System and method associated with expedient detection and reconstruction of cyber events in a compact scenario representation using provenance tags and customizable policy

A system associated with detecting a cyber-attack and reconstructing events associated with a cyber-attack campaign, is disclosed. The system performs various operations that include receiving an audit data stream associated with cyber events. The system identifies trustworthiness values in a portion of data associated with the cyber events and assigns provenance tags to the portion of the data based on the identified trustworthiness values. An initial visual representation is generated based on the assigned provenance tags to the portion of the data. The initial visual representation is condensed based on a backward traversal of the initial visual representation in identifying a shortest path from a suspect node to an entry point node. A scenario visual representation is generated that specifies nodes most relevant to the cyber events associated with the cyber-attack based on the identified shortest path.A corresponding method and computer-readable medium are also disclosed.

Modeling The DLOFC Accident Scenario of HTR-PM Equilibrium Core Using NEAMS Tools

High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGRs) have excellent characteristics in terms of safety and high thermal efficiency, and they are gaining a large interest from the industry as a candidate of Gen-IV reactors for a wide range of applications. The High Temperature gas-cooled Reactor Pebble-bed Module project (HTR-PM) is one of these designs and where helium gas is used to cool the pebble-bed region that consists of spherical fuel elements moderated with graphite. The HTR-PM design is based on the combined experience from the German pebble-bed reactor program from the 1960s through the 1990s and the HTR-10 experience in China during the 2000s. Idaho National Laboratory has a long experience in modeling of HTGRs working in developing neutronics and thermal hydraulics tools for the proper modeling of these reactors. The neutronics code Griffin has the capability to model pebble depletion . While the thermal hydraulics code Pronghorn was developed mainly to model the pebble bed reactors with the porous media assumption. In this work, an equilibrium core Multiphysics model was developed for the HTR-PM reactor to analyze the depressurized loss of forced cooling accident scenario (DLOFC). This paper is organized as follows: First, a brief description of the reactor and model specifications are provided. Then, the developed Multiphysics model is discussed. Finally, verification results of the steady-state equilibrium core and DLOFC accident are presented followed by a summary of the conclusions.

IceCube's convex all-sky neutrino spectrum consistent with the magnetically powered corona scenario for active galactic nuclei

High-energy multimessenger background analyses over the past decade have provided evidence for a population of hidden neutrino sources that are opaque to GeV-TeV gamma rays, a picture bolstered by recent observations of the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068. The coronal regions in the hearts of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been proposed as the most promising sites for such hidden nonthermal particle production, and NGC 1068 is expected to be the most neutrino-active galaxy for IceCube. We demonstrate that the latest all-sky neutrino spectrum, exhibiting a spectral bend around 3-30 TeV, is consistent with predictions of the magnetically powered corona scenario, and the models for the all-sky neutrino flux can simultaneously explain the multimessenger data from NGC 1068 within observational and modeling uncertainties. We further show, in a largely model-independent way, that the contribution from NGC 1068-like sources does not overshoot the observed medium-energy neutrino flux. Finally, we highlight the key role of the Eddington ratio, which can drive substantial variations in the predicted neutrino fluxes of nearby AGNs, and we encourage systematic multimessenger searches for the neutrino-brightest AGNs.

Multi-Scenario Extreme Weather Simulator

The Multi-scenario Extreme Weather Simulator (MEWS) takes existing historical weather data and inserts trends and extreme events such as heat waves, hurricanes, extreme precipitation, or winter storms. The code includes functionality for projecting increasing frequency and duration of such events over a large range of statistically sampled realizations of the future. These weather files can then be used in building energy simulations through the Energy Plus software created by DOE. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525 SAND2021-8658 O

Photovoltaic Deployment Scenarios toward Global Decarbonization: Role of Disruptive Technologies

To totally decarbonize global electrical systems using photovoltaics (PVs) in the 2050–2060 decade, the world would need to install 63.4 TW of PV. This article models and explores how a PV manufacturing ramp‐up trajectory toward this goal can be achieved while assuming that investors continue to make financially rational decisions avoiding stranded production assets and therefore protecting their return on investment. The model effectively exploits experience curve benefits in both the scaling of the manufacturing process and continued progress in product design technologies. The scale‐up challenge is amplified because trajectories that achieve this goal require an unprecedented ramp‐up of production capacity over just two decades, followed by relatively modest demand to maintain the installed base and support continued population growth. It is demonstrated that sustainable ramp‐up of manufacturing is indeed possible and shown that the deployment of the requisite manufacturing capacity can be accelerated and accomplished at lower total capital cost by the introduction of disruptive technologies that have lower capital intensity, embedded energy, or higher efficiency.

Developing high performance RF heating scenarios on the WEST tokamak

High power experiments, up to 9.2 MW with LHCD and ICRH, have been carried out in the full tungsten tokamak WEST. Here, quasi non inductive discharges have been achieved allowing to extend the plasma duration to 53 s with stationary conditions in particular with respect to tungsten contamination. Transitions to H mode are observed, and H-modes lasting up to 4 s have been obtained. The increase in stored energy is weak since the power crossing the separatrix is close to the L–H threshold. Hot L mode plasmas (central temperature exceeding 3 keV) with a confinement time following the ITER L96 scaling law are routinely obtained. The weak aspect ratio dependence of this scaling law is confirmed. Tungsten accumulation is generally not an operational issue on WEST. Difficulty of burning through tungsten can prevent the discharge from accessing to a hot core plasma in the ramp-up phase, or can lead to rapid collapse of the central temperature when radiation is enhanced by a slight decrease of the temperature. Except a few pulses post-boronization, the plasma radiation is rather high (P rad /P tot ~ 50%) and is dominated by tungsten. This fraction does not vary as the RF power is ramped up and is quite similar in ICRH and/or LHCD heated plasmas. An estimate of the contribution of the RF antennas to the plasma contamination in tungsten is given.

Electric dipole moments in a leptoquark scenario for the B-physics anomalies

Vector leptoquarks can address the lepton flavor universality anomalies in decays associated with the b → cℓν and b → sℓℓ transitions, as observed in recent years. While not required to explain the anomalies, these leptoquarks generically yield new sources of CP violation. In this paper, we explore constraints and discovery potential for electric dipole moments (EDMs) in leptonic and hadronic systems. We provide the most generic expressions for dipole moments induced by vector leptoquarks at one loop. We find that O(1) CP-violating phases in tau and muon couplings can lead to corresponding EDMs within reach of next-generation EDM experiments, and that existing bounds on the electron EDM already put stringent constraints on CP-violating electron couplings.

A Bayesian View on the Dr. Evil Scenario

Abstract In Defeating Dr. Evil with Self-Locating Belief , Adam Elga proposes and defends a principle of indifference for self-locating beliefs: if an individual is confident that his world contains more than one individual who is in a state subjectively indistinguishable from his own, then he should assign equal credences to the hypotheses that he is any one of these individuals. Through a sequence of thought experiments, Elga in effect claims that he can derive the credence function that should apply in such situations, thus justifying his principle of indifference. Here we argue, using a Bayesian approach, that Elga’s reasoning is circular: in analyzing the third of his thought experiments, he uses an assertion that is justifiable only if one assumes, from the start, the principle of indifference that he is attempting to justify. We agree with Elga that the assumption of equal credences is a very reasonable principle, in the absence of any reason to assign unequal credences, but we do not agree that the equality of credences can be so derived.
