Ion Current Density Study of the NASA-300M and NASA-457Mv2 Hall Thrusters

NASA Glenn Research Center is developing a Hall thruster in the 15-50 kW range to support future NASA missions. As a part of the process, the performance and plume characteristics of the NASA-300M, a 20-kW Hall thruster, and the NASA-457Mv2, a 50-kW Hall thruster, were evaluated. The collected data will be used to improve the fidelity of the JPL modeling tool, Hall2De, which will then be used to aid the design of the 15-50 kW Hall thruster. This paper gives a detailed overview of the Faraday probe portion of the plume characterization study. The Faraday probe in this study is a near-field probe swept radially at many axial locations downstream of the thruster exit plane. Threshold-based integration limits with threshold values of 1/e, 1/e(sup 2), and 1/e(sup 3) times the local peak current density are tried for the purpose of ion current integration and divergence angle calculation. The NASA-300M is operated at 7 conditions and the NASA-457Mv2 at 14 conditions. These conditions span discharge voltages of 200 to 500 V and discharge power of 10 to 50 kW. The ion current density profiles of the near-field plume originating from the discharge channel are discovered to strongly resemble Gaussian distributions. A novel analysis approach involving a form of ray tracing is used to determine an effective point of origin for the near-field plume. In the process of performing this analysis, definitive evidence is discovered that showed the near-field plume is bending towards the thruster centerline.

Scheduling revisited workstations in integrated-circuit fabrication

The cost of building new semiconductor wafer fabrication factories has grown rapidly, and a state-of-the-art fab may cost 250 million dollars or more. Obtaining an acceptable return on this investment requires high productivity from the fabrication facilities. This paper describes the Photo Dispatcher system which was developed to make machine-loading recommendations on a set of key fab machines. Dispatching policies that generally perform well in job shops (e.g., Shortest Remaining Processing Time) perform poorly for workstations such as photolithography which are visited several times by the same lot of silicon wafers. The Photo Dispatcher evaluates the history of workloads throughout the fab and identifies bottleneck areas. The scheduler then assigns priorities to lots depending on where they are headed after photolithography. These priorities are designed to avoid starving bottleneck workstations and to give preference to lots that are headed to areas where they can be processed with minimal waiting. Other factors considered by the scheduler to establish priorities are the nearness of a lot to the end of its process flow and the time that the lot has already been waiting in queue. Simulations that model the equipment and products in one of Texas Instrument's wafer fabs show the Photo Dispatcher can produce a 10 percent improvement in the time required to fabricate integrated circuits.

Intelligent Work Process Engineering System

Optimizing performance on work activities and processes requires metrics of performance for management to monitor and analyze in order to support further improvements in efficiency, effectiveness, safety, reliability and cost. Information systems are therefore required to assist management in making timely, informed decisions regarding these work processes and activities. Currently information systems regarding Space Shuttle maintenance and servicing do not exist to make such timely decisions. The work to be presented details a system which incorporates various automated and intelligent processes and analysis tools to capture organize and analyze work process related data, to make the necessary decisions to meet KSC organizational goals. The advantages and disadvantages of design alternatives to the development of such a system will be discussed including technologies, which would need to bedesigned, prototyped and evaluated.

In-situ resonant band engineering of solution-processed semiconductors generates high performance n-type thermoelectric nano-inks

Thermoelectric devices possess enormous potential to reshape the global energy landscape by converting waste heat into electricity, yet their commercial implementation has been limited by their high cost to output power ratio. No single “champion” thermoelectric material exists due to a broad range of material-dependent thermal and electrical property optimization challenges. While the advent of nanostructuring provided a general design paradigm for reducing material thermal conductivities, there exists no analogous strategy for homogeneous, precise doping of materials. Here, we demonstrate a nanoscale interface-engineering approach that harnesses the large chemically accessible surface areas of nanomaterials to yield massive, finely-controlled, and stable changes in the Seebeck coefficient, switching a poor nonconventional p- type thermoelectric material, tellurium, into a robust n -type material exhibiting stable properties over months of testing. These remodeled, n -type nanowires display extremely high power factors (~500 µW m -1 K -2 ) that are orders of magnitude higher than their bulk p -type counterparts.

Exploring innovative pathway for SRF cavity fabrication

This article shows a study on an alternative pathway for the fabrication of a complete 1.3 GHz SRF cavity, aiming at improving production reliability, reducing the use of chemical polishing (EP or BCP) which is a costly and safety-critical step, and preserving surface quality after forming. Unlike the conventional pathway, the fabrication process is performed after polishing. This point is crucial as the used polishing technology could be applied only to flat geometries. The performed investigation demonstrates that damages during the fabrication process are considered minor, localized, and limited to the near-surface. Moreover, these studies confirm that the damaged layer (100-200 µm) is mainly caused by the rolling process, and not by the subsequent fabrication steps. A laser confocal microscope and SEM-EBSD technique were used to compare samples before and after forming. The preliminary results are discussed and presented in this paper.

On the determination of the long period tidal perturbations in the elements of artificial earth satellites

The magnitude of the tidal effects depends upon the elastic properties of the earth as described by Love numbers. The Love numbers appear as the coefficients in the expansion of the exterior tidal potential in terms of spherical harmonics (in Maxwellian form). A single averaging process was performed only along the parallels of latitude. This process preserves additional long period tidal effects (with periods of a few days or more). It also eliminates the short period effects with periods of one day or less.

Doppler lidar processing for atmospheric turbulence measurements

A Doppler lidar is described, its processing methods are characterized, and two alternate techniques are considered. The described system uses a CO2 laser transmitting at 10.6 microns and a bank of narrow band filters for the spectrum analysis. Typical results obtained with this system are presented. The two alternate techniques involve computation of the discrete spectrum by use of the discrete Fourier transform. The first technique involves single-pulse processing and incoherent integration, while the second technique performs coherent processing on the train of received pulses.

Initial development and performance evaluation of a process for formation of dense carbon by pyrolysis of methane

The three steps in pyrolytic carbon formation are: (1) gaseous hydrocarbon polymerization and aromatic formation; (2) gas-phase condensation and surface adsorption/impingement of polyaromatic hydrocarbon; and (3) final dehydration to carbon. The structure of the carbon in the various stages of formation is examined. The apparatuses and experimental procedures for the pyrolysis of methane in a 60 cm long quartz reactor tube at temperatures ranging from 1400-1600 K are described. The percentage of carbon converted and its density are calculated and tabularly presented. The results reveal that dense carbon formation is maximized and soot eliminated by this procedure. It is observed that conversion efficiency depends on the composition of the inlet gas and conversion increases with increasing temperature. Based on the experimental data a three-man carbon reactor subsystem (CRS) is developed; the functions of the Sabatier Methanation Reactor, two carbon formation reactors and fluid handling components of the CRS are analyzed. The CRS forms 16 kg of carbon at a rate of 0.8 kg/day for 20 days in a two percent volume density quartz wool packing at temperature of 1500-1600 K.

The effect of process conditions on the performance of epitaxial InP solar cells

Indium phosphide solar cells have a higher resistance to electron irradiation than Si or GaAs cells of comparable junction depth. As a result, there is much interest in the use of this material for space applications. Cells of this material were made in bulk InP by a number of techniques, including ion implantation, direct diffusion in sealed ampoules, and by open tube diffusion. However, it is generally considered that the epitaxial approach will be superior to all of these techniques. The epitaxy of InP is considerably more difficult than that of gallium arsenide, for a number of reasons. Perhaps the most important is the fact that the native oxides of Indium are extremely difficult to remove, as compared to that of Gallium. In addition, thermal treatments for the desorption of these oxides often result in the formation of phosphorus vacancies and free indium on the surface. Thus, inadequate sample preparation before epitaxy, poor reactor cleaning procedures, or poor transition procedures between the growth of successive layers, all give rise to trap phenomena and to high interface recombination velocities. Moreover, the lifetime of the grown material is dominated by the occurrence of native defects, so that it is a strong function of growth parameters. These problems are of special interest to the fabrication of solar cells, where long life-time, combined with the absence of traps, is highly desirable. A study of this problem is described using a non-invasive diagnostic technique which was developed.
