Summary of spin technology as related to light general-aviation airplanes

A summary was made of all NASA (and NACA) research and experience related to the spin and recovery characteristics of light personal-owner-type general-aviation airplanes. Very little of the research deals with light general-aviation airplanes as such, but many of the airplanes and models tested before and during World War II were similar to present-day light general-aviation airplanes with regard to the factors that are important in spinning. The material is based mainly on the results of spin-tunnel tests of free-spinning dynamically scaled models of about 100 different airplane designs and, whenever possible, includes correlation with full-scale spin tests. The research results are discussed in terms of airplane design considerations and the proper use of controls for recovery.

On the use of space photography for identifying transportation routes: A summary of problems

It has been widely suggested that space photography may be used for updating maps of transportation networks. Proponents of the argument have suggested that color space photographs of the resolution obtained with Hasselblad 80 mm lenses (about 300 feet) contain enough useful information to update the extensions of major U. S. highways. The present study systematically documents for the Dallas-Fort Worth area the potential of such space photography in detecting, and to a lesser degree identifying, the existing road networks. Color separation plates and an enlargement of the color photograph were produced and all visible roads traced onto transparencies for study. Major roads and roads under construction were the most visible while lower class roads and roads in urban areas had the poorest return. Road width and classification were found to be the major determinant in visibility, varying from 100 per cent visible for divided highways to 15 per cent visible of bladed earth roads. In summary, space photographs of this resolution proved to be difficult to use for accurate road delineation. Only super highways in rural areas with the greatest road-width were completely identifiable, the width being about 1/3 that of the resolution cell.

Development of flight experiment task requirements. Volume 1: Summary

A study was conducted to develop the means to identify skills required of scientist passengers on advanced missions related to the space shuttle and RAM programs. The scope of the study was defined to include only the activities of on-orbit personnel which are directly related to, or required by, on-orbit experimentation and scientific investigations conducted on or supported by the shuttle orbiter. A program summary is presented which provides a description of the methodology developed, an overview of the activities performed during the study, and the results obtained through application of the methodology.

Lunar mission safety and rescue: Executive summary

An executive summary is presented of the escape/rescue and the hazards analyses for manned missions and operations in the 1980 time frame. The method of approach, basic data generated, and significant results are outlined, and highlights of the two analyses are given. Areas in which research or technical development efforts could improve mission safety, and specific suggestions for additional effort studies on safety analyses are listed.

Lunar mission safety and rescue: Technical summary

A technical summary is presented of the escape/rescue and the hazards analyses for manned missions and operations in the 1980 time frame. Hazards are interpreted as hazards to man, not to equipment, program schedule, or program objectives. Hazards in 39 individual areas are analyzed, and corrective measures are recommended. Over 200 safety guidelines are proposed, based on significant hazards. Escape and rescue situtations and requirements are identified and analyzed, and escape/survival/rescue concepts are defined to cope with each escape/rescue situation. Areas in which research or technical development efforts could improve mission safety are identified. It is concluded that the primary emphasis should be on survival and escape provisions, with rescue required only where self-help cannot bring the endangered crewmen to a safe haven.
