KS4A-Omics1.0_FspDS682

Soil fungi facilitate the translocation of inorganic nutrients from soil minerals to other microorganisms and plants. This ability is particularly advantageous in impoverished soils, because fungal mycelial networks can bridge otherwise spatially disconnected and inaccessible nutrient hotspots. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying fungal mineral weathering and transport through soil remains poorly understood. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap by directly visualizing nutrient acquisition and transport through fungal hyphae in a mineral doped soil micromodel using a multimodal imaging approach. Here, we observed how a representative of common saprotrophic soil fungi, Fusarium sp. DS 682, exhibited a mechanosensory response (thigmotropism) around obstacles and through pore spaces (~12 μm) in the presence of minerals. This study establishes the significance of fungal biology and nutrient translocation mechanisms in maintaining fungal growth under water and nutrient limitations in a soil-like microenvironment, using a high-throughput multi-omic analysis approach. Data package KS4A-Omics.1.0_FspDS682 (Publication: Fungal Mineral Weathering Mechanisms Revealed Through Direct Molecular Visualization) contents reported here are the first version (1.0) and contain pre- and post-processed data using high throughput data capture technologies for multi-omic analysis and integration, this data package contains raw and post-processed experimental data for X-Ray Absorption Near Edge Structure Spectroscopy (XANES/XRF), Optical Microscopy, Proteomics, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS), X-Ray Diffraction Spectroscopy (XRD) files, and X- Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) using EMSL capabilities. This data package DOI contains a comprehensive collection of high-throughput multi-omics data and process metadata catalog. Support files include additional data download contents “Read Me” with dataset descriptor information and data source method application ontologies (see data dictionary section). Reported data download content is structured for compliance with reported guidelines provided by community standard initiatives and publisher stakeholder policies supporting FAIR data principles.

Evidence for Neutrino Emission from X-Ray-bright Active Galactic Nuclei with IceCube

Recently, IceCube reported neutrino emission from the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. Using 13.1 yr of IceCube data, we present a follow-up search for neutrino sources in the northern sky. NGC 1068 remains the most significant neutrino source among 110 preselected gamma-ray emitters while also being spatially compatible with the most significant location in the northern sky. Its energy spectrum is characterized by an unbroken power-law with spectral index γ = 3.4 ± 0.2. Consistent with previous results, the observed neutrino flux exceeds its gamma-ray counterpart by at least 2 orders of magnitude. Motivated by this disparity and the high X-ray luminosity of the source, we selected 47 X-ray-bright Seyfert galaxies from the Swift/BAT spectroscopic survey that were not included in the list of gamma-ray emitters. When testing this collection for neutrino emission, we observe a 3.3σ excess from an ensemble of 11 sources, with NGC 1068 excluded from the sample. Our results strengthen the evidence that X-ray-bright cores of active galactic nuclei are neutrino emitters.

Fracture Intersections under Stress: Laboratory Data and Code [Data set]

The connectivity of natural and induced fractures governs the injection and withdrawal of fluids from subsurface reservoirs. Connectivity depends on intersections that control how fluids mix and move through the entire system. Here, we present data sets from 3D X-ray microscopy measurements of simple fracture networks under stress. 3D printing was used to create prismatic blocks that formed fracture networks composed of 2 orthogonal fractures. The network orientation was either "x" or "+" relative to an applied vertical stress. 3D data sets were collected for normal loads of 25, 100 and 200 Newtons for samples with fracture surfaces with either correlated or uncorrelated asperity distributions. The file contains data from the 12 samples analyzed along with an example code used to extract the intersection geometry. Additional experimental details can be found in the manuscript "Geologic Stress Modulates Fluid Mixing at Fracture Intersections" (10.1038/s43247-026-03525-9)and supplemental information to appear in Communications Earth & Environment in 2026.

Operational Focused Data Analytics for Optimizing Radiation Portal Monitor-Based Nuclear Smuggling Detection Systems at Global Ports of Entry

The National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence has deployed a fleet of radiation portal monitors (RPMs) across the world at global ports of entry including seaports, airports, and land border crossings. These RPMs are integrated into radiation detection systems (RDS) that also include fixed cameras, optical character recognition (OCR) systems, primary scanning systems (e.g., X-ray or gamma-ray), and secondary scanning systems (e.g., spectroscopic radiation portal monitors, portable radiation detection systems). The data from these sensing technologies is collected at the Central Alarm Station (CAS) where servers and computers reside to control and operate the system. Operators utilize the data collected by the CAS and declared cargo information to make decisions on how to respond to an alarm. This work explores the use of CAS-located data, looking at both the sensor data streams and operator inputs, to perform analysis which supports customs and border protection agencies to improve training capability and operational effectiveness. We focus on analyzing site level effectiveness and behavior by rolling up CAS-located data collected from individual occurrences. To-date, more than 15 sites (e.g., seaports, airports, border crossings) have been analyzed in this manner with the goal of understanding system operations to verify effectiveness and recommend potential improvements. This work first aims to provide background information on relevant CAS-located data sources and our current operational system analytics process including example results. After summarizing our current analytic techniques, we discuss how the future data analytics systems can provide key benefits to improving operational performance while minimizing the burden these detection systems place on operators.
