Extended Range SRF Cavity Tuner for LCLS II HE Project

The off-frequency detune method is being considered to be applied in the LCLS-II-HE superconducting linac to produce multi-energy electron beams for supporting multiple undulator lines simultaneously. To deliver off-frequency operation (OFO) requirements for SRF cavity tuner must be changed. Tuner design modifications and results of the testing eight cavity/tuner system, deployed in verification cryomodule (vCM), will be presented.

Results from Extended Range SRF Cavity Tuner Tests for LCLS-II HE

The LCLS-II HE superconducting linac can produce multi-energy beams by supporting multiple undulator lines simultaneously. This could be achieved by using the cavity SRF tuner in the off-frequency detune mode. This off-frequency operation method was tested in 8 cryomodules at Fermilab at 2 K. In all tests, the tuners achieved a frequency shift of -565±80 kHz. This study will discuss cavity frequency during each step as it is being assembled in the cryomodule string and finally when it is being tested at 2 K. Tracking the cavity frequency helped enable the tuners to reach this large frequency shift. The specific procedures of tuner setting during assembly will be presented

Holographic testing with a double reference beam

Image of unstressed object is taken with reflected beam and one reference beam. Object is then stressed and second (double) exposure is made. Developed film plate provides double exposure hologram that can be projected by simultaneous illumination with both reference beams. Appearance of multiple images may be eliminated while manipulating fringe patterns.

Internal breakdown of charged spacecraft dielectrics

It is suggested that small energy discharges of low differential voltage that are associated with internal buried charge may be an important mechanism by which sorted electrostatic energy is released from dielectrics on board orbiting spacecraft. The evidence from space given by Stevens (1980) is noted, and the laboratory experimental evidence of Frederickson is cited to demonstrate that discharges occur under circumstances with no external potential drop. Previous calculations indicating that significant internal electric fields can exist in dielectrics charged with multiple-kilovolt electron beams under conditions involving little or no external potential drop are reviewed. Attention is given to the internal discharge mechanism of Meulenberg (1976), and new calculations suggesting that the space environment is conducive to the formation of the conditions required by this mechanism are presented. Experimental procedures for checking the suggestions made are developed.

Multiprism collimator

A special purpose optical collimator system which generates multiple collimated light beams with precisely related angular separation of the beams, is comprised of a stack of relatively flat plate-like refracted prisms in the form of wedges. Each prism has a specified angular deviation, mounted on top of one another in a fixture which holds the wedges so that they are adapted to operate at minimum angular deviation and thus are relatively insensitive to rotational and angular charges. A collimated sources of monochromatic light, generated for example by a helium-neon laser and a collimated beam expander, provides a common incident beam to the wedges whereupon a number equally spaced emergent beams are provided.

Effects of volume averaging on the line spectra of vertical velocity from multiple-Doppler radar observations

Calculations of the ratio of the true one-dimensional spectrum of vertical velocity and that measured with multiple-Doppler radar beams are presented. It was assumed that the effects of pulse volume averaging and objective analysis routines is replacement of a point measurement with a volume integral. A u and v estimate was assumed to be feasible when orthogonal radars are not available. Also, the target fluid was configured as having an infinite vertical dimension, zero vertical velocity at the top and bottom, and having homogeneous and isotropic turbulence with a Kolmogorov energy spectrum. The ratio obtained indicated that equal resolutions among radars yields a monotonically decreasing, wavenumber-dependent response function. A gain of 0.95 was demonstrated in an experimental situation with 40 levels. Possible errors introduced when using unequal resolution radars were discussed. Finally, it was found that, for some flows, the extent of attenuation depends on the number of vertical levels resolvable by the radars.

A dual frequency microstrip antenna for Ka band

For fixed satellite communication systems at Ka band with downlink at 17.7 to 20.2 GHz and uplink at 27.5 to 30.0 GHz, the focused optics and the unfocused optics configurations with monolithic phased array feeds have often been used to provide multiple fixed and multiple scanning spot beam coverages. It appears that a dual frequency microstrip antenna capable of transmitting and receiving simultaneously is highly desirable as an array feed element. This paper describes some early efforts on the development and experimental testing of a dual frequency annular microstrip antenna. The antenna has potential application for use in conjunction with a monolithic microwave integrated circuit device as an active radiating element in a phased array of phased array feeds. The antenna is designed to resonate at TM sub 12 and TM sub 13 modes and tuned with a circumferential microstrip ring to vary the frequency ratio. Radiation characteristics at both the high and low frequencies are examined. Experimental results including radiating patterns and swept frequency measurements are presented.

Application of adaptive antenna techniques to future commercial satellite communication

The purpose of this contract was to identify the application of adaptive antenna technique in future operational commercial satellite communication systems and to quantify potential benefits. The contract consisted of two major subtasks. Task 1, Assessment of Future Commercial Satellite System Requirements, was generally referred to as the Adaptive section. Task 2 dealt with Pointing Error Compensation Study for a Multiple Scanning/Fixed Spot Beam Reflector Antenna System and was referred to as the reconfigurable system. Each of these tasks was further sub-divided into smaller subtasks. It should also be noted that the reconfigurable system is usually defined as an open-loop system while the adaptive system is a closed-loop system. The differences between the open- and closed-loop systems were defined. Both the adaptive and reconfigurable systems were explained and the potential applications of such systems were presented in the context of commercial communication satellite systems.

Solar power absorption in a glass tube

The optics of a glass tube to be used in near-Earth space at the focus of a solar concentrator has been examined, and an equation for the power absorbed from multiple-reflected light beams in the tube wall has been developed. The equation has been used to calculate the power absorbed by a highly transmissive form of fused silica. The equilibrium temperature reached by the tube with only radiative cooling has also been examined, and it shows a significant rise with large solar concentrations. The results apply specifically to cylindrical containment vessels for space-based solar-pumped lasers and generally to any similarly irradiated tubes.

Rearrangement procedures in regenerative multibeammobile communications satellites with frequency reuse

After a short overview on the European tendencies about a Land Mobile Satellite Service, this paper describes an advanced system architecture, based on multiple spot-beams and on-board processing, capable of providing message and voice services over a wide European coverage, including some North-Africa and Middle-East countries. A remarkable problem associated with spot-beam configurations is the requirement for flexibility in the capacity offer to the various coverage areas. This means incorporating procedures for changing the on-board modulator-to-spot associations, respecting the constraints imposed by frequency reuse. After discussing the requirements of the rearrangement procedure, an on-purpose algorithm is presented. This paper is derived from work performed on contract to the European Space Agency (ESA).

Baseline antenna design for space exploration initiative

A key element of the future NASA Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) mission is the lunar and Mars telecommunication system. This system will provide voice, image, and data transmission to monitor unmanned missions to conduct experiments, and to provide radiometric data for navigation. In the later half of 1991, a study was conducted on antennas for the Mars Exploration Communication. Six antenna configurations were examined: three reflector and three phased array. The conclusion was that due to wide-angle scan requirement, and multiple simultaneous tracking beams, phased arrays are more suitable. For most part, this report studies phased array antenna designs for two different applications for Space Exploration Initiative. It also studies one design for a tri-reflector type antenna. These antennas will be based on a Mars orbiting satellite.

Special Effects: Antenna Wetting, Short Distance Diversity and Depolarization

The Advanced Communication Technology Satellite (ACTS) communications system operates in the Ka frequency band. ACTS uses multiple, hopping, narrow beams and very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology to establish a system availability of 99.5% for bit-error-rates of 5 x 10(exp -7) Or better over the continental United States. In order maintain this minimum system availability in all US rain zones, ACTS uses an adaptive rain fade compensation protocol to reduce the impact of signal attenuation resulting from propagation effects. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of system and sub-system characterizations considering the statistical effects of system variances due to antenna wetting and depolarization effects. In addition the availability enhancements using short distance diversity in a sub-tropical rain zone are investigated.

Seven Years of ACTS Technology Verification Experiments Reviewed

The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) was designed to achieve a 99.5-percent system availability rate and signals with less than one error in 10(exp 7) bits throughout the continental United States. To accomplish such a high rate of system availability, ACTS uses multiple narrow hopping beams and very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology. In addition, ACTS uses an adaptive rain fade compensation protocol to reduce the negative effects of propagation on the system. To enhance knowledge on how propagation and system variances affect system availability, researchers at the NASA Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field performed technology verification experiments over a 7-yr period (from September 1993 to the present). These experiments include T1VSAT System Availability, Statistical Rain Fade Compensation Characterization, Statistical Characterization of Ka-Band Propagation Effects on Communication Link Performance, and Multibeam Antenna Performance.

Video sensor with range measurement capability

A video sensor device is provided which incorporates a rangefinder function. The device includes a single video camera and a fixed laser spaced a predetermined distance from the camera for, when activated, producing a laser beam. A diffractive optic element divides the beam so that multiple light spots are produced on a target object. A processor calculates the range to the object based on the known spacing and angles determined from the light spots on the video images produced by the camera.
