Search for Lepton Number Violation in 136 Xe and 134 Xe Decay

The EXO-200/nEXO group at Stony Brook University led by Krishna Kumar searched for neutrinoless double beta decay of 134 Xe and 136 Xe via participation in the final phase of the EXO-200 experiment and calibration pre-R&D for the next generation nEXO concept. On EXO-200, we carried out an improved analysis in the search for 134 Xe using data from Phase-II running. On nEXO, we completed a paper on our first phase of measurements demonstrating the feasibility of using photoelectricity from a gold photocathode to produce controlled amounts of charged clusters in liquid xenon. This has set the stage to develop a new test stand to evaluate the stability of a gold photocathode in order to explore the sensitivity of this method to monitor long electron lifetimes.

Searches for Violations of Fundamental Symmetries [Slides]

The Standard Model of Particle Physics is currently the best theory to describe the most basic building blocks of the Universe. However, it does not explain the complete picture. We need physics beyond the Standard Model.

Violation of the T –1 Relationship in the Lattice Thermal Conductivity of Mg 3 Sb 2 with Locally Asymmetric Vibrations

Most crystalline materials follow the guidelines of T –1 temperature-dependent lattice thermal conductivity (κ L ) at elevated temperatures. Here, we observe a weak temperature dependence of κ L in Mg 3 Sb 2 , T –0.48 from theory and T –0.57 from measurements, based on a comprehensive study combining ab initio molecular dynamics calculations and experimental measurements on single crystal Mg 3 Sb 2 . These results can be understood in terms of the so-called “phonon renormalization” effects due to the strong temperature dependence of the interatomic force constants (IFCs). The increasing temperature leads to the frequency upshifting for those low-frequency phonons dominating heat transport, and more importantly, the phonon-phonon interactions are weakened. In-depth analysis reveals that the phenomenon is closely related to the temperature-induced asymmetric movements of Mg atoms within MgSb 4 tetrahedron. With increasing temperature, these Mg atoms tend to locate at the areas with relatively low force in the force profile, leading to reduced effective 3 rd -order IFCs. The locally asymmetrical atomic movements at elevated temperatures can be further treated as an indicator of temperature-induced variations of IFCs and thus relatively strong phonon renormalization. The present work sheds light on the fundamental origins of anomalous temperature dependence of κ L in thermoelectrics.

Long-Range Azimuthal Correlation, Entanglement, and Bell Inequality Violation by Spinning Gluons at the Large Hadron Collider

We apply the recently developed concept of the nucleon energy–energy correlator (NEEC) for the gluon sector to investigate the long-range azimuthal angular correlations in proton–proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. The spinning gluon in these collisions will introduce substantial nonzero cos(2Φ) asymmetries in both Higgs boson and top quark pair productions, where Φ is the azimuthal angle between the forward and backward energy correlators in the NEEC observables. The genesis of the cos(2Φ) correlation lies in the intricate quantum entanglement. Owing to the substantial cos(2Φ) effect, the NEEC observable in Higgs boson and $t\bar{t}$ production emerges as a pivotal avenue for delving into quantum entanglement and scrutinizing the Bell inequality at high-energy colliders.
