Apparatus for extraction and separation of a preferentially photo-dissociated molecular isotope into positive and negative ions by means of an electric field

Molecules of one and the same isotope were preferentially photodissociated by a laser and an ultraviolet source, or by multiphoton absorption of laser radiation. The resultant ions were confined with a magnetic field, moved in opposite directions by an electric field, extracted from the photodissociation region by means of screening and accelerating grids, and collected in ducts.

On the dissociation of nitrogen by electron impact and by EUV photo-absorption

The dissociation of N2 by electron impact and by absorption of EUV photons was studied experimentally. It was shown that most of the N2 molecules excited to singlet states in the 12.5-14.86 eV range are depopulated by predissociation and not by the emission of EUV photons and that this is the principal mechanism by which N2 is dissociated by solar EUV absorption and by electron impact. The experiments provide a physical explanation for the near absence of N2 band radiation in airglow and auroral EUV spectra, and rule out the excitation of EUV radiation as a major factor in the overall energy economy of an auroral substorm.

Low Cost Solar Array Project: Composition Measurements by Analytical Photo Catalysis

The applicability of the photon catalysis technique for effecting composition analysis of silicon samples is discussed. A detector for the impurities Al, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ti, V, Mo and Zr is evaluated. During the first reporting period Al, Cr, Fe, and Mn were detected with the photon catalysis method. The best fluorescence lines to monitor and determine initial sensitivities to each of these elements by atomic absorption calibration were established. In the course of these tests vapor pressure curves for these four pure substances were also mapped. Ti and Si were detected. The best lines to monitor were catalogued and vapor pressure curves were determined. Attempts to detect vanadium were unsuccessful due to the refractory nature of this element and the limited temperature range of the evaporator.

Tests of low background photo conductors

In support of two infrared astronomy space projects, the IRAS satellite and the IRT on Spacelab 2, low-background tests were carried out on the performance and characterization of Si:Ga, Si:As, Si:Sb and Ge:Ga photoconductive detectors. These test results represent a useful appraisal of this family of detectors when operated at 1.8-4.2 K and at background power levels of 10 to the -14th to 10 to the -13th W. In addition to detector performance data, results are also presented on cryogenically cooled MOSFET amplifiers operated in the source follower and in the balanced-dc-TIA configurations.

Photo-sputtering of ice and hydrogen around Saturn's rings

It is noted that rocketborne UV spectroscopic measurements have shown that a dense cloud on atomic hydrogen surrounds Saturn which has been interpreted as being associated with the Saturn ring system. Several ring sources of atomic hydrogen have been proposed, but abundance and lifetime estimates require a source which is much more potent than those previously considered. An alternate mechanism is proposed which satisfies this source requirement and involves photodissociation of surface water molecules on the icy ring material. The source rate for this mechanism is within a factor of two of the required value and is within the experimental error of the measurement.

Aerial Infrared Photos for Citrus Growers

Handbook advises on benefits and methods of aerial photography with color infrared film. Interpretation of photographs is discussed in detail. Necessary equipment for interpretation is described--light table, magnifying lenses, and microfiche viewers, for example. Advice is given on rating tree condition; identifying effects of diseases, insects, and nematodes; and evaluating effects of soil, water, and weather.

Ambient ammonia measurements using laser photo-acoustic spectroscopy

Ammonia concentrations reached minimal levels (approximately 0.1 ppb) in early winter, followed by a sudden later winter increase. A direct relationship between ambient ammonia levels and air temperature was inferred from the data (linear correlation coefficient r=0.53). Ammonia concentrations were determined to be directly related to the absolute humidity of the air (r=0.72); a weaker relationship between ammonia concentrations and relative humidity was discovered (r=0.37). The data also indicated that ammonia levels were generally higher within continental air masses than those of maritime origin. Soil parameters such as pH and moisture content were found to have a major bearing on the release of gaseous ammonia from soils in the region.

Extension of oblique incidence method to photo-orthotropic-elasticity

With the interpretation of isochromatic and isoclinic fringes in transparent, birefringent, orthotropic composites established, efforts were in progress to determine the individual values of the principal stresses or strains. Several methods utilize the photoelastic results only partially and rely on numerical procedures. Others attempt to obtain the required information based entirely on experimental data. The classical oblique incidence technique as applied to transversely isotropic birefringent composites, is presented. The proposed extension is verified by applying it to the problem of an orthotropic half-plane subjected to an edge-load.

Experimental investigation of shock-cell noise reduction for dual-stream nozzles in simulated flight comprehensive data report. Volume 2: Laser velocimeter data, static pressures and shadowgraph photos

Parameters which contribute to supersonic jet shock noise were investigated for the purpose of determining means to reduce such noise generation to acceptable levels. Six dual-stream test nozzles with varying flow passage and plug closure designs were evaluated under simulated flight conditions in an anechoic chamber. All nozzles had combined convergent-divergent or convergent flow passages. Mean velocity and turbulence velocity measurements of 25 selected flow conditions were performed employing a laser Doppler velocimeter. Static pressure measurements were made to define the actual convergence-divergence condition. Test point definition, tabulation of aerodynamic test conditions, velocity histograms, and shadowgraph photographs are presented. Flow visualization through shadowgraph photography can contribute to the development of an analytical prediction model for shock noise from coannular plug nozzles.

Experimental investigation of shock-cell noise reduction for single-stream nozzles in simulated flight, comprehensive data report. Volume 3: Shadowgraph photos and facility description

A total of 142 shadowgraph photographs were taken on 43 different plumes that were distributed over the six nozzle configurations using the 9.5 inch diameter collimated light beam of the shadowgraph setup. Aerodynamic flow conditions of the shadowgraph test points, the location and identification of each of the photographs, and copies of the pictures are presented.

Integrated photo-responsive metal oxide semiconductor circuit

An infrared photoresponsive element (RD) is monolithically integrated into a source follower circuit of a metal oxide semiconductor device by depositing a layer of a lead chalcogenide as a photoresistive element forming an ohmic bridge between two metallization strips serving as electrodes of the circuit. Voltage from the circuit varies in response to illumination of the layer by infrared radiation.

Photo-thermo-dissociation. I - A general mechanism for destroying molecules

Photothermodissociation (PTD) of an isolated molecule is the name of the process when a photon is absorbed by an electronic transition, the energy is transferred to the vibrations (hot molecule) and then an atom or a fragment is ejected. A statistical physics treatment is presented that goes beyond the thermal approximation and fully takes into account the isolation of the system. A model is given that permits an explicit calculation of the ejection rates of hydrogen and carbon fragments from aromatic molecules as a function of their size and internal energy. Then, the lifetime of species against PTD in different astronomical radiation fields will result when a precise dynamical evolution of their internal energy can be established.

The photo-colorimetric space as a medium for the representation of spatial data

Spatial displays and instruments are usually used in the context of vehicle guidance, but it is hard to find applicable spatial formats in information retrieval and interaction systems. Human interaction with spatial data structures and the applicability of the CIE color space to improve dialogue transparency is discussed. A proposal is made to use the color space to code spatially represented data. The semantic distances of the categories of dialogue structures or, more general, of database structures, are determined empirically. Subsequently the distances are transformed and depicted into the color space. The concept is demonstrated for a car diagnosis system, where the category cooling system could, e.g., be coded in blue, the category ignition system in red. Hereby a correspondence between color and semantic distances is achieved. Subcategories can be coded as luminance differences within the color space.
