Atmospheric Characterization and Further Orbital Modeling of κ Andromeda b

We present κ Andromeda b's photometry and astrometry taken with Subaru/SCExAO+HiCIAO and Keck/NIRC2, combined with recently published SCExAO/CHARIS low-resolution spectroscopy and published thermal infrared photometry to further constrain the companion's atmospheric properties and orbit. The Y/Y−K colors of κ And b are redder than field dwarfs, consistent with its youth and lower gravity. Empirical comparisons of its Y-band photometry and CHARIS spectrum to a large spectral library of isolated field dwarfs reaffirm the conclusion from Currie et al. that it likely has a low gravity but admit a wider range of most plausible spectral types (L0–L2). Our gravitational classification also suggests that the best-fit objects for κ And b may have lower gravity than those previously reported. Atmospheric models lacking dust/clouds fail to reproduce its entire 1–4.7 μm spectral energy distribution (SED), and cloudy atmosphere models with temperatures of ~1700–2000 K better match κ And b data. Most well-fitting model comparisons favor 1700–1900 K, a surface gravity of log(g) ~ 4–4.5, and a radius of 1.3–1.6 R (sub Jup); the best-fit model (Drift-Phoenix) yields the coolest and lowest-gravity values: T (sub eff) = 1700 K and log g = 4.0. An update to κ And b's orbit with ExoSOFT using new astrometry spanning 7 yr reaffirms its high eccentricity (0.77 ± 0.08). We consider a scenario where unseen companions are responsible for scattering κ And b to a wide separation and high eccentricity. If three planets, including κ And b, were born with coplanar orbits, and one of them was ejected by gravitational scattering, a potential inner companion with mass ≲10 M (sub Jup) could be located at ≲25 au.

SOLES XII. The Aligned Orbit of TOI-2533 b, a Transiting Brown Dwarf Orbiting an F8-type Star

Brown dwarfs occupy a middle ground in mass space between gaseous giant planets and ultracool dwarf stars, and the characterisation of their orbital orientations may shed light on how these neighbouring objects form. We present an analysis of the Rossiter–McLaughlin effect across the transit of TOI-2533 b, a brown dwarf on a moderately eccentric (e b = 0.2476 ± 0.0090) and wide-separation (a b /R ⋆ = 13.34 ± 0.30) orbit around an F8-type star, using data from the NEID/WIYN spectrograph in combination with archival photometry and radial velocity observations. Spin-orbit analyses of brown dwarfs are relatively rare, and TOI-2533 stands out as the fifth brown dwarf system with a measured spin–orbit constraint. We derive a sky-projected stellar obliquity of λ = −7° ± 14° for TOI-2533 b, finding that the brown dwarf is consistent with spin–orbit alignment. Our joint model also indicates that TOI-2533 b falls near the lower bound of the hydrogen-burning minimum mass range (M b = 74.9 ± 5.3 M Jup ). Ultimately, we find that TOI-2533 b is consistent with formation from disc fragmentation in a primordially spin–orbit aligned orientation, although we cannot rule out the possibility that the system has been tidally realigned during its lifetime.

High-pressure response of vibrational properties of b-As x P 1– x : in situ Raman studies

The structural evolution of black arsenic-phosphorous (b-As x P 1–x ) alloys with varying arsenic concentrations was investigated under hydrostatic pressure using in situ Raman spectroscopy. High-pressure experiments were conducted using a diamond anvil cell, which revealed pressure-induced shifts in vibrational modes associated with P–P bonds (A 1 g , A 2 g , ${B}_{2g}$), As–As bonds (A 1 g , A 2 g , ${{B}}_{2g}$), and As–P bonds in b-As x P 1–x alloys. Two distinct pressure regimes were observed. In the first regime (region I), all vibrational modes exhibited a monotonic upshift, indicating phonon hardening due to hydrostatic pressure. In the second regime (region II), As 0.4 P 0.6 and As 0.6 P 0.4 alloys displayed a linear blueshift (or negligible change in some modes) at a reduced rate, suggesting local structural reorganization with less compression on the bonds. Notably, the alloy with the highest As concentration, As 0.8 P 0.2 , exhibited anomalous behavior in the second pressure regime, with a downward shift observed in all As–As and As–P Raman modes (and some P–P modes). Interestingly, the emergence of new peaks corresponding to the E g mode and A 1g mode of the gray-As phase was observed in this pressure range, indicating compressive strain-induced structural changes. The anomalous change in region II confirms the formation of a new local structure, characterized by elongation of the P–P, As–As, and As–P bonds along the zigzag direction within the b-As x P 1–x phase, possibly near the grain boundary. Additionally, a gray-As phase undergoes compressive structural changes. This study underscores the significance of pressure in inducing structural transformations and exploring novel phases in two-dimensional materials, including b-As x P 1–x alloys.

Measurement of C P asymmetries in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 decays at Belle II

We report a measurement of decay-time-dependent charge-parity ( C P ) asymmetries in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 decays. We use 387 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. We reconstruct 220 signal events and extract the C P -violating parameters S and C from a fit to the distribution of the decay-time difference between the two B mesons. The resulting confidence region is consistent with previous measurements in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 and B 0 → ( c c ¯ ) K 0 decays and with predictions based on the standard model. Search for heavy resonances decaying into a Z or W boson and a Higgs boson in final states with leptons and b -jets in 139 fb –1 of pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This article presents a search for new resonances decaying into a Z or W boson and a 125 GeV Higgs boson h, and it targets the $ν\bar{ν}b\bar{b}, l^{+} l^{-} b\bar{b}$, or $ll^{±} νb\bar{b}$ final states, where $\ell$ = e or µ, in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The data used correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 collected by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the LHC at CERN. The search is conducted by examining the reconstructed invariant or transverse mass distributions of Zh or W h candidates for evidence of a localised excess in the mass range from 220 GeV to 5 TeV. No significant excess is observed and 95% confidence-level upper limits between 1.3 pb and 0.3 fb are placed on the production cross section times branching fraction of neutral and charged spin-1 resonances and CP-odd scalar bosons. These limits are converted into constraints on the parameter space of the Heavy Vector Triplet model and the two-Higgs-doublet model.

A first search for the lepton-flavour violating decays B 0 → K*0 τ ± μ ∓ is presented. The analysis is performed using a sample of proton-proton collision data, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 . No significant signal is observed, and upper limits on the branching fractions are determined to be B (B 0 → K* 0 τ + μ – ) < 1.0(1.2) x 10 –5 and B(B 0 → K* 0 τ – μ + ) < 8.2(9.8) x 10 –6 at the 90% (95%) confidence level.

Search for a light charged Higgs boson in t → H±b decays, with H± → cb, in the lepton+jets final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for a charged Higgs boson, H ± , produced in top-quark decays, t → H ± b, is presented. The search targets H ± decays into a bottom and a charm quark, H ± → cb. The analysis focuses on a selection enriched in top-quark pair production, where one top quark decays into a leptonically decaying W boson and a bottom quark, and the other top quark decays into a charged Higgs boson and a bottom quark. This topology leads to a lepton-plus-jets final state, characterised by an isolated electron or muon and at least four jets. The search exploits the high multiplicity of jets containing b-hadrons, and deploys a neural network classifier that uses the kinematic differences between the signal and the background. The search uses a dataset of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018 with the ATLAS detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits between 0.15% (0.09%) and 0.42% (0.25%) are derived for the product of branching fractions $\mathscr{B}$ (t → H ± b) × $\mathscr{B}$(H ± → cb) for charged Higgs boson masses between 60 and 160 GeV, assuming the SM production of the top-quark pairs.

Search for pair-produced higgsinos decaying via Higgs or Z bosons to final states containing a pair of photons and a pair of b -jets with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for the pair production of higgsinos $\tilde{X}$ in gauge-mediated supersymmetry models, where the lightest neutralinos $\tilde{X}^{0}_{1}$ decay into a light gravitino $\tilde{G}$ in association with either a Higgs h or a Z boson. The search is performed with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider using 139 fb -1 of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13TeV. It targets final states in which a Higgs boson decays into a photon pair, while the other Higgs or Z boson decays into a $b\overline{b}$ pair, with missing transverse momentum associated with the two gravitinos. Search regions dependent on the amount of missing transverse momentum are defined by the requirements that the diphoton mass should be consistent with the mass of the Higgs boson, and the $b\overline{b}$ mass with the mass of the Higgs or Z boson. The main backgrounds are estimated with data-driven methods using the sidebands of the diphoton mass distribution. No excesses beyond Standard Model expectations are observed and higgsinos with masses up to 320 GeV are excluded, assuming a branching fraction of 100% for $\tilde{X}^{0}_{1}$ → h$\tilde{G}$. This analysis excludes higgsinos with masses of 130GeV for branching fractions to h$\tilde{G}$ as low as 36%, thus providing complementarity to previous ATLAS searches in final states with multiple leptons or multiple b-jets, targeting different decays of the electroweak bosons.

The first search for the rare radiative decay $Ξ_b^{-}$ → $Ξ^-γ$ is performed using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb -1 . $Ξ_b^{-}$ → $Ξ^-J/ψ$ channel is used as normalization. No $Ξ_b^{-}$ → $Ξ^-γ$ signal is found and an upper limit of $\mathcal{B}$( $Ξ_b^{-}$ → $Ξ^-γ$) < 1.3 x 10 -4 at 95% confidence level is obtained.

Study of ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → J/ψπ + π – K + K – decays

The decays ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → J/ψπ + π – K + K – are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 , collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The decays ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → $\mathrm{J}/{ψ \mathrm{K}}^{\ast 0}{\overline{\mathrm{K}}}^{\ast 0}$ and ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → χ c1 (3872)K + K – , where the K + K – pair does not originate from a Φ meson, are observed for the first time. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions between intermediate χ c1 (3872)Φ, $\mathrm{J}/{ψ \mathrm{K}}^{\ast 0}{\overline{\mathrm{K}}}^{\ast 0}$, ψ(2S)Φ and χ c1 (3872)K + K – states are reported. A structure, denoted as X(4740), is observed in the J/ψΦ mass spectrum and, assuming a Breit-Wigner parameterisation, its mass and width are determined to be ${\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}{m}_{\mathrm{X}(4740)}=4741\pm 6\pm 6\kern0.5em \mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2,\\ {}{\Gamma}_{\mathrm{X}(4740)}=53\pm 15\pm 11\kern0.5em \mathrm{MeV},\end{array}}$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, the most precise single measurement of the mass of the ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ meson is performed and gives a value of ${m}_{{\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0}=5366.98\pm 0.07\pm 0.13\kern0.5em \mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2.$

Search for the Lepton Flavor Violating Decays B + → K + τ ± ℓ ∓ ( ℓ = e , μ ) at Belle

We present a search for the lepton flavor violating decays B + → K + ⁢$\tau$ ±⁢ ℓ ∓ , with ℓ = (e,μ), using the full data sample of 772×10 6 B$\overline{B}$ pairs recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e - collider. We use events in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. We find no evidence for B ± → K ±⁢ $\tau$⁢ℓ decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions at the 90% confidence level in the (1 - 3) × 10 -5 range. The obtained limits are the world’s best results.

Evidence for Modification of $b$ Quark Hadronization in High-Multiplicity $pp$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The production rate of $B^{0}_{s}$ mesons relative to $B^0$ mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV over the forward rapidity interval 2 < $y$ < 4.5 as a function of the charged particle multiplicity measured in the event. Evidence at the 3.4$σ$ level is found for an increase of the ratio of $B^{0}_{s}$ to $B^0$ cross sections with multiplicity at transverse momenta below 6 GeV /$c$, with no significant multiplicity dependence at higher transverse momentum. Comparison with data from $e^+$ $e^–$ collisions implies that the density of the hadronic medium may affect the production rates of $B$ mesons. This is qualitatively consistent with the emergence of quark coalescence as an additional hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity collisions.

Measurements of the Branching Fraction, Polarization, and C P Asymmetry for the Decay B 0 → ω ω

We present a comprehensive study of B 0 → ω ω decays using 772 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e − collider. This process is a suppressed charmless decay into two vector mesons and can exhibit interesting polarization and C P violation. The decay is observed for the first time with a significance of 7.9 standard deviations. We measure a branching fraction B = ( 1.53 ± 0.29 ± 0.17 ) × 10 − 6 , a fraction of longitudinal polarization f L = 0.87 ± 0.13 ± 0.13 , and a time-integrated C P asymmetry A C P = − 0.44 ± 0.43 ± 0.11 , where the first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first observation of B 0 → ω ω and the first measurements of f L and A C P for this decay. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for supersymmetry in final states with missing transverse momentum and three or more b-jets in 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for supersymmetry involving the pair production of gluinos decaying via off-shell third-generation squarks into the lightest neutralino ($\tilde {χ}_{1}^{0}$) is reported. It exploits LHC proton–proton collision data at a centre-of mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected with the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018. The search uses events containing large missing transverse momentum, up to one electron or muon, and several energetic jets, at least three of which must be identified as containing b-hadrons. Both a simple kinematic event selection and an event selection based upon a deep neural network are used. No significant excess above the predicted background is found. In simplified models involving the pair production of gluinos that decay via off-shell top (bottom) squarks, gluino masses less than 2.44 TeV (2.35 TeV) are excluded at 95% CL for a massless $\tilde {χ}_{1}^{0}$. Limits are also set on the gluino mass in models with variable branching ratios for gluino decays to $b$$\overline{b}$$\tilde {χ}_{1}^{0}$, $t$$\overline{t}$$\tilde {χ}_{1}^{0}$ and $t$$\overline{b}$$\tilde {χ}_{1}^{-}$ / $t$$\overline{b}$$\tilde {χ}_{1}^{+}$.

Extended isogeometric analysis of multi-material and multi-physics problems using hierarchical B-splines

Here, this paper presents an immersed, isogeometric finite element framework to predict the response of multi-material, multi-physics problems with complex geometries using locally refined discretizations. To circumvent the need to generate conformal meshes, this work uses an extended finite element method (XFEM) to discretize the governing equations on non-conforming, embedding meshes. A flexible approach to create truncated hierarchical B-splines discretizations is presented. This approach enables the refinement of each state variable field individually to meet field-specific accuracy requirements. To obtain an immersed geometry representation that is consistent across all hierarchically refined B-spline discretizations, the geometry is immersed into a single mesh, the XFEM background mesh, which is constructed from the union of all hierarchical B-spline meshes. An extraction operator is introduced to represent the truncated hierarchical B-spline bases in terms of Lagrange shape functions on the XFEM background mesh without loss of accuracy. The truncated hierarchical B-spline bases are enriched using a generalized Heaviside enrichment strategy to accommodate small geometric features and multi-material problems. The governing equations are augmented by a formulation of the face-oriented ghost stabilization enhanced for locally refined B-spline bases. We present examples for two- and three-dimensional linear elastic and thermo-elastic problems. The numerical results validate the accuracy of our framework. The results also demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework to large, geometrically complex problems.

High throughput analysis of B cell dynamics and neutralizing antibody development during immunization with a novel clade C HIV-1 envelope

A protective HIV-1 vaccine has been hampered by a limited understanding of how B cells acquire neutralizing activity. Our previous vaccines expressing two different HIV-1 envelopes elicited robust antigen specific serum IgG titers in 20 rhesus macaques; yet serum from only two animals neutralized the autologous virus. Here, we used high throughput immunoglobulin receptor and single cell RNA sequencing to characterize the overall expansion, recall, and maturation of antigen specific B cells longitudinally over 90 weeks. Diversification and expansion of many B cell clonotypes occurred broadly in the absence of serum neutralization. However, in one animal that developed neutralization, two neutralizing B cell clonotypes arose from the same immunoglobulin germline and were tracked longitudinally. Early antibody variants with high identity to germline neutralized the autologous virus while later variants acquired somatic hypermutation and increased neutralization potency. The early engagement of precursors capable of neutralization with little to no SHM followed by prolonged affinity maturation allowed the two neutralizing lineages to successfully persist despite many other antigen specific B cells. The findings provide new insight into B cells responding to HIV-1 envelope during heterologous prime and boost immunization in rhesus macaques and the development of selected autologous neutralizing antibody lineages.

Coercivity of (Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B Nanowire and Its Bonded Magnet

(Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B are potential permanent magnets material due to its large saturation magnetization and high Curie temperature. However, it has moderate magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) and low coercivity. One way to improve its coercivity is to combine the contributions from magnetocrystalline- and magnetic-shape anisotropy by preparing (Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B nanowires. We study the effects of size, morphology, and surface defects on the hard magnetic properties of nanowires using micromagnetic simulation. The hard magnetic properties of (Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B nanowire-bonded magnets are estimated, including the role of inter-wire magnetostatic interaction. By considering the existence of local reductions in MCA energy of up to 30% on the surface layer of nanowires, the anisotropic bonded magnet with a 65% vol. of (Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B nanowires would have typical remanence, B r = 7.6–8.4 kG, coercivity, H ci = 9.6–9.9 kOe, and maximum energy product, (BH) m = 14–17.8 MGOe. Developing effective technology for synthesizing nanowires and fabricating corresponding bonded magnets is promising for manufacturing practical magnets based on the magnetic phase with a relatively low or moderate MCA, such as (Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 ) 2 B.
