Wave Energy Power Take-off Validation with a Hydraulicly Actuated Rotary Dynamometer and a Bi-Directional High-Power DC Supply

There are many organizations working towards the commercialization of wave energy converter technologies and are advancing their designs through the technology readiness levels (TRLs). A critical step before the field deployment of prototype wave energy converters is the validation of the subsystems and components that are contained in the wave energy converter through laboratory testing and performance characterization. In 2021, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed and demonstrated a system for testing power takeoffs (PTO) with a low-speed, high-torque dynamometer and a grid-tied high-power DC power source and sink before field deployment. The hydraulic dynamometer allows for the simulation of PTO actuation from wave motion and is capable of a wide range of wave periods and heights which are represented as various speeds and torques from the dynamometer. The high-power bidirectional power supply allows for hardware in the loop and controller in the loop testing to be conducted on WEC power electronics. This presentation was made to describe the methods used by NREL research staff to test all components and sub-systems in the PTO of a novel wave energy converter before field deployment.

Potential Oil Supply and CO2 Demand for CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery in the United States

This presentation was given at the 2020 Pittsburgh Coal Conference on Sept 10, 2020. It describes an analysis using the FE/NETL CO2 EOR Evaluation System in order to develop price curves for both oil supply as well as CO2 demand resulting from potential application of CO2 EOR. The analysis was conducted on a dataset of conventional oil reservoirs in the lower-48 states.

Online Monitoring of Radiochemical Processing Streams for the Plutonium-238 Supply Program

Online monitoring with spectrophotometry is being developed to improve the timeliness of analytical measurements for the Plutonium-238 Supply Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A commercially available online monitoring software was used to calculate and view process data in real time to help identify process deviations and optimize system performance. Monitoring detailed process data will improve processing efficiency and help technicians make decisions during hot-cell operations.

America's Strategy to Secure the Supply Chain for a Robust Clean Energy Transition Factsheet

Demand for clean energy technologies such as wind turbines and batteries for electric vehicles has increased significantly as technology costs have plummeted over the last decade and countries seek to diversify their energy systems with more reliable clean energy sources to lower costs for businesses and consumers. The global clean energy market is expected to grow exponentially — reaching $23 trillion at a minimum by 2030. Without new domestic raw materials production and manufacturing capacity, the U.S. will continue to rely on clean energy imports, exposing the nation to supply chain vulnerabilities while simultaneously losing out on the enormous job opportunities associated with the energy transition. Yet, in many cases, the United States has untapped potential to support greater domestic production.

Achieving American Leadership in the Semiconductors Supply Chain Factsheet

Semiconductors are a keystone technology that are essential for the operation of every electronic device, including those that are critical to a clean energy economy. The semiconductor industry has a complex, competitive, and highly integrated international supply chain in which the United States has historically enjoyed a dominant position, but where this position has been eroding over time. In 1995, 26% of global semiconductor manufacturing capacity was located in the United States; this had decreased to 10% by 2020. Investments in key semiconductor manufacturing technologies such as high-voltage power electronics, energy-efficient conventional devices, and advanced packaging point the way to secure a strong domestic semiconductor industrial base.

Achieving American Leadership in the Wind Supply Chain Factsheet

Land-based and offshore wind are expected to be a cornerstone for achieving U.S. clean electricity generation objectives, including 100% clean electricity by 2035 and an 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind by 2030. Meeting these goals will require significant expansion of domestic supply chains and installation of unprecedented amounts of wind capacity.

Gaseous hydrogen storage system with cryogenic supply

A gaseous hydrogen storage and distribution system with a cryogenic supply and a method for the cryogenic conversion of liquid hydrogen into high-pressure gaseous hydrogen are provided. The gaseous hydrogen storage and distribution system includes pressuring liquid hydrogen from a cryogenic tank using a low pressure liquid pump before vaporization within a relatively small vaporizer. The resulting high pressure gaseous hydrogen is transferred to a plurality of storage tanks at ambient temperature according to a desired fill sequence. The high pressure hydrogen gas is subsequently distributed from the storage tanks through a hydrogen fueling dispenser according to a desired dispensing sequence. The present system and method provide improvements in operational safety, eliminates the use of high pressure gas compressor, and minimizes boiling off and ventilation losses at a reduced cost when compared to existing thermal compression storage systems.

US critical materials strategy: The importance of innovation in obtaining supply chain security

Critical raw materials (CRMs) and/or critical minerals and materials (CMMs) are metals, metal groups, and non-metallic minerals essential for the many modern technologies, including wind turbine, electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Different countries have slightly different metrics for determining criticality. However, broadly speaking, the European Union (EU) and United States (US)both define them as materials that reach or exceed thresholds for both economic importance and supply risk. Furthermore, both organizations have implemented instruments, such as the EU's 2024 Critical Raw Materials Act and the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Critical Minerals and Materials Strategy, to facilitate research and development of CRM/CMM ranging from mineral deposit development to geometallurgy to separations to advanced manufacturing. This talk is aimed at an EU audience to explain the DOE CMM strategy and how it compares to the steps taken by the EU to facilitate progress. Furthermore, this talk takes a geology-centric approach on the challenges geoscientists face and how their roles may change in the future.

Systems and methods for randomized energy draw or supply requests

The present disclosure can provide a distributed and anonymous approach to demand response of an electricity system. The approach can conceptualize energy consumption and production of distributed-energy resources (DERs) via discrete energy packets that are coordinated by a cyber computing entity that grants or denies energy packet requests from the DERs. The approach leverages a condition of a DER, which is particularly useful for (1) thermostatically-controlled loads, (2) non-thermostatic conditionally-controlled loads, and (3) bi-directional distributed energy storage systems, among others. In a first aspect of the present approach, each DER independently requests the authority to switch on for a fixed amount of time (i.e., packet duration). The coordinator determines whether to grant or deny each request based electric grid and/or energy or power market conditions. In a second aspect, bi-directional DERs, such as distributed-energy storage systems (DESSs) are further able to request to supply energy to the grid.

Renewable Energy Potential Model: Hawaii Geothermal Supply Curves

This dataset extends the development of the Renewable Energy Potential (reV) model to include geothermal energy, with a specific focus on Hawaii. Provided here are the results of two scenarios that were modeled for geothermal energy in Hawaii: binary enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) at a depth of 2.5 km and hydrothermal binary systems at a depth of 1.5 km. The resource data for both scenarios were derived from Lautze and Haskins (2024) using an exponential method. The PFA probability of heat map was used as a look up table for which temperature gradient to use (Lautze and Haskins, 2024). The dataset provides geospatial and techno-economic details for evaluating geothermal energy potential. It includes spatial coordinates, estimated capacity factors, developable area, resource potential, and annual energy production metrics. Economic details such as levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), site development costs, transmission costs, and fixed-charge rates are also included. The reV model, originally developed for wind and solar energy, incorporates these variables to evaluate deployment constraints related to land use, environmental and cultural factors, and grid integration.
