Systematic study of short- and long-range correlations in RE 3 TaO 7 weberite-type compounds by neutron total scattering and X-ray diffraction

The atomic structures of the lanthanide tantalates, Ln 3 TaO 7 , series (Ln = Pr, Tb, Dy, Ho, Tm, Yb) were systematically investigated using total scattering techniques. High-energy X-ray and neutron diffraction analysis revealed that the long-range structures can be grouped into three distinct families: (1) ordered Cmcm (Ln = Pr), (2) ordered Ccmm (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho), and (3) disordered, defect-fluorite Fm$\bar{3}$m (Ln = Ho, Tm, Yb). These findings help to clarify the symmetry discrepancy for the already reported long-range structures in the literature. The short-range analysis of neutron total scattering data via pair distribution functions reveals a high degree of structural heterogeneity across length scales for all compounds, with distinct local atomic arrangements that are not fully captured by the average, long-range structure. The short-range structures at the level of coordination polyhedra are better captured by a set of alternative non-centrosymmetric structural models: (1) C2cm, (2) C222 1 , and (3) C2mm. This establishes a short-range multiferroic character for weberite-type tantalates because ferroelectric interactions compete with magnetic correlations. These ferroelectric interactions are particularly pronounced for the disordered compounds Tm 3 TaO 7 and Yb 3 TaO 7 . In conclusion, the structural differences among the three families are the result of changes in TaO 6 polyhedral tilt (transition between families 1 and 2) and dipolar interactions of off-centered Ta cations (transition between families 2 and 3).

Advances in High Energy Solid-State Pulsed 2-Micron Lidar Development for Ground and Airborne Wind, Water Vapor and CO2 Measurements

NASA Langley Research Center has a long history of developing 2-micron lasers. From fundamental spectroscopy research, theoretical prediction of new materials, laser demonstration and engineering of lidar systems, it has been a very successful program spanning around two decades. Successful development of 2-micron lasers has led to development of a state-of-the-art compact lidar transceiver for a pulsed coherent Doppler lidar system for wind measurement with an unprecedented laser pulse energy of 250 millijoules in a rugged package. This high pulse energy is produced by a Ho:Tm:LuLiF laser with an optical amplifier. While the lidar is meant for use as an airborne instrument, ground-based tests were carried out to characterize performance of the lidar. Atmospheric measurements will be presented, showing the lidar's capability for wind measurement in the atmospheric boundary layer and free troposphere. Lidar wind measurements are compared to a balloon sonde, showing good agreement between the two sensors. Similar architecture has been used to develop a high energy, Ho:Tm:YLF double-pulsed 2-micron Integrated Differential Absorption Lidar (IPDA) instrument based on direct detection technique that provides atmospheric column CO2 measurements. This instrument has been successfully used to measure atmospheric CO2 column density initially from a ground mobile lidar trailer, and then it was integrated on B-200 plane and 20 hours of flight measurement were made from an altitude ranging 1500 meters to 8000 meters. These measurements were compared to in-situ measurements and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) airborne flask measurement to derive the dry mixing ratio of the column CO2 by reflecting the signal by various reflecting surfaces such as land, vegetation, ocean surface, snow and sand. The lidar measurements when compared showed a very agreement with in-situ and airborne flask measurement. NASA Langley Research Center is currently developing a triple-pulsed 2-micron Integrated Differential Absorption Lidar (IPDA) instrument for simultaneous measurement of water vapor and carbon-dioxide column density measurement from an air-borne platform. This presentation will give an overview of the 2 decades of 2-micron coherent and direction detection of laser/lidar development at NASA Langley Research Center and will present the ground and airborne wind and column CO2 measurement intercomparison with in-situ, balloon and flask measurements.

Crystal Structures, Optical Behavior, and Magnetic Properties in Hydrated Lanthanide Iron Sulfates

Single crystals of LnFe(SO 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm; compounds 1–11) and LnFe(SO 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) (Ln = Tm, Yb, Lu; compounds 12–14) were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis revealed that the dihydrated compounds (1–11) crystallize in centrosymmetric (CS) structures, with the lanthanide ions adopting eight-coordinate geometries. In contrast, the monohydrated compounds (12–14) exhibit noncentrosymmetric (NCS) structures, where the lanthanide ions are seven-coordinated. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) confirmed that compounds 2, 4, and 7–11 are paramagnetic below 400 K, with compound 8 displaying the highest magnetic susceptibility. Compounds 1, 5, 6, 13, and 14 show a sharp increase in magnetic susceptibility at Néel temperatures ( T N ) of approximately 72, 76, 70, 58, and 56 K, respectively, indicating antiferromagnetic ordering. High-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements further support the presence of antiferromagnetic transitions in these compounds. Second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements showed that the noncentrosymmetric Yb (compound 13) and Lu (compound 14) compounds exhibit SHG intensities of 0.3× and 1.6× that of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP), respectively.

Cooperative Ru(4 d )–Ho(4 f ) magnetic ordering and phase coexistence in the 6 H perovskite multiferroic Ba 3 HoRu 2 O 9

We report cooperative magnetic orderings in a 6H-perovskite multiferroic system, Ba 3 HoRu 2 O 9 , via comprehensive neutron powder diffraction measurements. This system undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at T N1 ~ 50 K with a propagation wave vector of K 1 = (0.5 0 0), a transition temperature much higher than the previously reported one at ~10 K (T N2 ). Both Ru and Ho-moments order simultaneously below T N1 , followed by spin-reorientations at lower temperatures, demonstrating strong Ru(4d)-Ho(4f) magnetic correlation. Below T N1 another magnetic phase with a propagation wave vector K 2 = (0.25 0.25 0) emerges and coexists with the one associated with K 1 , which is rarely observed and suggests complex magnetism due to phase competition in the magnetic ground state. Here, we argue that the exchange-striction arising from the up-up-down-down spin structure associated with K 2 below T N2 may be responsible for the small ferroelectric polarization reported previously in this compound.
