Universal orbital and magnetic structures in infinite-layer nickelates

We conducted a comparative study of the rare-earth infinite-layer nickelate films, RNiO 2 (R = La, Pr, and Nd), using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We found that the gross features of the orbital configurations are essentially the same, with minor variations in the detailed hybridization. For low-energy excitations, we unambiguously confirm the presence of damped magnetic excitations in all three compounds. By fitting to a linear spin-wave theory, comparable spin exchange coupling strengths and damping coefficients are extracted, indicating a universal magnetic structure in the infinite-layer nickelates. Interestingly, while signatures of a charge order are observed in LaNiO 2 in the quasielastic region of the RIXS spectrum, it is absent in NdNiO 2 and PrNiO 2 . Furthermore, this prompts further investigation into the universality and the origins of charge order within the infinite-layer nickelates.

Examination of the universal behavior of the η-to-π 0 ratio in heavy-ion collisions

We demonstrate that the pT dependence of the η/π 0 ratio at midrapidity is universal within a few percent for high-energy p+p, p+A, and d+A collisions, over a broad range of collision energies. The η/π 0 ratio increases with p T up to 4 to 5 GeV/c where it saturates at a nearly constant value of 0.487±0.024. Above p T =5 GeV/c, the same constant value is also observed in A+A collisions independent of collision system, energy, and centrality. At lower p T , where accurate η/π 0 data are absent for A+A collisions, we estimate possible deviations from the universal behavior, which could arise due to the rapid radial hydrodynamic expansion of the A+A collision system. For A+A collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider we find that possible deviations are limited to the p T range from 0.4 to 3 GeV/c and remain less than 20% for the most central collisions.

Energy-entropy relation for asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes with universal horizons

We numerically solve for 2 + 1 asymptotically Lifshitz universal horizon solutions in Horava-Lifshitz gravity for dynamical exponents z = 2 through z = 16 . We find that for all z there is a thermodynamical first law. Furthermore, we find that the energy-entropy relation or Smarr formula expected for a thermal state in a two-dimensional Lifshitz field theory, E = 2 z + 2 T S , is also satisfied for universal horizons, including the correct z scaling.

Exotic energy injection in the early Universe. I. A novel treatment for low-energy electrons and photons

Decaying or annihilating dark matter and other exotic energy injections can modify the spectrum of the universe’s photon bath, resulting in e.g., new contributions to spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background blackbody spectrum and modifications to the temperature and ionization history of the universe. Here, in this study, we present an improved version of the darkhistory code, which is now capable of consistently calculating the spectrum of low-energy photons by properly treating the interactions of these photons with the levels of hydrogen atoms. Other changes to the code include a more detailed treatment of energy deposition by low-energy electrons, and spectral distortions from heating of the intergalactic medium.

Possible origin of α -vacua as the initial state of the Universe

We investigate the cosmological observables using the Euclidean path integral approach. Specifically, we study both the no-boundary compact instantons scenario and the Euclidean wormholes scenario that can induce the creation of two universes from nothing. It is known that perturbations associated with the no-boundary scenario can only be consistent with the Bunch-Davies vacuum. Here, in this study, we demonstrate that the Euclidean wormholes can allow for a de Sitter invariant vacuum, the so-called α -vacua state, where the Bunch-Davies vacuum is a special case. This therefore provides the α -vacua a geometrical origin. As an aside, we discuss a subtle phase issue when considering the power spectrum related to α -vacua in the closed universe framework.

Dynamics of genetic code evolution: The emergence of universality

We study the dynamics of genetic code evolution. The model of Vetsigian et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 103, 10696 (2006)] and Vetsigian [Collective evolution of biological and physical systems, Ph.D. thesis, 2005] uses the mechanism of horizontal gene transfer to demonstrate convergence of the genetic code to a near universal solution. We reproduce and analyze the algorithm as a dynamical system. All the parameters used in the model are varied to assess their impact on convergence and optimality score. We show that by allowing specific parameters to vary with time, the solution exhibits attractor dynamics. Finally, we study automorphisms of the genetic code arising due to this model. We use this to examine the scaling of the solutions to re-examine universality and find that there is a direct link to mutation rate.

Universal Anomalous Diffusion of Quantized Vortices in Ultraquantum Turbulence

In classical viscous fluids, turbulent eddies are known to be responsible for the rapid spreading of embedded particles. However, in inviscid quantum fluids where the turbulence is induced by a chaotic tangle of quantized vortices, dispersion of the particles can be achieved via a nonclassical mechanism, i.e., their binding to the evolving vortices. However, knowledge on how the vortices diffuse and spread in quantum-fluid turbulence is very limited, especially for the so-called ultraquantum turbulence (UQT) generated by a random tangle of vortices. Here we report a systematic numerical study of the apparent diffusion of vortices in UQT in superfluid helium-4 using the full Biot-Savart simulation. We reveal that the vortices in the superfluid exhibit a universal anomalous diffusion (superdiffusion) at small times, which transits to normal diffusion at large times. This behavior is found to be the result of a generic scaling property of the vortex velocity. Our simulation at finite temperatures also nicely reproduces recent experimental observations. Lastly, the knowledge obtained from this study may form the base for understanding turbulent transport and universal vortex dynamics in various quantum fluids.

Test of Lepton Universality in b → $s$$\ell$ + $\ell$ – Decays

The first simultaneous test of muon-electron universality using $B^+$ → $K^+$$\ell^+$$\ell^–$ and $B^0$ → $K^{*0}$$\ell^+$$\ell^–$ decays is performed, in two ranges of the dilepton invariant-mass squared, q 2 . The analysis uses beauty mesons produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 . Each of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in the given q 2 interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements. The results are compatible with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Test of Light-Lepton Universality in the Rates of Inclusive Semileptonic B-Meson Decays at Belle II

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B -meson decays, R ( X e / μ ) = B ( B → X e ν ) / B ( B → X μ ν ) , a precision test of electron-muon universality, using data corresponding to 189 fb - 1 from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. In events where the partner B meson is fully reconstructed, we use fits to the lepton momentum spectra above 1.3 GeV / c to obtain R ( X e / μ ) = 1.007 ± 0.009 ( stat ) ± 0.019 ( syst ) , which is the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind and agrees with the standard-model expectation.

Test of Lepton Flavor Universality with B s 0 → ϕ ℓ + ℓ − Decays

Lepton flavor universality in rare b → s transitions is tested for the first time using B s 0 meson decays. The measurements are performed using p p collision data collected by the LHCb experiment between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 . Branching fraction ratios between the B s 0 → ϕ e + e − and B s 0 → ϕ μ + μ − decays are measured in three regions of dilepton mass squared, q 2 , with 0.1 < q 2 < 1.1 , 1.1 < q 2 < 6.0 , and 15 < q 2 < 19 GeV 2 / c 4 . The results agree with the standard model expectation of lepton flavor universality. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

OmniXAS: A universal deep-learning framework for materials x-ray absorption spectra

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful characterization technique for probing the local chemical environment of absorbing atoms. However, analyzing XAS data presents significant challenges, often requiring extensive, computationally intensive simulations, as well as significant domain expertise. These limitations hinder the development of fast, robust XAS analysis pipelines that are essential in high-throughput studies and for autonomous experimentation. Here, we address these challenges with OmniXAS, a framework that contains a suite of transfer learning approaches for XAS prediction, each uniquely contributing to improved accuracy and efficiency, as demonstrated on the K-edge spectra database covering eight 3⁢d transition metals (Ti–Cu). The OmniXAS framework is built upon three distinct strategies. First, we use M3GNet [Nat. Comput. Sci. 2, 718 (2022)] to derive latent representations of the local chemical environment of absorption sites as input for XAS prediction, achieving significant improvements over conventional featurization techniques. Second, we employ a hierarchical transfer learning strategy, training a universal multitask model across elements before fine-tuning for element-specific predictions. Models based on this cascaded approach after elementwise fine-tuning outperform element-specific models by up to 69%. Third, we implement cross-fidelity transfer learning, adapting a universal model to predict spectra generated by simulation of a different fidelity with a much higher computational cost. This approach improves prediction accuracy by up to 11% over models trained on the target fidelity alone. Our approach significantly boosts the throughput of XAS modeling by orders of magnitude as compared to first-principles simulations and is extendable to XAS prediction for a broader range of elements. The proposed transfer learning framework is generalizable to enhance deep-learning models that target other properties in materials research.

Universal transport in periodically driven systems without long-lived quasiparticles

An intriguing regime of universal charge transport at high entropy density has been proposed for periodically driven interacting one-dimensional systems with Bloch bands separated by a large single-particle band gap. For weak interactions, a simple picture based on well-defined Floquet quasiparticles suggests that the system should host a quasisteady state current that depends only on the populations of the system's Floquet-Bloch bands and their associated quasienergy winding numbers. Here we show that such topological transport persists into the strongly interacting regime where the single-particle lifetime becomes shorter than the drive period. Analytically, we show that the value of the current is insensitive to interaction-induced band renormalizations and lifetime broadening when certain conditions are met by the system's nonequilibrium distribution function. We show that these conditions correspond to a quasisteady state. We support these predictions through numerical simulation of a system of strongly interacting fermions in a periodically modulated chain of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev dots. Our paper establishes universal transport at high entropy density as a robust far from equilibrium topological phenomenon, which can be readily realized with cold atoms in optical lattices. Mechanical cosmology: Simulating scalar fluctuations in expanding universes using synthetic mechanical lattices

Inspired by recent advances in observational astrophysics and continued explorations in the field of analog gravity, we discuss the prospect of simulating models of cosmology within the context of synthetic mechanical lattice experiments. We focus on the physics of expanding universe scenarios described by the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric. Specifically, quantizing scalar fluctuations in a background FLRW spacetime leads to a quadratic bosonic Hamiltonian with temporally varying pair production terms. Here we present a mapping that provides a one-to-one correspondence between these classes of cosmology models and feedback-coupled mechanical oscillators. As proof of principle, we then perform experiments on a synthetic mechanical lattice composed of such oscillators. We simulate two different FLRW expansion scenarios with universes dominated by vacuum energy and matter and discuss our experimental results. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Analytic Thermal Model of an Optical Fiber Based Gamma Thermometer and its Application in a University Research Reactor

This paper describes and validates, by comparison with numerical modeling results, an analytical model of thermal transport in an optical fiber based gamma thermometer (OFBGT) that is appropriate for use in university research reactors. The maximum temperature difference between the thermal mass and the outer sheath ( Δ<!-- Δ --> T ) for the OFBGT design that we have considered is approximately 50 ∘<!-- ° --> C , for the OFBGT in the Central Irradiation Facility of the Ohio State University Research Reactor (OSURR) with the reactor operating at full power (450 kW). The maximum value of Δ<!-- Δ --> T that is predicted by the analytic model for the OFBGT design is smaller by approximately 1.1 °C than the value of Δ<!-- Δ --> T which is predicted by the numerical model, for the same OFBGT design, but including all the details of the design. We have used the analytical model of thermal transport in an OFBGT to determine a normalized Modulation Transfer Function M T F ′ ( k ) ) for the OFBGT. We conclude that MTF ′<!-- ' --> ( k OSU ) > 0.99 , where k OSU is the spatial frequency for the axial dependence of the reactor power distribution in the

Universal Fourier Attack for Time Series

A wide variety of adversarial attacks have been proposed and explored using image and audio data. These attacks are notoriously easy to generate digitally when the attacker can directly manipulate the input to a model, but are much more difficult to implement in the real world. In this paper we present a universal, time invariant attack for general time series data such that the attack has a frequency spectrum primarily composed of the frequencies present in the original data. The universality of the attack makes it fast and easy to implement as no computation is required to add it to an input, while time invariance is useful for real world deployment. Additionally, the frequency constraint ensures the attack can withstand filtering defenses. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the attack on two different classification tasks through both digital and real world experiments, and show that the attack is robust against common transform-and-compare defense pipelines.

Have Astronomers Found a Star Older Than the Universe?

The theory of the Big Bang is accepted nearly universally among the scientific community. However, there is a small cadre of individuals who dispute this consensus and they point to a handful of datums that don’t fit into the picture. One such datum is the existence of a star with an age reported to be older than the cosmos itself. This star is called the Methuselah star, named after the biblical patriarch. Obviously, if the age of this star is truly older than the universe, it would be a discovery of considerable concern to those who accept Big Bang cosmology. In the following text, I describe the debate, beginning with a brief historical treatment of the early discoveries. Furthermore, I have made this choice because the early papers are easy to understand and are accessible suggested reading for introductory students interested in the origins of some of the key evidence supporting the Big Bang.

Universal progression of structure and dynamics in colloidal nanocrystal gels during salt-accelerated aging

Controlling the structure and function of colloidal gels requires a detailed understanding of how the various components govern network formation and aging. In particular, molecular additives like salts are widely used to tune interparticle interactions, yet their influence on gelation pathways in complex systems such as colloidal nanocrystal gels remains inadequately understood. Here, we investigate how noncoordinating salts modulate the evolution of gels formed using chemically linked tin-doped indium oxide nanocrystals. Through combined structural, dynamic, and kinetic analyses, we demonstrate that increasing salt concentration accelerates gelation. When rescaled by salt-dependent characteristic times, the evolution collapses onto universal trajectories, revealing a time-salt superposition principle. The universality extends across length scales, suggesting a consistent salt-dependent mechanism that controls both local structuring and macroscopic network formation. This observed salt modulation of structure and dynamics provides a predictive basis for controlling the kinetics of nonequilibrium nanocrystal gel assembly, enhancing the rational design of functional nanomaterials with tunable properties.

UFO 2.0: the ‘Universal Feynman Output’ format

Abstract We present an update of the Universal FeynRules Output model format, commonly known as the UFO format, that is used by several automated matrix-element generators and high-energy physics software. We detail different features that have been proposed as extensions of the initial format during the last ten years, and collect them in the current second version of the model format that we coin the Universal Feynman Output format. Following the initial philosophy of the UFO, they consist of flexible and modular additions to address particle decays, custom propagators, form factors, the renormalisation group running of parameters and masses, and higher-order quantum corrections.
