Circadian rhythms of temperature and activity in obese and lean Zucker rats

The circadian timing system is important in the regulation of feeding and metabolism, both of which are aberrant in the obese Zucker rat. This study tested the hypothesis that these abnormalities involve a deficit in circadian regulation by examining the circadian rhythms of body temperature and activity in lean and obese Zucker rats exposed to normal light-dark cycles, constant light, and constant dark. Significant deficits in both daily mean and circadian amplitude of temperature and activity were found in obese Zucker female rats relative to lean controls in all lighting conditions. However, the circadian period of obese Zucker rats did not exhibit differences relative to lean controls in either of the constant lighting conditions. These results indicate that although the circadian regulation of temperature and activity in obese Zucker female rats is in fact depressed, obese rats do exhibit normal entrainment and pacemaker functions in the circadian timing system. The results suggest a deficit in the process that generates the amplitude of the circadian rhythm.

A contribution to the controllability of time-lag systems.

Consideration of a property of 'complete controllability' which is a particular case of complete controllability with respect to an arbitrary function. The latter concept has been studied by Popov (1970), who gave a necessary and sufficient condition of controllability in algebraic form. It is shown that the necessary condition of complete controllability with respect to an arbitrary function is also a necessary condition of the particular property of complete controllability under certain given conditions.

Signal processing in a randomly time varying system.

Stochastic operators are applied to an analysis of some deterministic systems of signal transformation. The distribution of a random process at the output of a system is given through its distribution at the input and through a stochastic Green's function. A two-point correlation function is derived to obtain a solution to differential equations which contain coefficients, boundary conditions, or right-hand terms representing random processes.

Software techniques for a distributed real-time processing system

The paper describes software techniques developed for the Unified Data System (UDS), a distributed processor network for control and data handling onboard a planetary spacecraft. These techniques include a structured language for specifying the programs contained in each module, and a small executive program in each module which performs scheduling and implements the module task.

An algorithm for obtaining the minimal realization of a linear time-invariant system and determining if a system is stabilizable-detectable

A definition of centralized fixed modes of a system, which is an adoption of the definition of fixed modes for a decentralized system is made. It is shown that the centralized fixed modes of a system can be easily and efficiently calculated in terms of the eigenvalues of the system, and that the calculation of such fixed modes enables one to determine, in a numerically efficient way, whether a system is controllable, observable, stabilizable, or detectable. An efficient algorithm for reducing a system to minimal realization form is then given. The algorithms have been effectively used on systems of order up to 100.
