuse tolerance of batteries in different scenarios and demonstrates that the cell type, orientation and module structure should be considered simultaneously in order to improve the battery safety in electrical vehicles.

Communication—Reduction of DC Resistance of Ni-Rich Lithium Transition Metal Oxide Cathode by Atomic Layer Deposition

A coating using Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of Al 2 O 3 was applied to Ni-rich lithium transition metal oxide cathode material. This ALD coating reduces the DC resistance (DCR) and increases the cycling performance of the Ni-rich cathode. Additionally, the reduced DCR comes from decreased solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) resistance on the anode, which is attributed to reduced transition metal deposition. This is due to the ALD coating preventing the direct contact between the cathode and the electrolyte, and therefore inhibits transition metal dissolution. This study suggests the promise of using ALD coating to reduce the DCR of Ni-rich cathode materials.
