Final Report for Creative 3D Plant Optimization (C3PO) System
Utah State University (USU) and the University of Alabama’s (UA) X-Hab design project created a 3D printed substrate to facilitate plant growth in a microgravity environment. The design team proposed a 3D printed substrate that would allow the plants to have a root support matrix, necessary oxygen flow, and a passive water and nutrient delivery system. This substrate was designed to easily integrate into NASA’s Veggie and Advanced Plant Habitat platforms. 3D printed components are easily replaceable at a relatively low cost. In addition, since research and development has moved to using 3D printers in space, any needed garden components for the blocks could be easily re-printed while in orbit.

Structural shape optimization in multidisciplinary system synthesis
Structural shape optimization couples with other discipline optimization in the design of complex engineering systems. For instance, the wing structural weight and elastic deformations couple to aerodynamic loads and aircraft performance through drag. This coupling makes structural shape optimization a subtask in the overall vehicle synthesis. Decomposition methods for optimization and sensitivity analysis allow the specialized disciplinary methods to be used while the disciplines are temporarily decoupled, after which the interdisciplinary couplings are restored at the system level. Application of decomposition methods to structures-aerodynamics coupling in aircraft is outlined and illustrated with a numerical example of a transport aircraft. It is concluded that these methods may integrate structural and aerodynamic shape optimizations with the unified objective of the maximum aircraft performance.
Application of mathematical optimization procedures to a structural model of a large finite-element wing
An optimization system is described that consists of the finite-element analysis program known as Engineering Analysis Language (EAL), the CONMIN optimization program, and a piecewise linear analysis. The optimization analysis system (OPTEAL) is used to minimize the mass of a transport wing subject to stress constraints for two static load conditions. The optimization procedure and the optimization analysis system (OPTEAL) are described and the optiomized results with fully stressed design results compared.
Towards Next-Generation Urban Decision Support Systems through AI-Powered Construction of Scientific Ontology Using Large Language Models—A Case in Optimizing Intermodal Freight Transportation
The incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models into various optimization systems is on the rise. However, addressing complex urban and environmental management challenges often demands deep expertise in domain science and informatics. This expertise is essential for deriving data and simulation-driven insights that support informed decision-making. In this context, we investigate the potential of leveraging the pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) to create knowledge representations for supporting operations research. By adopting ChatGPT-4 API as the reasoning core, we outline an applied workflow that encompasses natural language processing, Methontology-based prompt tuning, and Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), to automate the construction of scenario-based ontologies using existing research articles and technical manuals of urban datasets and simulations. From these ontologies, knowledge graphs can be derived using widely adopted formats and protocols, guiding various tasks towards data-informed decision support. The performance of our methodology is evaluated through a comparative analysis that contrasts our AI-generated ontology with the widely recognized pizza ontology, commonly used in tutorials for popular ontology software. We conclude with a real-world case study on optimizing the complex system of multi-modal freight transportation. Our approach advances urban decision support systems by enhancing data and metadata modeling, improving data integration and simulation coupling, and guiding the development of decision support strategies and essential software components.
Optimizing conceptual aircraft designs for minimum life cycle cost
A life cycle cost (LCC) module has been added to the FLight Optimization System (FLOPS), allowing the additional optimization variables of life cycle cost, direct operating cost, and acquisition cost. Extensive use of the methodology on short-, medium-, and medium-to-long range aircraft has demonstrated that the system works well. Results from the study show that optimization parameter has a definite effect on the aircraft, and that optimizing an aircraft for minimum LCC results in a different airplane than when optimizing for minimum take-off gross weight (TOGW), fuel burned, direct operation cost (DOC), or acquisition cost. Additionally, the economic assumptions can have a strong impact on the configurations optimized for minimum LCC or DOC. Also, results show that advanced technology can be worthwhile, even if it results in higher manufacturing and operating costs. Examining the number of engines a configuration should have demonstrated a real payoff of including life cycle cost in the conceptual design process: the minimum TOGW of fuel aircraft did not always have the lowest life cycle cost when considering the number of engines.

Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm on Different Qubit Systems
Solving optimization problems is critical across many research domains, but the high dimensionality of parameter spaces often poses significant challenges. The Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) has emerged as a promising approach for accelerating optimization in the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era by leveraging both classical and quantum computational resources. However, its performance can vary depending on the underlying quantum hardware architecture. In this work, we evaluate the performance of QAOA on different quantum hardware platforms, specifically, superconducting transmon qubits and trapped-ion qubits, targetting real-world optimization problems formulated as fully connected Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) instances. We evaluate both the solution quality and time-to-solution using dense QUBO matrices. Furthermore, we show that large-scale problems, such as a 100-bit QUBO instance, can be effectively tackled by integrating quantum computing with high-performance computing (HPC) resources. This study provides practical insights into the strengths and limitations of different qubit technologies and advances the application of quantum computing in solving real-world optimization problems.
Weather responsive smart ventilation system using multiple optimization parameters
A smart ventilation system which uses outdoor temperature and moisture to optimize control of the system. The main principle is to shift ventilation from time periods that have large indoor-outdoor temperature and moisture differences to periods when these differences are smaller, and their energy and comfort impacts are expected to be less. Fan flow rates are reduced when the outside temperature and moisture falls outside of optimum levels, yet overall air exchange is maintained to ensure chronic and acute exposure to pollutants remains relative to best practice. Online weather and smart thermostat data can be used as control inputs, so no specific measurement devices are needed to control ventilation fans.

Investigating a Renewable-Resource-Targeting Mobile Aquaculture System Using Route Optimization Based on Optimal Foraging Theory
Aquaculture systems require careful consideration of location, which determines water conditions, pollution impacts, and hazardous conditions. Mobility may be able to address these factors while also supporting the targeting of renewable energy sources such as wind, wave, and solar power throughout the year. In this paper, a purpose-built mobile aquaculture ship is identified and modeled with a combination of renewable energy harvesting capabilities as a case study with the objective of assessing the potential benefits of targeting high renewable energy potentials to power aquaculture operations. A route optimization algorithm is created and tuned to simulate the mobility of the aquaculture platform and cost-basis comparisons are made to a stationary system. The small spatial variability in renewable energy potential when combining multiple resources significantly limits the benefits of a mobile, renewable-targeting aquaculture system. On the other hand, the consistent energy harvest from a blend of renewable energy types (13 kW installed wind capacity, 661 m 2 installed solar, and 1 m characteristic width wave-energy converter) suggests that the potential benefits of a mobile platform for offshore aquaculture (mitigation of environmental and social concerns, any potential positive impact on yields, hazard avoidance, etc.) can likely be pursued without significant increases in energy harvester costs.
Recent Advances of PyROS: A Pyomo Solver for Nonconvex Two-Stage Robust Optimization in Process Systems Engineering
This poster highlights uncertainty and technical risk reduction capabilities in CCSI2, with a focus on robust optimization. It presents recent advances of the two-stage robust optimization (RO) solver PyROS and applications to advanced energy systems optimization. To demonstrate the computational performance and reliability of PyROS, a benchmarking study on a library of over 8,500 small-scale RO problems is presented. Further, PyROS is used to obtain robust system designs of a MEA-based CO2 absorber under uncertainty in the thermodynamic property models for a variety of CO2 capture rate threshold requirements. Overall, the results demonstrate that the PyROS solver, including recent extensions to multi-stage RO settings, provides a reliable avenue to optimize the design and operation of advanced energy systems subject to various sources of parametric uncertainty.
