Plasma-free hydrogenation of oxygen-terminated polycrystalline diamond as determined by circular transmission line measurements (CTLM)

Here, we developed a process to fully hydrogen-terminate diamond by annealing in forming gas. The surface was characterized using circular transmission line measurements (CTLMs) to evaluate the onset and degree of hydrogen termination. No hydrogenation occurred at temperatures at or below 500 °C. Hydrogenation occurs after annealing for 5 min at temperatures between 600 and 1000 °C, with complete hydrogenation achieved at 1000 °C, which showed the same sheet resistance as diamond terminated in a hydrogen plasma. Annealing at temperatures lower than 1000 °C resulted in only partial hydrogenation but can be compensated by increasing the anneal time. At temperatures exceeding 1100 °C, the sheet resistance suddenly and drastically increases, indicating instability of a hydrogen-terminated diamond surface at elevated temperatures under forming gas. The activation energy was determined to be 1.20eV. SEM inspection showed that annealing in hydrogen produced significantly reduced surface roughness compared to diamond surfaces hydrogenated in a H 2 plasma.

Modeling Coupled Chemo-Mechanical Behavior of Randomly Oriented NMC811 Polycrystalline Li-Ion Battery Cathodes

This paper develops a three-dimensional, transient, chemo-mechanical model that predicts the performance of single secondary particle Li-ion battery cathodes. The secondary particles are composed of numerous (approximately 60) randomly oriented single-crystal primary particles. The model incorporates concentration-dependent and anisotropic material properties. As much as possible, electrochemical, transport, and structural properties for crystalline NMC811 (Li x Ni 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 ) are taken from prior publications. Weak Van der Waals bonding between primary particles is modeled empirically using a spring analogy, which enables local primary-particle separations (disintegration) and subsequent reattachments. The model fully couples Li diffusion and the mechanical response. Results include predictions of local Li-concentrations and stresses. High stresses are found near grain boundaries, especially when the lattice orientations are greatly misaligned. Particle separations are characterized in terms of a damage parameter. The model is used to predict the effects of design and operating conditions, including charge/discharge rates, cycling scenarios, and particle sizes.

Optical, electrical, and EPR studies of polycrystalline Al:Cr:ZnSe gain elements

Transition metal-doped II-VI (TM:II-VI) chalcogenides are well-known laser materials for optically pumped middle-infrared lasers. Cr:ZnSe is a key representative of this class of transition metal doped II-VI gain media and is arguably considered the material of choice for optically pumped middle-infrared lasers. In addition to effective mid-IR lasing under optical excitation, these crystals, being wide-band semiconductors, hold the potential for direct electrical excitation. One way to form n-type conductivity in ZnSe crystals is by annealing them in a melt of Zn-Al alloy. However, this annealing of Cr:ZnSe crystals results in their purification and transfer of chromium to the melt of Zn-Al alloy. In this article, we report on optimizing the doping technique for providing n-type conductivity in Al:Cr:ZnSe crystals while preserving the chromium concentration. Al:Cr:ZnSe samples with resistivities ranging from 10.8 to 992 Ω-cm were fabricated. While the 2 + valence state of Cr is typically dominant in Cr:ZnSe, both Cr 2+ and Cr + were detected in Al:Cr:ZnSe samples. The maximum level of Cr + concentration was measured to be 4 × 10 18 cm -3 .

Effect of Processing on Precipitation Kinetics in Nano Polycrystalline 7075 Aluminum Alloy

Fairmount Technologies (FT) seeks to optimize the thermomechanical processing of Aluminum Alloy 7075. The target yield strength is 20% higher than commercially available 7075-T6 temper sheet which will enable structural light weighting by a similar magnitude and reduce the carbon footprint of the transportation sector. To reduce processing cost and make this commercially viable, it is important to understand physical mechanisms driving microstructural changes. A mesoscale phase-field model seeded with experimentally measured microstructures and assessed thermodynamic and kinetic properties will be developed and exercised using HPC at PNNL. It will account for the effect of deformation, temperature, and chemistry on precipitation kinetics in nanocrystalline microstructures. Our objective is to understand this “stress-aging” coupling by performing parametric simulations with mesoscale models for a better understanding of GP zone and η' formation in nanocrystalline 7075 Al. This will help FT optimize processing schedules to achieve desired microstructures that increase both strength and ductility.

Synthesis and characterization of properties of (Tb1/3Mo2/3)2AlC polycrystalline

When molecules, atoms, or ions are grouped in a highly ordered microscopic structure to form a crystal lattice that stretches in all directions, the result is a solid material known as a crystal or crystalline solid. They are arranged in a highly ordered microscopic structure to form a crystal lattice. The smallest group of particles in material that constitutes this repeating pattern is unit cell of the structure. The unit cell is a repeating unit formed by the vectors spanning the points of a lattice.
