Continuous Evolution of Eu 2+ /Eu 3+ Mixed Valency Driven by Pressure and Temperature

Continuous mixed valency involving Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ in Eu 4 Bi 6 Se 13 can be induced under applied pressure or at reduced temperatures. The monoclinic structure of Eu 4 Bi 6 Se 13 , crystallizing in the P2 1 /m space group (No. 11), features linear chains of Eu atoms aligned along the b-axis. Magnetic susceptibility measurements, conducted both parallel and perpendicular to the b-axis and analyzed using Curie–Weiss theory, alongside high-pressure partial fluorescence yield (PFY) data from X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), indicate the material’s propensity to adopt a mixed-valent state. Within this state, the trivalent Eu 3+ configuration becomes increasingly favored as the pressure rises or the temperature decreases.

Curvature Energetics Determined by Alchemical Simulation on Four Topologically Distinct Lipid Phases

The relative curvature energetics of two lipids are tested using thermodynamic integration (TI) on four topologically distinct lipid phases. Simulations use TI to switch between choline headgroup lipids (POPC; that prefers to be flat) and ethanolamine headgroup lipids (POPE; that prefer, for example, the inner monolayer of vesicles). Here, the thermodynamical moving of the lipids between planar, inverse hexagonal (H II ), cubic (Q II ; Pn3m space group), and vesicle topologies reveals differences in material parameters that were previously challenging to access. The methodology allows for predictions of two important lipid material properties: the difference in POPC/POPE monolayer intrinsic curvature (ΔJ 0 ) and the difference in POPC/POPE monolayer Gaussian curvature modulus (Δ$\bar{κ_m}$), both of which are connected to the energetics of topological variation. Analysis of the TI data indicates that, consistent with previous experiment and simulation, the J 0 of POPE is more negative than POPC (ΔJ 0 = –0.018 ± 0.001 Å –1 ). The theoretical framework extracts significant differences in $\bar{κ_m}$ of which POPE is less negative than POPC by 2.0 to 4.0 kcal/mol. The range of these values is determined by considering subsets of the simulations, and disagreement between these subsets suggests separate mechanical parameters at very high curvature. Finally, the fit of the TI data to the model indicates that the position of the pivotal plane of curvature is not constant across topologies at high curvature. Overall, the results offer insights into lipid material properties, the limits of a single HC model, and how to test them using simulation.

Predicting Elastic Properties of Materials from Electronic Charge Density Using 3D Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

Materials representation plays a key role in machine learning-based prediction of materials properties and new materials discovery. Currently both graph and three-dimensional (3D) voxel representation methods are based on the heterogeneous elements of the crystal structures. Here, we propose to use electronic charge density (ECD) as a generic unified 3D descriptor for materials property prediction with the advantage of possessing close relation with the physical and chemical properties of materials. We developed an ECD-based 3D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for predicting the elastic properties of materials, in which CNNs can learn effective hierarchical features with multiple convolving and pooling operations. Extensive benchmark experiments over 2170 $Fm\bar3m$ face-centered-cubic materials show that our ECD-based CNNs can achieve good performance for elasticity prediction. Especially, our CNN models based on the fusion of elemental Materials-Agnostic Platform for Informatics and Exploration features and ECD descriptors achieved the best fivefold cross-validation performance. More importantly, we showed that our ECD-based CNN models can achieve significantly better extrapolation performance when evaluated over nonredundant data sets, where there are few neighbor-training samples around test samples. As an additional validation, we evaluated the predictive performance of our models on 329 materials of space group $Fm\bar3m$ by comparing to density functional theory calculated values, which shows a better prediction power of our model for bulk modulus than shear modulus. Because of the unified representation power of ECD, it is expected that our ECD-based CNN approach can also be applied to predict other physical and chemical properties of crystalline materials.

Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Electronic Structures of Lanthanide Indium Perovskites LnInO 3

Ternary lanthanide indium oxides LnInO 3 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) were synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction and characterized by Xray powder diffraction. Rietveld refinement of the powder patterns showed the LnInO 3 materials to be orthorhombic perovskites belonging to the space group Pnma, based on almost-regular InO 6 octahedra and highly distorted LnO 12 polyhedra. Experimental structural data were compared with results from density functional theory (DFT) calculations employing a hybrid Hamiltonian. Valence region X-ray photoelectron and K-shell X-ray emission and absorption spectra of the LnInO 3 compounds were simulated with the aid of the DFT calculations. Photoionization of lanthanide 4f orbitals gives rise to a complex final-state multiplet structure in the valence region for the 4f n compounds PrInO 3 , NdInO 3 , and SmInO 3 , and the overall photoemission spectral profiles were shown to be a superposition of final-state 4f n-1 terms onto the cross-section weighted partial densities of states from the other orbitals. The occupied 4f states are stabilized in moving across the series Pr-Nd-Sm. Band gaps were measured using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. These results demonstrated that the band gap of LaInO 3 is 4.32 eV, in agreement with DFT calculations. This is significantly larger than a band gap of 2.2 eV first proposed in 1967 and based on the idea that In 4d states lie above the top of the O 2p valence band. However, both DFT and X-ray spectroscopy show that In 4d is a shallow core level located well below the bottom of the valence band. Band gaps greater than 4 eV were observed for NdInO 3 and SmInO 3 , but a lower gap of 3.6 eV for PrInO 3 was shown to arise from the occupied Pr 4f states lying above the main O 2p valence band.

Orthorhombic Structures as Inorganic Halide Perovskite Models for High-Throughput DFT Investigations

Although high-symmetry Pm-3m space group cubic models are computationally efficient for high-throughput density functional theory (DFT) calculations of inorganic ternary (ABX 3 ) halide perovskites (HPs), they frequently predict band gaps (E g ) that disagree with experiment. Conversely, while low-symmetry cubic polymorphous networks (PN) comprised of 160 to 320 atoms incur significantly greater computational cost, they predict E g ’s that are more closely aligned with experiment. Here, in this study, we compare the DFT total energies and E g ’s predicted by four high-symmetry structure models (Pnma orthorhombic, R3m trigonal, P4/mbm tetragonal, and Pm-3m cubic) to cubic PNs for 5 experimentally characterized ternary HPs and find that the orthorhombic model computes Eg’s with the smallest MAD of 0.23 eV relative to the PNs. Pair distribution functions and DFT-computed total energies show that octahedral tilting, which is present in the 20-atom orthorhombic and 160-atom cubic PN models but not in the 5-atom cubic models, stabilizes all 5 compositions in our benchmarking set. We also find that imposing PN constraints when generating and optimizing these orthorhombic structures by fixing the unit cell lattice vectors and displacing the atoms prior to ionic relaxation with DFT, which we call the orthorhombic surrogate model (OSM), lowers the MAD of E g predictions to 0.09 eV. Our OSM predicts the PN band gaps of an additional 95 theoretical inorganic ternary HPs with MAD of 0.08 eV, supporting its usage in high-throughput DFT investigations to closely estimate PN band gaps with much less computational expense.

Tetragonal BaCoO 3 : A Co 4+ Ferromagnetic Mott Insulator

We report the stabilization of the metastable body-centered tetragonal (BCT) phase of BaCoO 3 (BCT-BaCoO 3 ) under high-pressure (15 GPa) and hightemperature (1200 °C) conditions using a mixture precursor. This double perovskite adopts the EuTiO 3 -type structure (space group I4/mcm), as confirmed by powder Xray diffraction and high-resolution STEM. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates a predominant Co 4+ oxidation state without detectable oxygen vacancies. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements reveal ferromagnetic ordering at T C ∼ 107 K, attributable to the BCT-BaCoO 3 phase. Above this temperature, the mixed-phase sample exhibits Curie−Weiss paramagnetism, a low-spin to high-spin crossover upon cooling, and a possible intermediate-spin state at elevated temperatures. Resistivity data indicates insulating behavior with weak magnetoresistance. DFT and DFT + DMFT calculations suggest that the insulating state originates from an orbitally selective transition sensitive to the nominal valence of the Co-d shell. The metastable BCT-BaCoO 3 phase cannot be retained in pure form at ambient pressure but can be stabilized by embedding it in a disordered mixture, offering a potential route to discover and preserve other high-pressure phases under ambient conditions.

First-Principles Discovery of Novel LiInP 2 S 6 Polymorphs with Promising Optoelectronic Responses

Recent advances in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) metal thiophosphates have attracted considerable attention due to their promising ionic conductivity, optical characteristics, and tunable physical properties. Within this material family, LiInP 2 S 6 has emerged as an intriguing candidate, not only because of its sensitivity to air and moisture but also due to its suitable band gap within the UV−vis range, enabling potential optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications. In this study, through comprehensive first-principles investigations, we unveil two previously unreported polymorphs of LiInP 2 S 6 in the monoclinic C2/c and trigonal P3̅1c (in-gap) space groups, in addition to examining the experimentally synthesized P3̅1c (in-layer) phase. Our studies identify the C2/c structure as the ground state, lying 9 meV per unit cell lower in energy than the experimentally realized trigonal P3̅1c (in-layer) phase. Further, we systematically examine the elastic, mechanical, thermodynamical, dynamical, electronic, and optical properties of all three polymorphs, confirming their mechanical, thermal, and dynamical stability. Notably, the P3̅1c (in-gap) phase exhibits enhanced stiffness, while the calculated indirect band gaps and strong photon absorption in the UV−vis range (∼3 eV) highlight the potential of the studied LiInP 2 S 6 phases for iontronic devices and optoelectronic applications.

Crystal Structure of Colloidally Prepared Metastable Ag 2 Se Nanocrystals

Structural polymorphism is known for many bulk materials; however, on the nanoscale metastable polymorphs tend to form more readily than in the bulk, and with more structural variety. One such metastable polymorph observed for colloidal Ag 2 Se nanocrystals has traditionally been referred to as the “tetragonal” phase. While there are reports on the chemistry and properties of this metastable polymorph, its crystal structure, and therefore electronic structure, has yet to be determined. We report that an anti-PbCl 2 -like structure type (space group P2 1 /n) more accurately describes the powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray total scattering patterns of colloidal Ag 2 Se nanocrystals prepared by several different methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that this anti-PbCl 2 -like Ag 2 Se polymorph is a dynamically stable, narrow-band-gap semiconductor. Here, the anti-PbCl 2 -like structure of Ag 2 Se is a low-lying metastable polymorph at 5–25 meV/atom above the ground state, depending on the exchange-correlation functional used.

Spin Reorientation in Antiferromagnetic Layered FePt 5 P

FePt 5 P, a substitutional variant of the anti-CeCoIn 5 structure type in the space group P4/mmm, was synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state method and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. FePt 5 P contains layers of FePt 12 clusters formed by magnetically active Fe and heavy Pt with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC); the layers are separated by P atoms. The various Fe–Pt distances in FePt 12 clusters generate complex magnetic orders in FePt 5 P. According to temperature-dependent magnetic and specific heat measurements, FePt 5 P shows a stripe-type antiferromagnetic order at T N ≈ 90 K, which is also confirmed by resistivity measurements. Furthermore, a spin reorientation occurs at ~74 and ~68 K in and out of the ab plane based on the specific heat measurements. The temperature-dependent neutron powder diffraction patterns demonstrate the antiferromagnetic order in FePt 5 P, and the spins orientate up to 58.4° with respect to the c axis at 10 K. First-principles calculations of FePt 5 P show the band splitting at the Fermi level by strong SOC and the s–d hybridization between P and Fe/Pt electrons enhances the structural stability and affects the magnetic ordering.

Strain Effects in SrHfO 3 Films Grown by Hybrid Molecular Beam Epitaxy

Perovskite oxide heterostructures host a large number of interesting phenomena such as ferroelectricity, which are often driven by octahedral distortions in the crystal that may induce polarization. SrHfO 3 (SHO) is a perovskite oxide with a pseudocubic lattice parameter of 4.08 Å that previous density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest can be stabilized in a ferroelectric P4mm phase when stabilized with sufficient compressive strain. Additionally, it is insulating and possesses a large band gap and a high dielectric constant, making it an ideal candidate for oxide electronic devices. Here, to test the viability of epitaxial strain as a driver of ferroic phase transitions, SHO films were grown by hybrid molecular beam epitaxy (hMBE) with a tetrakis(ethylmethylamino)hafnium(IV) source on GdScO 3 and TbScO 3 substrates. Strained SHO phases were characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy to determine the space group of the strained films, with the results compared to those of DFT-optimized models of phase stability versus strain. Contrary to past reports, we find that compressively strained SrHfO 3 undergoes octahedral tilt distortions without associated ferroelectric polarization and most likely takes on the I4/mcm phase with the a 0 a 0 c – tilt pattern.

Luminescent Properties of DOBDC Containing MOFs: The Role of Free Hydroxyls

A novel metal–organic framework (MOF), Mn-DOBDC, has been synthesized in an effort to investigate the role of both the metal center and presence of free linker hydroxyls on the luminescent properties of DOBDC (2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid) containing MOFs. Co-MOF-74, RE-DOBDC (RE–Eu and Tb), and Mn-DOBDC have been synthesized and analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and the fluorescent properties probed by UV–Vis spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT). Mn-DOBDC has been synthesized by a new method involving a concurrent facile reflux synthesis and slow crystallization, resulting in yellow single crystals in monoclinic space group C2/c. Mn-DOBDC was further analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and photoluminescent emission. Results indicate that the luminescent properties of the DOBDC linker are transferred to the three-dimensional structures of both the RE-DOBDC and Mn-DOBDC, which contain free hydroxyls on the linker. In Co-MOF-74 however, luminescence is quenched in the solid state due to binding of the phenolic hydroxyls within the MOF structure. Finally, Mn-DOBDC exhibits a ligand-based tunable emission that can be controlled in solution by the use of different solvents.

Kinetically Controlled Linker Binding in Rare Earth-2,5-Dihydroxyterepthalic Acid Metal–Organic Frameworks and Its Predicted Effects on Acid Gas Adsorption

In the pursuit of highly stable and selective metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for the adsorption of caustic acid gas species, an entire series of rare earth MOFs have been explored. Each of the MOFs in this series (RE-DOBDC; RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu; DOBDC = 2,5-dihydroxyterepthalic acid) was synthesized in the tetragonal space group I4/m. Crystallized MOF samples, specifically Eu-DOBDC, were seen to have a combination of monodentate and bidentate binding when synthesized under typical reaction conditions, resulting in a contortion of the structure. However, extended crystallization times determined that this binding is kinetically controlled and that the monodentate binding option was crystallographically eliminated by extended reaction times at higher temperatures. Furthermore, this series allows for the direct study of the effect of the metal center on the structure of the of the MOF; herein, the lanthanide metal ionic radii contraction across the periodic table results in a reduction of the MOF pore size and lattice parameters. Scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive spectroscopy was used to investigate the stages of crystal growth for these RE-DOBDC MOFs. All MOFs, except Er-DOBDC had a minimum of two stages of growth. These analogues were demonstrated by analysis of neutron diffraction (PND) to exhibit a cooperative rotational distortion of the secondary building unit, resulting in two crystallographically distinct linker sublattices. Computational modeling efforts were used to show distinct differences on acid gas (NO 2 and SO 2 ) binding energies for RE-DOBDC MOFs when comparing the monodentate/bidentate combined linker with the bidentate-only linker crystal structures.

Formation of a Secondary Phase in Thermally Evaporated MAPbI 3 and Its Effects on Solar Cell Performance

Thermal evaporation is a promising deposition technique to scale up perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to large areas, but the lack of understanding of the mechanisms that lead to high-quality evaporated methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI 3 ) films gives rise to devices with efficiencies lower than those obtained by spin coating. Here this work investigates the crystalline properties of MAPbI 3 deposited by the thermal coevaporation of PbI 2 and MAI, where the MAI evaporation rate is controlled by setting different temperatures for the MAI source and the PbI 2 deposition rate is controlled with a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Using grazing incident wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), we identify the formation of a secondary orthorhombic phase (with a Pnma space group) that appears at MAI source temperatures below 155 °C. With synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (XRF) microscopy, we show that the changes in crystalline phases are not necessarily due to changes in stoichiometry. The films show a stochiometric composition when the MAI source is heated between 140 to 155 °C, and the samples become slightly MAI rich at 165 °C. Increasing the MAI temperature beyond 165 °C introduces an excess of MAI in the film, which promotes the formation of films with low crystallinity that contain low-dimensional perovskites. When they are incorporated in solar cells, the films deposited at 165 °C result in the champion power conversion efficiency, although the presence of a small amount of low-dimensional perovskite may lead to a lower open-circuit voltage. We hypothesize that the formation of secondary phases in evaporated films limits the performance of PSCs and that their formation can be suppressed by controlling the MAI source temperature, bringing the film toward a phase-pure tetragonal structure. Control of the phases during perovskite evaporation is therefore crucial to obtain high-performance solar cells.

A Ba 6 Cu 31 Te 22 ( A = K, Rb, Cs) Featuring Polyanionic Copper–Telluride Frameworks with Ultralow Thermal Conductivity

In this study, hree polyanionic tellurides, ABa 6 Cu 31 Te 22 (A = K, Rb, Cs), were synthesized in salt flux. The isostructural tellurides crystallize in a new structure type, in the cubic Pa$\overline{3}$ space group with a Wyckoff sequence of d 10 c 2 b 1 and large unit cell volumes of over 5500 Å 3 . The structures feature a framework of [CuTe 4 ] tetrahedra and [CuTe 3 ] trigonal pyramids with disorder in the Cu sites. The polyanionic frameworks have large square antiprism and cuboctahedral voids where Ba and alkali metal cations are situated, forming [BaTe 8 ] and [ATe 12 ], respectively. The overall compositions are close to being charge balanced. The large [ATe 12 ] cuboctahedra allowed for significant anisotropic displacement of the A cations, as observed from both single crystal X-ray diffraction and heat capacity studies. Alkali cations rattling together with Cu atom displacement and disorder leads to the dispersion of phonons, thus softening the lattice and subsequently reducing the thermal conductivity. Evaluations of the electronic band structure revealed the occurrence of a narrow bandgap together with the presence of a flat band near the valence band maximum, giving rise to the high thermopower. The Cs and Rb analogues show a slope change in the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity around room temperature, which is typical for semimetals or degenerate semiconductors. For the as-synthesized and unoptimized materials, high values of the thermoelectric figure-of-merit of ~0.2 were observed at 623 K.

Steering the Methane Dry Reforming Reactivity of Ni/La 2 O 3 Catalysts by Controlled In Situ Decomposition of Doped La 2 NiO 4 Precursor Structures

The influence of A- and/or B-site doping of Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite materials on the crystal structure, stability, and dry reforming of methane (DRM) reactivity of specific A 2 BO 4 phases (A = La, Ba; B = Cu, Ni) has been evaluated by a combination of catalytic experiments, in situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and aberration-corrected electron microscopy. At room temperature, B-site doping of La 2 NiO 4 with Cu stabilizes the orthorhombic structure ( Fmmm ) of the perovskite, while A-site doping with Ba yields a tetragonal space group ( I 4/ mmm ). We observed the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transformation above 170 °C for La 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 and La 2 Ni 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 4 , slightly higher than for undoped La 2 NiO 4 . Loss of oxygen in interstitial sites of the tetragonal structure causes further structure transformations for all samples before decomposition in the temperature range of 400 °C-600 °C. Controlled in situ decomposition of the parent or A/B-site doped perovskite structures in a DRM mixture (CH 4 :CO 2 = 1:1) in all cases yields an active phase consisting of exsolved nanocrystalline metallic Ni particles in contact with hexagonal La 2 O 3 and a mixture of (oxy)carbonate phases (hexagonal and monoclinic La 2 O 2 CO 3 , BaCO 3 ). Differences in the catalytic activity evolve because of (i) the in situ formation of Ni-Cu alloy phases (in a composition of >7:1 = Ni:Cu) for La 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 , La 2 Ni 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 4 , and La 1.8 Ba 0.2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 , (ii) the resulting Ni particle size and amount of exsolved Ni, and (iii) the inherently different reactivity of the present (oxy)carbonate species. Based on the onset temperature of catalytic DRM activity, the latter decreases in the order of La 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 ~ La 2 Ni 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 4 ≥ La 1.8 Ba 0.2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 > La 2 NiO 4 > La 1.8 Ba 0.2 NiO 4 . Simple A-site doped La 1.8 Ba 0.2 NiO 4 is essentially DRM inactive. The Ni particle size can be efficiently influenced by introducing Ba into the A site of the respective Ruddlesden-Popper structures, allowing us to control the Ni particle size between 10 nm and 30 nm both for simple B-site and A-site doped structures. Hence, it is possible to steer both the extent of the metal-oxide-(oxy)carbonate interface and its chemical composition and reactivity. Counteracting the limitation of the larger Ni particle size, the activity can, however, be improved by additional Cu-doping on the B-site, enhancing the carbon reactivity. Exemplified for the La 2 NiO 4 based systems, we show how the delicate antagonistic balance of doping with Cu (rendering the La 2 NiO 4 structure less stable and suppressing coking by efficiently removing surface carbon) and Ba (rendering the La 2 NiO 4 structure more stable and forming unreactive surface or interfacial carbonates) can be used to tailor prospective DRM-active catalysts.

Sliceable, Moldable, and Highly Conductive Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Batteries

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) require solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, stability, and deformability for optimal energy and power density. Here, we developed lithium-deficient lithium yttrium bromide (LYB) solid electrolytes, Li 3–x YBr 6–x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.50), using a comelting method with controlled lithium deficiency. These electrolytes exhibit favorable mechanical properties such as high moldability and sliceability. The Li 2.65 YBr 5.65 composition has an ionic conductivity of 4.49 mS cm –1 at 25 °C and an activation energy of 0.28 eV. Compared to Li 3 YBr 6 , Li 2.65 YBr 5.65 demonstrates improved rate performance and cycling stability in ASSBs. High-resolution X-ray diffraction confirms the formation of the LYB phase with a C2/m space group. Structural analysis reveals increased cation disorder and larger polyhedral volumes for x > 0 in Li 3–x YBr 6–x , contributing to reduced Li + migration energy barriers. Bond valence site energy calculations and molecular dynamics simulations reveal enhanced 3D lithium-ion transport. NMR spectroscopy further highlights increased Li + dynamics and impurity elimination.

Impact of Mg Substitution on the Structure, Stability, and Properties of the Na 2 Fe 2 F 7 Weberite Cathode

Of the few weberite-type Na-ion cathodes explored to date, Na 2 Fe 2 F 7 exhibits the best performance, with capacities up to 184 mAh/g and energy densities up to 550 Wh/kg reported for this material. However, the development of robust structure–property relationships for this material is complicated by its tendency to form as a mixture of metastable polymorphs, and transform to a lower-energy Na y FeF 3 perovskite compound during electrochemical cycling. Our first-principles-guided exploration of Fe-based weberite solid solutions with redox-inactive Mg 2+ and Al 3+ predicts an enhanced thermodynamic stability of Na 2 Mg x Fe 2–x F 7 as the Mg content is increased, and the x = 0.125 composition is selected for further exploration. We demonstrate that the monoclinic polymorph (space group C2/c) of Na 2 Fe 2 F 7 (Mg0) and of a new Mg-substituted weberite composition, Na 2 Mg 0.125 Fe 1.875 F 7 (Mg0.125), can be isolated using an optimized synthesis protocol. The impact of Mg substitution on the stability of the weberite phase during electrochemical cycling, and on the extent and rate of Na (de)intercalation, is examined. Irrespective of the Mg content, we find that the weberite phase is retained when cycling over a narrow voltage window (2.8–4.0 V vs Na/Na+). Over a wider voltage range (1.9–4.0 V), Mg0 shows steady capacity fade due to its transformation to the NayFeF3 perovskite phase, while Mg0.125 displays more reversible cycling and a reduced phase transformation. Yet, Mg incorporation also leads to kinetically limited Na extraction and a reduced overall capacity. These findings highlight the need for the continued compositional optimization of weberite cathodes to improve their structural stability while maximizing their energy density.

Realization of an Ideal Cairo Tessellation in Nickel Diazenide NiN 2 : High-Pressure Route to Pentagonal 2D Materials

Most of the studied two-dimensional (2D) materials are based on highly symmetric hexagonal structural motifs. In contrast, lower-symmetry structures may have exciting anisotropic properties leading to various applications in nanoelectronics. In this work we report the synthesis of nickel diazenide NiN 2 which possesses atomic-thick layers comprised of Ni 2 N 3 pentagons forming Cairo-type tessellation. The layers of NiN 2 are weakly bonded with the calculated exfoliation energy of 0.72 J/m 2 , which is just slightly larger than that of graphene. The compound crystallizes in the space group of the ideal Cairo tiling (P4/mbm) and possesses significant anisotropy of elastic properties. The single-layer NiN 2 is a direct-band-gap semiconductor, while the bulk material is metallic. Furthermore, this indicates the promise of NiN 2 to be a precursor of a pentagonal 2D material with a tunable direct band gap.
