A note on obtaining an approximate value for the period of a periodic solution of x-double prime = -V prime /x/

The first integral of x-double prime = - V prime (x) yields an integral for the period of a periodic solution, if such exists. In general, this integral cannot be evaluated. By means of an approximate solution along with the minimization of a mean-square error, one can obtain an approximate value for the period in terms of the amplitude of the motion. The calculated period agrees very well with the period obtained by means of numerical integration for the case of orbit-orbit resonance involving the motion of two satellites of a planet. The same method is applied to obtain an alternative derivation of the first Krylov-Bogoliuboff averaging method in nonlinear mechanics.

A note on photocurrents in extrinsic semiconductors

The advent of the concept of holes and careful determination of mobilities have made it possible to realize that the potential difference between the contacts of an irradiated semiconductor in the absence of current flow is due to the difference in mobility of electrons and holes. In this paper, a preliminary analysis shows that charge neutrality and zero-current condition are compatible. This situation is clarified and it is found that the equation for the electric field E in the absence of current is not absolutely correct even under low-level injection conditions. In particular, it is shown that fairly large currents can be generated by suitable light sources, currents which are entirely due to the disparity between electron and hole mobilities.

A note on the interaction of unsteady flow with an acoustic liner

The effects of a mean grazing flow on the energy exchanges involved in the interaction of a bias-flow acoustic liner with, respectively, incident sound and boundary layer turbulence are contrasted. The analysis of model problems which make use of a line vortex to simulate large scale, unsteady boundary layer structures indicates that, whereas acoustic waves may be effectively attenuated, dissipation caused by 'jetting' in the apertures of the liner can result in a net transfer of energy from the mean flow to the turbulence in the boundary layer.

A note on a corrector formula for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations

A new corrector formula for predictor-corrector methods for numerical solutions of ordinary differential equations is presented. Two considerations for choosing corrector formulas are given: (1) the coefficient in the error term and (2) its stability properties. The graph of the roots of an equation plotted against its stability region, of different values, is presented along with the tables that correspond to various corrector equations, including Hamming's and Milne and Reynolds'.

A note on the revised galactic neutron spectrum of the Ames collaborative study

Energy distributions of the neutron dose equivalents in the 0.1 to 300 Mev interval for the Ames and Hess spectra are compared. The Ames spectrum shows no evaporation peak, moves the bulk of the flux away from the region of elastic collision and spreads it more evenly over higher energies. The neutron spectrum in space does not seem to hear out the Ames model. Emulsion findings on all manned missions of the past consistently indicate that evaporation events are a prolific source of neutrons in space.

Morphofunctional correlations in the experimental study of myocardiopathies under the stress of forced restraint. Note 2: The influence of adrenal imbalance

Tests were performed with 70 rats to determine the effects of restraint on the functions and structure of the myocardium under varying conditions of adrenal imbalance. Results showed that in rats with adrenal imbalance, fasting and restraint produced the same biochemical alterations as in the controls. The morphologic alteractions, as well as their electric expression, were more varied and evident in the animals with adrenal imbalance. Persistence of the microscopic and electrocardiographic alterations after 72 hours restraint in the animals subjected to unilateral adrenalectomy suggests chronic evolution of the myocardial lesions. This proves the necessity of intact adrenals for a good adaptability to stress.

Notes on the origin of the Trojan asteroids

The dynamic plausibility of various ideas on the origin of the Trojans is briefly discussed. We take the point of view that the present, tightly bound population has secularly evolved through some mechanism from less to more tightly bound orbit configurations. The mechanisms considered are changes in the Jovian mass or semimajor axis during planetary formation, collisional interactions with external, asteroidal material, and cometary outgassing.

Note on the effect of transverse shear deformation in laminated anisotropic plates

The paper describes the development of some computer methods in applied mechanics. It begins with a distribution of primary stresses in laminated plates, followed by a determination of the associated statically consistent transverse shearing stress. The last section deals with the use of an energy principle for the utilization of these expressions for primary and transverse stresses. The purpose of this is to obtain two-dimensional constitutive equations involving transverse shear deformations and transverse shear stress resultants.

A note on the Apollo 15 green glass vitrophyres

The paper discusses the vitrophyric fraction of Apollo 15 green glasses which contain skeletal crystals of olivine. Although the crystals are uniform in composition, the coexisting glass shows a range in composition and an olivine subtraction trend. The data suggest that the vitrophyres are part of the traditional Apollo 15 green glass suite composition; the natural trend of rapid low pressure crystal-fractionation suggests that other VLT rock types cannot be derived from Apollo 15 green glass magma.

A note on the generation of phase plane plots on a digital computer

A technique is presented for generating phase plane plots on a digital computer which circumvents the difficulties associated with more traditional methods of numerical solving nonlinear differential equations. In particular, the nonlinear differential equation of operation is formulated.

A note of sound radiation from distributed sources

The power output from a normally vibrating strip radiator is expressed in alternative general forms, one of these being chosen to refine and correct some particular estimates given by Heckl for different numerical ratios of strip width to wave length. An exact and explicit calculation is effected for sinusoidal velocity profiles when the strip width equals an integer number of half wave lengths.

Note on the eigensolution of a homogeneous equation with semi-infinite domain

The 'variation-iteration' method using Green's functions to find the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions of a homogeneous Fredholm integral equation is employed for the stability analysis of fluid hydromechanics problems with a semiinfinite (infinite) domain of application. The objective of the study is to develop a suitable numerical approach to the solution of such equations in order to better understand the full set of equations for 'real-world' flow models. The study involves a search for a suitable value of the length of the domain which is a fair finite approximation to infinity, which makes the eigensolution an approximation dependent on the length of the interval chosen. In the examples investigated y = 1 = a seems to be the best approximation of infinity; for y greater than unity this method fails due to the polynomial nature of Green's functions.

A note on sound radiation into a uniformly flowing medium

The influence of a uniform cross flow on the power output from an idealized mechanical source, namely a vibrating strip set in a coplanar rigid wall, is studied within the framework of linear acoustic theory, and the time-average power output is characterized by appropriate expansions (of exact integral representations), for both small and large wave length/strip width ratios, in the subsonic flow regime. Since boundary layers are ignored, the model source envisaged furnishes only a limited accounting of fluid-acoustical coupling effects.
