Lunar anorthosite 15415 consists almost entirely of anorthite (homogeneous anorthite 96.6 molecule percent), with accessory diopsidic augite and traces of hypersthene, ilmenite, and a silica mineral. The rock has had a complex metamorphic history. The texture reflects at least two episodes of shearing (followed by intense and partial recrystallization, respectively), one episode of cataclastic deformation, and one or more episodes of shattering and fragmentation.
We report the production of (111) epitaxial Pb films on mica and (111) textured Pb films on mica and glass. Film structure is studied by reflection electron diffraction and by etching and optical microscopy. Thin (about 1000 A) epitaxial films are found to be doubly positioned. Reorientation during growth of thicker films leads to single positioning in areas several tenths of a millimeter across.
An experiment was performed in an attempt to evaluate autocorrelation as an indicator of texture using five small patches representing varying distances on each of four lunar photos. Each patch was scanned at 50 micron increments on a 64-level gray scale. Several problems were involved in using the ordinary autocorrelation value but a rougher autocorrelation measure, the percentage of neighboring pairs (at a given lag distance) which fell within one graylevel of one another, yielded very encouraging results. As the distance to the feature decreased, initial slope of the graph of percentage against lag increased, and the general level of the graph decreased. When a crestline was present, the graph tended to continue to decrease at higher lags as well, rather than leveling off after the initial steep slope.
The author has identified the following significant results. The land use category of subimage regions over Kansas within an MSS image can be identified with an accuracy of about 70% using the textural-spectral features of the multi-images from the four MSS bands.
