Etching-assisted upcycling of Ni-lean to Ni-rich cathode materials

Upcycling is recognized as a sustainable recycling approach for spent lithium-ion batteries. However, existing upcycling methods typically involve intricate pretreatment or post-treatment steps, complicating their practical application. Here, in this study, we propose a straightforward, etching-assisted upcycling method that effectively transforms polycrystalline Ni-lean cathodes into high-performance single crystal Ni-rich cathodes. During the etching step, nickel acetate was dissolved into acetic acid and then polycrystalline NMC111 are etched in the solution. Finally, polycrystalline NMC111 are converted into single crystal particles coated with amorphous nickel acetate. This significantly enhances elemental diffusion during subsequent sintering by minimizing both particle size and the contact distance between NMC111 and nickel acetate. As elemental diffusion is improved and acetate ions decompose completely during sintering, the process requires neither additional pretreatment nor post-treatment. The resulting cathode materials (Etched-UP622) exhibit superior structural and electrochemical properties compared to the Control622, achieving an energy density of 719.7 Wh/kg, approximately 56.7 mAh/g higher than Control622 and 125.5 Wh/kg higher than NMC111. Etched-UP622 also delivers higher discharge capacity, improved rate performance and cycling stability, surpassing Control622 and NMC111. Meanwhile, NMC811 also can be synthesized by the proposed strategy, and the discharge capacity can reach 166.9 mAh/g at 1C, similar to 14 mAh/g higher than Control811. Overall, this etching-assisted strategy simplifies the upcycling process and offers a scalable, sustainable route for producing high-quality cathode materials.

Near-Field Passive Wireless Sensor for High-Temperature Metal Corrosion Monitoring

This work focuses on the fabrication and evaluation of a passive wireless sensor for the monitoring of the temperature and corrosion of a metal material at high temperatures. An inductor–capacitor (LC) resonator sensor was fabricated through the screen printing of Ag-based inks on dense polycrystalline Al 2 O 3 substrates. The LC design was modeled using the ANSYS HFSS modeling package, with the LC passive wireless sensors operating at frequencies from 70 to 100 MHz. The wireless response of the LC was interrogated and received by a radio frequency signal generator and spectrum analyzer at temperatures from 50 to 800 °C in real time. The corrosion kinetics of the Cu 110 was characterized through thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis and microscopy images, and the oxide thickness growth was then correlated to the wireless sensor signal under isothermal conditions at 800 °C. The results showed that the wireless signal was consistent with the corrosion kinetics and temperature, indicating that these two characteristics can be further deconvoluted in the future. In addition, the sensor also showed a magnitude- and frequency-dependent response to crack/spallation events in the oxide corrosion layer, permitting the in situ wireless identification of these catastrophic events on the metal surface at high temperatures.

Synthesis and electrical transport properties of superconducting platinum silicide thin films and devices

Here, we evaluate the material characteristics of superconducting platinum silicide (PtSi) thin films as candidate materials for superconducting quantum information devices compatible with silicon technology. These films were synthesized using magnetron sputtering under ultrahigh vacuum conditions, followed by rapid thermal annealing. Polycrystalline PtSi films synthesized by this method have the favorable properties of superconducting critical temperature of 0.95 K and relatively long zero-temperature Ginzburg-Landau coherence length of 76 nm. We further studied coplanar microbridge devices fabricated by electron beam lithography and chlorine-free reactive ion etching, finding that the temperature-dependent critical current density follows the Ginzburg Landau depairing mechanism.

Exceeding 200 ns Lifetimes in Polycrystalline CdTe Solar Cells

CdTe photovoltaics has achieved one of the lowest levelized costs of electricity among all energy sources. However, for decades, carrier lifetimes have been inferior to those of other prevalent solar cell materials. This quality has inhibited common methods to improve solar cell efficiency such as back-surface fields, electron reflectors, or bifacial solar cells. In this work, a significant increase in carrier lifetime to values exceeding 200 ns in fully functional CdTe solar cells is demonstrated. The increased lifetime is achieved by large CdSeTe grains at the absorber/emitter interface, intragrain passivation in the absorber layer, and chemical passivation by forming nanoscale oxidized tellurium species at the transparent conducting oxide interface. The carrier lifetime is correlated to the open-circuit voltage and enables paths for back-surface manipulation and novel cell architectures to further improve CdTe photovoltaic performance.

Molten Salt Synthesis of Increased (100)-Facet and Polycrystalline Nickel Oxide Nanoparticles for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Impact of Facet and Crystallinity on Electrocatalysis

Nickel oxide nanocubes with increased (100) surface facet presence (NiO(100)) were synthesized through a molten salt synthesis procedure to probe their oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity in order to investigate the relationship between the surface facet and OER performance. While altering the synthesis parameters to decrease NiO(100) particle sizes and agglomeration, a polycrystalline NiO nanoparticle system formed from using Li2O as a Lux-Flood base (labelled Li2O-MSS NiO, where MSS stands for molten salt synthesis). This novel synthesis was further elaborated and the obtained materials were also tested for OER activity. After thorough structural characterization to determine crystallinity, lattice spacings, and elemental distribution, their OER activity was compared versus high surface area NiO(111) nanosheets in a three-electrode rotating disk electrode (RDE) system. The activity trend of (111) > Li2O-MSS > (100) was observed. This decrease in activity of the nanocube and polycrystalline samples was explained by differences between theoretical and experimental conditions, differences in ink rheology and resulting catalyst layer properties, and significant agglomeration seen in the imaging of the sample. Methods for improving the OER activity of these samples are discussed in the conclusion of this study.

Disorder driven variations in magnetoresistance and planar Hall effect in Bi 2 Te 3 thin films

The degenerately doped sesquichalcogenide Bi 2 Te 3 , a well-known thermoelectric material, has attracted much attention in recent years as a topological insulator in which conducting surface states lead to exotic electronic transport. Here, in this study, we report the observation of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and planar Hall effect (PHE) in polycrystalline thin films of Bi 2 Te 3 over a broad range of temperature and magnetic field strength. The values of AMR, PHE and the Hall mobility (μ H ) are compared with results of similar measurements on single crystals and epitaxial films of Bi 2 Te 3 , where these properties are understood in the framework of electronic transport in the topologically protected conducting surface states. Our textured polycrystalline films show a robust metallic character with a carrier density (n s ) and mobility μ H of 9×10 20 cm -3 and 16.7 cm 2 V -1 s -1 respectively. This carrier density is higher and the mobility lower by an order of magnitude compared to the reported values of n s and μ H in epitaxial films and single crystals. However, we see a comparable AMR and PHE in our films for which the concept of conducting surface states is ill-defined due to their polycrystallinity and disordered structure. We suggest that an anisotropic backscattering of charge carriers in the strongly spin – orbit coupled electronic states of this heavy-metal-based non-magnetic compound may lead to the measured resistivity anisotropy. The observation of AMR and PHE in polycrystalline films may be important for scalable production of Bi 2 Te 3 based AMR and PHE sensors of magnetic fields.

Magnetic and transport properties of Fe-doped Weyl semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2

Ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 has recently attracted a lot of interest on account of its large non-saturating magnetoresistance and the high carrier mobility common to topological semimetals. Moreover, the material also provides a platform for studying the interplay between the intrinsic magnetism and topological band structures, which generates a significant anomalous Hall effect. Chemical doping is the usual approach to adjust materials’ properties, and it can lead to fascinating results. Here, we present the influence of Fe-doping on the magnetic and transport properties of polycrystalline Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 . The Fe-doping suppresses the sample’s magnetic order, increases the electrical resistivity, results in a skew-scattering contribution to the anomalous Hall effect and Fe impurities cause the Kondo effect. In addition, we report on the impact of Fe-doping on the magnetoresistance of Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , where Fe-doping leads to a dramatic decline in magnetoresistance. Furthermore, the hysteresis behavior in the low magnetic field region, detected previously in nanoflake samples only, is observed in both pure and Fe-doped Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 bulk samples. Finally, our findings serve as a reference and source of inspiration for future chemical doping research on topological semimetals.

Synthesis and Characterization of Bulk Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 2 and Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 3

The recent reports of superconductivity in Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 2 /SrTiO 3 heterostructures have reinvigorated interest in potential superconductivity of low-oxidation state nickelates. Synthesis of Ni 1+ -containing compounds is notoriously difficult. In the current work, a combined sol-gel combustion and high-pressure annealing technique was employed to prepare polycrystalline perovskite Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 3 (x = 0, 0.1, and 0.2). Metal nitrates and metal acetates were used as starting materials, and the latter were found to be superior to the former in terms of safety and reactivity. The Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 3 compounds were subsequently reduced to Nd1-xSrxNiO2 using calcium hydride in a sealed, evacuated quartz tube. To understand the synthesis pathway, the evolution from NdNiO3 to NdNiO 2 was monitored using in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction during the reduction process. Electrical transport properties were consistent with an insulator-metal transition occurring between x = 0 and 0.1 for Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 3 . Superconductivity was not observed in our bulk samples of Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 2 . Neutron diffraction experiments at 3 and 300 K were performed on Nd 0.9 Sr 0.1 NiO 2 , in which no magnetic Bragg reflections were observed, and the results of structural Rietveld refinement are provided.

Analysis of neptunium oxides produced through modified direct denitration

Production of neptunium-237 ( 237 Np) target materials for plutonium-238 ( 238 Pu) radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) for deep space exploration requires advanced chemistry and engineering development. Currently, the domestic Pu-238 Supply Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory produces neptunium dioxide (NpO 2 ) for target material using a modified direct denitration (MDD) flowsheet. Although the chemistry, reaction mechanisms, and product characteristics of MDD are well understood for uranium, corresponding studies of the neptunium system are still needed to continue optimization of target material properties, production equipment design, and production flowsheets. Here, the objective of this work is to characterize crystalline phases, morphology, surface texture, and particle size of NpO 2 produced via MDD reactions. Solid-phase characterization techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD) and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), were employed to achieve this objective. Subsequent data processing using the Morphological Analysis for Material Attribution (MAMA) software was performed to analyze particle morphology and size. Broadly, the powders were found to contain a mixture of NpO 2 and Np 2 O 5 after denitration with a variety of morphologies. After high-firing, the product was found to be NpO 2 with a typical polycrystalline oxide morphology and a grain size ranging from 0.72 to 0.94 µm. These analyses provide knowledge on the reaction pathway for a non-traditional NpO 2 synthesis method and offer additional unique insight into production-scale environments for transuranic materials.

Thermoelectric Performance of the 2D Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 Semiconductor

Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 , a 2D compound, is a direct band gap semiconductor with an optical band gap of 0.25 eV, and is a promising thermoelectric material. Single-phase Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 is prepared by a scalable ball-milling and annealing process and the highly densified polycrystalline samples are prepared by spark plasma sintering. Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 shows a p-type semiconductor transport behavior and exhibits an intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity of ~0.48 Wm -1 K -1 (cross-plane) at 573 K. The first-principles density functional theory calculations indicate that such low lattice thermal conductivity is derived from the interactions between acoustic phonons and low-lying optical phonons, local vibrations of Bi, the low Debye temperature and strong anharmonicity result from the unique 2D crystal structure and metavalent bonding of Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 . The Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 exhibits an optimal figure of merit ZT of ~0.51 at 623 K, which can be further enhanced by the substitution of Bi with Pb. Pb doping leads to a large increase in power factor S 2 σ, from ~4.0 μWcm -1 K- 2 of Bi 2 Si 2 Te 6 to ~8.0 μWcm -1 K -2 of Bi 1.98 Pb 0.02 Si 2 Te 6 at 775 K, owing to the increase in carrier concentration. Moreover, Pb doping induces a further reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity to ~0.38 Wm -1 K -1 (cross-plane) at 623 K in Bi 1.98 Pb 0.02 Si 2 Te 6 ,. The simultaneous optimization of the power factor and lattice thermal conductivity achieves a peak ZT of ~0.90 at 723 K and a high average ZT of ~0.66 at 400–773 K in Bi 1.98 Pb 0.02 Si 2 Te 6 .

Upcycling Mixed Spent Ni-Lean Cathodes into Ni-Rich Polycrystalline Cathodes

Sustainable battery recycling is vital for conserving resources and reducing environmental impacts. Current open- and closed-loop recycling strategies often focus on recovering individual components, making the reuse of mixed cathode materials a complex challenge. Meanwhile, the research on upcycling has been limited to using pristine cathode feedstocks and virgin materials for synthesis. Here, to address this issue, we present an upcycling approach for spent Ni-lean mixed cathode materials that integrate an upcycling hydrometallurgical recycling process with traditional hydrometallurgical methods. This strategy achieves a utilization of 92.31 mol % of recycled materials, enabling the regeneration of Ni-rich cathode materials while significantly reducing the reliance on virgin resources. The regenerated 83Ni cathode materials demonstrate physical properties comparable to those produced from virgin materials. Electrochemical evaluations using single-layer pouch cells show that both recycled and virgin cathodes exhibit initial specific capacity close to 201.1 mAh/g and maintain approximately 88 % capacity retention after 500 cycles. Additionally, 2Ah cells confirmed these findings, delivering 85 % capacity retention after about 900 cycles. Techno-economic analysis demonstrates notable environmental benefits, including reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, achieving 232.75 MJ/kg of product, which is 8.6 % lower than traditional methods and comparable to direct upcycling. Furthermore, the upcycling hydrometallurgical recycling process generates the highest profit, proving its economic viability. This scalable and versatile process is adaptable to varying transition metal compositions, facilitating a closed-loop recycling system that bridges mixed spent cathodes with next-generation cathode materials, and offers a sustainable solution for managing waste battery materials.

Learning macroscopic internal variables and history dependence from microscopic models

This paper concerns the study of history dependent phenomena in heterogeneous materials in a two-scale setting where the material is specified at a fine microscopic scale of heterogeneities that is much smaller than the coarse macroscopic scale of application. Here, we specifically study a polycrystalline medium where each grain is governed by crystal plasticity while the solid is subjected to macroscopic dynamic loads. The theory of homogenization allows us to solve the macroscale problem directly with a constitutive relation that is defined implicitly by the solution of the microscale problem. However, the homogenization leads to a highly complex history dependence at the macroscale, one that can be quite different from that at the microscale. In this paper, we examine the use of machine-learning, and especially deep neural networks, to harness data generated by repeatedly solving the finer scale model to: (i) gain insights into the history dependence and the macroscopic internal variables that govern the overall response; and (ii) to create a computationally efficient surrogate of its solution operator, that can directly be used at the coarser scale with no further modeling. We do so by introducing a recurrent neural operator (RNO), and show that: (i) the architecture and the learned internal variables can provide insight into the physics of the macroscopic problem; and (ii) that the RNO can provide multiscale, specifically FE 2 , accuracy at a cost comparable to a conventional empirical constitutive relation.

Thermal Properties of the Very Low Thermal Conductivity Ternary Chalcogenide Cu 4 Bi 4 M 9 (M = S, Se)

Temperature-dependent thermal properties of phase-pure polycrystalline ternary chalcogenides Cu 4 Bi 4 S 9 and Cu 4 Bi 4 Se 9 are reported. The structure and bonding in these materials result in very low thermal conductivity values (<0.8 W m -1 K -1 at room temperature) for both materials. The lattice contribution, Debye temperatures, and Sommerfeld coefficient are obtained from low-temperature heat capacity data that also indicate very small electronic contributions to the heat capacity for these materials. This study aids in the identification of new nontoxic, earth-abundant resistive ternary chalcogenide materials with low thermal conductivity for potential thermal barrier coating and rewriteable storage applications.

Exceptional magnetic and magnetoelastic behavior of rare-earth non-centrosymmetric Sm 7 Pd 3

Magnetic compounds possessing an intrinsic combination of near-zero magnetization with high magnetic anisotropy are highly desirable for spinronic applications and memory recording. A comprehensive study of Sm 7 Pd 3 binary compound uncovered a unique combination of strong magnetoelastic behavior, very low net magnetization, and exceptionally high magnetic coercivity. The temperature-dependent X-ray synchrotron powder diffraction study indicates the abrupt changes in the compound's lattice parameters at the magnetic ordering temperature of T C =169 K, although the crystal structure remains non-centrosymmetric hexagonal Th 7 Fe 3 -type down to 6 K. Density functional theory calculations confirm high intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Sm 7 Pd 3 , which explains the extremely large coercivity of the polycrystalline sample, up to H cr = 130 kOe at 2 K. In conclusion, this discovery brings to life a novel class of highly anisotropic materials that are distinctly different from known spintronic materials, making them interesting future systems for magnetic memory research.

Magnetic Interactions of the Centrosymmetric Skyrmion Material Gd 2 PdSi 3

The experimental realization of magnetic skyrmion crystals in centrosymmetric materials has been driven by theoretical understanding of how a delicate balance of anisotropy and frustration can stabilize topological spin structures in applied magnetic fields. Recently, the centrosymmetric material Gd 2 PdSi 3 was shown to host a field-induced skyrmion crystal, but the skyrmion stabilization mechanism remains unclear. Here, we employ neutron-scattering measurements on an isotopically enriched polycrystalline Gd 2 PdSi 3 sample to quantify the interactions that drive skyrmion formation. Our analysis reveals spatially extended interactions in triangular planes, and large ferromagnetic interplanar magnetic interactions that are modulated by the Pd/Si superstructure. The skyrmion crystal emerges from a zero-field helical magnetic order with magnetic moments perpendicular to the magnetic propagation vector, indicating that the magnetic dipolar interaction plays a significant role. To conclude, our experimental results establish an interaction space that can promote skyrmion formation, facilitating identification and design of centrosymmetric skyrmion materials.

The surface of halide perovskites from nano to bulk

The surface of a semiconductor often has a key role in determining its properties. Here, for metal halide perovskites, understanding the surface features and their impact on the materials and devices is becoming increasingly important. At length scales down to the nanoscale regime, surface features become dominant in regulating the properties of perovskite materials, owing to the high surface-to-volume ratio. For perovskite bulk films in the micrometre range, defects and structural disorder readily form at the surface and affect device performance. Through concerted efforts to optimize processing techniques, high-quality perovskite thin films can now be fabricated with monolayer-like polycrystalline grains or even single crystals. Surface defects therefore remain the major obstacle to progress, pushing surface studies to the forefront of perovskite research. In this Review, we summarize and assess recent advances in the understanding of perovskite surfaces and surface strategies towards improving perovskite materials and the efficiency and stability of perovskite devices.

Direct evidence of low work function on SrVO 3 cathode using thermionic electron emission microscopy and high-field ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy

Perovskite SrVO 3 has recently been proposed as a novel electron emission cathode material. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest multiple low work function surfaces, and recent experimental efforts have consistently demonstrated effective work functions of ~2.7 eV for polycrystalline samples, both results suggesting, but not directly confirming, that some fraction of even lower work function surface is present. In this work, thermionic electron emission microscopy (ThEEM) and high-field ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) are used to study the local work function distribution and measure the work function of a partially oriented- (110)-SrVO 3 perovskite oxide cathode surface. Our results show direct evidence of low work function patches of about 2.0 eV on the cathode surface, with a corresponding onset of observable thermionic emission at 750 °C. We hypothesize that, in our ThEEM and UPS experiments, the high applied electric field suppresses the patch field effect, enabling the direct measurement of local work functions. This measured work function of 2.0 eV is comparable to the previous DFT-calculated work function values of the SrVO-terminated (110) SrVO 3 surface (2.3 eV) and SrO-terminated (100) surface (1.9 eV). The measured 2.0 eV value is also much lower than the work function for the (001) LaB 6 single crystal cathode (~2.7 eV) and comparable to the effective work function of B-type dispenser cathodes (~2.1 eV). If SrVO 3 thermionic emitters can be engineered to access domains of this low 2.0 eV work function, they have the potential to significantly improve thermionic emitter-based technologies.

First Principles Study of Aluminum Doped Polycrystalline Silicon as a Potential Anode Candidate in Li‐ion Batteries

Addressing sustainable energy storage remains crucial for transitioning to renewable sources. While Li‐ion batteries have made significant contributions, enhancing their capacity through alternative materials remains a key challenge. Micro‐sized silicon is a promising anode material due to its tenfold higher theoretical capacity compared to conventional graphite. However, its substantial volumetric expansion during cycling impedes practical application due to mechanical failure and rapid capacity fading. A novel approach is proposed to mitigate this issue by incorporating trace amounts of aluminum into the micro‐sized silicon electrode using ball milling. Density functional theory (DFT) is employed to establish a theoretical framework elucidating how grain boundary sliding, a key mechanism involved in preventing mechanical failure is facilitated by the presence of trace aluminum at grain boundaries. This, in turn, reduces stress accumulation within the material, reducing the likelihood of failure. To validate the theoretical predictions, capacity retention experiments are conducted on undoped and Al‐doped micro‐sized silicon samples. In conclusion, the results demonstrate significantly reduced capacity fading in the doped sample, corroborating the theoretical framework and showcasing the potential of aluminum doping for improved Li‐ion battery performance.
