Strongly Correlated Exciton-Magnetization System for Optical Spin Pumping in CrBr 3 and CrI 3 .

Ferromagnetism in van der Waals systems, preserved down to a monolayer limit, attracted attention to a class of materials with general composition CrX 3 (X=I, Br, Cl), which are treated now as canonical two-dimensional ferromagnets. Their diverse magnetic properties, such as different easy axes or varying and controllable character of in-plane or interlayer ferromagnetic coupling, make them promising candidates for spintronic, photonic, optoelectronic, and other applications. Still, significantly different magneto-optical properties between the three materials, have been presenting a challenging puzzle for researchers over the last few years. Herewith, we demonstrate that despite similar structural and magnetic configurations, the coupling between excitons and magnetization is qualitatively different in CrBr 3 and CrI 3 films. Through a combination of the optical spin pumping experiments with the state-of-the-art theory describing bound excitonic states in the presence of magnetization, we concluded that the hole-magnetization coupling has the opposite sign in CrBr 3 and CrI 3 and also between the ground and excited exciton state. Consequently, we demonstrate efficient spin pumping capabilities in CrBr 3 driven by magnetization via spin-dependent absorption and unraveled the different origins of the magnetic hysteresis in CrBr 3 and CrI 3 are unraveled

Quantization of the Higher Berry Curvature and the Higher Thouless Pump

Here, we show that for families of 1d lattice systems in an invertible phase, the cohomology class of the higher Berry curvature can be refined to an integral degree-3 class on the parameter space. Similarly, for families of U(1)-invariant 2d lattice systems in an invertible phase, the higher Thouless pump can be refined to an integral degree-2 class on the parameter space. We show that the 2d Thouless pump can be identified with an excess Berry curvature of a flux insertion.

A physics-based parametric regression approach for feedwater pump system diagnosis

Here in this paper, we assessed the performance of a model-based approach for fault diagnosis of a nuclear power plant feedwater pump system. Physics-based models were constructed to monitor the performance of the system components. Plant data were used for the calibration of the models and subsequently in the diagnosis of abnormal events. We considered two real-time events representing scenarios of a pump fault and component performance degradation. The two events were correctly diagnosed, and the results demonstrated the high detection sensitivity of the physics-based models. Various sensor fault scenarios were simulated to show the capability of the approach to detect and uniquely identify sensor faults. Results for a scenario in which the plant operated in flexible power mode also showed that the diagnostic approach is insensitive to changes of operating conditions, which is one of the advantages of the model-based approach using physics-based models over purely data-driven approach.

Discovery of multidrug efflux pump inhibitors with a novel chemical scaffold

Multidrug efflux is a major contributor to antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. Inhibition of multidrug efflux pumps is a promising approach for reviving the efficacy of existing antibiotics. Previously, inhibitors targeting both the efflux transporter AcrB and the membrane fusion protein AcrA in the Escherichia coli AcrAB-TolC efflux pump were identified. In this work we use existing physicochemical property guidelines to generate a filtered library of compounds for computational docking. We then experimentally test the top candidate coumpounds using in vitro binding assays and in vivo potentiation assays in bacterial strains with controllable permeability barriers. We thus identify a new class of inhibitors of E. coli AcrAB-TolC. Six molecules with a shared scaffold were found to potentiate the antimicrobial activity of erythromycin and novobiocin in hyperporinated E. coli cells. Importantly, these six molecules were also active in wild-type strains of both Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae, potentiating the activity of erythromycin and novobiocin up to 8-fold.

Logical approach to tritium vacuum pump selection for fusion applications

Vacuum pumps have been used for tritium processing since the 1940s following the isolation of pure tritium. The largest problem facing tritium vacuum pumps is the tritium radioactive decay. The beta particles, recoil energy, and subsequent radical formations are detrimental to most carbon-based materials. Carbon materials, such as plastics, elastomers, carbon fiber, activated carbon, etc., react with tritium to form methane and in the process strip material from the carbonbased material. Other reactions can be self-catalyzing, as is the case with nitrogen and tritium forming tritiated ammonia at room temperature and pressure. Tritium also readily isotopically exchanges with surface -OH groups, increasing the amount of protium in the gas stream while creating a tritium holdup on the surface. Metals are the preferred material when working with tritium, but tritium will permeate into and through almost all metals at some point. The entrapped tritium can decay inside the metal, creating local helium distortions that can impact the structural properties above and beyond the hydrogen embrittlement issue tritium can cause.

Optical diagnostic design for measuring the radiation front with a mid-leg pumped divertor on DIII-D

The design of an optical diagnostic system to localize the radiation front in a mid-leg pumped divertor configuration on DIII-D is presented. Divertor detachment is a key mechanism for handling power exhaust in tokamaks, and mid-leg pumping offers a promising approach to radiatively dissipate power while maintaining acceptable core performance. To predict the location of the radiation front and design a spectroscopic diagnostic to measure its position, a database of SOLPS-ITER simulations across a range of input powers and gas puffing rates representative of DIII-D operation was employed. These simulations provide self-consistent plasma backgrounds for a Cherab-Raysect synthetic diagnostic framework, which incorporates detailed tokamak geometry and physically accurate ray-tracing. Synthetic simulations of optical sightlines and viewing cone geometry were used to calculate line-integrated emission from the plasma, particularly of the C III 465 nm line, to serve as a proxy for the T e ≈ 7 − 10 eV temperature region associated with the onset and evolution of divertor detachment. Neutral deuterium emission is also evaluated for comparison. The synthetic diagnostic is used to assess the performance of existing DIII-D optical systems, including filterscopes and the Multichord Divertor Spectrometer, and to optimize line-of-sight placement within mechanical and installation constraints. The results provide quantitative guidance for diagnostic implementation on DIII-D and demonstrate the advantage of integrated synthetic diagnostics for divertor design studies and future advanced divertor concepts.

Measurement of optically-pumped electron spin polarization in n-GaAs at high external electric fields

We use the technique of time-resolved Kerr rotation (TRKR) to measure the electron spin polarization generated by optical spin pumping in an n-type gallium arsenide (GaAs) epilayer when an external electric field is simultaneously applied on the sample. The drift of the electron spins under the influence of the external electric field is captured with spatial scans of the pump–probe separation. A significant decay in the magnitude of electron spin polarization with electric field is observed and is attributed to the increased inhomogeneous broadening caused by the field-induced drift and the hot electron effects. Here, we extend the electric field range to as high as the Gunn threshold field in the measurement and we do not observe a spin amplification effect due to the spin Gunn effect under our experimental scheme.

Observing photo-induced chiral edge states of graphene nanoribbons in pump-probe spectroscopies

Photo-induced edge states in low-dimensional materials have attracted considerable attention due to the tunability of topological properties and dispersion. Specifically, graphene nanoribbons have been predicted to host chiral edge modes upon irradiation with circularly polarized light. Here, we present numerical calculations of time-resolved angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and trRIXS of a graphene nanoribbon. We characterize pump-probe spectroscopic signatures of photo-induced edge states, illustrate the origin of distinct spectral features that arise from Floquet topological edge modes, and investigate the roles of incoming photon energies and finite core–hole lifetime in RIXS. With momentum, energy, and time resolution, pump-probe spectroscopies can play an important role in understanding the behavior of photo-induced topological states of matter.

Ab-initio simulations of coherent phonon-induced pumping of carriers in zirconium pentatelluride

Abstract Laser-driven coherent phonons can act as modulated strain fields and modify the adiabatic ground state topology of quantum materials. Here we use time-dependent first-principles and effective model calculations to simulate the effect of the coherent phonon induced by strong terahertz electric field on electronic carriers in the topological insulator ZrTe 5 . We show that a coherent A 1g Raman mode modulation can effectively pump carriers across the band gap, even though the phonon energy is about an order of magnitude smaller than the equilibrium band gap. We reveal the microscopic mechanism of this effect which occurs via Landau–Zener-Stückelberg tunneling of Bloch electrons in a narrow region in the Brillouin zone center where the transient energy gap closes when the system switches from strong to weak topological insulator. The quantum dynamics simulation results are in excellent agreement with recent pump-probe experiments in ZrTe 5 at low temperature.

Advected carbon younger than the sediment fuels microbial metabolism in a pumped deep aquifer

Ever deeper wells are drilled worldwide to pump potable groundwater. Recent studies argue that overpumping compresses clays and releases reactive dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which in turn drives a series of microbial reactions that affect groundwater potability including arsenic concentrations. Here, we use a novel method to measure the radiocarbon ages of microbial RNA to determine the source of reactive or metabolizable DOC and argue against the compression of clays as the sole source of carbon. We show that microbial RNA (5,230; 5,550; 6,250 yr; n = 3 wells), DOC (280-10,800 yr; n = 13), and methane (modern to 6,240 yr; n = 3), from an overpumped deep aquifer in Bangladesh are much younger than the overlying clay layers deposited during the Pleistocene over 12,000 years ago. Mass-balance indicates that at least half of the carbon incorporated into RNA has to come from reactive DOC or methane that is advected downward via vertical recharge. This metabolism of advected organic carbon could have implications for the quality of water pumped from deep aquifers.

Probing polarization-tunable sub-terahertz spin pumping in bimodal α-Fe 2 O 3 /Pt

Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) is an insulating antiferromagnet possessing a room temperature canted phase induced by the super-exchange Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI), resulting in enhanced spin pumping and spin transport over uniaxial antiferromagnets. In this work we resonantly excite the quasi-ferromagnetic (acoustic) and purely antiferromagnetic (optical) spin-dynamical modes in bulk and thin-film heterostructures of α-Fe 2 O 3 /Pt at room temperature, inducing inverse-spin-Hall-voltages up to 255 GHz. Following recent measurements of optical-mode spin-pumping in α-Fe 2 O 3 , we observe a novel and exotic microwave polarization mapping along with amplified spin-charge conversion in the optical branch and discuss the implications of layer thickness on acoustic and optical spin-modes. The results provide a deeper understanding of spin-wave selection rules for canted antiferromagnets and their potential use in nanoscale terahertz spintronics.

Excited state dynamics of cis , cis -1,3-cyclooctadiene: UV pump VUV probe time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy

We present UV pump, vacuum ultraviolet probe time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of the excited state dynamics of cis,cis-1,3-cyclooctadiene. A 4.75 eV deep UV pump pulse launches a vibrational wave packet on the first electronically excited state, and the ensuing dynamics are probed via ionization using a 7.92 eV probe pulse. The experimental results indicate that the wave packet undergoes rapid internal conversion to the ground state in under 100 fs. Comparing the measurements with electronic structure and trajectory surface hopping calculations, we are able to interpret the features in the measured photoelectron spectra in terms of ionization to several states of the molecular cation.

Parallel high-frequency magnetic sensing with an array of flux transformers and multi-channel optically pumped magnetometer for hand MRI application

Here, we investigate an approach for parallel high-frequency magnetic sensing based on a multi-channel radio frequency (RF) optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) coupled to multiple flux transformers (FTs) with a focus on hand magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) application at ultra-low field (ULF). Multiple RF OPM sensing channels are realized by using a single large-area alkali-metal vapor cell and two laser beams for pumping and probing, shared for all the channels. This design leads to significant cost reduction when multi-channel sensing is desirable, as in the case of ULF MRI. The FT, composed of two connected coils, serves as a transmitter of a target magnetic field to the OPM, while decoupling the OPM from untargeted magnetic fields in the sensing area that can limit the OPM performance. For hand MRI application, theoretical and numerical analysis is performed to determine an optimal geometry for the FT array that could improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and sufficiently reduce crosstalk between FTs. We estimate that the optimized multi-channel FT-OPM sensor can achieve a magnetic field sensitivity of the order of 1 fT / Hz 1 / 2 above 100 kHz, which would be sufficient for 1 mm resolution MRI. In general, the multi-channel capability enables simultaneous magnetic measurements, thus reducing the sensing time and improving the SNR, and we anticipate many applications of the multi-channel FT-OPM sensor beyond the targeted here hand MRI: anatomical parallel ULF MRI of the human brain and other parts of the body, airport security screening, magnetic material imaging, and many others.

X-ray multi-probe data acquisition: A novel technique for laser pump x-ray transient absorption spectroscopy

We report the development and implementation of a novel data acquisition (DAQ) technique for synchrotron-based laser pump X-ray Transient Absorption (XTA) spectroscopy, called X-ray Multi-Probe DAQ (XMP DAQ). This technique utilizes high performance analog to digital converters and home-built software to efficiently measure and process the XTA signal from all x-ray pulses between laser excitations. XMP DAQ generates a set of time resolved x-ray absorption spectra at thousands of different pump–probe time delays simultaneously. Two distinct XMP DAQ schemes are deployed to accommodate different synchrotron storage ring filling patterns. Current Integration (CI) DAQ is a quasi-analog technique that implements a fitting procedure to extract the time resolved absorption intensity from the averaged fluorescence detector response. The fitting procedure eliminates issues associated with small drifts in the voltage baseline and greatly enhances the accuracy of the technique. Photon Counting (PC) DAQ is a binary technique that uses a time resolved histogram to calculate the XTA spectrum. While PC DAQ is suited to measure XTA data with closely spaced x-ray pulses (~10 ns) and a low count rate (<1 detected photon/pulse), CI DAQ works best for widely spaced pulses (tens of ns or greater) with a high count rate (>1 detected photon/pulse). XMP DAQ produces a two-dimensional XTA dataset, enabling efficient quantitative analysis of photophysical and photochemical processes from the sub-nanosecond timescale to 100 μs and longer.

Rotational pumping revisited

This paper considers a pure electron plasma, with a small admixture of negative ions, confined in a Penning–Malmberg trap. When a diocotron mode is excited on the plasma, the end sheaths of the plasma are azimuthally distorted. During reflection at a distorted end sheath, an ion steps off of the surface characterizing the drift motion in the plasma interior, and this step produces transport. The diocotron mode transfers canonical angular momentum to the ions, and in response damps. These transport mechanism and associated damping are called rotational pumping. It is particularly strong when the axial bounce motion and the rotational drift motion, in the rotating frame of the mode, satisfy a resonance condition. This paper calculates the transport flux of ions and the associated damping rate of the mode in the resonant regime. Previous papers have discussed the theory and the experimental observation of rotational pumping for the special case of a diocotron mode with azimuthal wave number l = 1, and this paper extends the theory to modes with l≠1, which may sound like a trivial extension, but in fact is not.

Demonstration of yellow (568 nm) stimulated emission from optically pumped InGaN/GaN multi-quantum wells

We demonstrate room-temperature stimulated emission at 568 nm from low dislocation density InGaN/GaN multi-quantum wells. For a 1.4 mm long and a 50 $μ$4m wide ridge bar optically pumped by a high-power pulsed laser, we observed an emission peak at 568 nm with a narrow spectral width of less than 2 nm at room temperature. The measured pumping threshold is less than 1.5 MW/cm 2 , and the polarization ratio of the emission is over 90%. In conclusion, this demonstration paves the way for the future development of electrically injected InGaN semiconductor yellow laser diodes.

Implementation of a laser–neutron pump–probe capability for inelastic neutron scattering

Knowledge about nonequilibrium dynamics in spin systems is of great importance to both fundamental science and technological applications. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is an indispensable tool to study spin excitations in complex magnetic materials. However, conventional INS spectrometers currently only perform steady-state measurements and probe averaged properties over many collision events between spin excitations in thermodynamic equilibrium, while the exact picture of re-equilibration of these excitations remains unknown. In this paper, we report on the design and implementation of a time-resolved laser–neutron pump–probe capability at hybrid spectrometer (beamline 14-B) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This capability allows us to excite out-of-equilibrium magnons with a nanosecond pulsed laser source and probe the resulting dynamics using INS. Here, we discussed technical aspects to implement such a capability in a neutron beamline, including choices of suitable neutron instrumentation and material systems, laser excitation scheme, experimental configurations, and relevant firmware and software development to allow for time-synchronized pump–probe measurements. We demonstrated that the laser-induced nonequilibrium structure factor is able to be resolved by INS in a quantum magnet. In conclusion, the method developed in this work will provide SNS with advanced capabilities for performing out-of-equilibrium measurements, opening up an entirely new research direction to study out-of-equilibrium phenomena using neutrons.
