Zinc Speciation and Propane Dehydrogenation in Zn/H-ZSM-5 Catalysts

Zn/H-ZSM-5 catalysts have been frequently investigated for propane dehydrogenation (PDH); however, the active site remains unresolved due to the complexity of the system. We employed in situ FTIR spectroscopy and a kinetics method to correlate the Zn speciation and PDH activity in Zn/H-ZSM-5 with two Si/Al ratios (15 and 39) and a range of Zn/Al ratios (0–1.7). Incremental additions of zinc show that Zn 2+ sites are preferentially formed on H-ZSM-5 over a fraction of paired Al sites followed by [Zn-O-Zn] 2+ and [ZnOH] + sites and then ZnO x clusters. The [Zn-OH] + and [Zn-O-Zn] 2+ sites in H-ZSM-5 are more active and selective than isolated Zn 2+ for PDH. [Zn-OH] + species sublimate over time on stream, leading to catalyst deactivation, while [Zn-O-Zn] 2+ species are stable even after high-temperature reduction (750 °C for 60 min). Three distinct Zn sites ([Zn-O-Zn] 2+ , Zn 2+ , and [ZnOH] + ) show a similar propane reaction order (close to 1) and H 2 reaction order (close to 0). Combined with the lack of Zn hydride when propane flows over the catalyst at 550 °C, it is concluded that propane adsorption and dissociation is a rate-determining step and H 2 desorption is fast. This work indicates that the preparation of H-ZSM-5 with abundant Al pairs may be a strategy to form stable and selective Zn/H-ZSM-5 catalysts for propane dehydrogenation. Furthermore, it is also highlighted that examining the effect of both metal/Al ratios and Al distribution of the zeolite is crucial in identifying the metal cations in metal–zeolite systems.

Insights into Dopant-Mediated Tuning of Silica-Supported Mo Metal Centers for Enhanced Olefin Metathesis

Here, we show that the electronic environment around active Mo centers supported on mesoporous silicates can be tuned by the addition of transition metals creating highly dispersed bimetallic catalysts that display enhanced activity for ethylene + 2-butene metathesis to propylene. The bimetallic catalysts are prepared by incorporating electrophilic Lewis acid metals (M) such as Nb, Ta, Zr, or Hf as dopant promoters into mesoporous KIT-6 supports using a one-pot sol–gel technique followed by impregnation of the Mo species. All the bimetallic Mo/M-KIT-6 catalysts display better activity than monometallic Mo/KIT-6 catalyst (28.7 ± 1.1 mmol (mol Mo s ) –1 ), with (Mo/Nb-KIT-6) catalysts exhibiting maximum propylene formation rates (54.2 ± 0.5 mmol (mol Mo s ) –1 ) at an identical Mo loading.

NMR Studies of Block Copolymer-Based Supramolecules in Solution

Hierarchical assemblies from block copolymer (BCP)-based supramolecules have shown immense potential as programmable materials owing to their versatility for incorporating functional molecules and provide access to arrays of hierarchical structures. However, there remains a knowledge gap on the formation of the supramolecule in solution. Here, we applied NMR techniques to investigate the solution-phase behavior of the most studied supramolecular systems, polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine)(3-pentadecylphenol) (PS-b-P4VP(PDP) r ). The results show that the supramolecule likely adopts a coil-comb conformation, despite the small molecule's (PDP) rapid exchange between the bonded and free states. The exchange rate (>10 4 s -1 ) exceeds the NMR time scale at the frequency of interest. The supramolecules form under dilute conditions (~2 vol %) and are attributed to the enthalpic gain of the hydrogen bonding between the PDP and 4VP. As the solute concentration increases (>10 vol %), the supramolecule forms micelle-like aggregates with PDP accumulated within the comb-block's pervaded volume based on analysis of the apparent molecular weight, viscosity, and chain dynamics. Overall, this work sheds light on the long-standing question regarding the evolution of the constituents in the BCP-based supramolecule in solution and provides valuable guidance toward their solution-based processing and morphological control.

Design and Evaluation of Pyridinyl Sulfonyl Piperazine LpxH Inhibitors with Potent Antibiotic Activity Against Enterobacterales

Enterobacterales, a large order of Gram-negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, are major causes of urinary tract and gastrointestinal infections, pneumonia, and other diseases in healthcare settings and communities. ESBL-producing Enterobacterales and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales can break down commonly used antibiotics, with some strains being resistant to all available antibiotics. This public health threat necessitates the development of novel antibiotics, ideally targeting new pathways in these bacteria. Gram-negative bacteria possess an outer membrane enriched with lipid A, a saccharolipid that serves as the membrane anchor of lipopolysaccharides and the active component of the bacterial endotoxin, causing septic shock. The biosynthesis of lipid A is crucial for the viability of Gram-negative bacteria, and as an essential enzyme in this process, LpxH has emerged as a promising target for developing novel antibiotics against multidrugresistant Gram-negative pathogens. Here, we report the development of pyridinyl sulfonyl piperazine LpxH inhibitors. Among them, ortho-substituted pyridinyl compounds significantly boost LpxH inhibition and antibiotic activity over the original phenyl series. Structural and QM/MM analyses reveal that these improved activities are primarily due to the enhanced interaction between F141 of the LpxH insertion lid and the pyridinyl group. Incorporation of the N-methyl-N-phenyl-methanesulfonamide moiety into the pyridinyl sulfonyl piperazine backbone results in JHLPH- 106 and JH-LPH-107, both of which exhibit potent antibiotic activity against wild-type Enterobacterales such as K. pneumoniae and E. coli. JH-LPH-107 exhibits a low rate of spontaneous resistance and a high safety window in vitro, rendering it an excellent lead for further clinical development.
